Installing on iBook G4 - Microsoft no longer works

I installed Leopard on my son's iBook G4 (1.2mgz). Systems was okay except I did go thru a hassle getting his iPod Touch to work. After dealing with Apple care that was resolved. They are great! However, microsoft office is not working. When you open the application it freezes. Our version of Microsoft of 10.1.6. Has anyone else had problems with this? I'm thinking perhaps I need a newer version of Microsoft. I've also been told that our computer isn't the best platform for Leopard.

Your computer's fine for Leopard. I've run it on an unsupported G4, 450 MP machine with as good results as with Tiger for over two years (I beta-tested it). Your MS Office is woefully out of date. There have been two major upgrades: Office 2004 and Office 2008. Additionally, Office X is at 10.1.9. • IBook Ethernet Network no longer working after upgrade to 10.2

    This is really strange but i was using ethernet on os 9 and the dhcp server from my speedtouch router came up and everything worked fine. But yesterday i upgraded to os x 10.2 and the ethernet connection no longer works. I have tried unplugging (this usually works with pc crap) and restarting both the ibook and the router. I know that the router is working fine as i am using the same lead on my powerbook to get internet. Here are the ibook specs:
    Indego 366mhz (not firewire model), no airport installed and only has ethernet, usb and modem connections. Any help would be appreciated.

    1.) Download all OS X 10.2.x updates from software updater.
    2.) After all updates are installed, check system profiler to ensure that your network card is detected and operating properly.
    3.) Check for updated drivers for your specific network card.
    4.) Verfiy and repair permission in OS X, and if possible download Onyx to execute maintenance and cleaning commands.
    After all these steps, there should be no more problems.
    Good Luck

  • After installing latest update Realplayer recording no longer works, I think Mozila is using a library file with the same name

    After installing the latest update to Firefox onto Vista operating system the record part of real player no longer works, I think Mozila and Real are using a library file with the same name and the Mozila update is overwriting a Realplayer library file.

    I was giong to say, "Help me, Adobe Joe Kenobi", but it looks like you're growing a beard waiting for an answer, too.
    The same thing happened to me today. I trusted the "update" message since it was from Adobe, and apprently did so at my own peril. Now I get the "failed to load Core dll" message with a secondary reference to a memory address.
    Just an observation, but what good are these forums when there are no answers? I see this problem as "Caused by Adobe Update", and would expect them to troublshoot and offer up a remedy. Since you've been waiting over two months with no response, I suppose it's time to trek off wasting more of my precious time to fix their problem. If I find the solution, I'll post it back to you.
    May the Force be with you.

  • How do I force/re-install failed Leopard update (USB no longer works)?

    Hi everyone,
    The last Leopard update last week went smooth with two out of three of my Macs.
    Unfortunately the update did not work well on my MacBook Pro 17". I let the update
    run over night and in the morning it was still stuck on an "installing" screen. I had no
    choice but to force a reboot. From what I can tell a lot of the system .kext files were
    updated, but my kernel was not. How do I know this? Well my USB ports no longer work
    (well at least with USB memory sticks). I checked my kernel version and it says 9.3.0. The
    versions for the System.kext file under /System/Library/Extensions is showing 9.4.0.
    Obviously I got far enough into the update that the newer system file works (almost)
    with the older kernel.......
    So how can I force this update to run again??? I really don't want to reload my MacBook Pro
    from scratch. There must be a fix... Please help!
    Thanks,
    Mike Bender

    Alternatively, restore your previous good and tested bootable backup/clone, then run the COMBO update again. Don't have one? Then take some time to peruse:

  • Installed Yosemite - audio line out no longer working

    After installing Yosemite, sound will only play from my Mac Pro's internal speakers.
    Opening Preferences > Sound and selecting Line Out has no effect.
    Why does the Line Out no longer work with Yosemite?

    Update:
    Seems issue with keyboard volume not working crops up again each time the system enters "sleep" mode.
    Volume controls will visually make the volume appear to adjust on screen, but not affect sound level to external speakers.
    Only solution I've found so far is a reboot.
    Never encountered this with Maverick's or any previous OS.

