Installing on 12" PBG4

I have the original 1.0 version on CD. 1.5 is now compatable with my PBG4 although the v1.0 CD won't allow the installation and the updates won't run without 1.0 installed. Any ideas on how to get 1.5 up and running on the G4 without getting the full version 1.5 CD? Thanks in advance
iMac 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The 12" G4 PowerBook is not on the compatible list unfortunately. I got up to version 1.1.1 on my 12" with some help from macosxhints.com

  • Performed tiger clean install on old pbg4 and no ilife

Hi all. I just performed a clean install on my old pb g4 (titanium) and now have no iphoto, imovie, etc. apps. I don't have a copy of the ilife disc as I've always just received my computers with the apps on them. How do I get these apps without having to buy new ilife 06? I don't have original discs that came with computer as I got it used.
Can I use target disc mode to move apps from my new macbook c2d to old pbg4? Both are running 10.4.8.
    Thanks...:)
macbook c2d g4 ibook, graphite ibook, ipod   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The Tiger retail install package does not include iLife which is sold separately or included with the Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac.
The apps included with the Tiger retail install package are listed here.
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/
Was an iLife version included with the install package that shipped with this Mac when new and if so, which version? If yes, you no longer have the install package for this Mac?
Or did you purchase iLife 05 or 06 separately and no longer have this install disc?
Either way, you are in trouble.
Doubtful the iLife applications on your new MacBook are Universal which is required to run the applications on a PPC Mac. More than likely they are Intel binaries only so will not work on a PPC Mac and regardless, doubtful just moving the applications over this way will work.

  • Installing Classic on PBG4

I've read through several threads on this topic, but I'm adding a new twist:
The backstory is that my TiBook (1GhZ) originally shipped with OS X 10.2.something. After 10.3 was released, I updated to that using discs licensed to the university I was with at the time (I do not have copies of those discs). Not long ago, my hard drive died and was replaced. I then reinstalled 10.3 using store-bought installation discs, which do not include an OS 9 installer.
The question is: what is the best way to get Classic back on my TiBook? I haven't tried using my original 10.2 discs because they are off in storage somewhere, but is it possible to use the Restore CD that originally came with the machine?
As an aside, since I'm a couple thousand miles away from where the 10.2 discs are stored, and there's some work I need to do that requires Classic, I tried installing from a friend's store-bought 9.2.1 installer disk (grey with white text) until I could get my hands on them. There is some debate (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=660008&tstart=15) as to whether 9.2 can be installed on a TiBook in this way. I was unable to boot from the disc - I got an error message (number 11, FWIW) saying that I needed to make sure all extensions were turned off, which pretty much just confused me.
So, are the 10.2 discs my only hope? Or is there another solution out there?
    1GhZ PowerBook Ti   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi, Kevin -
So, are the 10.2 discs my only hope?
Yes, if you want a full functioning install of OS 9 (Classic).
Your G4 PB 1.0GHz model is the last PB model capable of booting to OS 9; it needs the model-specific version of OS 9.2.2 that came with it, installable from its original disks, if you want a bootable OS 9. It can not use an OS 9.2.1 Install CD for installing purposes.
These articles can help in re-installing OS 9 (Classic) from your original disks -
Article #61802 - How to restore your Apple software
Article #106294 - Mac OS X: How to reinstall Mac OS 9
Article #60847 - How to Perform a Multiple Disc Restoration
Article #107383 - Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3: How to perform Mac OS 9 clean installation with Restore CDs
Article #42929 - Using Restore Discs with Mac OS X 10.2 or later
If you just need OS 9 for use as Classic, and not as a bootable OS 9, your choices are greater.
    • You can copy a working OS 9.1 or greater (OS 9.2.x would be better) System Folder from another machine. Although this would not be bootable, it should provide a full complement of services for use in Classic.
    • You can copy an OS 9 System Folder from an OS 9.1 or greater (again, OS 9.2.x would be better) Install CD. Since the System Folders on OS 9 Install CDs have a very limited assortment of control panels and extensions, many services would not be available in this config.

