Installing Multiboot Distros with Slackware

Dear all,
I’m trying to install a multiboot with multi distros, in this case Slackware and Linux Oracle. I have Slackware running for a while now and try to install it in other partition. Suppose I have Slackware in /dev/hdb and planning to install Oracle Linux in /dev/sda. My plan is:
1.     Format /dev/sda
2.     Install Oracle Linux in /dev/sda using boot disk
3.     Modify lilo.conf
4.     Run dual boot
But the problem is during the Oracle Linux boot installation:
1.     It doesn’t recognize the partition and file format that Slackware did in /dev/sda
2.     The installation disk then force me to create another partition for memory swap and root directory
3.     At first attempt I created a partition in /dev/sda with RAID format which didn’t get recognized by Slackware so that I had it wiped out at the next attempt of installation.
4.     Just before the process of partitioning /dev/sda, Oracle Linux installer from the boot disk cannot detect my dvd drive although the PC was booted from its very drive (Why?) so It was asking me if I need to point out the location of another copy of the image file, which is located in /dev/sda1. The installer read it from /dev/sda1, I think not from DVD drive. This always happens in all attempts.
5.     At the end, it cannot finish the process of the installation and I have to abort it, without knowing the reason for it. This happens in all attempts also.
Now I have the problem with slackware:
1.     The tty is messed up that makes me unable to login to KDE, it freezes whenever I try to login.
2.     The KDE configuration has changed for some reason.
My question is:
I need a strategy to fix my damage and install the multi boot and at this point I really need some input from outside.
Please help,
Val

I’m trying to install a multiboot with multi distros, in this case Slackware and Linux Oracle. That brings back some memories - my 1st time use of Linux was with Slackware on x386. The entire distro was on 2 stiffies. Slackware is of course called that ("+slack+") after the Church of the Sub-Genius slogans about pinks and slack.. {noformat} :-) {noformat}
1.     Format /dev/sda
2.     Install Oracle Linux in /dev/sda using boot disk
3.     Modify lilo.conf
4.     Run dual bootLilo is an old boot loader and not as good as Grub. Also, when installing Oracle Linux, it should install Grub by default (this will overwrite Lilo in the MBR) - and automatically update the grub.conf with additional boot options (one of which should enable you to boot Slackware).
But the problem is during the Oracle Linux boot installation:
1.     It doesn’t recognize the partition and file format that Slackware did in /dev/sdaWhat file system are you using for Slackware? And why /dev/sda? You've indicated that Slackware is in /dev/hda and that /dev/sda was formatted?
Will have to see the bootlog to diagnose this error.
Now I have the problem with slackware:
1.     The tty is messed up that makes me unable to login to KDE, it freezes whenever I try to login.
2.     The KDE configuration has changed for some reason. This will only have happened if you installed Oracle Linux into the same partition(s) that Slackware was on - as a separate install of Oracle Linux and dual booting Slackware and Oracle Linux will not cause tty and KDE problems.
My question is:
I need a strategy to fix my damage and install the multi boot and at this point I really need some input from outside.I would backup all that I need backed up. And do a format and clean install of Kubuntu 11.4 (which is the o/s Firefox is running in as I type this). In the old days it was fun to hack Linux, build your own kernels and so on. But I do not see the relevance of that today anymore for the majority of Linux users. Also, I do not see why one should use something like Oracle Linux (a server distro) for a desktop.. especially not as Ubunutu/Kubuntu is setting the standards for what a desktop distro should be.
I'm running Oracle XE on it too - so it is also capable of running server side software (within the constraints of a desktop h/w platform of course). And despite being an old Slackware user, I would not swap Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE) for any other distro (despite my personal preference for RedHat based distros and not Debian based ones).

  • Is there any chance to install sunstudio 12 on slackware 11?

    hi,
is there any chance to install sunstudio 12 on slackware 11?
i tried with no success. i used rpm2tgz on unpacked rpm's, but java 1.4.2_08 reported unsatisfied dependencies like gawk and /bin/sh.i dont understand this because i have /bin/sh and valid gawk (they come with my slack). when i use binary package for java, and try to install ss12, situation is same
    any hints?
    10x in advance

kets see the one where it keeps complaining that Java cant be installed because of other dep's when Slackware doesn't use a package management system and doesn't track dep's....
Tho i have solved this problem and have Sun Studio 12 working on my desktop, just glad the MS version will be a load easier... for the laptop.
this is only a suggestion but make an installer version with all the required stuff Java, Netbeans and whatever else it needs
and without RPM's but as one huge Tar BZ file... at least then any Linux distro can use the same one...

