Installing new RAM in my iMac

I have a 20" iMac 5,1 with 1gb of RAM. I am looking to upgrade the RAM. According to the crucial.com scan on my computer...
Maximum Memory Capacity: 3072MB
Currently Installed Memory: 1GB
Available Memory Slots: 0
Total Memory Slots: 2
Dual Channel Support: No
CPU Manufacturer:
CPU Family: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz
CPU Speed: 2160 MHz
Maximum memory is reached by using one 2GB SODIMM and one 1GB SODIMM.
I was told at the apple store and by 1 other person that I can't install a 2gb and a 1gb, that they needed to match. Crucial says otherwise. So what's the verdict? Do I need to install two 2gb? or can I mix a 2gb and a 1gb. If I can mix them, does it matter which slot gets which RAM?

http://www.everymac.com/systems/by_capability/mac-specs-by-machine-model-machine -id.html
is a really good link if you have the x,x model number of the Model name.
According to it, Apple's specs actually call for a 3 GB memory addressing max, even if you put two 2 GB modules. Yes, you can apply a 1 GB and a 2 GB in place of the existing 512MB modules. It really won't matter if you get two 2 GB since the machine can't reliably address more in all instances. Best to stick with Apple's specs.
That specific model was one of the models between the fully addressing 2 GB and fully addressing 4 GB. So neither Apple store nor Crucial was entirely correct.

  • 4 hrs later - Computer shut down after installing new RAM (mid 2007 Imac)

Mid 2007 imac and I installed new Ram. It worked for 4 hrs then the Imac shutdown. The pressed power button but no power. Unplugged and replugged the power cord and 3 beeps sounded. I am wondering if it worked for 4 hrs or so, then why did it would it fail 4 hrs later?
I am running the correct ram because in system profiler under memory - it said that everything was ok.
    Any ideas?

or maybe the back tray wasn't tight enough?
I re-installed it now and so far so good.... I pressed tight and in an upwards motion. We'll see what happens

  • Installed new RAM now computer wont start up

I just installed 2GB of RAM in my iMac and removed the 512mb card it had originally.when i pressed the power button it beeps fast a few time then the fan starts working really fast. The screen doesnt turn on only the sleep light blinks as the fan runs. I replaced one of the new cards with the original 512mb card and it starts but when i check the memory the slot where the new 1GB card appears "empty" why could this be? did i install incorrectly?

When you install new RAM you have to push much harder than you think you should. You won't damage the RAM, but you have t give a mighty push to seat it, make sure you hear a click.

  • New Ram for my Imac doesn't seem to increase speed!

I just upgraded my Imac from 1 gig ram to 4 gig ram. I ordered the ram from Crucial. I took out the 1 gig of ram and installed the 4 gigs of new ram, and booted the computer back up. It now says that I have 4 gig of ram, however, I do not notice a noticeable improvement in speed. How can I make sure I don't have a defective module? Is there any thing else I need to do when installing new ram?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm not sure I totally agree with these responses, but I am admittedly no expert. I too increase my RAM from 1 gig to 2.5. I did this because I noticed a general sluggishness after installing Leopard. I figured the latest OS was hogging up some RAM, so I increased the RAM. I see no appreciable difference fter installing the extra 1.5 gigs. In the past, I have upgraded RAM on my many Macs and have always noticed a difference in the response time in Safari and other apps. What am I missing this time? If RAM won't do it, then what will? It seems absurd to me that a two year old iMac with 2.5 gigs of RAM should be sluggish.

  • Installing new HDD into an iMac G5 with SATA

Installing new HDD into an iMac G5 with SATA and would like to know how to migrate the old system over to the new drive. Can I use a USB2 external drive, move all the old data, then select the new system as the boot system?

    lwolfcc-
    Yes.
But you might do better with a program like SuperDuper, as it will be sure to copy any hidden files as well.

  • Installed new hard drive in imac and i get folder with question mark, put in OS install disk and it does nothing? All I have is wireless key board and mouse, is this a factor?

Installed new hard drive in imac and i get folder with question mark, put in OS install disk and it does nothing? All I have is wireless key board and mouse, is this an issue?

Other than put disc in you don't give much info about what you've done. With the install disc inserted restart your Mac while holding the C key, that should start it up from the install disc. Should also work fine with a wireless Apple keyboard.