    In IE you can see there is the 64-bit version - (in Firefox there was just the 32-bit version) - got to: (others)

    choose your system and version
    download it via internet explorer and install the adobe flash player
    restart firefox and it should work.

  • Microsoft no longer works?

    i have just updated to OS X Mountain Lion and now microsoft word etc do not run. Please help?

    Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
    However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. Revert back to your older OS X;
    2.  Either partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) to allow for a "dual-boot" system;
    3.  Upgrade your PowerPC software or use an alternative programs; or
    4.  The solution I use: Install Snow Leopard (and Rosetta) into Parallels 7 or 8:
                                  [click on image to enlarge]
    Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
    NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
    NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

  • The system of installing updates has changed, and no longer works

    Updates used to happen by Firefox asking "There is an update for Firefox - do you wish to install it now or on restart?". I would check the restart option, and next time I launched Firefox it would tell me that an update was being installed.
    Now I get a dialogue box saying an update is available, (Firefox 3.6.16), recommending I take it and offering me two buttons :
    "ASK LATER"
    "UPDATE FIREFOX"
    If I choose the latter option, I get a window showing :
    '''Downloading update'''
    Downloading the update...
    Connecting to the update server...
    And that's all that happens until I quit Firefox, maybe hours later. I'm sorry, but the old method WORKED. This new method DOESN'T. It means I am now stuck with 3.6.13 as I cannot get an update. Please revert to the old way of doing it.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Changing the library the Apple TV is synced with will delete all synced content from the Apple TV, but it won't delete purchased content.
    You should be able to change the library, resync any content you want and transfer your purchases back to the new library.

  • Just installed iMac firmware update - iphoto no longer works (beach ball)

    I just installed the most recent iMac and keyboard firmware updates. Now when i try to use iphoto it opens quickly and then as soon as i try to do anything i get the spinning beach ball until i force quit. I have no idea how to fix this. I have rebooted and the same results.
    Any ideas?

    Well it somehow fixed itself ... now everything works fine ... hopefully it doesn't return.
    Thank you.

  • Since installing Lion my MS keyboard no longer works properly. I'll go back to SL before I'll give up this keyboard.

    I'm out of my element here. I've been using Macs for >20 years and this is my first real disappointment. I hurried to install Lion on my MBP and now Quicken won't work . . . and my longterm favorite keyboard (MS Natural Ergonomic 4000) is near useless. Hitting the COMMAND key in conjunction with "P"/"S"/"C"/"W" or any other common shortcut doesn't work. Is there a fix in the future? Has anyone found a way to recover from anything similar? Many thx.

    I started a thread on the same topic (sorry):
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15777365#15777365
    Some have found that the IntelliType Pro 8.1 64-bit driver does make the keyboard work.

  • Since installing Mt. lion our FAX no longer works

    We have a Canon Pixma MX860 All in One which has worked like a charm for printing, scanning and faxing until installing Mt. lion.  Now the outgoing FAX does not work.  We have two phone lines and one is a dedicated fax line with a distinctive ring sound.  When we now try to FAX, everything starts out fine.  There is a ring and then a fax noise, but it interrupts immediately thereafter before a connection is made.  We then get a printed report, Incomplete Transmission and a result of NG.

    As sig has mentioned, the fax component of the MX860 is totally independent of the Mac. Canon does not make a fax driver for the MX series for OS X, so the failure of the machine to send is a conincidence, not a result of upgrading to Mtn Lion.
    With regards to the fax issue, have you still been able to receive faxes?
    And for the sending of faxes, are you getting the same NG result to all destinations?

