Installing Mac OS 9 Classis on PowerBook G4 running 10.4.6

Hey everyone,
I just tried to install Mac OS 9 so that I could use classic but it tried to open classic to install it. The PowerBook is the most recent before the MacBook Pros came out (bought it a month before they came out >_<). Anyway, I tried starting up from the disc and that didn't work. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but how can I get this to work?

  • Problem installing Mac OS X Update on PowerBook G4

I'm trying to install the Mac OS X Update Combined 10.5.5 on my PowerBook G4 but it can't open the installer package. It keeps saying the Bill of Materials was not found. Are there any answers to this please?
    Thanks,
    Colin

The System Requirements on the update page I already mentioned
    (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1055comboupdate.html) clearly state that
*Mac OS X 10.5.1 - Mac OS X 10.5.4* is required for this update.
Is it not obvious that 10.3.9 does not meet this requirement?
You must buy Leopard (an OS upgrade ) before you can update it.

  • Can't install mac OSX 10.3 on powerbook g4 M9421LLA

I have a powerbook g4 M9421LL/A (April, 2004)  which came with leopard os x 10.5  on it, The hd went bad and I replaced the hd with a new one and tried to install the retail version of  Panther  OSx 10.3, the one it was supposed to have had on it originally. I get the prohibited sign (circle with line) when I try to boot from the install disk and can't get into disk utility, verbose or single user  mode. When I press the option key the install disk is the only choice, and I get the apple logo and then the prohibited sign when I choose it to boot from. Can anyone tell me what's wrong? When the install disk is not inserted and I boot I get the face and question mark. I can access Open Firmware only. I have tried resetting PMU with no result.

Yes, you can. Use a retail DVD.

  • I can't install mac os 9 on my ibook g4 running 10.4.2

    Can anyone help?
    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi, jagehalperin -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
No iBook G4 can boot to OS 9, however OS 9 can be used as Classic under OSX. Since that model can not boot to OS 9, no stand-alone OS 9 Install CD is usable (the installers on those will run only when the machine is booted to OS 9).
The solution is to install Classic from the original set of disks that came with the machine. One or more of these Apple KBase articles may help in doing that, depending which model iBook G4 you have and what version of OSX originally came with it -

  • Installing Mac OS X Leopard DVD on emac running 10.3.9

Hi I have purchased a Mac OS X Leopard DVD from the Apple store but every time I insert into my mac it pops back out? I have checked whether or not it is a DVD issue and it is not as all other DVD's (except for the Leopard, I've tried work!
It is the second DVD sent to me as same issue happened with first DVD - has anyone else had this problem?
I am approx 300 k from my nearest apple store - so if someone has any ideas it would be fantastic
    thanks Penny

    Hello Penny
The Leopard Installer DVD is Dual-Layered. For lack of any further information it's possible the original installed Optical Drive on your eMac can't read from Dual-Layered DVDs? Yours may be the Combo Drive instead? Although your model meets the minimum RAM requirements you would benefit greatly if you upgraded to at least 1GB - preferably more. Do you have another Mac or access to someone who has?

  • Install Mac OS X Lion.app

I just installed Lion on my Daughters new MBP 15" (Purchased June23/11). So this was a free upgrade, my question is why can't I find the "Install Mac OS X Lion.app" in Applications, or anywhere else on the harddrive. ?

    Hi Gnarly:
Unfortunately, you won't.  Once Lion is installed it deletes the installer app.
The solution is to make a copy of the "install Mac OS X Lion", first BEFORE you run it, and save it some where safe, I recommend burning a copy to DVD.
You may be able to re-download it for free.

If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:

    MB576Z/A  Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD

Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

And how can I install Mac os (is my cd broke).

  • Can I install Mac OS X 10.5 on a Powerbook G4 already running Mac OS X 10.6? I lost my disc of 10.6 and can only find my 10.5 disc as I'm selling my MacBook and wiping the hard drive for a complete reset.

A PowerBook G4 can't run Snow Leopard OS 10.6, however, it can run Leopard OS 10.5. But you must use a retail (black) Leopard install DVD.
What does the selling of your MacBook have to do with installing Leopard on your PowerBook?

  • Can't Install Mac OS 10.4 in Apple PowerBook G4 Titanium

    Hello!
I have an Apple PowerBook G4 Titanium (400Mhz). My system crash when I tried to enter and hang up in the Apple logo. I used Diskwarrior and TechTool Pro to identify the problem, but there;s no error. I inserted the 10.4 installer and format the had disk. When I tried to install Mac OS 10.4, I receive the following error:
"Essentials Installation. An error ocurred, try again"
This appears a few seconds and the screen goes blue forever. I checked the surface hard disk with TechTool Pro again and the HD seems to be OK.
Anyone can help me to know why when I tried to install 10.4, the installation hang up in the Essentials part?.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello and Thanks for answer:
Yes, I have the Retail Tiger Installer disk. The problem is WHEN the installation is taking part. When a installer disk don't work with the computer, the message "This software can't be installed in this computer" and the SHUTDOWN or RESTART button appears.
In this case, all work OK until the part INSTALLING ESSENCIALS when the screen goes blue. Now, I install Mac OS 10.3 and all the installation go OK. Upgrade via Software Update to 10.3.9 and update again via Installer CD 10.4 and all works OK. Now i'm upgrading to 10.4.11 using again Software Update. The problem is WHEN i try to install from the Apple Mac OS 10.4 Retail direct to the PowerBook G4. I tried zap the PRAM and the problem persist. NOTE: When I purchase the 10.4 DVD I make an security copy. I use the security copy and the error show up....then I use the original DVD suspicious an damage in the backup disk, but the original make the same error.

