Installing Oracle 10g on Another Partition

hi all,
This is a Windows 2003 server with the operating system on drive C and a blank partition mapped as drive E.
There's not much space left on C so I'm thinking of installing both the Oracle software and the databases on the E drive.
I can't think of any problems that could occur by having the database software on a different drive than the OS is on but I wanted to ask before I move forward.
Thanks, John

Thanks to both of you for your opinions.
To be able to install everything onto the E drive, I will have to specify the "Custom" type of install, am I correct?
Thanks, John

  • How to install Oracle 10g on another partition

    Hi,
On my desktop on Disk C:\ (O.S. Windows) I've got Oracle Client for accessing to Oracle Database 8i that is the version used in the company where I work and that is installed on Unix server. As I'd like to install the Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (for practice) on my PC and the Oracle Database 10g Client Release 2 as well, I've got two questions:
1 - Will the installation procedure allow me to install Oracle Database 10g Release 2 on another partition of my PC (I've got Disc D:\ on it)?
2 - Above all will it be possible to install Oracle Database 10g Client Release 2 on Disc D:\ or the installation procedure will make me to install on C:\ where I've already the "orant" directory for accessing to Database Oracle 8i I have to work on?
Sorry for the questions but I'm afraid of committing errors in installing 10g having already a client for 8i which I must still have for working
    Thanks!

    I've got two more questions:
1 - for a PC stand alone where I'd like to install Oracle Database 10g anb Oracle Database 10g Client, which version should I use? Do I have to use the Express Edition or what else? I've looked at http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/index.html
You can use express if you want. I've succesfully run Enterprise Edition on an XP-Pro laptop.
2 - Are you sure I will have no problem about the ORACLE_HOME or about PC's register having on the same PC, even if on different partitions (Disk C:\ and D:\), Not if you install it correctly. Oracle is designed to support multiple version installations on the same box.
two versions of Oracle 8i (only client) and 10g (db plus client)? You don't need to install the 10g client. All Oracle database installs include the client software.

I saw this once but I forgot how I solved it. I believe that I made a softlink to the libc.so.6 from another libc. Have a look on Metalink, becauses I've got the idea for my solution there.

  • ORA-12154 while installing Oracle 10g on windows 7

    Hi,
I am trying to install Oracle 10g express edition on my machine (core 2 duo 2.93) running on Windows 7.
The installation moves on perfectly for the 1st step and while running the 2nd step (Net configuration Assistant), it gives the ORA-12154 error.
The contents of my configuration files at this point are as follows:
    Listener.ora
    =============
    SID_LIST_ORCL =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (SID_NAME = ORCL)
    (ORACLE_HOME = F:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1)
    (PROGRAM = extproc)
    ORCL =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    =============
    And that of tnsnames.ora is:
    =============
    ORCL =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = ORCL)
    =============
After some googling around, I have found and installed the Microsoft Loopback adapter too (since my LAN is DHCP enabled) and also tried to turn on the firewall on my machine to check if it is not a problem with the port 1521 being blocked by the firewall.
However, even after all that I still get the error "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified." while running the Net configuration Assistant and/or running SQL Plus to connect to the SID - ORCL.
I can only see one service running in my services by the name : OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListenerORCL
Any suggestions or advice on the error would be much welcome.
Is it anything related to Windows 7 ? Because I have managed to install using the same installer on another machine which runs Windows XP and everything seems fine there.
    Thanking you all in anticipation.

Hmmm.. but then I'd have expected some installation error. I have read around that people have managed to install oracle on windows 7.
The error displayed seems to be indicating that there is some configuration or permissions issue.Check that the user has permission to write in the ORACLE_HOME\network\admin - UAC might be blocking that.
Install with software only, and run netca & dbca separately to create the database after the s/w install. (That's the way it is done in production anyway, so get used to it.)
But yes - you still may have problems. Those who did fake it out on Windows 7 usually understand what to do. If you are smart enough to actually do it, my hat is off to you.

  • How to Install Oracle 10g in Windows 7 Home premium 64bit operating system

    Hi,
I am using Windows 7 Home premium 64bit operating system. While i was installing oracle 10g i got error and not able to install. How to install the Oracle 10g databse on this operating system. Is there any patch to install this or i have to use other version of oracle with window 7 operating system?
    Thanks in advance
    Mayank Adhikari

The argument would be who wants to install Oracle database on Windows 7. I think most probably by the developers who wants to "Try" something prior deal with a production database, right?
For a developer, installing database using the hack is more than NOT having a local database running from the local system. I installed all the products mentioned with windows7bugs post and used the following tools to successfully connect and retrive data from the database instances.
    Toad 9.7.x.x
    SQL Developer
    SQL/Plus
Developer 6i (Another hack, please check this link http://windows7bugs.wordpress.com/2010/03/01/installing-oracle-developer-forms-reports-6i-on-windows-7-64bit/).
I think the discussion about whether all the features of client/server are still available with such a hacked installation is meaningless as far the information requested was strictly for Windows 7, not for a Server OS.

