Installing new aluminum keyboard

I'm due to receive a new aluminum keyboard this afternoon and I've got a Mac Pro running 10.4.10.
Questions:
1.Should I apply the new 1.2 keyboard update prior to swapping my old keyboard for the new or install the update and then swap the keyboards.
2. With the new keyboard do I need to re-run the bootcamp 1.4 update or will the update (1.4, already installed) pick the new keyboard up for my bootcamp/xp drive?

"I just tried this. Go into System Preferences -> Display. Turn off Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes. Now move the Brightness slider right and left, left and right. Turn on Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes. When I changed it from far left to right then left again it was ok."
Hey, thanks for the tip Neil. I was trying to figure out why my computer would dim and then get brighter. It would keep changing after every little thing i'd do. Honestly, it was freakin annoying.

  • New Aluminum Keyboard Keys Don't Work

    Hi All,
I just brought home my new Aluminum Keyboard that was released along with New iMac. As you see I'm on PowerMac G5.
I've installed Keyboard Update 1.1 and I've got my Fn key working. However, for the life of me I can't figure out how to get f4 key to get to work. There is a new symbol (deshboard) on it and when I was at the apple store I was shown that by pressing the f4 (deshboard) key it would start the deshboard. Mine doesn't. Same thing with f3 (expend) all windows key.
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,

i have no problem with thes f3 or f4 keys or the Fn key.Plugged it in hit software update and then installed Keyboard update 1.1, works fine
I do have a problem with the right hand Shift key though, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt work at all.
Anybody else have this problem or is it all function key issues only/

  • Resetting PRAM with new aluminum keyboard

I just updated the firmware to my aluminum keyboard via Software Update. I still cannot reset the PRAM by the old tried-and-true method of holding down command, option, PR. Lately resetting the PRAM has been needed. Anyone have any idea on how to do this?

joshz -- I upgraded my memory from 1 to 2 G and then reset the PRAM 3 times using my old keyboard. This didn't help. I plugged my new aluminum keyboard back in and restarted holding down the option key. My Mini didn't know how to handle that! It got hung up at the blue screen and went no further. I had seen on another forum the suggestion of replacing the new aluminum keyboard. Apple gave me another which worked fine at my local Apple Store, but acted no different when I hooked it up to my Mini. So -- I still have my problem. I wonder how broad an issue this with folks that have upgraded to the new keyboard on their slightly older macs.

  • IPhone + New Aluminum Keyboard + MBP = No Sleep?

I just got the new wired aluminum keyboard two day ago, hooked it up to my MBP through my ACD's USB hub. Somehow the computer just keeps waking up from sleep after a while.
I did an experiment yesterday. Put the computer to sleep mode for entire day and check on it every couple hours. The computer does stay in sleep mode. However, I noticed whenever I have my iPhone nearby, the computer will wake up after a while. Anybody experienced same problem? I did also disabled the bluetooth and wake-for-ethernet.

i hooked my old keyboard back on this morning, observed it for about 40min with my iphone sitting next to it and it stays in sleep mode. I'm gonna let it sleep again tonight using my old keyboard, if no problem then I might have got a defected new aluminum keyboard.

  • New aluminum keyboard - Zapping pram & bootcamp?

    Hi,
I've just bought the new aluminum keyboard running on an iMac core 2 duo - Leopard with all current updates and I'm unable use key commands on booting, (alt=select a boot drive, command-option-p-r =Zap the pram etc)
The keyboard works fine once inside Leopard.
Any ideas on how I can fix this problem?
    Regards,
    Dave

It could be a firmware problem. The correct keyboard map may not be loading until the OS loads it, which means the old keyboard would be mapped at boot time. You might want to check the Apple knowledge base on this one.

  • New aluminum keyboard = G5 zombie?

