Installing Mavericks from Leopard

I have an iMac (Intel) 2012 that came with Leopard already installed. I would like to format and and install Mavericks. I have the original Leopard DVD and I ask: is it possible to install Mavericks from Leopard? How do I do that?

Check which OS you have installed. I would think a 2012 Mac would have shipped with Snow Leopard (10.6).
If you really have Leopard (10.5) you'll need to purchase the Snow Leopard DVD from the Apple Retail Store:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
If you have Snow Leopard, use Software Update to bring it up to 10.6.8, then open the App Store from the Apple Menu. From there, "purchase" Mavericks (it's free).
Backing up a little, if you do have Leopard installed that came with your iMac, please go to About this Mac in the Apple Menu, then click More Info...
Under the Hardware section, note what the model identifier is and post it here.
Also, you should look at what software you have installed that may not work with Mavericks.

  • Problem installing Mavericks from my recovery partition of my computer

I don't know what's going on but for some reason each and every time I try to install mavericks from my recovery partition I get an error saying "OSX Mavericks failed to download" , then the text underneath that said "Use the purchases page to try again". This creates a problem for me because I can not access the Mac AppStore since I whipped my MacBook clean with the os along with it and am trying to clean install mavericks. So I was wondering how do I fix this because I am beginning to get extremely ****** off and frustrated.

  • Can't install Mavericks from OSX 10.7.5

I've had many attempts at trying to install Mavericks from OSX 10.7.5 but when the download is complete & I try to do the install I get a message saying that the download could not be verified or was corrupted...

First, check to see if your computer can run Mavericks.
    Here's the list.

  • How do I install Mavericks from the App Store if I erased my HD?

My mbp has been acting funny and slow, and I think I may have had some corrupted files. I have my computer backed up to time machine, and additionally I saved all my important files, photos etc to the external HD before I began. Then I erased my HD. Everything I read indicated that since I had installed mavericks previously (and legitimately), I would be able to do so again from disk utility after I finished erasing the HD so long as I had a working Internet connection. Well, I do, but now when I click "Reinstall OS X" I get a screen with Mavericks and then an error message saying, "this is not a supported method of installing the operating system/ please run Install OS X Mavericks.app that you downloaded from the app store." But I erased my hard drive! I really don't want to use my time machine backup because I'm worried some of my files are corrupted, and wouldn't that just put me back in the exact same position?
For the record, it's a late 2010 MBP that originally had Snow Leopard. My boyfriend upgraded it to Mavericks for me a few weeks ago.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
You  can then re-download Mavericks from the App Store.

  • How to install mavericks from scratch

    Hi
I have just upgraded my imac with an OWC Mercury 120 Gb SSD and increased ram up to 12 Gb.
The upgrade was made by a service where I sent the mac with OSX Maverics and a few apps previously installed. Everything runs fine (no more tha 3 secs to start PS Elements) and I started to reinstall apps from my time machine hd, but later noticed that the Applications folder exists both in the SSD and Macintosh HD wich makes me think that osx resides in Macintosh HD. Now, as my iMac is middle 201, it seems I have to start the install from DVD Snow Leopard and not Maverics directly. Before the upgrade I tried as an exercise to install Maverics from an USB stick as suggested in a forum, but when the progress timer said 1 second left, no further progress and had to reinstall SL, then Lion and later Mavericks, quite a long procedure if there is not a shorter way.
    Thanks

You would have to install Snow Leopard (10.6) first. You can get SL for $20 from the Apple Store here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard..
Then Mavericks (or Yosemite, which is supposed to come out in a few days) would be a free download from the App Store.

I have just recently changed jobs and want to wipe my 2009 MacBook Pro 17' clean and install a Solid State Drive.
I don't have any of the old OS Install DVDs and would like to install Mavericks or Yosemite from Scratch.
How do I buy/obtain a copy of this that I can install on the new Solid State Drive?

  • Install Mavericks from Internet Recovery

Hi there hope somebody can help me,
I am trying to install OS X Mavericks on my MacBook Pro 2010 model using the internet recovery as i have no OS installed and no Recovery partition.
When i try to install Mavericks im asked to login with my apple ID, however i have not activated Mavericks on my account so cannot proceed.
I dont have access to any other mac to activate the download on my account and my nearest apple store is over a 1 hour drive.
Please can someone with a Mac create a new apple ID for me and activate Mavericks on it using the mac app store so that i can proceed?
    Thanks
    Jacob

That is completely false information. The OP has a 2010 Mac notebook that came with Snow Leopard. Even if he can access the Online Internet Recovery system from that 2010 model (Some can and Some Can NOT) he still would not be able to install any of the Downloaed Only version of OS X (Lion, Mt Lion or Mavericks)
He needs the Original System Reinstall DVD disc Set that came with his system or a Replacement set of them.
    Dr.Mac. wrote:
Your computer can use Internet recovery to install the factory's initial OS X which is Lion 10.7
To use the OS X Internet Recovery feature after applying a firmware update. Download and install an updated EFI Firmware ROM for these computers to use the OS X Internet Recovery feature: MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.6 Download
This update enables Lion Recovery from an Internet connection on MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) models. After you install Lion you can  download the new OS X Mavericks. There is free upgrade option in the Mac App store.