  • A doubt when installing multiboot

Hi there guys! I have a doubt!
Right now, I was trying to install multiboot (a multiboot usb key creator) in my arch, which I run in dual boot with crunchbang linux. When I installed arch, I skipped the grub part, because I hold onto my crunchbang grub2.
Now, when I install multiboot, pacman asks me to install grub2 and to remove grub (which, normally, eve though I skipped it in the arch install, was anyway installed in my system, without touching the MBR though). Can I go straight with this and remove grub installing grub2? Will this change my crunchbang MBR grub2 behavior? Or would it be peacefully without consequences?
    Thanks in advance!

    Greetings,
I am sorry for the trouble you're having installing this software. Can you post a copy of your installation log? I can take a look at it and hopefully get to the bottom of this.
    It should be located here:

  • Suitable distro with Pavilion 15 p050su

Hello, as the title said I need suitable distro with Pavilion 15 p050su. I tried Ubuntu 14.04 but I have problem with my wireless card. I thought to try with OpenSUSE but decided first to ask here. I think that will be good to mention that I have problem with my wireless card driver(Broadcom N43142), my wireless range is always at the minimum even when I'm infront of the router, the problem isn't in the router bucause there are other machines connected to it.

    Hi @Combat_Engineer,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are having problems with the wireless adapter on your notebook. What  operating system is currently installed? You mentioned Ubuntu 14.04. Is that still your current OS?

  • Can not install Adobe CC with a school license

As the title says it, I can't install Adobe CC with a school license.
I still get updates and can install them but when I try to open Photoshop, Illustrator, ... I always receive the message about the license.
I received a PDF from school how I can install it because I already had a license from 2013.
I followed the instructions given in the PDF, Filled in all the codes, payed the Creative Cloud, but still I receive this message.
Can somebody help me, or does somebody knows what I did wrong?

Thanks for the response, but it is already fixed. There was a problem with a redemption code of the school and they fixed it.

I installed lightroom 5 with a 30 day trial and it finished.
Yesterday I installed cc and when I open LR5 I need a serial number.
What do I do/how do I get one?
    Please help, Thank you.

Your photos remain in place, the catalog you have been using will remain. After you install Lightroom from the CC, all you have to do is open your existing catalog and continue right where you left off.

  • Cannot install SharePoint 2013 with SP1 on server 2012 R2. IIS configuration error

    Hey Guys,
I'm experiencing a problem which seems to be common considering the number of posts I've found about it, but none of the provided solutions worked for me.
I'm simply trying to install SharePoint 2013 with SP1 on a Windows Server Standard 2012 R2.
I've downloaded from the MS Volume Licensing website the "SharePoint Server 2013 with SP1" ISO file :  SW_DVD5_SharePoint_Server_2013w_SP1_64Bit_English_MLF_X19-36118. So
this is the slipstreamed version which is supposed to bring compatibility with 2012 R2.
As I do not have direct access to the Internet I need to perform an offline installation. I also downloaded all prerequisities. When I run prerequisiteinstaller.exe with the necessary arguments, I get the following :
    (Full log file is below)
    I've tried the following :
    - Restarted the server multiple times
    - Manually removing/adding IIS role + restart
    - Running the prerequisiteinstaller.exe from the DVD or from an extracted version
    - Manually installing the prerequisities
    - Installed .Net 3.5 as recommended here (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/0b597d35-b02d-4236-894d-38efc0c7c6f6/sharepoint-2013-with-sp1-install-on-windows-server-2012-r2?forum=sharepointgeneral)
None of the worked. So I'm stuck and I must completed the installation of this before the end of the week for an important project !
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you guys for the quick answer! Muche appreciated
I've tried all suggested solutions, but no luck :-(
    - tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2765260 > no help and by the way the hotfix provided is not applicable for 2012 R2.
also tried "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\aspnet_regii -enable -i" and got this :
Microsoft (R) ASP.NET RegIIS version 4.0.30319.33440Administration utility to install and uninstall ASP.NET on the local machine.Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation.  All rights reserved.Start installing ASP.NET (4.0.30319.33440).This option is not supported on this version of the operating system.  Administrators should instead install/uninstall ASP.NET 4.5 with IIS8 using the "Turn Windows Features On/Off" dialog,  the Server Manager management tool, or the dism.exe command line tool.  For more details please see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=216771.Finished installing ASP.NET (4.0.30319.33440).