  • Freeze during 10.4 archive and install

Hi. I'm doing an Archive and Install on my PBG4 and the installation was going fine until I put in the second disk (as requested) and it is now hung-up on "Installing GarageBand Application." It has been for about 30 minutes - "Writing files: 8% complete". Does anyone have any advice? I think I need to bailout of the install but I'm concerned about doing that. I DO have a complete back-up. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That being said, nobody can say for certain, only guess, and +most of the time+ you won't lose everything by Force Quitting, but it CAN happen, and since it already is having problems, it means you had Disk Problems before you started.
Try to get #1 DiskWarrior the CD, second get an external Firewire Drive for backups.

  • Spring-loaded folders not working.

Spring-loaded folders (when you place the cursor on a folder, press the mouse button down, and the folder opens) isn't working on two of my Leopard installed machines (a PBG4 and a MBP).
I went into Finder Preferences to make sure it was activated, and it was and changed the setting to open faster, but that did not make a difference. The folders just are not responding.
Has anyone else seen this and have a fix? Or maybe I'm overlooking another setting?

    Spring loaded folders:
Finder > Preferences > General to set the delay
Space bar to open immediately. Used for putting items into folders.
Stacks are folders dragged to the dock by the trash can, set options by ctrl clicking (right click / two fingers on trackpad click) the folder. Options depend on where you keep the dock. Fan isn't an option when the dock is placed on the side of the screen.
    Best.

  • PBG4 will not boot up- many attempted/failed solutions!

I'll preface this with my computers background: It is a 4.5 year old PBG4 running OSX. I used it in school for various projects, photoshop, illustrator, etc. For the past year or so it has basically been used for photos, internet, and basic nothings. I had trouble with the start up a while back and ever since I get really nervous turning it off so I rarely do.
Tonight, I was closing down my windows and one folder window would not close. I left it for quite a while and it was stuck. So I forced it down and attempted to re-start. That was 4 hours ago. Still no start up Earlier in the evening I noticed another strange and possible related error. When my power cord would loosen up the power would drain down to 30 or so minutes and the screen would go black. If I wiggled the cord and touched the mouse pad it would come back on. This has never happen before.
So I've been on this computer researching possible resolutions. I've tried to start on safe mode (holding down Shift), I've tried control + s, control + v, I have also done optioncommand+pr to reset the pram. I have booted off of the install disk and ran the quick hardware check with no problems found and then restarted. I am currently running the extended hardware test (and going to bed). I have tried to boot off of the start up disk but it only takes me to the install window and this is where I have stopped. I've searched around and haven't found an answer as to what installing OSx will do. Will it erase what I have saved and start clean?
I was ironically browsing Black Friday adds just a few hours before this happened and thinking maybe I should get an external hard drive to back my saved .docs, photos, old projects on just incase something like this were to happen!
Oh and a visual of what is happening-- I press power hear a chime with a black screen, a few seconds and the fans start up and the screen turns grey. If I wait a minute or so the screen goes black again and then returns to the grey screen. A few more seconds go by and the broken folder and question mark start to flash. If I have the install disk in and wait another minute or so it will finally catch the disk and start to read it. When I power it down I hold the power button for 10 seconds (I read to do that somewhere tonight) and I even tried to hold it down while starting it which causes it to make an unpleasant loud beep.
I hope someone out there can help with the information I have provided. I should also say (from reading other posts) that this is the correct start up disk. I only have one Mac so no disks to get confused with and I bought it directly from Mac- I am the first and only user/owner of this PBG4.
Lastly, I should mention that I have no idea what any of the above tricks, solutions, or methods mean- I simply followed directions for my symptoms.
    Thanks!

