Installing nvidia over ati

Hi Folks
just a quick question, I'v bought a new 6600 nvidia card and am about to install, would it be best to uninstall the old ati drivers before installing the new card or can I install over the top. tia Hazzo

Yeah, thanks Richard, I was trying to catch you but you had just logged off, around 4.00am your time it said. I did completely remove all drivers for the ati card, now I just have to suss how to use the vidia one properly. H

  • BootCamp trying to install Nvidia drivers on 2011 MacBook

    Hi all,
I had BootCamp installed on my MacBook5,1 and moved the hard drive over to my new MacBookPro8,1. Uninstalled BootCamp and tried to reinstall with the newest BootCamp drives included with the MacBook Pro. Here's where the problem starts:
After starting the BootCamp install, an Nvidia display driver installer immediately comes up. It never does anything, and, as far as Task Manager can tell, isn't doing anything. My guess is this is because the MacBookPro has an Intel display adapter, not Nvidia. But I'm not sure why Nvidia is even coming up. Perhaps because I used to have an Nvidia driver when it was in the old computer?
    Thank you for any suggestions.

I am not sure you can use Nvidia or ATI directly, that you need to use laptop2go modded drivers instead.
Normally, you uninstall and delete the old graphic driver, reboot in safe mode, use Driver Sweeper to uninstall, and delete the driver which should be at the top level of "C:" as \Nvidia\....
Don't use the 180.xx if you have Nvidia either, stick with 178.xx I think, but check laptop2go forums.

  • Installed Nvidia Driver Problems?

I recently installed Nvidia Ge-Force 5200FX Driver onto my computer and it changes my video bit from 16-Bit to 4-Bit and i cant change back anyone know how i can change it back without uninstalling the driver.

There is one thing you do not seem to have understood so far:  This forum is not a general hardware forum but offers help and advice for MSI Retail products only.  You were using an MSI MS-6590 KT6 Delta mainboard in your other thread.  That is the only reason why we replied to your questions about an unknown video card model in the first place (even though the lack of a video driver for an unknow card has not much to do with your mainboard.
Now you are asking us about some NVIDIA driver issue regarding the "same type of [non-MSI] graphics card" but in a "different computer".  You provided no useful information about your system configuration whatsoever (no information about your operating system, no information about the exact driver version, no information about why you installed an NVIDIA driver even though the unknow video card seems to be an old ATI model, etc.)  I see nothing that relates to any MSI Retail product in the context of your driver question.  I am locking this topic.
If you find one reason why I should re-open your topic and not advise you to look for help in a general hardware forum (there are tons of those out there on the net) write me a PM and tell me what this has to do with MSI Retail products.  I will than gladly unlock this thread.  Until then:

  • Upgrade MacPro1,1 with ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB and Open GL 1.7.7. to recommended system requirements for heli simulator: OpenGL Version 2.1 compatible 3D-graphics card from NVIDIA or ATI with 512MB.

I want to install a helicopter simulator into my MacPro1,1 with ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB and Open GL 1.7.7. Recommended system requirements for the heli simulator are: OpenGL Version 2.1 compatible 3D-graphics card from NVIDIA or ATI with 512MB (at least as fast as NVIDIA 8600, 9400 or ATI Radeon HD 2400). Is there such a graphics card available that will work in my Mac Pro?

Are you really still running 10.6.3? you will need 10.6.5+ so do that and make a clone.
ATI 5770 from Apple Store - like 1000s of others have done and in the comments section on the store page.

  • Used G5--  NVIDIA or ATI?

I'm in the market for a used G5, I see some that come with NVIDIA cards, others with ATI +(for example NVIDIA GeForce 6600 or ATI Radeon 9600 Pro)+.
This machine will use FCP and sometimes Motion, is there an appreciable difference between the different card manufacturers that should cause me to look for one over another?

    Hi Wes,
they are both recommended by Apple.
Inevitably we (us, forum members) tend to base our answers on what we have experience with and/or prefer most.
In my experience over the last few years I have been pleased with both Nvidia and ATI cards with all my computers, however, the ATI card on my MacPro (see my profile) has been particularly powerful and consistent and I could notice some remarkable performance.
Ati and Apple have been sharing a rather good business relationship so far and I would imagine that the former' technical support is particularly aware of the latter's machines and systems "engines".

Looks like you can choose from :
-contact the maintainer to see if you can help with getting it to work with kernel 3.16
    - downgrade the kernel
    - switch to nouveau
Note that there are comments on the aur page that state nvidia-173xx doesn't work with xorg 1.16, so you may have to downgrade more then just the kernel.

