Installing Mac OS X on a 2nd internal Hard Drive

I just purchased a 2nd hard drive for my PowerMac G5 2.5 GHz machine. I want to install Mac OS X on the new drive and use it as the main drive. However, when I try booting from the Mac OS X (Black dvd disc) my machine won't boot. The screen crashes and I have to hold down the power button until the machine turns off. When I boot from my regular hard drive, I can insert the Mac OS X disc and it operates fine. It just doesn't boot my machine.
Any ideas????

Hello Again! If your goal is to use the new disk as the main disk and the current system boot drive is "stable" and is not experiencing any problems then you can clone the old drive to the new one using Kappy's process for making a bootable external since the steps are the same whether it's an internal or external drive. Be sure the drive has been formatted as Mac in disk utility and it's always good to use the zero data option when installing a new drive. Once you have cloned the drive boot from the new one and run it a few days to be sure it's working ok before erasing the old one or deleting all the files on it. You can also use SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to clone with instead of the disk utility. Tom
Kappy's Steps to Produce a bootable clone
Prep external FW drive:
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

2011 Mac Mini - Boot up on 2nd internal hard drive?

Hi folks,
I just picked up a Mac Mini today, after I lost all patience with my circa 2007 MacBook Pro when it stopped booting up this morning. I ordered more RAM and am planning to install the recently replaced hard drive from my MBP into my Mac Mini. I'm just wondering, will that drive just show up as another hard drive, similar to the way that external hard drives appear? And more importantly, the old hard drive has an older version of Snow Leopard installed, as well as a bunch of software, including my Adobe CS software. I've already jumped through hoops with Adobe to get my software reinstalled on my MBP a few months ago, and I don't feel like dealing with that again. So if the drive does show up as a separate device, can I just run my Adobe software from that drive? Or do I have to reboot but select that old hard drive at startup (if that's even an option) to run all software on it?

I mention "if SL will run" for a good reason. Newer Macs have the EFI (similar to BIOS in PC) set to usually run only the OSX it came with.
I would not bet anything on the SL installation being stable in the macmini, especially as the device drivers are for a MacbookPro (trackpad, keyboard, graphics chips, etc) instead of for a Macmini. Macmini has no built-in keyboard/mouse so has slightly more adaptable installed keyboard and mouse controllers than a macbookpro installation would.
I would not bet any money on anything other than Lion being stable on that macmini.

Installing windows xp pro on a separate internal hard drive in ntfs

Does anyone here know how to install windows xp professional on a separate internal hard drive in NTFS with bootcamp. In the bootcamp manual it says I can ,but when I reach the list of partitions in xp setup, C: Partition3<BOOTCAMP> {FAT32} Is not on the list. I called support and they told me Apple doesnt support BOOTCAMP on a separate drive and to check the forum though the manual says It can be done.

Rather easy enough to do. People install XP and Vista all the time on 2, 3rd or 4th drive in Mac Pro. I know Vista 64-bit on Mac Pro has best support for addressing RAM and drivers.

Macs with a FireWire port will also boot happily from an External drive. You don't even need to open the MacBook.
Some users buy a drive they would like to have as a future Internal drive, and also buy an external enclosure. They get the External set up the way they want it, then swap with the Internal drive.

Installing Windows 7 with boot camp as whole partition on 2nd internal hard drive

Hi all,
I am unsure what is the recent changes with Apple boot camp. But when I used boot camp utilitiy on my Mac Pro (Mid 2010) to install windows 7 64 bits. It would not install and created a whole lot of problems.
After I initialise the process to install windows 7 using boot camp utilities, I chose the option to create a single partition to installl windows 7 on my secondary internal hard drive (1TB). After I restarted my Mac Pro and started the Windows 7 installation process, I was unable to install Windows 7 on the BOOTCAMP partition created by the boot camp utilitiy. I got an error something about Windows cannot be installed on the selected forum because the driver contained GPT details.
I tried to format the BOOTCAMP partition, but it ended up with errors. I tried to delete and recreate the BOOTCAMP partition in Windows setup, but failed with errors again. As I could not go any further with the Windows 7 installation, I had to hard reset my Mac Pro and tried to reboot back into Mac OS X Lion and that's when the nightmare begin.
Not only I could not boot into OS X, I could not use any of the startup key combinations (i.e. Hold option key to select start up disk, option + R to boot the lion recovery drive, not boot from any external firewire drive installed with OS X Lion). Basically none of the key combinations worked except for the holdingi F12 and mouse key to eject CD.
The only thing I could boot the Mac Pro with is the windows installation CD and Linux Ubuntu Raring Distro. I can install the ubuntu distro without any issue. However, I could not boot my mac pro back into OS X as Linux does not support bootcamp. The only way I could use Mac OS X Lion again is to delete the partition OS X Lion was installed on, and then I was be able to install Windows 7 without any issue.
After installing windows 7 I would have to download boot camp and then use the boot camp control panel to restart in the Mac Pro installation DVD and I will have to reinstall OS X again. After installing OS X, I went to System Preference and tried to select Windows 7 as startup disc. But I failed to as it says "Windows 7" Was installed via another utility. I would have to erase the partition and reinstall Windows 7 again using bootcamp utility. If I try to install windows 7 again, the horror I described above repeats again.
From my understanding, the Boot camp utility creates a new EFI bootrom with Master Boot Record (MBR) in FAT32 format. Therefore I could not boot back into Mac OS X without using boot camp in windows 7 as none of the boot combinations key worked.
I want to ask if anyone is experiencing the same issue as i do, and if there are any solutions to the problem I am experiencing. I never had such issue before. I was able to install Windows 7 on my 2ndary internal hard drive without issue using boot camp. I don't what has changed. I have googled for solution, I only found something related to XOM but nothing else.
If anyone can provide me with any help in regards to installing Windows 7 as a whole partition on a secondary internal hard drive. It'd be grealy appreciated. Thank you in advance.

