Installing Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard on an eMac problems

I'm trying to install Mac OS X 10.5 on an eMac. When I first bought the Mac Box Set, it said the Leopard disc was damaged so I called up Apple and got a replacement. Now when I try to install it says:
"The Installer could not validate the contents of the 'BaseSystem' package."
BTW, I'm installing on a 500 GB Western Digital External FireWire HD, as my internal hard drive died. How can I get the installation to work?

After much investigating and asking around, turned out my eMac's SuperDrive was not recent enough to read dual-layer discs. It's just that simple.
FWIW, essentially every DVD drive including those in every Mac can read dual layer disks. Almost all commercial DVD movie releases are DL, so a drive that could not read them would be nearly useless. Your eMac's DVD drive cannot write ("burn") DL disks, which is an entirely different capability.

The answer is simple: It is illegal. There is no discussion beyond that.

It's to do with licensing. If you read the EULA that comes with OSX it tells you about those restrictions.

You cannot download Leopard. You must purchase it on eBay, Amazon.com, or do a Google search.
Alternatively, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard - $29.00 USD - that can be purchased from any Apple retailer.

  • How do i install mac os x v10.6 so I can update itunes for my iphone 5

So I have an older white macbook.  I am using mac os x v10.5.8.  I need to update my os version to 10.6 so I can install the newer version of itunes in order to plug my iphone 5 into itunes.  I can't seem to find the 10.6 download.  Please help.

To sync an iPhone 5 you need iTunes 10.7 or later.
To use iTunes 10.7 or later on a Mac, you must be running OS X 10.6.8 or later.
To upgrade from OS X 10.5.8, you must first buy Snow Leopard on DVD.
Snow Leopard is not available to download from any legitimate source.
    Online (US): http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Online (UK): http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Elsewhere: call the phone number in the Apple Online Store
    Apple's price is $19.99 or £14.00.
Make sure your system meets Snow Leopard's requirements:
Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" System Requirements
To install Snow Leopard for the first time, you must have a Mac with:
    An Intel processor
An internal or external DVD drive, or DVD or CD Sharing
At least 1 GB of memory (RAM) (additional RAM is recommended)
A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
At least 5 GB of disk space available, or 7 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools
After you install Snow Leopard you can decide if you want to upgrade OS X to the latest version, Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is available in the Mac App Store, which is available to you after upgrading to Snow Leopard.

  • Installing Mac OS X v10.7 not possible.

    Hello.
First off, I've a MacBook Pro 15", Intel Core Duo 2, 4GB Ram using the latest version of Snow Leopard.
So, I downloaded Mac OS X v10.7 from the App Store and run the .dmg file. Everything worked fine and my MacBook restarted and showed the Mac OS X Installer.
    I chose the "HD" Volume.
    It started installing.
It was written something like "36 Minutes remain".
After ten minutes: "35 Minutes remain"
And then something appeared that said it's not possible to install Mac OS X Lion because the volume was broken and could not have been repaired.
So I clicked the Restart button. Once again I tried to install it: Same story…
    What should I do now?
Is there a way to restart my MacBook without booting on Mac OS X Lion?

I'm sorry to say that it failed :-(  (and I must admit that I would have been surprised if it had worked)
The verify disk permissions run on the Mac found numerous minor errors, but never stopped reporting on some of them. Tried to run it multiple times. Chkdsk /f never reported anything bad at all. That also run multiple times.
After restart (and install to begin):
    From the process window
    33 minutes left
    32 minutes left
    30 minutes left (and "crash"...)
In the end: It all stops on "Cannot create Recovery partition"
Jul 21 16:22:59 localhost OSInstaller[344]: Recovery system creation failed with error -69728 (This partition map modification would make a Windows partition unbootable)
Jul 21 16:23:00 localhost OSInstaller[344]: Reverted bless to disk Macintosh HD
And a warning to you all: If you have Magic Mouse, you will not manage to press the "Restart button" or save the install log. Luckily I found myself a direct USB connected mouse.
teruhiko: No references to boot.ini at all in the install.log, so I doubt we have the same problem. But thanks for your attempt!
    Best regards,
    SverreO

  • Can I buy Mac OS x v10.5 leopard or do I already have that since I have Mac OS 10.5.8?  However I can't buy or download anything higher?

Hi:)  Is it possible for me to buy the Mac OS X version 10.5 Leapord or would that not due me any good  since I already have

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

  • Installation of MAC OS X v10.5 Leopard

    Hi,
I just bought this iBookG4 with OS v10.4 Tiger. May I know if it is possible to upgrade to OS v10.5 Leopard? I have a Macbook Pro with OS Leopard, so could I use the same disc to install the OS Leopard onto my iBookG4?
    Thanks for advising.

You may not use the Leopard disc that came with your MB Pro, for several reasons. One, it is a violation of the Apple license, which allows an OS to be installed on one computer at a time. Two, the disc that came with your MB Pro is specific to that disc, and will not have the necessary drivers to run the G4--so even if you decided it was worth violating your license, you wouldn't have any luck trying.
It is possible to run Leopard on many G4s if they meet the system requirements:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacOS_X_Leopard#Systemrequirements
In the US it is still possible to purchase Leopard through Apple phone sales; I don't know about Singapore. Good luck!