  • Install oracle 10g on windows 2003 server issues

I am very new to oracle
I installed oracle 10g release 2 Enterprise Edition on a Win 2003 Server.
I got all oracle services running after install
But I can not connect to the database from another machine which is on the same domain
    I set USE_SHARED_SOCKET =TRUE under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Oracle/HOME
(as I learned from the forum)
I turned off windows firewall (or with the firewall turned on add port 1521 to Exceptions list) .
I restarted listener serivces and I even reboot the machine Still I can not connect to the database from another machine.
    What am doing wrong here?
We are on a tight schedule now any help will be very appriciated.

Firewall-related problems normally throw ORA-12535, not ORA-12170 (the message a timeout occurred is the same). Description for this error is:
    Error:     ORA-12170 (ORA-12170)
    Text:     TNS:Connect timeout occurred
Cause:     The server shut down because connection establishment with a
client failed to complete within the allotted time interval. This
may be a result of network/system delays; or this may indicate
that a malicious client is trying to cause a Denial of Service
         attack on the server.
Action:     If the error occurred because of a slow network/system,
         reconfigure the SQLNET.INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT parameter in
sqlnet.ora to a larger value. If a malicious client is suspected,
use the address in sqlnet.log to identify the source and restrict
access. Note that logged addresses may not be reliable as they can
         be forged (e.g. in TCP/IP).
Hostname in listener.ora has a domain included, while in tnsnames.ora has not. Y Can you ping the host? Does tnsping work? To get more detailed informations you may turn on tracing on the client side (in sqlnet.ora) and the server sid (in listener.ora).

  • Installing oracle 10g xe edition on linux

    Hi,
I am trying to install oracle 10g xe edition on redhat linux. By default the oracle database rpm package uses /usr/lib partition for installation files. Is it possible to install the oracle database files in /export partition instead of default location /usr/lib?
    Thanks
    Kapil

There are a few differrent 'RedHat Linuxes' ... could you be a bit more specific.
But ... the default answer is 'no'. Several of us have used various workarounds, including creating a special link from /usr/lib/oracle to /export/oracle and the like.
I installed in /usr/lib and after successful installation I created a special link, copied everything to the new target, and have had no problems at all.
Others have used other techniques with success. INcluding the one by cd - tweak the install script.

  • An issue while installing oracle 10g express edition on Ubuntu 10.04-64bit

    Hi,
I'm running into an issue while installing oracle 10g express edition on my Ubuntu 10.04-64 bit installed machine using oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb package. The issue actually came up when I was trying to reinstall the package after uninstalling it due to some problem I had with my login credentials. To elaborate further on it, the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script does not get created when I execute the debian package and thus i'm unable to configure the required credentials and stuff after the installation. I doubt whether this has something to do with the procedure I followed when uninstalling the previous package it. But what I did was just what's mentioned in the following [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/install.102/b25144/toc.htm] user guide published by oracle.
Another important clue would be, the platform of my machine is amd64bit although I'm dealing with an installation package preferred for i386. But I believe it's the only thing available in the oracle software download section. Hence I had to use the --force-architecture option to install it. But after reading some post published on this forum, I've figured out that it does not affect the usual execution of the software. Anyway,  I would greatly appreciate some help on this matter.

    Hi,
Finally I've managed to find a solution for this issue. Thanks a lot for all the replies.
Here's how I got rid of it.
Addressing all the facts one by one,
1.The problem of not getting the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script generated was avoided
by removing all the configuration files that were previously created while installing
the product. The following command can be used to accomplish that task.
    *$ dpkg --purge oracle-xe*
2.Next, Initially the password I used during the configuration process was "admin".
Although I tried a couple of times installing the product providing the aforementioned
password, the web UI kept prompting "Invalid Credentials" message not allowing me
to login. But, this particular issue could be avoided by giving some other simple
    password.
Finally, got it working and once again thanks a bunch for taking the burden of
    replying this thread.
    Cheers,
    Prabath

    1) which Linux(freeware) flavor should I install ?Ordinarily, I'd recommend getting Oracle Linux (http://eDelivery.oracle.com/linux) because the default install includes all the prerequisite RPM packages you will need. And failing that, also offers another RPM package "oracle-validated" which will cause the installation of the necessary prerequisites.
But... you mentioned customer: if this is a revenue-producing situation and customer money is at stake, I strongly recommend they obtain commercial O/S support with either Oracle, Red Hat, or maybe SuSE/Novell. Compared to the cost of a downed business, an O/S support arrangement is cheap, cheap, cheap.
    2) is there any virtual enviornment available for Linux Os on which I can install 10g Express Edition database ?Sure. You can run Oracle VirtualBox on most Linux, Windows, or Solaris boxes. http://VirtualBox.org for info.
    3) If available, is there any difference in using the Linux Os in Virtual enviornment and actual installing Linux ? will there be any difference in installing database and configuration for both the cases? No real differences in either environment.
