Installing new OS on new hard disk - multiboot

Hello,
I am somewhat new to Solaris and I am progressively learning new things every day and working towards my SCSA.
I have a Sun Ultra 24 work station running Solaris 10. I am planning on adding an additional hard drive and installing Windows XP on it. If possible, my goal is to be able to choose an OS at startup.
I have read [http://multiboot.solaris-x86.org/| but there are a few things I am not clear on... they somewhat mention what I am trying to do but the scenarios I read about is installing Solaris 10 with a new hard disk on an existing Windows installation. I am trying to do the opposite!
Is it possible to add a new blank hard drive restart the PC and then boot from the cd-rom to install XP without damaging my current Solaris 10 installation? and also what do I need to do in order choose an OS at startup.
I am concerned that if I do this, windows will change the MBR of my primary hard drive (the one with Solaris) and allow only windows to boot.
Look forward to your replies, thanks!

It's much easier if you do this in the reverse order. Windows first then Solaris.
If not Windows will declare itself to be the only OS in existence as per Microsoft norms and will blindly ignore anything else on the disk.
So you will need to mark the Solaris partition as active and reboot.
After that add the following to your menu.lst file located in the /boot directory:
title Windows
     rootnoverify (hd0,0)
     chainloader +1
===
modify 0,0 as necessary.
alanThat's maybe what you want that Windows doesn't see the other disk.
If you put Solaris first then the Grub bootloader is also on the first drive.
Unless you would change this in your BIOS (boot from the 2nd), starting GRUB on the 2nd drive then
chainload to the first.

Had to buy a new PC as the hard disk of the old one broke and lost all purchases, but still have them on the iPhone. How can I sync them back to the new PC in iTunes without losing them?

    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • Recently upgraded Mac 24" to Lion (clean install) and now no external hard disks work with Time Machine

Recently upgraded Mac 24" to Lion (clean install) and now no external hard disks work with Time Machine.
installed new internal disk first with fresh 10.7.3 Lion software. Also upgrade ram to 4GB. Work great, super fast.
BUT.... my WD 1TB firewire400 external disks no longer work with the Lion enabled machine now.
FURTHER... I read somewhere that WD is problematic with Lion but Seagate was not... so I went and bought a new 3TB Seagate GoFlex.
When it didnt work properly either, I patiently searched and found a software/firward upgrade and applied.
    I re-partitioned disk to extened/journaled standard, etc.
Then assigned the particition to Time Machine. Drive turned the blue/grey color, so I thought it would work.
But, it has now been in "preparing" mode in Time Machine for HOURS....
What is up Apple? So dissappointed. Ive read these type of problems are notorious with Lion and I wish I never upgraded.
Are you trying to make issues with External disks, to drive people to iCloud?  That trick ont work in me. I will not reward bad behaviour Apple.
Please provide a fix... I wasted hours/days screwing around with this, instead of using the Mac for what its intended!

Solved by Pondini, on another thread I opened...
    Answer:
    Sounds like either:
A directory problem on your internal HD.  Verify your internal HD, and Repair any other volumes being backed-up per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Something in OSX may be damaged.  You've tried the "combo," so a fresh copy of OSX (that won't disturb anything else) would be worth a try (and you don't need a tech for that).  See Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX.

  • I can't install Snow leopard on my hard disk which has 10.4.11 on and lots of space.

I can't install Snow leopard on my hard disk which has 10.4.11 on it and lots of space, I run the snow Leopard install disk and it says it cant be installed on my hard disk, which has 160 GB of space.

Which iMac? If it's a G5, the highest OS you can run is Leopard. Are you using the full retail copy of Snow, or a grey, machine specific disc from another computer? If it's the latter, that's the reason.

Is it possible to install Lion on the second hard disk on my Mini (2010) Snow Leopard Server, and switch between Lion and Snow Leopard? I like those voices Lion has in speech.

When baltwosaid NO emphatically, that was described as CORRECT ANSWER. Ditto in the caeses of the radically different answers from  Camelotand Matt Clifton
Could it be that CORRECT ANSWER needs better defining by Apple?
That apart, yes, switching might involve rebooting. About the voices, well, I was the other day adding voice to a commentary in a video I was working on. There's only American English accent in SL — Lion I believe has British ones as well.
Why not, I wondered, try to install Lion purely for academic interest, maybe with an SD card (Sandisk Ultra II, 16GB) as Tom Nelson says is possible at http://macs.about.com/od/macoperatingsystems/ss/Perform-A-Clean-Install-Of-Os-X- Lion-On-Your-Mac.htm

  • Install on a new PC after a hard disk failure on original install?

