Installing .mkpg and .pkg files

I have downloaded .mkpg files as well as .pkg files recently, but when I try to open them I get a message that I don't have an application to open it. I have never had a problem with this before. Now, instead of the icon I always saw before, these are showing up with the appearance of general folders. Any ideas?

  • My Mac won't install mpkg and pkg files.

    My Mac won't install mpkg and pkg files.  Whenever I double-click an pkg or mpkg file, I get the dialog box to "choose an application" to open it.   After some searching, I discovered I do not have the installer.app.  I tried to Repair Disk from my Snow Leopard DVD but every time it boots from the DVD, my computer crashes.  Any suggestions?

    You have the installer app.  It is located in /System/Library/CoreServices.
    Use the finder's Go menu, Go to Folder... and type /System/Library/CoreServices to open the CoreServices folder.   You should see it in there. If you do not see it there then that would beg the question what else might be missing and perphas you need to do an update (re)install (or restore form a hopefully good backup).
    To try to reassoicatate .[m]pkl's with the Installer, take one of your .[m]pkg's and do a finder Get Info on it and set the Open with... to the Installer app.  If the Installer app is not shown use Other... at the bottom of the list to navigate to the CoreServices folder and select Installer.  Then click the Change All... button.
    I am not sure why your [.m]pkgs would have lost their Launch Services association with Installer in the first place (unless it really is missing).

  • How can i re-link .mpkg and .pkg files to hidden Installer?

    I am near the end of the process of setting up my new Mac Pro (early 2009) eight core. Quite the wonderful difference from my "Mirror Drive Door" dual 1.25 GHz machine!
    The Mac Pro came with Mac OS X 10.6.2 installed. I updated this to 10.6.6 via Software Update along with a slew of other updates presented there. I downloaded and installed a bunch of software. Finally, I was ready to install iLife 11 from the "CPU Drop-in" DVD that was on top of the box when the computer was originally unpacked.
    Unfortunately, it wouldn't even begin the install. The "iLife.mpkg" file, when double-clicked, returned the error message "no application associated with this document". Hours of investigation reveals that NO .mpkg or .pkg file will open; doing a "get info" on the files reveals that those files have lost their link to the Installer app.
    AND since the only installer I can find is hidden in /usr/sbin, there is no way I can re-link .mpkg and .pkg files to it via "get info".
    I downloaded Pacifist and used it to open the "Mac OS X 10.6.6 Combo" package and re-installed the Combo updater. Much to my surprise, that didn't fix the linking issue.
    I've logged in as root, but still can't re-link the package files to the Installer as /usr/ is still hidden. Is there a way I can temporarily "un-hide" the /usr directory so that "get info; open with" can see it?
    I've started from the Mac OS X installer DVD and repaired permissions on the hard disk and "repaired" the hard disk. No luck there either.
    I did a clean install of Mac OS X 10.6.2 to a different hard drive and applied the combo updater and the packages worked as expected there. So some software I installed or by running a slew of updaters via Software Update broke the link between packages and the Installer.
    I'm sure that re-linking to packages to the hidden installer app can be done via Terminal and possible other ways, but I don't know how to do it.
    Short of doing a complete Mac OS X 10.6 re-installation and update and having to re-do several days of other software installations and data transfers, I'm hoping someone will offer some solutions or tips on how to solve my problem.
    How do I re-link .mpkg and .pkg files to the Installer?

    Thanks for the reply. I know I had previously checked for the missing installer in /System/Library/CoreServices/ and I rechecked and it's still not there. But your tip spurred me to check the test 10.6.6 installation on the other hard disk and yes! It's there!
    A quick copy from the second hard disk to my current hard disk and doing the "get info" trick and everything now works wonderfully. Only one day lost to trying to figure this out. Now that the problem is fixed, quite the relief.

  • Fresh Leopard install gone Wrong - PKG Files Associated with Safari

    I just purchased a used Macbook Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz that came with Tiger installed. I upgraded to Leopard by zeroing the hard drive and reinstalling Leopard and all updates.
    The problem I am running into is that for some reason, and PKG files downloaded to install programs (i.e. Skype) will not install because the PKG file is associated with Safari. I check on my Mac Pro, and it has PKG files associated with "Installer". I tried to find "Installer" as a program on the Macbook but had no luck. Any ideas? With this being a fresh install I have NO idea how this happened. Any help is most appreciated. Thanks.