  • Re-install mavericks from yosemeti

Is there a way I can re-install mavericks after having already installed Yosemite? I have an 8GB Ram macbook pro

    Do a backup, preferably 2.
Revert to a Previous OS X
    Revert Yosemite to Mavericks
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

  • How to upgrade to mavericks from leopard?

I've already purchased the necessary upgrades for my other macs with multiple licensing so thats not the issue.
Recently I needed to use a third macbook for work but didn't want to drag along my best MBPro into such harsh conditions, so I decided to take my old macbook out of retirement, but because I don't have an app store on it I'm surprized how difficult it is to do something that should've been so simple.

There have been lots of different MacBooks. If yours is an older PPC (G4 orG5) Mac you cannot upgrade any further. If it is an Intel Mac:
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion

  • Installing Drivers from Leopard disk

I installed windows and got myself through to the os seemingly ok. I popped in the leopard disk to install the drivers. From here it goes through the autorun process alright and then restarts on its own like it should. When windows loads back up I get one of those generic error reports, and no further drivers install off the "found new hardware" wizard as its described in the boot camp installation guide. Im assuming the drivers havent successfully installed because the os is not recognizing a wireless internet connection and the apple keys (volume, eject, etc.) are not working in windows.
If anyone could help me out that would be fantastic, thanks.

Any luck with this? Seems like I'm having the same issue.

  • Can I re-install mavericks from start up recovery mode onto usb or external hard drive?

so my hard drive hit the dust and had to buy a replacement hard drive. Unfortunately I am out of town and have no access to my original OSx disc. also, since my macbook pro is 09' I dont have an internet recovery option.
My old hard drive will boot up in recovery mode but it says that the hard drive is damaged and unrepairable. however when I boot up in recovery mode, it gives me the option to reinstall mavericks. I have a USB plugged in and when I click on the reinstall option, it asks me to select the disc where I want to install OSx. The usb also pops up but when I select it, it says
"This disk doesnt use the GUID partition table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. Select the disk, choose the partition tab, select the volume scheme and then click options"
now I am no tech wiz, I can do some basic stuff but I just want to see if its possible to do get the installer onto the USB from here. is there anyway to get the installer on the USB?

i forgot to add, (and just incase it wasnt obvious) i want to get it on a usb so i can download it to the new harddrive

  • IMac gifted - cannot install Mavericks from Internet

We received an iMac (Model Nr: A1224) from family. it boots to a "OSX Dienstprogramme" (Time Machine restore, Mavericks new install, Disk Utilities).
We've tried several times to install from the APP Store, but after logging in (with **our** Apple ID) the message is that Mavericks is not available for the moment.
Does the iMac need to be "un-registered" from the previous owner (and their Apple ID) ?
Is Mavericks no longer available for installation ?
    thanks in advance

We had to buy Mavericks (OS 10.9). Therefore it may be listed in the App store under Purchases. To get to that page you will need the ID and password of the original buyer.
Since the computer is now yours, you should unregister from the previous owner and register it in your name and ID. That will give you access to the App store as yourself. Once there you can get Yosemite (OS 10.10.2). It is free.

  • Install mavericks from external

    Hi huys
can I download maverics to external HD then use this disk to install it in my laptop just like lion, mountain lion

The download won't give you a choice about where it goes -- it will always go into the Applications folder. But you can move it out of that location if you want, or copy it to another drive, before running it.
I experimented with several ways of running the installer, including running it from external bootable drives much like the DiskMaker X creates & one created using the method Apple mentions in this K-base article. These methods work but I do not recommend them unless you need to do a "clean install" after erasing the startup drive.
The reason is they are very s-l-o-w compared to simply running the installer from the startup disk of the Mac you want to upgrade. I tried using a regular USB 2.0 hard drive instead of a much slower flash drive for the bootable installer but it didn't make much difference -- not only does it take a lot longer to boot from a USB 2.0 connected drive than from the internal one, checking the target drive, copying installer files to it, & every other step of the install process takes much longer to complete.
So what I recommend is simply to copy the Mavericks installer to some other drive for safekeeping after you download it so you will always have a copy if you need to use it again. If you do, just copy it back to the normal startup disk of the Mac you want to upgrade, & run it from there.
If you need to do a clean install later you can always make a bootable thumb drive using the DiskMaker or Apple method (or add a partition on the external HD for that), but there rarely is a compelling reason to do that.

  • Can't install Tiger from Leopard

    Hi everybody,
I'm running Leopard on my flat panel iMac but I'd like to move down to Tiger.
The iMac recognizes the install disc but nothing happens when I double-click the installer (the iMac just boots to Leopard).
I've also tried holding down the "c" key as I restart but I get a question mark.
Finally, I tried setting startup disc to the Tiger install CD but it just boots to Leopard.
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Mike

That is unfortunate, with the G4 Cube.
Did you try the Option key at startup, to get Startup Manager?
If you can't get it startup from that retail Tiger DVD, you could try to do an installation onto the that iMac G4's hard drive, using another supported PowerPC Mac to run the installation. I see you have an iMac G5 in your profile. It needs to be a PowerPC Mac, because there are separate PowerPC and Intel builds for Tiger. This method involves using FireWire Target Disk Mode.

If you have that other Mac and want more details, please post back.
