Installing Mavericks As A Bootable External Harddrive Please Help!
Hi sorry to bother you, I'm having difficulty installing Mavericks as a bootable external harddrive. I've downloaded Mavericks off the App Store (which taken 4 hours) and have tried using the createinstallmedia method but I'm having no joy
I've been following a Youtube tutorial and everytime I run the below command through terminal when I get to the part where its "Making disk bootable…" I get this message - Couldn't mount dmg /volumes/install os x mavericks/install os x mavericks.app/contents/sharedsupport/installesd.dmg (error code 5)mount of outer dmg failed.
I have no idea what this means I'v tried googling it and there isn't much on the subject apart from one forum where one guy had to re download Mavericks again which I've done already and still get the same error message. If anyone knows where I am going wrong it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks "clintonfrombirmingham" for the quick reply! Yea I think I am going to have to use either the Disk Utility method or like what you suggested the DiskMaker option. I was just interested in the reason as to why it wasn't working for me using the bootable USB installation disk method.

I am shooting a documentary in the USA and need to buy an ext harddrive to use with my Macbook Air. I need a solution and I am confused by the options. I know I do not have firewire but I do have USB2.0. Is that just as good? What about Thunderbolt?
I would also like it to be powered by the laptop so I can avert any problems with powering it in Germany, where I live.
I will need it for 10 hours of uncompressed HD footage.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Kindly!For storing raw footage and viewing it I agree with captfred that USB will be more than sufficient. When it comes time to edit you'd notice the difference between USB and other options. I don't work with video in huge quantities the way you do/will but I prefer working with FW800 or having the video on an internal drive when I edit. But I do disagree with the recommendation of WD because the company uses a proprietary chipset and has very poor customer support. I prefer OWC drives and I've been pleased with the two iomega portable drives I've bought.

I have Elements 13 (I have the hard copy) installed on my iMac using Yosemite. I do all my iPhoto work on an external drive where I have copied my iPhoto Library, can I also install Elements 13 on my external harddrive or drag Elements 13 over from my iMac so that I can do work with Elements 13 via the exteranl hard drive? Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:

Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?

There is a problem with the activation process between your machine and Apple to verify your machine is allowed to reinstall OS X.
You will have to call AppleCare to resolve this issue. (even if you did't purchase AppleCare you still call their number)

Thanks for the update. I don't know if you have tried this, but I would next I would try removing and re adding the mail account from the phone, then testing the issue again:
Delete the affected email account from your device.
Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Choose the affected email account, then tap Delete Account.
Add your account again.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!Hook your iPad into your computer and open iTunes. GIve it a couple of minutes to get going, then click on the name of your device, then the main summary page. In the middle you'll see a software update button/area. Click on check on updates and update and follow the prompts.
it SHOULDN"T redownload but if you've already got it should just install.
I'd suggest that you first do a complete sync before you update, that way you have a good backup to restore your device from if the upgrade doesn't go perfect. -

Apple (and no one else) can not assist (with serial number or iCloud) in finding a lost or stolen iPad.
Report to police along with serial number. Change all your passwords.

Maverick does not see External Harddrive
I had a Seagate external usb3 harddrive connected. I was working on a video file when suddenly I got a message in the upper right hand corner saying that the external harddrive was incorrectly disconnected or dismounted. OK. So, I unplug and then plug the ext. HD back into the usb3 port. To make the story short, the hd light comes on, I can hear the disk spinning. But it does not appear in the Finder or desktop. The only sign on the Mac is by going to the "About This Mac" and to the System Report which lists hardware and software. Clicking on the USB line, it shows the external HD plugged into one of the usb 3 ports. The disk info indicates its ID and other data and how much energy it is consuming (it appears it is only using 96 mA from an available 500 mA). So, it appears that the Mac sees it and can read it and has power enough to run it.
I then removed the first ext. HD and inserted another Seagate external usb3 harddrive - the Mac doesn't see it either except in the System report. The external HDs do not show up in the Disk Utility app. The only conclusion is that the harddrives are probably OK but the Mac won't mount them anymore. Most people with unmountable ext. HDs usually see them in the disk utility (greyed out).
Any ideas.Update - I have three Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex external harddrives. The two that I have connected to my Macbook Pro no longer can be read. I took the two and connected to another MacBook Pro but it would not read the drivers either. I took my third drive which I have not connected to my Macbook Pro for several weeks and connected to the other Macbook Pro and it reads it fine.
I downloaded drivers from Seagate but it didn't help. I started my computer in safe mode, HD didn't work. I have another drive containing a duplicate of my internal HD (using Superduper) and booted with the backup drive. It would not open the two drives. I'm taking the HD to a friend who has a G5 using an early Mac OS, 6.0. These two drives contain my video files and I need to retrieve the files.
Conclusion: The Maverick on my computer has corrupted the first two Seagate drives.
