Installing older mac`os version

I would like to install 10.4.6 but have 10.4.8. runnig now. If I use my Macos 10.4.6 software CD a message states that a newer MacOs version is detected and that I will lose all data on the drive if I wish to install. Can't I re-install 10.4.6 without losing my data, other than the MacOs 10.4.8 data?

While you can try to do it with an archive and install, ignoring Apple's warnings, you may end up with applications or drivers designed for 10.4.7 or 10.4.8 that won't work on 10.4.6. My suggestion is to get an external Firewire drive large enough to clone your existing drive to one partition, and make at least 10 GB on another partition to keep behind the older operating system for whatever you find does not work on 10.4.8. In the future when upgrading, follow my upgrade FAQ so you won't find yourself in such a conundrum:

It includes a backup FAQ link that explains options for lcloning.

Do you have the original gray system disks that came with the computer, or a full retail install disk set for 10.5? If so, you can use a utiltiy:

to extract just Image Capture from the disk and install it. Otherwise, you  would have to reinstall the entire OS

  • Unmounting RAID or Partitioning to install older Mac version

I recently bought a used G5 running 10.5. It has two hard drives that are set-up in a RAID 1 config. I need to be able to run both 10.5 and a previous version on the computer. I assumed I could split the RAID and use one hard drive for each version. But here's my problem
I've tried to delete the RAID using the Disk Utility, but the computer won't let me. It says it can't unmount the HDs. There is a little "lock" symbol next to the combined hard drive, but I don't know how to get rid of it. I am logged in as an admin. How can I separate the HDs?
Would it be better to partition the two drives? How do I do that with two HDs listed in the Disk Utility?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me crazy!

You would have to open it up to find out what's inside. Since this is a used machine it's either that or find out from the original owner.
You can (or should) be able to use Disk Utility to erase the RAID volume then install OS X onto it if that's what you want to do. I don't know which G5 model you have, but the last ones made required 10.4.2, so you would need 10.4.3 or later on your installer DVD if you have one of the last models. Open System Profiler and look at the Model ID. If it's 11,2 then that's the last model produced. If it's 7,2 then it's the previous model, and that one came with 10.4, so you would need a retail 10.4.1 or later for it. All previous models came with 10.3.x or earlier.
My only misgiving about this is that it's not a good idea to install OS X on a RAID array. But others have done it before.

  • Trying to install older mac game on new imac\

As a preface, I am new to the mac world. Just bought my first mac a month ago.
I recently bought a game that is supposed to be specifically for running on a mac, but it's an older game. My system meets all of the minimum requirements printed on the game box, but when I loaded the cd into the computer and tried to start the application, I got a message saying the game wasn't supported by my system. How can I get the game to work? Is it different with macs that you can't run older versions of programs on newer operating systems? On a pc you can run older programs on xp and vista. Any help is appreciated.
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You might be able to run the game with SheepShaver, if it really is a game that needs Classic. See if you can find a non-Intel Mac to try the game, to see if it does work with Classic. SheepShaver is not trivial to inyall, so you don't want to bother if the game doesn't work with Classic. See:

    Hi,
I just ran the advised command. This was the result at the terminal:

I'm afraid that "permission denied" means that the command was not accepted. Something wrong with the Terminal?
However, I tried to reinstall PE9. Result was negative giving the following errors:

  • HT1338 Older Mac running Tiger 10.4.11. and Flash no longer works. Upgraded version installed and left me without any Flash support at all??

I recently attempted to upload the latest FLASH PLAYER. My older Mac (G4) works wonderfully as a desktop computer, so I NEED a flash player
badly, but now it says that Adobe no longer supports older Mac Power PCs! What's up with that?? Some of the best and most desirable computers
ever made are of no interest to Adobe?
I there a work-around to eliminate the need for Adobe's Flash Player?? Another Flash version......can you say Macromedia? HELP

You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version,10.3.183.23 or later, is for Intel Macs only running Tiger or Leopard, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Version 11.4.402.265 is for Snow Leopard onwards.
    * Unhelpfully, if you want the last version for PPC Macs, you need to go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html  and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
(If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, contributor Texas Mac Man suggests the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the latest version:)
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.
But possibly that only works with Leopard.

