Installing new layer styles in PSE 7

What is the correct way to install new layer styles into pse 7? ( I use Vista)
Do I move my extracted style file into the layer styles folder by following this pathway: program data>adobe>photoshop elements>7.0>photo creations>layer styles.
Do I need to create a metafile too?
Thank you for helping me, I have about a dozen styles I need to add, but I am unsure how to get it done properly.

Hello,
You need to create a metadata.xml file too to view it in a specific category of your choioce.
You need to paste the two things :
1) .asl file.
2) metadata.xml,
to the following location:
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\8.0\Photo Creations\layer styles.
Here you need to add the two files and relaunch PSE. This will show you the presets in the layer styles category with.
While creating the metadat.xml file you need to take care of two things:
1) Add a new category name so that you can easily find them.
2) You need to verify that Type value is set "Style  as mentioned :  <type value="style" />
Hope this helps you.

  • Installing new layer styles in PSE8

    Hi
I am trying to install new layer styles in PSE8 using Vista. I  can get them to appear in the "All" section but I am trying to get them  to appear in the dropdown list with no success.
I have created an  xml file with the same name as the .asl file and this contains the  following:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <PSEContent  xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/PSEContent/2.0/">
        <subscription  value="free" />
        <type value="style" />
         <category value="$$$/content/category/type/metalstyles=metal styles"  />
    </PSEContent>
File names = metal styles.asl  and metal styles.xml
I have rebuilt the following 2 files
    C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop  Elements\8.0\ThumbDatabase.db3
    C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop  Elements\8.0\Locale\en_us\MediaDatabase.db3
Could someone tell me  what I'm doing wrong
    Thanks

A program-installer has come to my attention:

Does this work? It may be just the thing for those of us not familiar with the manual process for installation.

  • Is there a way to organize Layer styles in PSE 9 for mac?

Hi, I'm a digital scrapbooker.  I just installed some new layer styles. They loaded successfully, but they are awfully difficult to find among all of the default layer styles (and there's no way to search for them in the drop down box).  Is it possible to create a category for them in the dropdown box so they're easier to find?
    Thanks!

You'll get better answers on that in the proper PSE forum.

  • Save layer style in PSE 9

I have just learned how to make a layer style in PSE 9 but I do not
know how to save it as a layer style.  Could someone please help me
or direct me to someplace that can help me.
    Thank you so much

I’m not really sure; it could be a Mac problem.
This is the Adobe statement on Lion:
Mac OS 10.7 has some exciting new features such as Autosave, Restore, Versioning, Full Screen Mode, and more multi-touch gestures. For Adobe applications to fully support these features, additional product development is required. Adobe is working to address this issue.
There is one other thing you could try. Open a photo in the Editor and then hold down the Cmd+Opt+Shift Keys and press the letter S
It’s also possible to delete the save for web preferences and then re-start the program to re-build them. This involves holding down Cmd+Opt keys and clicking Save for Web under the File menu. However this may not be possible if save for web is grayed out.
Please let us know if you get it fixed.

  • I'm trying to install a layer style (.asl) in photoshop cc 2014 and I get the error message 'Could not place the document 'filename.asl' because no parser or file format can open the file.' Any suggestions?

I get the same error when trying the same thing with the default styles, so it's not the file.

So, if you click on one on of the layer style sets already on the list, such as Text Effects 2, you get the same message?
Which version of mac os x are you using?
Did you upgrade your mac os with photoshop cc 2014 already installed?
Do you have the lastest version of photoshop cc 2014, which should be 2014.2.1
(listed at the top of Help>System Info from within photoshop)
Do you see the same layer styles as shown above on your list?
Have you moved/copied any plugins from an earlier version of photoshop to the photoshop cc 2014 plugins folder?
The layer styles shown on the list above are the styles that ship with cc 2014 and should be in
    /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CC 2014/Presets/Styles
(the mac applications folder where all the other mac applications are installed)
You might try resetting the preferences, but you might need to uninstall photoshop cc 2014 and then reinstall.
(don't drag the cc 2014 to the trash, but use the Uninstall Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 in the photoshop cc 2014 application folder)
    To reset the preferences
Press and hold down the Shift+Command+Option keys while starting photoshop cc 2014
Keep holding the keys down until you get a dialog asking if you want to delete the adobe photoshop settings file
    Press Yes

  • Can't See New Layer Styles In PS Elements V. 6 For Mac

Can someone tell me why I cannot see new styles after I have installed them in PS Elements V6 for Mac. I have used Elements 4 for Mac for about a year, and I've just recently bought the new version. The book says you install them the same way in V. 6 as I did in V4. But they do not show up in the drop down list.  I use styles a lot in V. 4. Thank you.

I did just as you said -- deleted both the mediaDatabase.db3 and the thumbdatabase.db3 -- they were not in folders other than 6.0 folder. I'm not sure what you meant by "repair permissions", but it did run through rebuilding itself after I restarted PSE.
Do you think it might help if I created XML files? I read something about them in the manual, but it sounded so difficult, I was afraid to try it.
I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

  • Install layer styles in effects in pse 8

unable to install some layer styles in effects-please advise how I can complete installations.

Well, I don't know where windows explorer comes in, but you want to take the .asl files (you must unzip them if they're in a zip file), and put them into C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photosho Elements\8.0\Photo Creations\layer styles. Then you will need to delete the file MediaDatabase.db3, which is in C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photosho Elements\8.0\locale\en_US. When you next start PSE give it time to rebuild this file before you do anything (when you see the icons reappear in the effects panel, it's done).

  • PSE 7 - Layer Styles don't show on white background?