Hi, Andrea. The fact that you can start your computer up from an installer disc, run the Apple Hardware Test, and access the Installer (which also means you can access Disk Utility on the installer disc) all indicates that your computer is fundamentally sound, though your hard drive may not be.
Start up from your OSX 10.5 installer DVD — not the one that originally came with your Powerbook, because that contains an older OS version — and choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. In the left pane of the DU window, select your hard drive mechanism: the line that shows the drive manufacturer's name and model number. Click the First Aid tab in the right pane of DU's window, and check the drive's SMART status, reported near the bottom of the window.
If SMART status is "Failing," you'll need to replace the hard drive, and after doing so you'll want to see whether your data can be recovered from the old one. Post back for further advice if the drive is reported to be failing.
If SMART status is "Verified," the drive hardware is probably OK, and only its directory needs to be unscrambled. Click the Repair Disk button near the bottom of the Disk Utility window, and wait for the repair process to be carried out. If any problems are reported to have been found and repaired, run the Repair Disk routine repeatedly until no more problems are reported. Then quit Disk Utility and the Installer. Your computer should restart. Immediately hold down the trackpad button while it is restarting, and keep holding it down until the installer DVD pops out of the drive. The computer should start up normally from its hard drive.
Let us know how you fare.

  • Safe sleep hangs on my PBG4 1.67 HR

I just installed (myself) a new hard drive (went from the stock 80GB, which was almost full, to a 120GB Western Digital Scorpio WD1200VE). I think, but am not certain, that this problem appeared then (it could also be a coincidence).
When I sleep the PB now, the screen goes dark, however the white LED *stays lit* instead of pulses. I cannot wake the computer. The only thing I can do is force shutdown and restart. When I hold the power key to force shutdown, after a few seconds the LED goes out as I expect. But when I restart, the computer instead seems to wake from safe sleep (fuzzy greyscale window), and all my apps and documents are as they were before. I say "SEEMS to wake" because when I look at the Console log, I see that my PB actually doesn't write the ram contents to the hard drive (i.e., enter safe sleep) until I am pressing the power button to restart; then, one second later it spits it right back out to ram! So, all the time I think I'm "sleeping", it looks like the power is actually on but the screen is dark and the keyboard unresponsive. There is no activity reported in the logs during the "sleep" time, though.
I have so far tried resetting the PMU, and also run Tech Tool Pro4 tests (everything passed). Also, I deleted some plist files having to do with power management I read about here. Nothing has helped. After investigating more, I learned how to set the hibernate mode via Terminal; I set it to "0" (old style sleep), and that works -- the LED pulses and I am truly asleep, and opening the lid or pressing a key wakes the PB. hibernatemode 1 or 3 (both involving safe sleep) present me with the same problem I've described.
This is a tough one, I would like to be able to rely on safe sleep when I need to. Any ideas on the cause or troubleshooting tips are appreciated. Thanks!
    1.67Ghz PBG4 "HR"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.5GB ram

    Hi MasterG,
Yes, it's strange. However, you have given me a a further clue. I'd already checked the sleep timeout for when the system is idle - it was set at around 10 minutes, I think.
But, following your suggestion, I started looking at all the power options resulting in sleep, and setting them all to "do nothing". I found that changing the option for when the lid is closed from "sleep" to "do nothing" causes the screen to go blank for a second or so, and some disk activity to begin, but the laptop no longer sleeps. Instead, it resumes from where it left off after a few seconds, albeit only to repeat these steps almost immediately.
As a further test, I left the "When lid closed" setting on "sleep" for when the system is running on battery, and on "do nothing" for when it is running on mains. When on mains the system behaves as described above, when on battery it sleeps as I described in my first post (although I had initially thought that the problem didn't happen at all on battery).
So, the problem seems to be something to do with how the machine detects that the lid is closed. Do you know how that's achieved in L40s? Or is there a service manual available for it that might give a clue?
    Many thanks,
    Rob.

  • Help! Installed new RAM and now screen isn't coming on!