    Hmm, I tried to associate a file with the Installer, but wasn't able to get the system to tell me where it is. There is a command line version of the installer in /usr/sbin/, and that may be what the system uses under the hood, but I couldn't find a way to get to that either (I was trying to do this in the Get Info pane, under Open With).
    I don't know why pkg is associated with Safari. It could be that your launch services database got hosed somehow during your upgrade. If you're willing try something, it might be that rebuilding your launch services database will help. From the command line, run this command:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    (the above should all be on one line). This will reset, then rebuild the database. Although I don't think it's strictly necessary, restarting your machine after this command has run successfully would probably be a good idea.

  • Virtualbox - install build and header files for your current kernel

    I have initially installed virtualbox before upgrading the Arch
    Also took backup of the kernle before upgrading since kernel26 2.6.30 is having problem with virtualbox
    After upgrading I have configure the grub to use the previous kernel i.e 2.6.28
    Later  installed xorg and want to install the video drivers from VBox additions
    but running
    sh VBoxLinuxAdditions_x86.run
    i get the following
    install build and header files for your current kernel
    The current kernel version is 2.6.28 Arch
    What are the build and header files I have to install or search with pacman
    And since i have upgraded the system will I able to look up the header and build files needed for kernel 2.6.28

    dmartins - he's talking about his kernel's headers, not the kernel-headers package - they are two very differnet things.
    sant527 - when you backed up the 2.6.28 kernel, did you remember the files in /usr/src/linux-2.6.28-ARCH/ ? They're what VBox is looking for.

  • Problems with Lion and .pkg files.

    After the upgrade to Lion, i've a problem to install .pkg files. If i try to open it with double click, terminal window starts and cursor waits for commands! With Leopard the installer program started after double click on .pkg files, but with Lion "installer" seems to be disappeared.
    Same happens with some apps, when clicking they don't install, but terminal window starts...
    How to fix this problem?

    Apologies for the misspellings.
    Basically i have tried uploading my MP3 files (one by one) in my device. then i tried uploading films. then when i disconnected my device all my songs on the device is gone. i do not know what happened exactly.
    it would seem the current iTunes version is "unstable". having uploaded 50 songs, doing them one by one only to find out out it got wiped out in the device for some reason.
    any explanation for this?
    Thank you.

  • Does arch install library and header files into system when using abs?

    In traditional make way, when compiling a package, I must install some library or header file or tool packages to satisfy its depends, but after compilation, I do "make install", and run it. At runtime, library and header file and tool packages are not needed....
    This make a lot of unuseful packages are left in the system.....
    In arch linux , when I using abs to make a package, does these packages are left in the system ?
    How abs separates the compile-time depends and the runtime depends ????

    Who remove them ? user or the abs ??
    I think the best method is file dependence , not package dependence.....
    Software is arranged by package. but its dependence is file. When Install a package, pacman check its file dependence, and install the packages which include those files....
    If a  not explicit installed package 's file does not required by any other packages , it can be removed automatically !
    In this situation ,pacman can find packages that not needed after compilation, and remove them.

  • Generate .pkb and .pkg files from DB Package

    Env. Oracle 10G
    Hello,
    We have around 20 packages in our db. While making release in Production we need all packages as .pkb and .pkb. To prepare release we go to each package and copy body contents in .pkb file and specification in .pkg file. This we have to do for each package.
    Is there any way so we can automate process of creating .pkb and .pkg for each package. If someone has script or any idea, it would be helpufl.
    Thanks

    A little extension to Peter's approach
    select dbms_metadata.get_ddl('PACKAGE', object_name, owner) from dba_objects
    where object_type='PACKAGE' AND [other criteria for the packages you like ];
    / But if it is needed to generate a file for each SQL statement, the following fancy SQLplus script helps:
    set trimspool on
    set pages 0
    set feedback off
    set termout off
    set line 10000
    set heading off
    spool gen_script.sql
    select 'spool ' || object_name || '.pks
    prompt create or replace
    select text from user_source
    where name=''' || object_name || '''
    and type=''PACKAGE''
    order by line;' || '
    prompt /' || '
    spool off
    spool ' || object_name || '.pkb
    prompt create or replace
    select text from user_source
    where name=''' || object_name || '''
    and type=''PACKAGE BODY''
    order by line;' || '
    prompt /' || '
    spool off'