  • Problem installing Mac 10.4 on Powerbook G4 running Mac Os 10.4.3

    Greetings everyone!
I'm having hard time. I have Powerbook G4 1.67GHZ/512MB/15 inch display now running Mac OS 10.4.3. Well, I'm trying to reinstall Mac OS 10.4 by doing clean installation - that is by wiping out all the old files. Eachtime I put Mac OS 10.4 DVD and click on "Install Mac OS X" icon, a Mac OS message "click" on "Restart" button pops up. After clicking "Restart" button, normally the computer restarts, the gray screen appears with that little wheel, it then goes to the blue screen and thats all I see. Just blue screen. Nothing happens. Then I shut down the computer and restart it again while Ejecting the Mac OS 10.4 DVD out of the Computer, and then it starts without any problem and comes back to its original state.
Can you please help me. Thanks.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I don't think the DVD is damaged since it worked fine on my old G4 desktop.
The reason I'm trying to reinstall OS 10.4 is because I have received the computer from a family member with all his files and data in it. I want to get rid of it all and start from scratch for my personal use - if possible. If not, I could settle for less.
I want to explain few issues if that helps. I first tried installing Mac OS 10.3 to my Powerbook running Mac OS 10.4.3. I put OS 10.3 CD, started computer with C key held down, and all that came up was gray screen with 1 inch black line to the left of the Apple logo, and remained there - never making it to the blue screen. I shut of the computer, took the Mac OS 10.3 out of the Powerbook, restarted without the CD, and the computer was back to the desktop.
Then I tried installing 10.4, which goes past the gray screen, and gets stuck in the blue screen. I ejected the 10.4 DVD, and computer was back to normal (to the desktop)
It sounds like you inserted the wrong or a damaged DVD and neither the installation nor erasure took place. In that case, let's get started again on the right foot.
Tell me why you want to erase your hard drive? Were you experiencing some technical issue, and if so what? Let's troubleshoot that situation with the least harmful method.

  • No destination disk seen when trying to re-install mac os on powerbook g4

I wiped my drive clean and want to re-install mac os. When it gets to the screen with "select destination" there is no drive displayed. Please help!

Again, you haven't said which model powerbook you have, so I don't know what version disc(s) you have. DU is on the installer OS X disc. Boot from your OSX installer disc by holding the C key down while powering up and inserting the disc. Once it has booted you'll have to go through a few steps to reach DU. I don't recall exactly what they are but you're looking for utilities. The link I gave you should walk you through from that point, though there are some options you might want to choose (like installing OS9 drivers) depending upon your model powerbook.

  • How do I Install Mac OS 10.4 "Tiger" via Firewire onto my computer

Ok so...I have a Titanium 15" Powerbook Laptop who's faulty CD Drive is being replaced with a Super Drive, as soo as I get the part in the mail.
In the meantime, I have connected my Powerbook to my roommate's G5 Desktop, successfully wiped my Powerbook hard drive clean (via firewire), in preparation to install Mac OS X 10.4.7 onto my Powerbook's hard drive (again via Firewire) and a startup instillation disk. This is where I get stuck. How is this done? Can anyone help?

To install via firewire start up the G5 from the install disk, then when at the installation screen boot the powerbook in target disk mode. Choose the powerbook from the list of disks to install 10.4 onto. Then just install the system. I am not sure if it will work from a G5, but it is worth a try.

  • Mac OS 9.2.1 CD fails to boot on PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.3.9

I reformatted a friend's PowerBook G4 and installed Mac OS 10.3.9 with no problem. They have a few Classic applications they need to use, but I can't get the Mac OS 9.2.1 CD to boot so i can install it. The CD is bootable, because it says so right on the disc (white disc with orange "9"). I tried setting the startup disk to the CD drive, but that drive won't show up in the startup disk preferences. I've also tried installing from the desktop while booted into Mac OS X, but the OS 9 installer will not install. Any ideas?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.25 GHz; 512 MB RAM

Hi, Temporos. Most Powerbook G4 models aren't able to boot into OS 9.anything, regardless of the disc being used.
All Titanium PB G4s, which have two separate hinges and most of their ports on the back panel between the hinges, are bootable into some version of OS 9. Some of them require the model-specific version of OS 9.2.2 that was shipped on the discs that came with them. There is no other source for a bootable OS 9.2.2 on those models.
The many different Aluminum PB G4 models (12", 15" and 17"), which all have a single continuous hinge running all the way across the back and all their ports on the side panels, can't boot into any version of OS 9. The discs that were shipped with them include installers for Classic, i.e. a non-bootable installation of OS 9 that can be used to run OS 9-based apps in OS X.
Whether or not your Powerbook can boot to an OS 9.2.1 retail installer disc is not dependent on having OS 9 drivers installed on the hard drive. Even without those drivers installed, a Powerbook that is capable of booting to a retail 9.2.1 disc will do so, if the disc and the PB's optical drive are in working order. But if the PB can't boot to that disc, nothing you can do will change that.
Please identify your PB G4 model precisely. Then we'll know how to advise you.

  • Need a webcam for PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11 -- help!!!

Hi - i am looking for a webcam for my PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11. No Apple service center or other computer store in India has any idea of what camera could work. Logitech sells the QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac, but that is too expensive for me. The ones I liked (from Logitech) are the Webcam C200/C250M/C500/C600 and the QuickCam for Notebooks - though I don't know if any of these is compatible with my G4.
Any suggestions? I'm open to suppliers other than Logitech, as long as it does not cost more than $60.
Please help me ASAP - thanks in advance