Some MacBook Pro versions cannot be upgraded past 10.6.8; others are maxed out at 10.7.5. newer models can go all the way to 10.10. So it is important to know exactly what version you have--there may be close to 40 variants produced since the MB made its debut in 2006.
You can safely give us a snapshot of your model and its current config that will allow us to deternmmine your model and its upgrade potential, plus show it you have any software that may impede any upgrades. Please download and install this free utility:

Run the program and click the "Copy report to clipboard" button when it displays the results. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance.
Remember that, on leaving OS10.6.8, you lose the ability to run older softare written for older PowerPC Macs (yours in Intel-based). Programs such as Office 2004 will no longer work (min of Office 2008 needed to work on newer OS versions), and AppleWorks will stop working completely

Each time I connect my iphone to my MAC I get a message that there is a newer version of iPhoto, but when I select the link, I am taken to the Apple webpage and get a message that the page I'm looking for is not available. The iPhoto version that is currently available at the App Store os 9.5.1 and requires the Mavericks OS X.  The early 2008 24" iMac can run Mavericks.  Once you have Mavericks installed (it's free)  you can purchase iPhoto 9.5.1 from the App Store.
If you don't want to upgrade to Mavericks you can purchase a copy of the iLife 11 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com and install iPhoto 9.  Then up trade it to 9.4.3 via the updaters at the  Apple Downloads website: Apple - Support - Search

  • Installing Mac OS version 10.0.4 for a Power Mac G4

Wondering if anyone can help me, I spent all day trying to reinstall the Mac OS version 10.0.4 software that came with the computer in the first place. Decided we needed to restore our Power Mac G4 to its original state. I know, its 8 years old! LOL. I erased the HD and used all 4 restoring CD's. Came up at the end saying that the restore couldn't be completed cause it could not restore a "restricted-image". We ignored that and just moved on and installed the Mac OS 9.2 software- which seems to work. Then when we tried to install the Mac OS 10.0.4 software installer CD, the small little happy face computer came up on screen and so did that darn spinning ball! Then the ball froze and stopped spinning and we couldn't install the Mac OS 10.0.4 software CD at all. I don't know how many times we tried it. But it did it every time! So I tried to skip that and go directly to installing the Mac OS X 10.4. But the computer kept ejecting it every single time! It just wouldn't take it.
Someone please help! I'm going crazy with this thing!
    Sincerely frustrated!