For the automated install script (http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/office/DownloadInstall-SharePoint-e6df9eb8) Craig mentions that the script are not yet compatible
"SharePoint 2013 SP1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 support coming soon
I will be updating this script with support for SharePoint 2013 Service Pack 1 installations along with support for Windows Server 2012 R2 in the near future. Thank you to everyone for the interest in my scripts - it is much appreciated! "

  • Installing Windows XP with bootcamp from usb thumb on MacBook air 11'

    Hi everyone,
I have a macbook air and I'm new to macs.
I had recently installed win7 on it with bootcamp and a usb drive successfully. But, the 20g space required to install win7 was getting on my nerves (lets put it that way).
I wanted to install a windows xp copy. I erased my win7 partition. Remade a new 20g partition with bootcamp. Then I did the same steps I used to install win7 with my usb drive. But instead of copying win7 files on the drive, I copying my win xp files. Then when I booted my mac with refit and chose to boot with the usb drive (with win xp) I get the error message: non system drive error.
I do not understand what I am doing wrong, since I used the same technique that worked with win7.
Any one has a clue on how to work with this?
Thanks in advance to anyone who knows the answer.
Also if you have a macbook air and successfully installed win xp with a usb drive, I would like to know the steps you used to do it (if its not too much to ask)
I don't want to use parallels or any other virtual machine than a bootcamp copy of win xp.

I can't really assist on your issue however I can point you to the correct forum to post to. There is a forum specifically for Boot Camp, I'd recommend navigating and reposting there. The address is:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=23
This forum is specifically for MBA's however not too many people run Windows on them from what I can tell.

  • Trying to install Windows 7 with Bootcamp on my Macbook with a faulty CD drive

I am trying to install Windows 7 with Bootcamp on my Macbook A1278 (OS 10.6.8) with a faulty CD drive (CDs and DVDs get stuck in it and I had to get it removed in an Apple store, so I don't want to use it anymore). I have got a licence for the product but I am only in possession of the ISO, is there any way to install it using a USB stick?
I don't have many options while launching Bootcamp, only
"Download the Windows support software for this Mac" but when I try I get a message explaining me that the download could not continue as the software is not available,
    or
"I have the Mac OS X installation disc [...]" but obviously I can't use my CD drive so this is not an option. I tried it anyway and I created a Windows partition but when asked to "start the Windows installer", I can only continue by insering a CD.
I tried to use a USB stick and added the ISO on it but nothing has changed.
How can I install my copy on Windows?...

BobTheFisherman > Hem, yeah, that is stating the problem and not working toward resolving it.
Turbostar > I checked the link and it seems to be relating to the first video I have seen on the subject. I tried to install Tuxera then to work with rEFIt, but I did not get any result yet (I don't know if I am doing something wrong during the USB writing process as many different ways are explained on different websites).
So far my last try was to launch Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool on VMware Fusion but it the only disk shown is A:\ Removable disk (not the name of my USB) and it is stated that the disk is being used by another program, even though it's not open on the Mac side.
Some websites are advising to write the copy of windows on a USB via a PC and then launch it on the Macbook, so I might try that in the next few days. I will keep you updated.
If anyone has another option I might not have think about, or an advice on how to efficiently create a bootable Windows setup USB with my Mac, please let me know!

  • I can no longer boot up in osx after installing windows 7 with bootcamp

After installing windows 7 with boot camp I am no longer able to access my osx side, I do not receive an option when holding alt when turning on my MacBook

What options do you get? If you don't get any options then you may not be pressing and holding the option key long enough or you are pressing it too early or too late.

  • I am having problem with trying to install the printer with wireless connection.i have windows 7

the blue light on top of the printer blinks very fast and intermitenly.  i cannot install the printer with wireless.  I tried with the CD that came with the printer but the green install bar just stops and freezes.  I have a 4 month old Dell laptop.  Printer just purchased from HP is Laser Jet Professional P1102w.

Are there any third party firewalls installed (e.g. Kaspersky, Norton, BitDefender, etc.)?  It sounds like something is blocking the software and third party firewalls have been known to block communication with the printer.
How far in the installation process do you get (what options are you able to get to)?
Is the USB cable connected at the start of the installation?
Do you receive any errors at all?  If so, what are they?
Have you tried using Smart Install?  Smart Install works by connecting the USB cable to the computer.  By default, you should get a prompt to run a file.  Running this file starts the Smart Install process.
This video is a good guide to Smart Install.

You can install a 64-bit Windows 7 or Vista version in your Mac. Make sure you downloaded these drivers > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1630 Also, if you have the Snow Leopard DVD you used to upgrade your Mac or the OS X DVD that came with your Mac, you can use it to install the Boot Camp drivers