    Hello!
I've encountered some odd, but repeatable, situations with PSE 7's Layer Styles. If you have a white background, add a layer to that and then apply the Layer Style (like "Blue Ghost," "Heavy Noisy," "Noisy," "Radioactive," and others) you do not see the Layer Style.
However, the layer is marked with the "fx" symbol. And...what really surprised me is that if I change the color of my background layer to anything but white, they then show up! Note that things like "Radioactive" is a bright green edging layer styleit should easily show up on white. And my layer that has the layer style applied to it is above the background layer and visible. The picture part of the layer is quite visible, but the layer style is not as long as the background layer is white.
I think this is a glitch/bug...but it's odd, because it's not there in PSE 6 and I can't imagine why Adobe would change this in PSE 7...and as far as I know there is no "new" feature associated with Layer Styles in PSE 7.
If anyone has any other information on this or a work-around, I'd be most interested in hearing about it.
    Thank you!

    Beverly,
I can't imagine that another Beverly Schulz would be posting to this forum other than the one that teaches for ed2go. Since your name popped up here I want to take the opportunity to say that I took PSE5 Advanced and it was the best ever online class I have taken. The knowledge has served me well and I still refer to my notes.
I hope someone can solve your problem. I am now working in PSE7 and am interested in the responses.
    Best of luck.

  • Pse 7.0 can you add a 3rd party layer style to existing category?

I've seen and understand the instructions I found on installing a layer style from a third party, but it shows creating a new category for each one through the xml.  I have a bunch of free layer styles that actually fit into existing categories (like drop shadow, for example).  Is there a way to add them to the existing drop shadow category?
I have three separate .asl files for these, and each of these third party drop shadow .asl files already contain more than one style.  But I would like having them all within the one drop shadow category.  That is what I did in 5.0.
    Thanks!

I think I figured it out.  Found this:  http://www.hummiesworld.com/plugins.html .  Thanks!

  • Installing layer styles

Besides an .asl file, what are the requirements for creating a new layer style?

    The directions here should work:
    http://digitalscrapper.com/forums/showthread.php?5647-Install-Layer-Styles-in-Photoshop-El ements-9-or-10%97Win
The only additional step i would do is delete the MediaDatabase.db3 in
    C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\10.0\Locale\en_us
at the same time you delete the ThumbDatabase.db3 in
    C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\10.0
Also, if you want the same layer styles to be on the list for your shapes and text, you can copy the layer styles to
(just the .asl files, not the .xml files)
    C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\10.0\Presets\Styles

  • How do I create layer styles in CS3 to use in elements?

    Hi,
sorry if this is a very broad question, I am new to CS3. I usually use elements.
I really want to create lots of different layer styles that I can save and use in Elements.
Can someone tell me, or direct me to a good tutorial for making new layer styles in photoshop.
Also is it easy to save the new style so I can load to elements?
I appreciate any help with my question,
    Thanks so much!!

This is not the "PSE" forum.
You want the Ps Elements forum across the hall:

  • PSE7, xp, how to load layer styles? no .db3 file found

I have read all kinds of information about how to load custom layer styles and I've come to the conclusion that I need to install all styles into the folder where the other styles live (presets>styles) and I need an .xml file for each style to see the style in elements program and I need to delete the original .db3 file and let elements rebuild it when it opens but I cannot find an original .db3 file...anywhere.  Nor do I have any existing .xml files that coordinate with the original layer styles to manipulate for the new layer styles.  What am I missing?

    Hi,
You would have to follow these steps -
    Hi,
These steps would help you get them back.
    1 - Quit Elements
    2 - Go to the path - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\en_US (for XP)
    { or Vista - C:\ ProgramData\ Adobe\ Photoshop Elements\ 6.0\ Locale\ en_US\ }
(If you aren't in the US, use the appropriate Locale)
Note that the "Application Data" is a hidden directory, so you will have to enable "Show hidden files and folders" in the Folder Options in order to be able to see it.
3 - You should see a file named MediaDatabase.db3. Rename the file to something else, such as MediaDatabase.old
4 - Restart the Elements Editor. You will see it rebuilding the database. Do not touch anything. It will take a while to rebuild. After thats done all things should be back to normal.
Hope you're able to find the files and it works for you.

  • Elements 9 problems with layer styles

Hi, I've searched the forum but still been unable to install my layer styles in element 9.
The asl files are currently in c/program files 86/adobe/elements9/presets/styles but they are not showing up when I launch the editor.  I've even tried graphix add o matic to no avail.  If anyone can tell me where I'm going wrong I'd be really grateful.  I'm running windows 7 on pc

Install the styles in the hidden folder:
    "C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\9.0\Photo Creations\layer styles"
    Then delete this hidden file:
    "C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\9.0\Locale\en_us\MediaDatabase.db3"
Start PSE, and wait while it automatically rebuilds that database file.
You'll have to temporarily change your folder options to enable viewing hidden files.

  • Layer styles gone rogue?

    (P-shop CS5, Mac OS 10.6.8)
I have a doc with several layers. I have layer style "Bevel & Emboss" applied to an element on one layer. But, when I apply layer style "Inner Shadow" to an element on another layer, it messes with the layer style settings on my first layer! This  happens when I change the "angle" setting. The layers are not linked, and the first layer style was not "option-dragged" to the second layer. It was a brand new layer style.  Anyone have any ideas what's going on? My best guess is that Pshop may have an automatic "dummy proof" function to assure that the shadows are all casting in the right direction in your composition.
    Thank you-

You forgot to uncheck the "use global angle" option.
Normally the angles are linked within the document to keep all the shadows/highlights consistent.