Be sure the computer shipped with those discs, & before attempting again
to install anything, use the disk tools in OS 9 and have then erase the
whole hard disk drive, and then reformat it. Nothing should be on the drive.
Then use the OS 9 installer, be sure to install OS 9 Drivers as part of the
installation, so you will have a running system. If there are any options,
in directing the installer to add extras, maybe due to the vintage of the
computer, you should be sure they are all installed.
(If the computer required OS X to be installed first, then you have a
different vintage issue on your hands. Some were that way.)
If one of the discs has a scratch or smudge, or if they aren't all for
the computer in question, the issue may be due to those details.
When you have OS 9 running on the computer, you could try going on-
line and running the OS 9 software update to see if there are some odd
updates to add to the running system. You may have to rebuild the
desktop and other routines for OS 9 to work, and continue to do so, as
a part of the install and update process.
If you have any proper OS 9 vintage disk utilities, you may wish to see
if any of them were decidedly good to use, and if not, discard them. A
few were great, and some were OK. Later on, some of the OS9 names
were making stuff for OS X; and a few were bad at it. Be advised.
OS 10.0 is hardly considered an operating system and nothing available
after that required it to be on the computer before hand; so it may be a
good deal to not install OS X 10.0.0 ~ 10.2.8 versions at all. Panther 10.3
    was the first really ready OS X version for general purposes & it did well;
however, there are no new browser or much of anything current for it,
    and no security updates, either.
If you do go into OS X, you may need to see if there is a suitable Firmware
Update required for that computer, to run OS X 10.2 or later (or any) and
if the Boot ROM or other indicator of a firmware version appears in the OS9
System Profiler, note what it is. The firmware should be updated and the
download from Apple Support for those older computer updates is free.
Since it is a G4 (you say) it may not need a firmware update. Check.
{If you had a retail installer for Panther 10.3 and went through the steps to
include the disc set and what not with the computer, or installed it (by so
doing, that beings a process of personalizing the installation; a new owner
may have to change the password to use it, but whatever name is used
to set up the new OS X system will remain in the computer.) They may not
    like having your name in their computer; or having to reinstall & update it.}
A working OS 9.2.2 in a clean machine, without issues, with installer discs
to support the license agreement behind the system within the computer, is
set for use or sale; to install a very old OS X system is no advantage. To
include a vintage and basic OS X 10.3 retail installer disc set would leave
the window of opportunity for the machine to run a practical old OS X.
    Note:
+Some computers shipped with installer discs which required a certain+
+and specific install path to get OS 9.0.x or 9.1, or 9.2 installed first,+
+and then the option sometimes was OS X 10.0 or 10.1, etc. Later on,+
+some of the dual-boot computers had to have a correct OS X 10.+
+installed first and then an OS 9.2 installed from a special OS 9 disc.+
If you are curious about your computer's exact identity, you could
try matching it by model number and build date era either from the
database at Apple Support (see products listing in scroll sidebar)
or see if you can use the information in the free download of the
handy database from MacTracker from: http://mactracker.ca
While I could probably spend some more time on this, and find
most of the details, I don't have the computer sitting here. You do.
    Good luck & happy computing!

    Holvi,
You will probably be able to find the iWork'09 DVD at Amazon or similar online vendor. Install from the DVD and immediately run Software Update to get to the latest version.
The Terms of Use here dictate that we test our suggestions before posting, but obviously I'm not going to try this myself, so there's an element of risk, but it seems your only option. It has worked for users in the past, but you never know how OS upgrades can change such things. If you go this route, please post back with your results.

  • Version Cue won't install G4 Mac

I just downloaded and installed CS3 (standard) last night and after two complete installs, Version Cue won't load. When I try to configure it via System Preferences, there PreferencePane isn't there. Does anyone know what is going on?? I just spent a lot of money on CS3 and I was expecting it to work out of the box. Please help if you can.
Another thing I've noticed is that there are no startup scripts in when you choose "Reveal in Finder" in Bridge Prefs. Is this normal?
    Thx!
    James

    @ John
Sorry to hear that. Not sure what happens.
Are you sure that your machine is now completely cleaned before you did a new install?
There are some smaller things that are not cleaned by the CS3CleanTool.
This could be an issue with pre-release versions of Version Cue. The Version Cue client is a part needed by PS, AI, ID, IC and Bridge. (And though older, pre-release versions have been on your machine!)
I'm not quite sure what you mean with update?
As far as I know you have an upgrade CD set or DVD and you install the CS3 but you only need the old CS2 number to install, right!?
Do you have the CS2 still on your machine?
I spent a lot time to test the cleaning of my MAC system and install the shipped CS3 on a system where a lot pre-release versions have been before and it works.
But I learned to clean it by hand.
If you have the guts to install again, delete the following and then do a repair install of the Version Cue server with Premium CS3 installer:
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Version Cue CS3/Client/...
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Bridge CS3 Extensions/Adobe Version Cue Extension/...
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Startup Scripts CS3/Adobe Version Cue/...
    /Users/Library/Preferences/Adobe/workflow..
This should help even if the AUm updates the VC to 3.0.1.
It does on my Macs. And - unfortunately - I had to install the whole suite three times this year because I changed my machines so often....
    Good luck :D