Can you switch to another terminal with Alt-Ctrl-F2? Please check the logs and systemd's journal.
Did you install nvidia or nvidia-lts?

  • OS X wouldn't install after accidentally installing Windows over it

My sister attempted to install Windows XP on her Macbook Pro using boot camp but some how accidentally installed Windows over OS X. I used Disk Utility to erase the drive and reformat it back to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" but I get the following error when trying to install OS X:
    +"Install Failed+
+Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer+
+The Installer cannot prepare the volume for installation. You may need to prepare your disk using Disk Utility.+
+Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again."+
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a problem setting or hardware wise?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
In addition to formatting, you need to be sure the disk is partitioned GUID for an Intel machine.
Boot into Leopard DVD and run disk utility again and repartition it and format it at the same time. Because of the bootcamp issue, you might be better making two partitions first and then making one to be sure that the entire disk has a single GUID/HFS+ partition/format scheme.

  • Not Able To Install Nvidia Graphics Drivers

    Hello all!
This past week I just finished putting my new system together with a K8N Diamond Plus. Only major problem right now is i am not able to install Nvidia's drivers. Below are my components...
    XP 64-Bit Edition
    MSI K8N Diamond Plus
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
    BFG 7900 GTX 512MB
    1 Gig Coirsar Ram
2 Wester digital HD in Raid 0
When I try and install the graphics drivers i get the message " The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."
I used the chip set drivers listed here: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=710&kind=1
Also I have tried the ones from NVIDIA's site: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_winxp64_x16_6.83
The graphics drivers i used are from NVIDIA's site: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp64_81.98.html
BFG Tech support guy had me look under display adapters in device manager. It only has Standard VGA Graphics Adapter listed. He said I did not have my chip set drivers installed (though i have), or the motherboard was not recognizing it. Also he said they do not support XP-64 and would not offer me any more support so long as i run it.
I just can not believe that XP 64, 7900 GTX, and this great K8N Diamond Plus can not get along.
Any advice anyone has for getting my Diamond Plus and my graphics card to jive together would be greatly appricated.
    Thankyou all!!

Thankyou guys for the responses. I was able to find drivers that worked with my card here..
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/index.php?drivers&series=80&os=2&type=1&dir=1
Now my only current issue left is that I have no sound. It is enabled in the BIOS, installed the 64-bit drivers from MSI site, tired installing drivers off disk. Any suggestion?

  • Installing tiger over os 10.0.2 and os 9.2

i'm really confused about this because i have had several different opinions about what will happen to my existing os's when i install tiger. to make sure i've been told correctly before i screw something up. the thing is, i need to keep os 9 on my computer because all of my graphic programs work with it (illust. photoshop, etc.) if i install tiger over this, will i not be able to use os 9, or switch to it in the start up disk and reboot?
is it true that i can't use the 'upgrade' feature because it only works with os 10.2 and up? would this be the safest option for me, so should i purchase the 10.2 upgrade and install the tiger upgrade from there? if so, where can i find the 10.2 upgrade?
re: archive and install feature...would i need at least the 10.2 operating system, too? if it archives your older os, can you ever reboot in an older os? if not, can you easily access the older os 9 to use the graphics files? any known complications of reading older files created in os 9 after the install of tiger?
sorry to sound so stupid about these things, but i'm a designer and therefore technically challenged! thanks for your help!

    artsenthusiast1:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You are correct in that Archive and Install is only available for OS X 10.2 and later.
To install Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger.
You will also need to purchase the Full Retail version of Tiger.
Be aware that Computer specific or upgrade versions should be avoided as they can cause problems. Besides, it may be a violation of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...
This is how I would go about accomplishing what you want to do:
    1. I would backup my entire HDD to an external FireWire Hard Disk Drive.
    2. Then I would completely wipe the HDD and reinstall beginning with OS 9 then Tiger.
    3. Then I would move back my data and third party apps from my backup.
Please post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Installing 9 over 8: how to remove 8

I installed 9 over 8 and now I have both versions on my Mac. I called Apple to ask how to remove 8, since it's taking up room.
They said, assuming that you didn't change ANY default folders when you installed 8 and 9, then simply throw away version 8 icons for Logic Pro, Logic Node and MainStage from the Applications folder. Don't throw any other things away from any other folders, as Logic 9 has overwritten the original files in those folders.
    Easy.

Yes, as has been said in many threads here already, if you don't want to run the old versions, just delete the old application bundles.
However, it makes sense to keep them (for a while at least), in case you get an oddities showing up and need to revert to the previous version. It's not like they take up a huge amount of disk space...