  • Installing script and .log file

    Hello eveyone, I've the following scriopt that installs 2 packages et copies 2 files into a specific location.
    echo installation Firebird
    sudo installer -pkg /Autonome/FirebirdSS-1.5.5-4926-powerpc.pkg -target /
    echo "Copie des fichiers necessaires pour l'application (Conf et UDF)"
    cp /Autonome/FreeAdhocUDF /Library/Frameworks/Firebird.framework/Versions/A/Resources/English.lproj/var
    cp -f /Autonome/firebird.conf /Library/Frameworks/Firebird.framework/Versions/A/Resources/English.lproj/var
    echo installation Autonome
    sudo installer -pkg /Autonome/ClientTheriaqueAutonome.pkg -target /Applications/ClientTheriaqueAutonome
    echo suppression des fichiers temporaires
    rm -rf /Autonome
    rm /Applications/ClientTheriaqueAutonome/LiveUpdate/Test.xml
    It works fine for most users, but forme some others who have Mac OS 10.5.4 there's a problem when installing the ClientTheriaqueAutonome package (I'm not sure but after the investigation,I've made I found that it is not installed in its location).
    So I'm asking your help to tell me if :
    1. There's some specification in the /Applications in the 10.5.4 Mac OS version
    2. How I must to change my script to have a log file ( to know if a command exection was succes or fail)
    3. There's an other best alternative to do the installation as I've made in the script.
    Many thanks in advance for your help and collbaoration.
    Best reguads.

    there's a problem when installing the ClientTheriaqueAutonome package
    That's probably because you're saying:
    sudo installer -pkg /Autonome/ClientTheriaqueAutonome.pkg -target /Applications/ClientTheriaqueAutonome
    According to man installer, the -target parameter is the device you want to install on, not the directory. Therefore you should specify -target / and the installer package should contain all the necessary data to install the file in /Application/ClientTheriaqueAutonome/
    2. How I must to change my script to have a log file ( to know if a command exection was succes or fail).
    How are you calling the script?
    If you're calling it in the command line you can just append '> /path/to/your.log', e.g.:
    ./install > /path/to/your.log
    If not, you can append '>> /path/to/your.log' to each command:
    echo 'Installation Firebird' >> /path/to/your.log
    sudo installer -pkg blah blah blah >> /path/to/your.log
    ... etc.
    As for an AppleScript-based solution there are several ways, but what's not clear is how the files are getting setup in the first place. Your script defines the source files as being in /Autonome - how are they getting there?

  • Clean Install Mavericks and Restoring files

    Good afternoon everyone, I want to do a clean install of Mavericks on my iMac so I have a fresh system to work with.  Having read all the blogs I think I understand how to actually do the clean install via a USB stick but there appears to be a wide range of issues when either trying to restore or transfer files backed up to time machine.  Indeed many blogs cite significant problems even accessing Time machine following the clean install.  Surely this should be simple...but appears not..!
    I'm primarily worried about restoring my email (googlemail), My 500gb itunes library and my significant library of photographs in Aperture.
    Can anyone advise on the best way to restore files following the clean install using time machine ?  My preference would be to re-install the Itunes and Aperture software from fresh and just transfer or re-import the itunes library and photograps (not easy in Aperture I know) as files...if you know what I mean !...  I'm sure I can manage transfer of all other types of files providing I can get into the back up...
    Any advice or guidance would be really appreciated..
    Cheers

    there appears to be a wide range of issues when either trying to restore or transfer files backed up to time machine
    TimeMachine doesn't have a clean install option. It's why I don't use it and prefer bootable clones instead as they are direct accessible in case I do just want grab files and change permissions to the new account, dumping the rest.
    With timed clones on seperate hardware, makes it easier to revert from a previous OS X version or optimize and defragment your boot hard drive for better performance using a clone, booting from it and reverse cloning.

    How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    I'm primarily worried about restoring my email (googlemail), My 500gb itunes library and my significant library of photographs in Aperture.
    To fresh install, you need to backup files manually to external drive (not timemachine), then wipe everything and set the machine up like brand new, with new user accounts, preferably with the same drive name (MacintoshHD) user account names, then return files to each account and do a #6 Repair Users Permissions on the files.
    ..Step by Step to fix your Mac
    iTunes shouldn't be much of a problem, provided you tag the songs in the playlist with the playlist names (attaches to the song files themselves) and use the same drive name and user account name on the fresh install so the pathnames in the itunes database matches where your files are at.
    Aperture shouldn't be much of a problem for the same reason, as long as you copy the contents of your home folders direclty back into the new account folders of the same name, again to match the pathames where your files are at.
    Gmail has a online website, so your emails are there, make sure you have the password. They should redownload to your machine once you set up mail in the new account (with the same name)
    Local email files on the existing system will be erased with the fresh install method because they are likely seure and hidden in the invisible User/Library folder, which doesn't get restored with the fresh install method. (but will with TimeMachine restores as it copies everything)
    Follow the A2 method here for a fresh install of OS X, your just targeting the existing MacintoshHD partition, a full drive wipe isn't necessary.
    Reset your Mac
    You also might want to read this also, it can be used for the fresh install method.