  • Checking & installing new RAM

    Hi,
    I have a Pavilion dv7 product number VG420AV notebook with 4 GB DDR3 system memory (2 DIMM).
I am wanting to upgrade the memory to 8 GB.
Hp told me to buy a 4GB, 1600Mhz, PC3-12800 memory module (SHARED).
I am not sure if I need one stick or two.
How do I check to see if I have an avilable slot to install new RAM ,& how do I install new RAM in my notebook?
    Thanks fo the help.

That is a dv7t-3100 model. 2 ways to find out about the RAM. 1. Download and install CPU-Z and look at the memory tab; or, 2. Just pull the back cover off and look.
    Here is the Service Manual:
    Manual
    Page 4-17
And you do say you have 2 DIMM(s) which is all the slots available so to upgrade you are going to have to remove and replace existing memory.

  • Installed new ram, computer wont start up

I installed 1gb of hynix ram. I tried setting it in different ways, but each time when i start up the computer it doesnt even get to the chime sound, the screen doesnt come on, my fan just runs loud and fast and nothing happens, but it starts up fine with out the ram. is there any hope of installing this ram?

Generally if your computer won't start up after you have installed new RAM, either you have purchased the wrong type of RAM, or it is a bad module.
As long as you are able to start up normally after removing the new RAM, and it is supported, it might just be a bad module. Contact Hynix to arrange for a replacement.

  • Mac crashes regularly after installing new RAM

My laptop crashes at least once a day ever since installing new RAM. It seems to be triggered by quitting programs, usually Firefox, Logic or Spotify. There was nothing else connected to the Mac that brought about the latest crash but I do use an Mbox 2 on a regular basis.
Below is the last crash report and also the RAM profile. It's Kingston brand if that means anything.

It's almost impossible to trace back the panic report to a specific cause, but it's highly suspicious that you started experiencing problems after installing new RAM.
It's also strange that your RAM has no stated VendorID, Part Number or Serial Number.
I would return this memory poste haste.
Alternatively, if the DIMMs are from Kingston's ValueRAM range, just dump them in the garbage because that's where they belong. While you're there, look for any other RAM that someone else has thrown away - chances are its ValueRAM, too (hint: I have never seen a single ValueRAM DIMM work in any of my systems, so I avoid them like the plague - shame, since Kingston used to have such a good reputation).

  • Installed new Ram = 3 Beeps

Hello! I wanted to max out my iMac (7,1) with RAM so I bought a couple new chips from Other World Computing. It came yesterday and I went home all excited to install it. I did, and on startup all I get is three beeps repeating endlessly. I opened the slot back up and made sure they were seated well and they were. Same thing. Put the old RAM back in and it started fine. Gah! How disappointing and frustrating!
Here is the RAM I got:
    2GB PC5300 DDR2 667MHz 200 Pin SO-DIMM
    4GB PC5300 DDR2 667MHz 200 Pin SO-DIMM
Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Through an a separate email inquire with OWC, I got this response:
+The 3 beeps from your Mac indicate it doesn't see any memory. This is not uncommon as Apple's RAM is a slight bit thinner than third-party modules, and as such, our modules need an a bit extra pressure to fully seat them into their rather tight socket.+
+See if the modules can go another 1/8th inch (3mm) into the socket.+
I'm pretty sure I seated the new RAM properly, but I'll make sure to check that as well.

  • Installing New Ram...

    Hey all,
I am considering buying a 1gig stick of ram to take my iMac G5 up to 1.5 gig of ram to hopefully run WoW better with my tiny little radeon 9600...not the x600.
Anyways I was wondering how you install the ram in the computer. I have done it on a PC before and am assuming this is no different, but where the heck do I put it in?
Should I just have the mac people do it, lol it was simple enough for Pc's but who knows.
    Any directions/pictures to help?
    Thanks

Adding RAM can not slow you down, can only speed you up. If your iMac seems to bog down, run the Repair Permissions procedure first, second boot from Tiger install disc and run Repair Disk procedure, third boot from Apple Hardware Test and run extended test. It really shouldn't take all that to get it back up to its new speed, but those or one of them should definitely do the trick.
Yes, you will definitely notice the gaming improvement, might notice a web page improvement, will definitely improve downloads such as software updates, etc.

