Installing on G4 with used hard drive
Hi, I was recently given an old G4 tower with no hard drive. I bought a used hard drive and hooked it up, but don't know how to reformat it or install Tiger on it. I have my Tiger disks and tried booting up with the C key pressed, but all it does is beep. Any thoughts? How can I boot onto the DVD?
Actually after adjusting the memory I now get the blinking question mark folder... still can't boot to the DVD.

That is definitely the problem. As a matter of fact, two problems.
i. You are attempting to use a computer specific installer on a computer to which it is not specific.
ii. You cannot install across platforms. You cannot use an installer specific to an Intel based Mac to install on a PowerPC based Mac and vice-versa.

New 17 in MBP--cannot install OS X with SSD Hard drive

I just bought the latest MBP from Apple's website last week. I previously had the previous generation (17in MBP with i7) I am using this SSD hard drive

My problem is OS X will not install on this drive ONLY on this new MBP. It fails about 1/2 through. I have tested the drive with disk utility and it comes back fine. I ran diagnostics on a Windows box and it came back fine. I have also placed this hard drive in the previous MBP and a 13 in MBP (core 2 duo) and it installed very fast and fine. THe drive has the latest firmware from Crucial.
When I go to install, it is very slow compared to the original 750GB 5400rpm drive. It takes about an hour before it crashes. I have a call in with an Apple senior level tech, but he is off until Monday and I really need to get this fixed. I am 200 miles away from an Apple store and while I am willing to drive it, they said over the phone they can not guarentee a fix.
I swapped out RAM, reset the PRAM, cried, prayed, and begged. What's going on? Is this a design flaw?? How can I get this to go through?

Put the SSD into an external enclosure and the original drive back into the MBP. Connect the external to the MBP, boot the MBP from the internal HD, format the SSD with Disk Utility, and clone the original hard drive onto the SSD after reformatting the SSD with Disk Utility. You can do the cloning with Disk Utility, but I prefer Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper because they're more informative about what's happening during the process. After the clone is complete, install the SSD into the MBP and test. -
Re-installing Windows 7 with more hard drive space via bootcamp - Help!
I have installed Windows 7 via bootcamp with success. However I didn't give enough hard drive space to Bootcamp (only 6MB available! Whoops...) Can I just delete the Boot Camp partition and start again or is it more complicated?

Mountain lion will not install because time machine uses hard drive for back up. What should I do?
I have downloaded Mountain Lion but it will not allow me to install because the time machine uses the hard drive to back up. How do I solve this problem?
Unless you are trying to install on an external hard drive that actually has been used for Time Machine backups, this is usually caused by having a folder named "Backups.backupd" on your hard drive somewhere. It may be at the root level of the hard drive, but may also be elsewhere. Try searching for it, and then delete it. (You shouldn't need it.)

I have a Mac Pro with four hard drives. I currently have Lion installed on one hard drive. I want to have the option to boot from either Lion or Snow Leopard. How can I do this?
It's best to install Snow Leopard on one of the three remain drives without an Operating System.
You can then install the applications you need from the original media. Create a User Account using Setup Assistant.
Do you want to migrate User Accounts from the OSX LIon boot drive, or are you keeping the User Accounts separate?
Dual-booting just requires holding the option key during startup and selecting either Lion or Snow Leopard. -
Operating system not found when deploying to machines with two hard drives using MDT 2013.
Computers with two hard drives will not boot after the install OS step in the task sequence. I get the "An operating system wasn't found. Try removing drives that don't contain an operating system" error. I am able to get the
machine to boot by swapping the hard drives' boot order, but the task sequence won't complete after this. The deployment works fine on machines with one hard drive, and I'm not getting any errors from the task sequence. I'm deploying windows7
enterprise x64 using MDT2013. This is a new custom image and task sequence generated using MDT2013. I can't remove the second hard drive because there are scripts that run on the second hard drive during deployment and also because I don't desire
to remove and re-install 250 hard drives. I've not experienced this problem with earlier versions of MDT.The bdd.log file you sent does not show two internal drives, it shows only one.