I lost the hard disk on my desktop, with Adobe X Pro installed (an update).  Purchased a new desktop, and installing my applications.  I can't access the failed hard disk, now only useful as a doorstop.  What are the correct steps to follow to get my license for X Pro up and running on the replacement desktop?

Did you get it installed? Do you have the license key? Did you make a backup DVD/CD of Acrobat? We have no clue where you are coming from. Adobe can help you with clearing the activation issue if that is the problem, but you need to have proof of purchase or such. You might see if you can log back in where you downloaded and see if you can get it again. It also helps if you have registered Acrobat.

  • New Mac user, addind hard disk drives - to raid 0 or not?

How should I set up my hard drives for best performance. I will backup data only to a large 4th drive in the enclosure, or externally.
Should I use Raid 0, or have my 2nd drive loaded with CS3 and other applications? Where would I install windows for Bootcamp? Scratch disk?
Lots of questions, can't wait to join the apple team!
    Thanks for your help!
    Todd

Get a faster boot drive and scratch disk. Use your slowest drive for data. And 4th for Windows.
I would not put Windows on my OS X boot drive.
Focus on having enough memory for CS3.
Leave all your applications with the system boot drive, too. No benefit.
    1: boot drive (750GB WD RE2 or SE16 $200)
    2. scratch - WD RE2 also.
RAID if you later find you work with huge files and already have 8GB RAM.
If you later want to RAID then plan ahead and get two identical RE2 series.
    3. Windows
    I would keep backup external.

  • HP Envy 17, Win 7 64 Bit - How do I re-install windows when the old hard disk has failed?

The laptop wont start up and the hard disk fails the diagnostic start-up tests. Restore doesn't work and taking the hard disk out the laptop & connecting to my desktop I can't access the recovery partition. The laptop is out of warranty.
I have a replacement disk drive but as I have no install disks and the recovery partition can't be accessed how do I reinstall the OEM win 7 on the new hard disk?
    Any help would be appreciated.

If the complete 25 character windows activation key is visible on the Microsoft Windows COA on your notebook, you can download an identical iso file from here and install Windows.
Download the drivers from the HP web support portal for your notebook. Put them on a usb flashdisk (thumbdrive) for ease of installation.
Use the Microsoft Windows  7 USD\DVD download tool and a 4GB usb flashdisk (thumbdrive) for the fastest and most reliable means of installing Windows.
This way you can have your laptop in a useable state while you wait for your ordered recovery disk set.
    Best regards,

  • Snow Leopard How to install User folder on another hard disk

I am going to install a new hard disk on my macpro.
I would like to have everything installed on my old hard disk but user folder installed on my new hard disk.
Is it possible ? No problems ?
    What´s necessary ?

Use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your entire home folder from the old HD to the new one. Then go to System Preferenes -> Accounts -> right-click your account -> Advanced options -> type the path to your new home folder in the Home directory field. If, for example, your new home folder is on the disk named "External", the path would be:
    /Volumes/External/yourusername

The ultimate way to install Windows 8.x in (U)EFI mode on Apple systems
This is what I've done a few minutes ago:
    1) pressed +alt button and this is my startup:
    - Mac SSD is the Osx Mavericks Disk
    - EFI boot (I don't know what it is but If i select it the Macbook boots into Max Osx just like the first option)
    - Recovery
    - EFI boot (ORANGE) Is the Windows 8.1 USB KEY created through Bootcamp Assistent.
    I've selected EFI Boot (ORANGE)
    The Windows 8.1 installation Begins...
I've selected the Unlocated Partition on TOSHIBA Hard Disk
Everything Seems to go in the right way but... at the End:
"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."

    mamdouh elchami,
which model MacBook Pro do you have? If I understand you correctly, you have already made a successful OS X Internet recovery to your internal disk, and now you would like to install Lion on an external disk. Was it Lion that you had successfully downloaded and installed to your internal disk?