Normally I use ctrloptioneject to put my G5 Quad to sleep. With the new aluminum keyboard and the software update, this key combo turns the computer into a zombie. The mouse cursor disappears as expected, but the drives don't spin down and the screen stays on. Nothing but a reboot will bring it out of this state. I tried the same key combo with my previous wireless keyboard and I get the same results, leading me to believe it's a software issue.
    Anyone else getting this?
    thx

Ah...it seems the computer didn't like that I plugged the keyboard into my PCI-E USB card. I unplugged my iPod Shuffle dock (which was plugged into the G5's last remaining native USB port) and swapped it out with the keyboard. Now the keyboard correctly puts the machine to sleep. Odd, because I knew there were issues with USB peripherals preventing sleep, but I thought it was limited to cameras and drives, not keyboards.
Of course, now I can't put the computer to sleep with the Shuffle docked, but at least I have control over that.

  • Num Lock on new Aluminum Keyboards?

Anyone know how to enable Number Lock on the new aluminum keyboards? This is usually not an issue with Macs (as by default num-lock is assumed on), but I use remote desktop to control a Windows server and I can not use my number pad because you would normally need to engage num lock to be able to do this on Windows.
On my old Apple keyboard there was an actual Num Lock button (shared function with the Clear button).
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

Try any of the following F13 to F19, because an standard pc keyboard does not have theses keys, so it might be possible.

    hank you.

Same here, have you figured out a solution?
The iMac aluminum keyboard has no designated key, and the Leopard solutions do not work.

  • New Aluminum Keyboard

Received new iMac keyboard today, hooked it up, downloaded Apple Keyboard Update 1.1, and rebooted. Except for the F3 and F4 keys, everything works fine. F3 only brings up Expose, and F4 only brings up Dashboard if I assign these keys appropriately in system preferences, and use fn in combo with each. This is with the option to use standard function keys turned off.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions?

www.macfixit.com posted one guys work around which fixes this problem.
I only followed steps 3 through 5 (I figured why start all the way back at the old 10.4.3 disc) and it worked! I now have a fully funtional F3 F4 keys on my aluminum keyboard.
Apple, are you listening? How about another Keyboard Update to fix this issue the right way?
MacFixIt reader Joe Mullins writes: "I fixed the dashboard and expose keys on my keyboard. The problem is apparently that Dock.app isn't getting updated properly. I fixed it using my original install disks, 10.4.10 combo updater, keyboard update and Pacifist."
    Joe's process is as follows:
    1. Insert Install disk for 10.4.x and open /System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg/ with pacifist.
    2. Within Pacifist, navigate to /System/Library/Core Services. Click on Dock.app and click install. When it's uncompressed, it will ask if you would like to update or replace. Click replace.
    3. When that's finished, open the 10.4.10 combo update package with pacifist and navigate to the dock.app again. Click install, and this time when it asks, make sure to click update.. not replace.
    4. When that's finished, open the keyboard software 1.1 mpackage, click the arrow to reveal the contents of AppleKeyboardSoftware_Cmn.pkg, navigate to dock.app one more time, click install and then update once again. Not replace.
    5. Once this procedure is finished, you can force quit dock.app and the keys should work.

  • Problem with a new aluminum keyboard

I just bought an aluminum keyboard but when i press, for example, the sound buttons my dashboard appears rather than changing the sound. How do i get the buttons working?

I have exactly the same problem. I just replaced my old Aluninium Apple wireless keyboard that got damaged. I am running OS10.5.8 on a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I just unboxed my new French wireless keyboard that I ordered form the Apple online store, and can use the sound buttons! I get the dashboard or the old F3 key instead.
DMarsh thanks for your tip, the box is unticked, but the F keys are still scrabbled. My old Apple wireless English keyboard is working fine (3 batteries).
I think that the new keyboards are not fully compatible with 10.5. Is snow leopard ok?.
Lion seems to have new functionalities. I understand the need to update the hardware accordingly, but I am not very happy as it is not clearly mentioned that the new wireless keyboard does not properly work with the previous systems!!!! Come on Apple the sound keys should at least work.
I looked on here and could not find any sofware update. I presume that they expect us to upgrade to Lion.
I get back to apple store tomorrow to get a refund or get an old model shipped.

  • New aluminum keyboard - Remap volume & player keys to F13 - F19?

