Installing new server - moving windows machines

I have purchased a new Intel Xserve which is going to replace our current production G5 system.
Our current machine is running DNS, OD and is a PDC.
I will be building the new machine from new and will transfer all the data from the current to the new machine
I have a good number of Windows users who are connected to the current system and who are using local profiles on their systems.
I have been running some testing prior to the move and have the following questions?
When I move a windows machine from one server to another. The windows machine has to be removed from the PDC of one server and added to the PDC of the new.
The windows machine effectively gets a new system ID from the new server.
This in turn causes me to copy the users windows "profile" and copy it back once the windows system has been joined to the new PDC.
How can I avoid doing this?
How can I make the windows machine continue without any changes and make it think it is still connected to the original server??

Hi
You should be able to do this by editing the records directly in Workgroup Manager. Enable the 'show all tabs and Inspector' option under the WGM Menu. You should now notice a new icon appear by the side of the Computer List, it will look a bit like a bullseye. Select this and select from the list of Records below. You should be able to edit the SID for Users or for the Group that the Users belong to.
Hope this helps, Tony

  • Change the hostname after Database move to new server in Windows

We are moving database from one server to new server on Windows running 9.2.0.6. Temporarily the new server is named as XYZ after the database is moved. We want to change the servername to ABC , what changes is required ??
I think only tnsnames and listener.ora is required to be changed. Is anything else need to be changed for Intellligent Agent to work properly ??? Nothing in Registry I believe ???
    Thanks
    Atul

nothing to change in registry.Just stop the database and services and restart after renaming and rebooting.
change the client tnsnames too if host name is specified.

    Hello,
This error generally points out to fact that account which you are using is not able to start database engine after installation or in between. There can be quite few reasons for that.I would like you to paste log file for failed installation using below
    link
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143702.aspx
Please make sure all previous failed installations are removed completely.
If possible create a new ID add it into local windows administrator and then try installation with that ID.Or you can login in windows with that ID .Go to setup files RK on Set.up.exe and select run as administrator

  • Installing Forms Server on Windows 2000

We installed Forms Server 6i on Windows 2000. We completed the installation successfully. When we clicked on the 'Run the Form on the Web.', it gives 'This page cannot be displayed.' error. We tried this twice, but getting same error.
    Any suggestions/help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    VL.

Do you have your web server installed too?
forms server works in conjunction with your web server.
Make sure you have done the following...
Web server is listening on port 80
Forms server is running in HTTP mode. ( You may need to stop and restart the forms service in win2000 if you change this from socket in the registry )
You must also set up your virtual directorys on your web server. I used the microsoft internet information server that comes with win2000. It's an add on component on the disk. Oracle would suggest you use Oracle 9i application server ( Which is rebadged Apache )
Forms server is running on port 9000. Also set in the registry.
You also edit the in the formsweb.cfg file in <ORACLE_HOME>\forms60\server
Make sure HTTP mode is set in this too. You can also change various params such as the applet size etc. I would recommend the Oracle look and feel and run in separate windows options.
All the forms tester does is run a bit of cgi which will dynamically change the base HTML file in <ORACLE_HOME>\forms60\sever.
You will notice there is one file which is baseie and basejint. The cgi will choose to use the one depending on if you choose to use jinitiator or ie50=native.
When you go live can maually edit these files depending on what java viutual machine you choose. You can place this file in your web site root as defaut.htm or whatever you want and it will serve you app without using the cgi html generator.
Sorry if parts of this you know but it took me weeks of work to set this up. The Oracle documentation is not very well put together.
I have read nearly every line of the damn stuff.
Please e-mail me if you have any queries as I may have not made sense in places.

  • Connecting to sql server database mdf file without installing sql server on client machine?

I am creating a window application that need to use sql server database. I want to install this application to client machine without installing sql server so that my application can still connect to a database i.e mdf file that i will be providing at client
    system.
How can i connect to a database(mdf) on client machine through my window application without installing sql server. ? I dont know is it possible or not.
If possible what will be the connection string in that case. Database need not be used in network.

you cant connect and view the internals of mdf file unless it being attached to a sql server instance as a database.
The sql server instance can be installed in any box which is in the same domain and then you can connect from your application to it.

  • OS X Snow Leopard Server and Windows Machines

Hello! My wife's company is using Windows on a network. Is it possible to use a Mac server to control these? They will be eventually switching over, but are stuck with windows for the time being. We are hoping not to have to buy a windows server because they will be switching to Mac anyways. Am I making any sense?

Not a ton But to answer what I believe is your question. OS X Server can run as a Primary Domain Controller. This is not the same as an Active Directory domain controller. However, for many environments running pre Windows 7, this means that OS X Server can act as the sole directory container and all workstations (Windows, Mac, many flavors of Linux) can be bound into the OS X Server for single directory management. By the way, the community appears to have found a way to join Win 7 systems as well.
However, the easiest way of doing this may be to keep your Windows servers and move to Mac clients. Some of the questions that you need to be asking is will OS X Server be able to replace all the features currently in use on the Windows machine? How are you accounting for groupware, backup, disaster recovery, etc? Have you evaluated all of your software needs? Have you looking into physical security and data protection?
The rage is to go Mac. But it is not a panacea. Mac systems require the same amount of thought and consideration in design that a Windows environment does. Do you generally have fewer issues with Macs... sure. But don't think that everything will just magically work because there is an Apple logo on it.

"The path C:\Users\****\App Data\Local\Apple\Apple Software Update\iTunes64.msi" cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'iTunes64.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product iTunes"
    And then this one:
"Errors occurred while installing the updates. If the problem persists, choose Tools > Download Only and try installing manually."
When I use Download Only and try to install manually as suggested, I get this message:
"The older version of iTunes cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group."
Can anyone please help me resolve this?

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Is it possible to find the creation date of a CD/DVD burned on Mac OS 8.6 either on newer mac or Windows machine?

I am cataloguing lot of my old music and data cds/dvds. Some of these were created on my old Mac (OS 8.6). I was wondering if there was a way to check the metadata on these discs on my current Windows machine or on a Mac that I have at work to get this information. When I pop the CD and DVDs into the windows machine the dates that show up in the explorer window are actually older than the burn. I assume this is the CD creation date and not the burn date. It's not a huge deal, but it would help me delve deeper into nerd-dom!

One approach would be to have access to a Mac that can run the classic environment or has a pre OS X native installation. These should be able to read the files for dates of creation/modification. There is also SheepShaver that runs on OS X machines.
