Installing new HDD into an iMac G5 with SATA

Installing new HDD into an iMac G5 with SATA and would like to know how to migrate the old system over to the new drive. Can I use a USB2 external drive, move all the old data, then select the new system as the boot system?

Yes.
But you might do better with a program like SuperDuper, as it will be sure to copy any hidden files as well.

  • Problems after installing new HDD into Satellite M70-151

I have a Satellite M70-151 the hard drive gave up and was unreadable, prior to this I was using with my Desktop via a router it worked great. I had no option but to install a new Hard Drive now in the System Manager I get Yellow question marks against:
    Other Devices:
    ? Mass Storage Controller
    ? Network Controller
    ? PCI Modem
    ? Video Controller (VGA compatable)
I have searched and searched but cannot find any drivers for these 4 things
I have sound but only faint, I no longer have a wireless capability Yes I have tried to install the correct (as advised from Toshiba) Lan Driver [LInk to driver|http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_driver_details.jsp?ID=58122&OSID=10&drive rLanguage=42&selectedLanguage=13&driverCountry=41& selectedCountry=8]
When I try to install it says "The device may not be present or could have been ejected/unplugged from the system.
    Insert or Reinsert now"
I know I am being thick but I was under the impression that the Lan was built into the Notebook? :_|
I would be sincerely grateful for any advice from my Peers. :)

    Hello Stuart
To be honest I really do not know what you do exactly. After HDD exchange, for me, the first step you should do is to make clean OS using delivered recovery media. It is fastest and best way to have fresh installed OS.
So, if you do not have this recovery media you must use original Microsoft installations CD. all drivers, tools and utilities for this notebook model you can find and download from Toshiba support page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads.
Before you start drivers installation, please download and check Installations Instructions document. Please follow the installations order. It is very important and following this installations order you will be able to install all Toshiba stuff properly.

Other than put disc in you don't give much info about what you've done. With the install disc inserted restart your Mac while holding the C key, that should start it up from the install disc. Should also work fine with a wireless Apple keyboard.

  • Installing new hdd on dv7

So I am about to install a new hdd into my dv7, but remove battery, cover, then says to slide drive with pull tap on drive, but doesn't seem to move any direction. I have never replaced a drive on my laptop before and do not want to damage anything. But what am I missing please help.
    Thanks,
    Ken
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Kenny sent me a personal massage with his problem on how to remove the hard drive, so this was my answer to him. Ultimately the problem was that the tab that was to be pulled on to remove the drive was tucked underneath, so there was nothing to pull on. For someone who has never removed a hard drive, this would not be an obvious thing to figure out.
There are a whole bunch of pictures that I sent him that I thought me be very useful here. The photos are of a dv8.
It should be just sitting in there. Do you have a digital camera. If you do I will help you with the steps to upload some pictures so I can see what is going on. What is your model number again. You can also use a small screw driver to gently pry up on the blue mounting seats.
Here I am grasping on the small pull pull tab to unplug the connection from the mother board. This connection is snapped in there quite well and requires a firm and gentle pull.
This shows the drive plug disconnected from the mother board.

  • Installing new hdd in lenovo u310

Hye guys.. recently, my hdd in lenovo u310 is broken and bought a new hdd (Western Digital) .. after installing this hdd into my lenovo, i want to put the windows 7 and other drivers but unfortunately, i dont have the cd driver.. and my alternative is to create the driver using usb.. Is this step can be done?Does anyone know how to create the lenovo driver using usb in proper way? Please help me.. really appreciate your help

Yes, you can buy Snow Leopard, however, that's just the operating system, and does not include the iLife applications that come with the system (you could buy iLife separately too).  If your MacBook meets Lion requirements, you could go there too.
    Lion Requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory (4GB recommended)
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space

  • Clean install vs. time machine recovery after installing new HDD

    Hello All,
I have got actually two questions, but I think I only can do one issue at the time. Anyway: Here are my specs and question:
    1. I have got a 2010 MacBook Pro with a 320 Gb HDD which seems to be on its way to lala land (crashes almost once every quarter year)
    2. I have backed up my Mac with TimeMachine to uptodate
    3. I have created a boot disk and purchased a new 1 Tb HDD to be installed
    4. I plan to install new HDD in a bit
    So here is the question:
Shall I make a clean install of Mavericks (and if so, how do I get all my e-mail and other data onto the new HDD), or should I just go with the latest TimeMachine update?
(Also: If I partitioned the HDD and designate one only for apps and the other only for data, how would I do that?)
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. ... thanks, theo

Thank you for your swift responce and help
So this solution would remove the "clutter" and restore performace?