  • Newer Ram in older iMac

    Hi
Just about to buy 2x2GB for my iMac 24" 2.16 GHz (2006) and have the chance of getting some more recent Ram (2008) for a good price. Can someone please clarify that the newer ram should work.
I believe that the faster ram is backward compatible, but with no speed advantage as such.
    Recommended:DDR2 PC2-5300,667MHz,200pin sodimm
    Alternative:DDR2,PC2-6400,800MHz,200-pin sodimm
    Many Thanks
    Duncan

I've heard that 3.2/3.3 number many times, but no one I know of has been able to provide proof that it actually happens. If the Mac really does attain access to more than 3.0 GB of RAM, where is this indicated. Activity Monitor should show 3.0 GB when 4GB is installed. It almost seems like an +urban myth+ for these last white iMacs. As if some person found that the type of Core 2 Duo processor used technically should have access to about 3.3GB of RAM, so wrote about it in some article or blog, and everyone else has been repeating it over and over again, until it was accepted as fact; I've repeated it myself. I think the real-world max is actually 3.0 GB, as implemented by Apple in either the hardware architecture or in Mac OS X.
But if anyone can tell me how to demonstrate that a white Core 2 Duo iMac with 2x2GB RAM has access to 3.3GB of RAM, I would really appreciate knowing how to do it.
And RAM is actually significantly more expensive than it was a few months ago. A pair of 2GB modules cost around $60 before, but now its about $100.

  • Problems installing new RAM

    Hi guys,
I have a 17" G5 imac (built in isight) i recently bought a 2gb RAM chip for it. I have tried to carefully follow the instructions to install it, but the chip does not seem to "click" into place as suggested in the manual and if i close the machine up again the new RAM is not recegnised. So, my question is, am i being too gentle with the chip? or is there some special trick to this? i installed ram on my macbook easy enough before however this attempt is proving difficult. anysuggestions would be really appreciated.
    thanks

You really need to force the stick in, I use both thumbs and push like mad!

  • Help! Installed new RAM and now screen isn't coming on!

    Hi
I'm in a bit of a mess and would be grateful for any help with this one:
I have a Powerbook G3 500mhz Pismo that currently has a 512mb card in the top slot (Kingston PB100/512) that I installed about two years ago with no problems and an original 128mb in the bottom. At Christmas I bought another 512mb for the bottom slot – (Kingston KTA-PBG4/512 - This one is smaller than the first but it was the one reccomended by Kingston on their website for the Pismo).
I have just got round to installing it after backing up my system and I have good instructions on how to do it (I have replaced the HD two years previous with no problems)
Firstly I have to mention that just before I changed the RAM the laptop fell from a small stool (about 1.5feet high) onto carpet due to the unbalancing effect of taking out the battery/CD ROM. It landed on its edge where the power socket is. I immediately put it back together and turned it on to make sure it was ok - it came on fine and there were no problems visually, mechanically or otherwise, so I carried on with the installation.
I installed the new 512mb card in the bottom slot and re-assembled but when I turned it on the screen remained black! From the computer itself, however, it sounded as if it had started up ok – there was the chime and the familiar sound of the hard drive at start up.
To troubleshoot I removed the new RAM card and put back the old RAM as it was – this made no difference. I checked to see if the processor board was firmly in place or if I had dislodged any connectors by mistake within the area that I had worked but this made no difference. I also tried to re-set the parameter RAM and this made no difference.
Because the laptop took a small knock prior to installation, I am not sure if that has caused something to come loose or damage of some kind but as I mentioned I did test it immediately and it worked, so it’s either a delayed reaction or the new RAM card has caused it. – (As mentioned there is a difference between the two 512 cards in both name and size but the smaller size of the newer one I assume just reflects advancement in technology and it was reccomended by Kingston!)
If anybody has any advice on this I would be very grateful (and also, if anybody can point me in the direction of instructions on how to take the pismo apart to get to the connections to the screen that would be great – in case I have to do it)
    Many Thanks Barry
    PowerBook G3500mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    SpottyFox,
It sounds like you are properly seating the CPU card from your description, so I don't believe that is your problem. I am glad you checked the pins (I should have mentioned that as the next step if the reseating did not help). I cannot answer whether anything was damaged from your description of the pins; I have read where others have realigned bent pins with success so maybe your mileage will vary.
Start up your Pismo, then shine a flashlight directly into the display; if you can see data being written to the display, just the backlight is refusing to light. If this is the case, check the inverter board connections. The inverter is under the clutch cover and powers the fluorescent backlight in the display. Enlarge the bottom picture in this link to see the inverter:

Check connections at each end of the inverter. Disassembly is not as extensive as this guide suggests. Support the back of the display, then remove the main battery, optical drive, lay the keyboard on its face on the palm rest, heat shield, and clutch cover...that's it.

You might also connect the Pismo to an external display; failure here would suggest a more serious problem.