  • After installing Darwinports 2.1, Apache no longer works

    Hi,
    After installing Darwinports 2.1 and Awstats 6.5 (via DP), Apache no refuses to start via the System Prefs. I noticed that during the Awstats install, DP started installing a lot of stuff, like Apache 2.2.2. Does anyone know if this has anything to do with it?
    Oh, also, my httpd log says this...
    Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/noah.conf
    [Thu Jun 15 23:07:11 2006] [crit] (48)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to port 80

    Hi The Nipponese,
       I see no evidence that you're starting Apache as root. I don't know that you're not — there's no evidence either way — but just in case let me mention that in order for httpd to bind to port 80, a privileged port, it must be running as root. The daemon will spawn subprocesses to handle established connections that run as an unprivileged user such as "www". However again, the daemon must be running as root to do this.
       Also, is it no longer the custom to use apachectl to start Apache? I administer an Apache2 server on a Linux box and I'm virtually certain that apachectl is still there. Of course it may have simply been left there so that us oldtimers didn't have to change a few habits.

  • Snow Leopard install: now MobileMe and Hotmail no longer working

    Hi everyone,
    I'm having issues emailing since upgrading to Snow Leopard last friday.
    I have 5 different email addresses, of which two are still working and three stopped working in Mail:
    * MobileMe account (stopped working)
    * 2 Hotmail accounts (stopped working)
    * Gmail account (still working)
    * XS4ALL webmail account (still working)
    I've chatted with MobileMe support for quite some time and have tried the following, all to no avail:
    * taking the accounts offline/online manually
    * deleting the accounts from Mail and add new ones (with and without using SSL)
    * using LAN instead of wifi
    * using a few of my neighbors' unsecured wifi connections
    * changing ports
    * repairing disk permissions
    * creating new user account on MBP and then create mail account
    * the support agent even created a new MobileMe account
    * installing mozilla thunderbird
    Basically, when i try to send emails from my MobileMe account or my hotmail accounts, OR when setting up a new account (either using Mail or Thunderbird), i get the message:
    "cannot send message using the server [email protected]". If i continue the set up it says it was unable to connect to the smtp server.
    Furthermore, something struck me after having deleted my MobileMe account and my two hotmail accounts from Mail. When i quit and relaunched Mail, an email that was in my outbox popped up saying it could not be sent because it couldn't connect to the smtp server, and asked me to manually select another server from a list. In that list the MobileMe account and the two hotmail accounts were still there! After having deleted them..
    After all this, MobileMe support thought it was a Mail issue and said i would need to contact the OS X Mail support team. Haven't gotten around to that yet. However, since i get the exact problem in Thunderbird as in Mail, happening right after upgrading to SnowLeopard, I'm kinda thinking it's the OS itself.
    Anyone any suggestions? I hope to not have to spend another evening w/ Apple support (however friendly they always are).
    Thanks!
    Tjade

    I cannot set up my hotmail account. Keeps giving me this error:
    "The Hotmail POP server “pop3.live.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.
    Can't say it worked or not before the upgrade to Snow Leopard cause I didn't try to set it up prior.

  • I have just installed Firefox 6, and Rapport no longer works - the same problem that you had with Firefox 5. What is happening?

    You prompted me to install Firefox 6 this evening, as it addresses serious security/stability problems, but when I did this, the Rapport icon vanished from the address bar. Reinstalling the current version of Rapport has not fixed this.
    The same thing happened a few months ago with Firefox 5, and it took Rapport a week to develop a new compatible version.
    Why has this happened again? Do you not check this before launching new versions? Or, why at the very least do you not warn us beforehand that some programs will not work for X days? I'd prefer to be without the latest Firefox for a week or so rather than without Rapport - not least because my bank requires me to use Rapport.
    Please advise ASAP.

  • How do I keep all my documents in iBooks that were purchased from on line store not at the iTunes Store. (Ver 7 has screwed up iBooks and it no longer works)

    I have hundreds of 3rd party purchased lists and legal documents I keep in Ibooks. Since upgrading to version
    7 iBooks only opens for a few seconds then closes any open document and kicks me all the way out of iBooks
    How do I keep these and reload ibooks ? I am 500 miles from my main PC and need thee forms now.

    The iPad is not new. It is almost 2 yrs old. Many of the documents are legal documents, legal journals text books etc that have a 30 day limit on downloads and that time period has expired. Your post suggested closing all applications and forcing a power down. That I have done several times. I have not restored the software as that would require deleting the contents. Not all the files are backed up and the ones that are, reside on my personal laptop that is states away and will be for at least a week and I need the data now.