If you have driver issue, just pre-download the boot camp drivers and save them on an external drive or burn them onto a cd, you will be able to load drivers via the advanced installation option during windows setup, that is if your osx partition isn't actively preventing you from installing win7 on the BOOTCAMP Partition created by boot camp assistant, I find this rather ironic, took me 3 days to figure out this issue, I was stuck without being able to boot into anything beside the windows cd, which wasn't even helpful as I could not install windows as I did not want to delete my osx partition. I lost all my data becsuse of it, as I had no idea what was going on. I tried to recover the partition using testdisk, hfsprogs and gparted in ubuntu life cd but they dont support HFS+. As I could not access osx terminal (couldn't even boot into osx installation dvd with that dreaded MBR created by boot csmp). I could not use pdisk in terminal to restore the osx partition map. Though luck for me. Called applecare and they had no idea what the problem was, and as usual they orgsnised for hard drive replacement. But it was clearly a software issue.
They will have to fix bay2 for me as I can no longer detect any hard disk connected to that bay.

New Mac Pro - Best way to get Windows XP on 2nd Internal Hard Drive?

After 16 years, I'm back to a Mac. I picked up a second hard drive for my Mac Pro that I have not installed yet and would like to solely dedicate this drive to running XP Pro. What is the best way to do this please? Thanks!!!

Hi and welcome to Discussions and also welcome back
for running Windows XP you can use the BootCamp Assistant which is part of OSX Leopard (in the Applications/Utilities Folder).
Print out the Installation Guide found either inside the BC Assistant or from here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ and follow it to the letter.
While maybe not neccessary but advisable, make a backup of your OSX volume.
The BC Assistant gives you the choice to use a secondary harddisk fully for installing Windows (page 7 of the guide).
Make sure that during installation of Windows you re-format the destination with the Windows Installer (page 9+10 of the guide).
Also be aware that with XP you can only use the 32-bit version, since the 64-bit XP version is not supported.
Only with Vista you can use the 64-bit versions, when you have a 2008 or later model of the Mac Pro.
Once you have installed your XP, insert the OSX Leopard DVD while in Windows in order to install the BootCamp Drivers.
And download the appropriate BC Update 2.1 from here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/windows/
Other possibilities to run Windows on a Mac are the Virtualization apps like Parallels, VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox.

Updated to 10.4.5 and now my 2nd internal hard drive is missing...help.

I updated to 10.4.5 today with the I tunes 6.0.3. When it finished booting up my 2nd hard drive that holds all my music disappeared. I think the term is didn't mount. I am not computer savy. I have another internal hard drive that did. I used cocktail to repair permirssions and rebooted. I also, went to the apple site and downloaded 10.4.5 combo but still no luck. The hard drive does not show up in disk utilities at all. Any suggestions?

All I can tell you from the panic log is that there's a problem either with the video card and/or the video drivers. You might try the following:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Installing Mac OS X Tiger on an external hard drive

I was wondering how to install Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger on an external hard drive. I have a 40GB USB/Firewire LaCie Mobile Hard Drive.
I've tried using disk utility to convert it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but when I attempt install Mac OS Tiger from the system disc after restarting the computer, it shows the available disks that Tiger can be installed on and the ones it can't be installed on, and my external drive shows up as one that it can't be installed on for some reason.
I don't really want to clone my internal hard drive to the external one, but instead want to just be able to use my external hard drive as a mobile startup disk where I can work on files using other Mac computers when I'm away from home.
Any suggestions?

What did you do in DU? Erase? Partition? and what was it before? or just to enable journaling? What is on the LaCie now and does it have adequate space?
Do you have an upgrade Tiger disk?
And why not just clone the system using CCC and skipping /Users and other directories you want to skip?
One last thing: click on the volume and do a Get Info and make sure that Ignore Ownership is not selected.

Time Capsule vs. 2nd internal hard drive

I have the equipment below but with only one internal hard drive. Recently my system crashed trying to upgrade TechTool (now in the landfill). Pictures and music gone. Backup! What's that? Actually they warned me but have used it for years without problems.
Now to get to my question. I have Time Capsule software (Leopard) but it sounds cheaper and easier just to slip in a 2nd hard drive and use that for backup. Is that crazy or do able? The drive I have in there is a Maxtor 6Y250M0 I think it's a 250GB. I have 164GB available but still don't have half my music and pictures on it. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I also have a Linksys router but my wife uses it for work and I'd be DOA if I screwed that up.