    Hi
I'm in a bit of a mess and would be grateful for any help with this one:
I have a Powerbook G3 500mhz Pismo that currently has a 512mb card in the top slot (Kingston PB100/512) that I installed about two years ago with no problems and an original 128mb in the bottom. At Christmas I bought another 512mb for the bottom slot – (Kingston KTA-PBG4/512 - This one is smaller than the first but it was the one reccomended by Kingston on their website for the Pismo).
I have just got round to installing it after backing up my system and I have good instructions on how to do it (I have replaced the HD two years previous with no problems)
Firstly I have to mention that just before I changed the RAM the laptop fell from a small stool (about 1.5feet high) onto carpet due to the unbalancing effect of taking out the battery/CD ROM. It landed on its edge where the power socket is. I immediately put it back together and turned it on to make sure it was ok - it came on fine and there were no problems visually, mechanically or otherwise, so I carried on with the installation.
I installed the new 512mb card in the bottom slot and re-assembled but when I turned it on the screen remained black! From the computer itself, however, it sounded as if it had started up ok – there was the chime and the familiar sound of the hard drive at start up.
To troubleshoot I removed the new RAM card and put back the old RAM as it was – this made no difference. I checked to see if the processor board was firmly in place or if I had dislodged any connectors by mistake within the area that I had worked but this made no difference. I also tried to re-set the parameter RAM and this made no difference.
Because the laptop took a small knock prior to installation, I am not sure if that has caused something to come loose or damage of some kind but as I mentioned I did test it immediately and it worked, so it’s either a delayed reaction or the new RAM card has caused it. – (As mentioned there is a difference between the two 512 cards in both name and size but the smaller size of the newer one I assume just reflects advancement in technology and it was reccomended by Kingston!)
If anybody has any advice on this I would be very grateful (and also, if anybody can point me in the direction of instructions on how to take the pismo apart to get to the connections to the screen that would be great – in case I have to do it)
    Many Thanks Barry
    PowerBook G3500mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    SpottyFox,
It sounds like you are properly seating the CPU card from your description, so I don't believe that is your problem. I am glad you checked the pins (I should have mentioned that as the next step if the reseating did not help). I cannot answer whether anything was damaged from your description of the pins; I have read where others have realigned bent pins with success so maybe your mileage will vary.
Start up your Pismo, then shine a flashlight directly into the display; if you can see data being written to the display, just the backlight is refusing to light. If this is the case, check the inverter board connections. The inverter is under the clutch cover and powers the fluorescent backlight in the display. Enlarge the bottom picture in this link to see the inverter:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G3-Pismo/Inverter-Page-10-Inverter
Check connections at each end of the inverter. Disassembly is not as extensive as this guide suggests. Support the back of the display, then remove the main battery, optical drive, lay the keyboard on its face on the palm rest, heat shield, and clutch cover...that's it.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/6.0.0.html
You might also connect the Pismo to an external display; failure here would suggest a more serious problem.

  • 10.5, from macbook pro purchase, installed on an external HD?

i expect i know the answer to this. but it never hurts to check...
i'm getting a new macbook pro. i am keeping my old powerbook to connect to my stereo system as my music server... (i did this with my previous powerbook 3 years ago and it has been great to have a dedicated music server connected to my stereo...)
i have an external hard drive with several partitions. i keep a full install of the OS and all disk utilities necessary for mainetnance, troubleshooting, back up etc on the external disk... i currently have 10.4 on my external disk... i use it to service both of my current powerbooks (1.5GHz and the old 500MHz). it works perfectly...
i plan to install 10.5 on the external disk so i can boot the new macbook pro. i'm not positive if the dvd that comes with the macbook pro will allow me to install to an external hard drive. however, it has also occurred to me that the dvd that come with the computers are usually customized to that particular model...
given this, i expect that, even if i can us the macbook pro dvd to install on the external drive, i won't be able to boot my old powerbook (G4 1.5GHz) from it... so i'm guessing that i'll have to buy the regular 10.5 dvd in order to install on the external disk so that i can boot either computer for maintenance and repair.
    am i right?

bummer... my external disk has data on it on the other partitions in addition to the bootable partition... this will take a lot of data tranfer, in addition to the various steps and transfers mentioned in that article...
i actually have the same thing happening in parallel at work... my old work PBG4 is being replaced and i'll want to make that external hard drive at work boot either the G5 or macbook pro... i'm also figureing out how i'm going to partition my macbook pro at work and how parallels will work with that... and powerpc to intel with the 10.4 to 10.5 transition... boy, i've got a lot of work ahead of me... it's great to get new equipment, but this a lot of change... of course, this is a crisis of luxury to be getting new computers both at home and work...
your reply was exactly what i needed to know...
    thanks!