  • Dv6000, installed new HDD, used recovery disk DVD, computer keeps restarting on it's own

    HP dv6402ca
Installed new HDD - WD Scorpio Blue 500G
I ordered the recovery disk DVD from Computer Surgeons.
I installed the recovery in drive bay and restarted as per instructions. Everything went fine and when it started windows for the first time that went ok as well, it kept restarting like it said it would to install all software. Now, with everything installed it is still restarting on it's own. I let it go on overnight as I thought this might be normal, but when I got up 5 hours later it was still restarting.
I don't what else to do, please help.
    Andrew

    Hi, Andrew:
Sometimes it takes a while. You may want to abort the installation and try again.
You may also want to use this workaround if you can't get the recovery disks to work.
If you can read your 25 character MS product key, you can make your own Windows Vista installation disk. Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them (just short of going ahead with the actual install) and they appeared to work perfectly.
Apparently when you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-vi...
After you successfully install vista, you can download the drivers you need from your PC's support and driver page.

I cannot install FF Mobile into my LG P505R with Android 2.2...why????

In general there are two classes of CPUs in Android devices ARMv6 and ARMv7. Firefox requires ARMv7 devices. If you don't see Firefox in the Android market then you are likely on an ARMv6 device.
In the future we hope to provide a solution that allows Firefox to run on ARMv6.

Try an SMC Reset. (System Management Controller)
Shutdown>unplug from power for ten minutes>press and hold in the power button for ten seconds>startup again.
Also try a PRAM Reset. (Parameter RAM)
Shutdown. At the bootup chime, hold down CMD-Option-P-R together, wait for two more chimes, total three, then let go of all keys to finish booting,
If this doesn't do it, run the Hardware Test in Extended

  • After installing new HDD, some iPhoto Events/Photos won't display

Problem: I upgraded to 1TB HDD a couple of days ago and tried to use the System Restore from Backup under Disk Utility. It never worked, got to a blue screen and just hung. So I reloaded Snow Leopard and then used Setup Assistant to move Apps/Files/Settings from my Time Machine Backup.
Today I was going through files to see if anything was missing and found a number of Events from 2010 that wouldn't display in iPhoto '08, just dark squares but with the event name underneath.
Rolling the mouse over the empty square displayed the correct number of photos for the event but photos wouldn't display.
Next I "Browsed" the Time Machine Backup (from iPhoto) and the same Events were also empty on Time Machine Backups.
The funny thing is the empty events are scattered meaning I have a full Events from Feb and March 2010 but empty events from Jan, Feb and May 2010. And then when I go into the Empty Events on Time Machine, I can call up the photo number but the photo won't display.
Is there a way to recover these photos? I'm pretty sure there on the TM backup and also on my new HDD.
As a "suspenders/belt" type person, I have the photos backed up on a Windows PC but rather work through this problem first.
iMac 20" 2.4 Ghz Mac OS X (10.6.4) AEBSn AXg

You can enter TM while in iPhoto and do a search for some of the missing photos by file name. When you find a version that appears to have them in exit TM, go to your Pictures folder, reenter TM, go to that version and restore the entire library. I'd keep both your current library and the restored. Then you can check to see if the missing photos are in the restored library.
If neither library have all of the photos but do combined you can use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to merge the two libraries into a new 3rd library setting the option to not import duplicates. That should get you a complete library.
    OT
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic report (with a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic") under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as a hang report.

  • Warranty void as installed new HDD, but I still have the orginal?

    Hello,
I have recently installed a new 200GB Hitachi HDD 7200rpm on my laptop, I know this will void my warranty, but as I still have the original HDD safe and sound, will the warranty still stand if say... the technicians were to come round to fix my laptop because of an unrelated issue, but see that the HDD was upgraded; will they still fix the laptop anyway after I show them the original? It's a long shot I know, but the 40GB HDD that came with the laptop only leaves me little room after installing Vista.
Has my upgrade TOTALLY nullified my claims to the warranty? Even if I just say... switch back and install the original HDD in my system just before the technicians come to my house? But wouldn't that be the same as if say...I just show the technician the original HDD upon their arrival while having the upgraded HDD inside the laptop.
A bit confusing I know, but I am in a dilemma, because the Toshiba guys are set come round my place to look at my laptop under the warranty, and I'm concerned that they will not fix my laptop because I upgraded to a better and faster HD.
Thank you, I hope someone replies.

    Hi Mohin
I would try to clarify your question.
The warranty will be canceled only, if you will disassemble the notebook.
I presume the notebook was equipped with an HDD slot at the bottom of the unit and you need to remove only one screw to remove the little HDD slot cover. Am I right?
So in such case the upgrade of parts like memory or the HDD will not avoid the warranty.
But its a good idea to keep the old HDD which were delivered together with the notebook.
    Best regards

  • Install new OS into desktop and laptop?

I haven't opened the package yet, but I bought Tiger last night at an Apple store and am hoping to install it on my G5 iMac and my Powerbook laptop (I'm traveling soon).
Do I have to go back to the store and get a Family Pack for an additional $70? I wasn't able to upload the new system and had to buy a new one, but his hurts.

A single-user license only allows you to legally install on one CPU at a time. Installing on more than one CPU at a time is a violation of the license agreement.