Actually, with the right software, you can. There are plenty of data recovery programs out there: Data Rescue II, Norton Utilities, and Toast Titanium, just to name a few.
Even after wiping a drive, you may still be able to recover a lot of data using a good data recovery program.
A question I do have is, I'm seeing SATA I/II. Does that just mean single and dual processors?
No. SATA is what connects your internal drives. You can think of it like a modern version of SCSI, in a way.

Power mac g5 2nd internal hard drive

I just installed a second hard drive into my power mac g5. It is a SATA drive installation was easy but now the computer isn't recognizing the drive. I've tried to initialize it but i am now a bit stuck. The drive shows up when i open disk utility but i'm not even sure where to go from there. There is a Mac OS X server update combined but i cannot select a destination for the installation and now i'm pretty much just stuck, any ideas?

To format a drive, open Disk Utility, highlight the drive in the left-hand list, go to the Erase tab, choose a format (generally, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is recommended), enter a name for the drive, and click Erase.
I'm not sure how the update is connected - you say you're running OS X Server?

Power Mac G4 will not Recognize any Internal Hard Drives

My G4 was working fine and I wanted to install a driver for a 'Twin Turbo Mac Video Card' I had in a PCI slot but it required OS9 running. At the time, I had two internal drives 230 and 120 G running 10.4.11 but no OS9. However, I did have an external Firewire Drive with OS9 and OSX. I set my "Startup Disk" preference to boot from FW drive and selected OS9 then shut down my G4. When I powered back on I got the standard "gong" but on my display I saw a "Mac Folder and a Question Mark". I believe that means the system can't find a drive. Is that correct? I reverted back to my original configuration with the internal drives and the FW drive disconnected and I still see the "Folder and Question Mark". I inserted the Tiger DVD, held down the "C" key and it still will not boot from the DVD either. I once again tried connecting a FireWire External drive with OS 10.4.11 installed and the internal drives disconnected and still no bootup. I swapped out Memory, replaced the Motherboard and the battery and even tried resetting the PRAM. Still that stupid Question Mark is showing!! This has really got me puzzled. Any ideas or suggestions out there?

Depressing/holding the Option key at startup activates the Startup Manager (not open firmware). The resulting window shows all of the available startup volumes (hard drives, CD, DVD, etc).

Installing Mac OS X on an external firewire hard drive.

No matter what I try, I cannot get my Mac mini to boot from the SuperDrive, in order to install the Mac OS X operating system onto my external firewire hard drive...
The Mac mini always recognises the external firewire HD, each time the system boots-up which is good, however it also boots-up from the internal HD, automatically.
Any suggestions ?
I have also noticed that my external firewire HD does not appear as an option as a Startup Disk, under System Preferences...

I have used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the Mini's internal HD to the firewire external HD, and now it appers as a Startup Drive under System Preferences...
I have also noticed that I must first turn-on the ext. firewire HD and then after a few seconds turn-on the Mini.
And, yes, I was using the original DVD-ROM System Install Disk that came with the Mini, when I was trying to install Mac OS X onto the ext. firewire HD...
Now, I still cannot get my Mac Mini to boot from the ext. firewire HD, even with a clone copy of the internal HD. I keep selecting it as my Startup Disk under System Preferences and even lock-it, but this does not seem to work.
Now, I use the 'Alt' key (for Windows PC keyboards) which is the 'Option' key for Mac keyboards, when the Mini is booting up. This gives me a choice as to which HD I want to boot from... However, I cannot seem to change this from the default internal HD. It gives me a large arrow to use, in order to change the HD, but I cannot seem to use this large arrow from the keyboard. And the mouse just stays in the top left-hand corner of the screen. I know, if the mouse curser were free, I would be able to change the large arrow and boot from the ext. firewire HD...
Any suggestions ?

a year ago (whenever the newest Mac OS came out), i upgraded the OS.
in the middle of installing the OS, i got error messages, and i had to restart the installation a couple times before i finally got through.
when i tried to install OS X on my new hard drive, the same error message came up.
anyone know whats wrong with my computer?

does the hard drive have to be bigger
i think it might be that it is not the original software restoration disk that cam with the ibook.
if that is the case is there any way around it

More than likely that disc is not compatible with that Mac. You need a retail version of Tiger or that iBook's original restore discs.

Wallstreet: Can't install Mac OS X 10.2 because of Hard Drive

When I go to install Mac OS X, it says that the computer cannot start-up from this disk. With Mac OS 9 it would. I don't have any other Mac OS CD-ROMs, and I reformated the Hard Drive to see if that would fix it. no luck. I need this fixed!

lying wholly in the first 8GB of the drive.
My PowerBook only have a 4Gb Hard Drive. In the installer it shows an hdd and a red octagon with a "!" in it.