  • Leopard completely trashed my HDD and now won't install on my MBP

I only moved away from Windows in the summer and now I feel I'm no better off. I've just upgraded my new MBP (only a few months old) to Leopard and it failed. Not only did it fail with some Sibling Link error (which fsck_hfs -r and other internet search result recommendations failed to resolve) but it resulted in my having to completely reformat my drive!
I then let the install disk do a format of my drive and install and now I get this "The installer was unable to create the folder BaseSystem.pkg on the volume ...." or words to that effect. So now I have a new MBP that won't boot and won't install an operating system!
    What is this? Apple's Vista?
Is there anything I can do to get this operating system to install???

do you have a software install disk that came w/ your computer. If so, load it up, go to disk utility, zero out your HD, and then reinstall the OS from that disk. Leopard absolutely, completely, totally, and irreversibly hosed my pbg4, so much so that not only would it not eject the fri@@@@ Leopard DVD, it wouldn't even cotton pickin' START UP, save for booting into Open Firmware.. I decided that before I trashed it, I'd try one more time to start it up, hold down the **** eject key, to see what happened. I waited 30 minutes to let myself cool off before using the **** thing as target practice and, well, what'd'ya know, it started up, ejected the Leo DVD, immediately following which I inserted the disc for 10.2.7, shut it down, started it up, it booted immediatley into the installer for that OS, I went to disk utility, zero'd out the HD, after which I went about installing 10.2.7. I'm now on my pbg4 w/ that system installed and it's working (so far) flawlessly. What an absolute crock of rat @@@@ Leopard is turning out to be. Oh, btw, on this pbg4 there were no haxies, no 10.4.10 widgets, nothing fancy, save perhaps for Nisus Express and Firefox. I have Leo on a separate HD on my g5 dual 1.8 which is exactly where it's going to stay until all those bright bulbs at Apple can figure out what the **** is going on.
    Hope you have better fortune,
    tony

  • How can I purchase and install additional memory in my powerbook G4?

I've got to install more memory into my powerbook G4 (currently just 256 MB  of DDR SDRAM, only 3.2 GB of free disk space and 1.5 Ghz PowerPC G4 processor).  Can someone point me toward a supplier of the memory cards I need, as well as a tutorial for how to do a self install?  I don't want to sink $$$ at the mac store on such an aging machine, but I want to keep her running as long as possible.  How high can I go with the memory on this machine given its restraints?
While I'm at it, is there anyway to amplify or boost the wireless signal receiver?  My machine has almost zero bars of internet connectivity in places where other machines have 4 bars.
    Thanks!  =O)

Did you physcally look at the RAM slots to confirrn two modules are installed? Do that before proceeding. It's very important--for some reason yours may have been ordered with only 256MB. Opening the RAM slot cover is a user-doable/approved operation
There was a repair extension program for the 15-inchers' RAM slot problem, but it's now long-expired. The next step is only if you physically can see two modules: If you feel that, as the original owner, this was not properly communicated to you, you could make a cool-headed and document-backed plea to Apple Customer Relations (1-800-767-2775 in North America).
"Is a logic board the same thing as a motherboard.. "
For all practical purposes, yes. Macs have logic boards; PC's have motherboards in common terminology. They are the mounting point and connectivity path for the processor and most other internal components. Presumably, the "mother" part was derived from epithets flamed forth by disgruntled PC users.
BeebleBrox has already linked one RAM vendor I use, Other World Computing. The other is Data Memory Systems:
    Apple PowerBook G4 1.5GHz 15" Screen (200 Pin PC2700 DDR SODIMMs)
I've ordered all my Mac RAM from only these two vendors for close to a decade and am very happy with both.
256MB RAM with OS 10.4.11 is like saying someone has an IQ of 10 but it takes 12 to grunt. My older PBG4 at 1Ghz also has 10.4.11 but 1G RAM. It does fine. A lack of RAM makes the Virtual Memory system spend a lot of time writing data to the hard drive when there is no more RAM available. The slowness this VM operation induces gets worse as the free space on the HD grows smaller as you add files and programs.
I don't think low RAM or a bad RAM slot would cause the wireless connection issues. The antenna is in the display frame as I recall. There are a lot of reports of a negative change in ability to pick up wireless networks being traced to other wireless devices in the area. See what's been added to the house/office that is also wireless.
What I don't know is where you are. I answered with the potentially flawed assumption that you are in North America. OWC ships internationally, but I don't believe DMS ships outside N. America without making you jump through hoops and hedgerows. Post your geographic locations in your profile info and it will make it easier for people to respond to the common "where can I get" questions.
This grew long, but what you need to do before anything else is open the RAM cover and count modules (They are "stacked" so one is covered by the other but should be visible). As I now know your screen size, I can link the instructions for doing so:

