Installing new ram into macbook

Hello, I recently bought 2 pieces(sticks?) of ram with the following specifications: 4GB total (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-5300 that claims to be compatible with 667, 5333 and 400 MHz. This ram replaced the ram that is currently in my macbook: 2GB total (2x1GB) 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Everything fit just fine and I pressed the ram in and continued adding pressure until I was sure the ram couldn't go in anymore. It all seemed fine until I tried turning on the macbook which lit up the small white light on the side, but the screen remained black. The keyboard and mouse don't seem to do anything, but when I plugged in the power source, the light turned green as if the computer was fine. Did I buy the wrong ram or is there something else going on? After putting the original ram back in, the computer works just fine. If I bought the wrong ram can someone let me know what ram I should buy? I'd like to get more than 2GB in this thing. Really any information will help, thanks! I believe I have a late 2008 (maybe early 2009) white macbook, if that helps.

You've most likely got RAM that was made for PCs. The PC5300 that is for them is usually tested at up to 675mhz so it can be compatable with PC5400 & 5333 machines. MacBooks are really finicky about RAM. They need sticks that are PC5300 667mhz only. (The RAM actually runs at 666mhz but like the 13 floor on a building they were worried about superstition.)
When you put one of your old RAM in with a new one the old one forces the new one to run at 667mhz. That's why it will work.
Your best bet is buy RAM that is made for MacBooks from a Mac friendly source. OWC is a good one http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/

  • Installed 8GB Ram into Macbook Pro, System Report says it only has 2GB RAM

I decided to upgrade my 13.3 inch MacBook Pro from 4GB Ram to 8GB Ram.
I purchased two Crucial 4GB Ram from two different dealers on Amazon and installed them myself.
I turned my MacBook on and now it says that only one slot is being used and that it is a 2GB.
I have a feeling that either one of the Ram slots has failed, however it still puzzles me that it says that 2GB of RAM is installed? Is there any way of refreshing the 'About This Mac' or is there anything to make the Mac recogise this problem?
    Thanks in advance

open the mac back up and make sure both ram modules are seated properly.  It takes a little hard push to get them seated and you will hear a click/snap when they are seated.  To determine if a ram slot has failed, simply put back in the old ram, and if both slots are recognized, the problem is with the new ram.

  • After installing new RAM module macbook will not wake without re-start

Im having a little problem with my macbook. It operates normally and the new RAM appears to function as normal except when the computer is in sleep mode, it appears to sleep as normal but when the lid is raised or the power button depressed to wake the system up it will not do so without a full re-start. Any help is much appreciated. I have tried re-setting the PRAM and performing the usual maintenance functions from OnyX.
    Thank you.

Did replacing the RAM fix the problem? I am also experiencing the same issue. The RAM works great when the computer is running but occasionally I cannot get the computer out of sleep mode and must reset the entire machine. Is the only cause of this a bad stick of RAM?

  • Installing New Hardrive into Macbook Pro 13" and can't boot

I have installed a new 500Gb 5400rpm drive into my macbook pro 13. Before I swapped the drives I used time machine to back-up onto my Lacie drive. Now the new drive is in. I turned on the computer, pressed the option button and nothing came up. I have now put my old HD into an enclosure and booted up from that drive. I copied my whole hd over to the new drive once it was formatted and tried to boot but this didn't work. I thought once I had the time machine back-up on a drive I would be able to press option when I turn on the computer and then that would workj. I don't have my OSX 10.6.8disk so am now just booting up off my old hd which is pointless. Can anyone help as I am losing my mind.

What happens when you install the original HDD in the MBP?  If it does not boot , the connecting cable may be faulty.
    Ciao.

  • HT1270 does installing aftermarket RAM into new macbook pro non-retina void apple warranty

does installing aftermarket RAM into new macbook pro non-retina void apple warranty

Only for the RAM which should be covered by the manufacturers/vendors warranty.  Now if you damage the MBP while installing the RAM then you may find yourself voiding the MBP warranty.  But ir does take a lot to do that.
    Ciao.

  • Installing additional RAM into hp s5150t

I have a quad core s5150. I recently tried to add two additional RAM modules. I verified that I had purchased the correct RAM on curcial.com and by speaking with their reps. The computer would not take the RAM in any configuration. We tried seating the new RAM into the old modules one at a time and it still would not work. At last, the crucial rep told me to try and update the BIOS. Hard as I tried, for three hours, I was unable to find the BIOS update on the HP website despite looking where the HP video told me to look. There were lots of update options but no BIOS heading. The auto detect tool could not identify my computer for some reason. The HP Update tool installed with the machine said no updates were available.
I am wondering a few things, 1) Where can I find the BIOS update on the HP site? It is not in the list of updates on this page, where it is supposed to be:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=4002...
    2. Is it possible there is a problem or conflict beacuse the machine shipped with Windows Vista and I updated it to Windows 7? Looking in the BIOS, the last update was May of 2009, long befoe Windows 7 was updated from the old VISTA files.
    3. Any other reason you might know for the modules to not be working? We exchagned them for a fresh set already and still the same problem. They are clicking into place. Not sure what to try.

Thanks for your support, Jaco. I appreciate your input.