Cannot Install Windows 8 on Y480 with 1TB hard drive + 32GB ssd
After spending 12 hours on friday and 8 hours today doing screen share with techs from Microsoft, they have determined that Windows 8 will not install on this computer. Have tried everything from installing directly off of the hard drive, off a flash drive, off a dvd, to doing a complete clean install and nothing works.
Completely reformatting the hard drive was also attempted but the installation could not be completed becasue the partition I was installing on was oem restricted.
Anyone else had problems like this yet?Ya, I'll definately keep ya'll updated. And I'm gonna keep messing with it to see if I can get it to work fairly efficiently.
In responce to superior, ya it'll work with pretty much any other laptop with a traditional hard drive, full ssd, or a company that updates the software on their machines for their customers when a major OS update is available. Hell, the release preview worked on my y480 through vmware. (It's definately a problem with the fact that the two drives are viewed as a single drive in 3 partitions, the main hdd, the sdd, and the backup hdd partition)
In terms of getting a refund, you may or may not need to have a case number with Microsoft, I'm not sure, but if i pursue that path, I'll definately post something.
If anyone is dead set on getting Win8 to work on their hybrid drive even if it isn't working completely efficiently, separate the ssd and hard drive using the Intel rapid utility so they show up as separate drives rather than separate partitions and then just install Win8 on the SSD. I'd advise you don't do this cause as I said, it entirely defeats the purpose of having a SSD since you'll need to store a majority of you data on the hard drive which isn't being accelerated with Rapid. Essentially, it would be near equivalent to having just a 5400rpm hard drive. -
I have paid and downloaded LION and want to update my IMAC, can i just run install and it keep photos settings etc from Snow Leopard or is a full reinstall with wiped hard drive, anyone have any experience of this and do i need to run a backup beforehand?
Always backup your important data before upgrading to a new Mac OS X.
Lion doesn't erase the drive but better to be safe than sorry.
And run Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities). Verify and if necessary repair the startup disk before upgrading.

I have two hard drives on my mac 10.5.8 power pc and hear the clickking sounds of the first hard drive and think that it may be dying, can I install everything on the other hard drive also and wait for the first drive to die before i use the other drives? Or, what is the best way to handle this?

I'd make a backup of your important stuff before cloning the entire disk.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external firewire drive. You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

Tried your suggestion various ways but it had no effect the download button was still greyed out and the install button would not activate will keep trying to find a solution. I dont want to boot from the external hard drive that has Lion on mainly because it is a usb HD and the connection to my wireless modem slows the connection rate and downloading would take about ten hours -
I need to install CS6 on a replacement hard drive and need help with deactivation/reactivation
I have had a major hard drive crash that is resulting in my replacing the drive in my Mac with a new one, then re-installing my programs onto it. I have a copy of CS6 on the current bad hard drive that is activated. Do I need to deactivate it before installing it on my new hard drive even though it will be on the same computer, just a different hard drive? If so, how can I deactivate it when the drive the Creative Suite is on is bad? Is there a place on Adobe's website that I can log in and manage my activations if I have to deactivate in order to put CS6 on my replacement drive?
hi. I have the exact same problem. I'm getting the 'configuration' error, and my uninstall application for each application with CS6 'can't be found' since it is apparently an alias. I'm not getting any answers from Adobe and getting frustrated. Would simply like to know how to uninstall or start from scratch. I'll let you know if I hear anything. Technically speaking, however, the issue is that the install/restore DVDs that ship with Macs do not carry all the drivers, or even all of the various versions of libraries that support all of the various models of Macs. The come-with-your-Mac disks are different than the retail versions of the OS (also, the come-with-your-Mac ones bundle iLife, which the retail ones don't).
Because the come-with-your-Mac disk contains only the drivers specific to that generation and model line of Mac, it contains a stub of code that verifies that your hardware matches the driver set on the install/restore DVD.
Your friend has a different model of Mac, with different hardware, so her install/restore disk won't work in yours. Solution: go get the retail boxed version of Leopard. -

Answer to question 1 ; using a backup & recovery software to clone my current OS, then transfer to my new hard drive.
Answer to question 2 ; download all the Drivers and software ( all the application that located on the DVD kit that I have) on Lenovo Official Website.
or other solution, send it to a computer service shop and let the experts ( the workers) install it for me ( the most simple and safe way).