  • Can't run both PBG4 and Macbook on same TC network

I am trying to connect both a pbg4 and macbook core duo to my network using newly purchased time capsule. I first used Airport Utility from macbook hard wired via ethernet and set up the network. I have an AsDsl network with an old Westell Modem that always works in bridge mode and connects to my ISP via PPPoE. I used to use an US Robotics 8054 wireless router into whose WAN port I would plug in the modem.
I set up the TC as the main router, enabling my password at my ISP. Everything worked like a charm with the Macbook. When I tried to connect the PBG4, no luck. No matter what I did the PBG4 couldn't get the TC.
So I attached the US robotics to the one of the TC LAN ports. Using my old network, the pbg4 can access the TC and the internet. The macbook cannot access the TC at all.
I think this might be a DHCP problem. I think my set up doesn't allow more than one computer to be on the web. Also, something about the US robotics network makes the TC network invalid.
    Any thoughts?

if you have two hard drives the easiest might be to install panther on the second hard drive. this way you don't have top partition anything. make sure the drive is properly formatted it should be formatted mac os extended journaled with APM partition scheme. then just boot from the Panther install disk and install panther on the second drive. note that this will only work if your mac originally came with panther. did it?
to switch between installs you can change the startup disk in system preferences->startup disk. then reboot. alternatively, reboot normally and hold option at the chime. this will boot you into startup disk manager where you can choose which drive to boot from.

  • Installing external hard drive

    I've recently begun working a new PBG4, after years on a Pismo/FW w/OS9.2.
I've yet to use my LaCie D2 hard drives on the new PB. Do I need to install the drivers from the LaCie disks, or does OS 10.4.2 have the drivers, like it does for printers?
I know this is a pretty basic question, but would rather ask than interrupt my work flow with the wrong move.
    Thank you very much.
    adp

Firewire HD's do not require special drives. All versions of OS 10 have what you need.
The only way you would need a custom driver would be if the drive has any special extras. Some drives have buttons on them or special backup software, and these would need vendor drivers. But as just a standard HD, just plug it in and you should be good.
    Cheers,
    Josh

  • How to transfer my files from PBG3 to new PBG4

I just got my new PBG4 and need to set up.
To transfer my files or info from old PBG3, do I need buy a FireWire cable(6-pin)? Where can I buy?
Then, the Setup Assistant can do it? This Setup Assistant is easier or better for this procedure than Migration Assistant?
Thanks in advance for some suggestions!

Thanks, joeuu. Your answer pointed out what I need to check and know.
First, I think my old PBG3 has its capabilities. Its model is M7712LL/A and I think it is G3 Pismo. 500mhz, 20gb hd, and it has 2 firewire ports. The manual says firewire 2.3.3? and needs 6-pin connector.
And, I need to check the firmware is up-to-date. This old PBG3's current OS is 10.3 panther and use classic(OS 9.2.2?) together. By the way, I check the link joeuu suggested. One of the FAQs says can't not open or install? from OS X to up-to-date on my PBG3. I need to check this again. I am a bit confused...
I also read the other link and think it is good one. I need to read more carefully the link. By the way, what do you use to transfer files when you first set up computer like PBG4? Because manual transfer seems taking more time but it seems to me to have some more control over what I am doing...