  • Installing new ram memory

    Hello All,
I have recently installed a new ram into my mac. I installed a 2GB ram and put it into the right slot. I left the memory in the left slot there. Everything seems to be running fine (and faster) however everytime I close the lid to my mac and reopen it, the whole computer starts up as if I have shut it down. I never shut it down though. Can someone tell me if I did something wrong and if I can fix it?
    Thank you so much!

As for your last two question I don't really understand them...
    OK.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
2nd one, since you have a Laptop, I was wondering if it was running off the Battery or plugged into AC with the charger?

  • Installed new RAM now computer wont start up

I just installed 2GB of RAM in my iMac and removed the 512mb card it had originally.when i pressed the power button it beeps fast a few time then the fan starts working really fast. The screen doesnt turn on only the sleep light blinks as the fan runs. I replaced one of the new cards with the original 512mb card and it starts but when i check the memory the slot where the new 1GB card appears "empty" why could this be? did i install incorrectly?

When you install new RAM you have to push much harder than you think you should. You won't damage the RAM, but you have t give a mighty push to seat it, make sure you hear a click.

  • Installing 8GB ram on MacBook Pro (Mid 2010)

Hi, I have bought 8GB(2*4GB) ram to install on my macbook pro, when I install both I get a black screen but when installing one or the other with one of the original ram they both work. What can I do to fix this problem??

When you install RAM, reboot your computer with the "D" key held down (or the Option-D keys). These will load the Apple Hardware Tests.
With these tests open, check the box for the extended memory test, and then start the test. This will have the system thoroughly test the RAM for errors.
In your case, it appears you may have a bad set of RAM modules, but you can check them using the method above.
When you have them paired with your original RAM, how much memory does the system report as being available when you select About This Mac in the Apple menu? If you are using Lion or Mountain Lion, then in this panel click "More Info" and then select the "Memory" section, and see what the system reports as being installed.
Is this RAM test necessay with every upgrade of memory or just if you have problems after the upgrade
    Thanks

  • Installing new HDD into an iMac G5 with SATA

Installing new HDD into an iMac G5 with SATA and would like to know how to migrate the old system over to the new drive. Can I use a USB2 external drive, move all the old data, then select the new system as the boot system?

    lwolfcc-
    Yes.
But you might do better with a program like SuperDuper, as it will be sure to copy any hidden files as well.

  • 4 hrs later - Computer shut down after installing new RAM (mid 2007 Imac)

Mid 2007 imac and I installed new Ram. It worked for 4 hrs then the Imac shutdown. The pressed power button but no power. Unplugged and replugged the power cord and 3 beeps sounded. I am wondering if it worked for 4 hrs or so, then why did it would it fail 4 hrs later?
I am running the correct ram because in system profiler under memory - it said that everything was ok.
    Any ideas?

or maybe the back tray wasn't tight enough?
I re-installed it now and so far so good.... I pressed tight and in an upwards motion. We'll see what happens

  • Checking & installing new RAM

    Hi,
    I have a Pavilion dv7 product number VG420AV notebook with 4 GB DDR3 system memory (2 DIMM).
I am wanting to upgrade the memory to 8 GB.
Hp told me to buy a 4GB, 1600Mhz, PC3-12800 memory module (SHARED).
I am not sure if I need one stick or two.
How do I check to see if I have an avilable slot to install new RAM ,& how do I install new RAM in my notebook?
    Thanks fo the help.

That is a dv7t-3100 model. 2 ways to find out about the RAM. 1. Download and install CPU-Z and look at the memory tab; or, 2. Just pull the back cover off and look.
    Here is the Service Manual:
    Manual
    Page 4-17
And you do say you have 2 DIMM(s) which is all the slots available so to upgrade you are going to have to remove and replace existing memory.
If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

  • Installed new ram, computer wont start up

I installed 1gb of hynix ram. I tried setting it in different ways, but each time when i start up the computer it doesnt even get to the chime sound, the screen doesnt come on, my fan just runs loud and fast and nothing happens, but it starts up fine with out the ram. is there any hope of installing this ram?

Generally if your computer won't start up after you have installed new RAM, either you have purchased the wrong type of RAM, or it is a bad module.
As long as you are able to start up normally after removing the new RAM, and it is supported, it might just be a bad module. Contact Hynix to arrange for a replacement.

  • Mac crashes regularly after installing new RAM

My laptop crashes at least once a day ever since installing new RAM. It seems to be triggered by quitting programs, usually Firefox, Logic or Spotify. There was nothing else connected to the Mac that brought about the latest crash but I do use an Mbox 2 on a regular basis.
Below is the last crash report and also the RAM profile. It's Kingston brand if that means anything.

It's almost impossible to trace back the panic report to a specific cause, but it's highly suspicious that you started experiencing problems after installing new RAM.
It's also strange that your RAM has no stated VendorID, Part Number or Serial Number.
I would return this memory poste haste.
Alternatively, if the DIMMs are from Kingston's ValueRAM range, just dump them in the garbage because that's where they belong. While you're there, look for any other RAM that someone else has thrown away - chances are its ValueRAM, too (hint: I have never seen a single ValueRAM DIMM work in any of my systems, so I avoid them like the plague - shame, since Kingston used to have such a good reputation).