(I couldn't see a 'Keyboards' or 'Other Hardware' section of the forum so thought I'd post here).
I've just bought the new aluminium keyboard. I'm loving it apart from the placement of the volume keys, iTunes/QuickTime control keys etc. I want to remap them to the F13 through to F19 keys.
Also I'd like to remove/disable the brightness controls from F1 & F2 (can't think why they thought of placing them there?)
    How would I do this?

    Also I'd like to remove/disable the brightness controls from F1 & F2
After you install the keyboard software
    <http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/keyboardsoftwareupdate12.html>
go to the "Keyboard Shortcuts" tab of "Keyboard & Mouse" system preference, scroll down to "Display" (near the bottom), and uncheck it.

  • G4 DA can't detect new Aluminum Keyboard

I just got a refurbished Aluminum Keyboard off ebay (MB110LL/A) and it won't detect in either my Power Mac or my CRT iMac. I even plugged it into my wife's XP laptop and it detected it, bu couldn't install the driver. Is there a setting I need to change to get this going or did I just get a defective one?

Well, that doesn't happen with this keyboard. I have a windows keyboard that does that, when I plug it in, it says that it can't detect the keyboard and to press the button to the right of the shift key to try and detect it. That doesn't happen with the aluminum keyboard. And it still shows up as "vend_device" under the system profiler, which is just weird.

  • How do clean the new aluminum keyboard?

I have a new wireless aluminimum keyboard (the thin model) and recently spilt beer on it. Now the keys are all gummy. Does anyone know how to remove the keys to clean them? Or where I might be able to find some help?
I've seen some self-help sites for the older wireless keyboards, but not the new aluminum model. Any help at all would be appreciated as the keyboard is rather new still.
    Thanks!
    Sam

Just an FYI, I just recently cleaned one that had a mug of hot chocolate spilled into it. Half the keys didn't work after the spill.
I ran scalding hot water through it (basically it was 100% soaking) and then let it air dry for a few days. All the keys now work except one.
I'm tempted to rip off that key and manually fix it if I can (it's the f12/volume up).

  • New aluminum keyboard for 24" iMac-10-key numbers not working??

I've got a new 24" intel aluminum iMac I've only had for 2 weeks.
Just today, the 10-key number pad stopped working & my programs froze up with no response from the might mouse plugged into the USB port on the keyboard.
The keyboard viewer shows all of the keys being recognized & Apple Hardware Test showed no issues.
I re-booted several times, did a permission repair & ran MacJanitor & when I rebooted again, I don't get any freeze-ups so far, but I do not have the function of the 10-key portion of my new aluminum iMac keyboard.
Very strange, but it does seem to be software related.
Something of interest: Only the 789-456+1230.enter keys are not working. Those above the 789 are working fine.
And to re-iterate, the keys are all being recognized by the keyboard viewer onscreen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't end up taking it in - I created a new user account & there were no problems with my keyboard.
I transferred my home folder to the new account & started basically fresh.
I guess my old user account was corrupted or messed up somehow.
I have done this once before on my 1book g4 laptop & it also worked.
Thanks for the suggestion, I was getting ready to pack it up for a trip to the Apple Store & remembered to try this at the last minute!
    Thanks again

  • New aluminum keyboard, 1st Gen MacPro

Curious about this.. I applied some kind of update after getting this keyboard for Christmas, firmware I guess. It works fine, but I am curious about the F17,18,19 keys. WOW doesn't seem to recognize them. Could be WOW but when I go into System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse>Keyboard tab>Change Keyboard Type...
The first message is that "keyboard can not be identified" etc. "Continue" yields "press the key to the right of the shift key" and that yields "You have pressed a key on your build-in keyboard. Please press the keys on your external keyboard."
This seems incorrect to me and maybe has bearing on the F17-19 issue...
    Any ideas or similar experiences?

I have the same keyboard and Mac Pro and the only difference in the profiler readout is that mine says
    Version: 0.69
Did you download and install the Apple Keyboard Updater? Not sure what the latest version is now, but it was a mandatory update. It should be available on the Downloads page on this site.
