Installing Oracle 10g on OEL 5U4
Hello,
I'm learing all what I can about Linux + Oracle
I have a questions that I need a simple answers (if possible)
I'm setting up a Linux Server with 8GB RAM Dual CPU for test and learning on a VM server (just for test as I said)
I got OEL 5U4 and I know that the swap partition should be in my case 8GB (i'm using 8GB RAM)
is it better to have it on it's own disk or just expand the partition?
what about the Oracle installation? should i give it it's own Disk?
I know i'm running any way on a VM but I Want to simulate an installation method (procedure) that can be used in production.
if everything will be OK, then at work we may move our servers to Linux (from Windows)
in windows we install Oracle to drive D: instead of C: for many reasons (I do not know why honestly, but my seniors has a good reasons!).
should I have the same approach in Linux?
I know I have to add some lines to */etc/sysctl.conf* to tune the kernel for Oracle, is there something more ?
any good example/tutorials for a simple Linux + Oracle installation (no ASM, no RAC), this will be my next step later
cheers
Whew, what a lot of questions at once :)
1) Certainly any swap partition or file needs to be on a local drive. It's
speed does not matter all that much because you will not be using it very
much. Anytime your database causes heavy paging, you have a configuration
problem.
2) It is a good idea to make */opt* a separate partition to isolate it from the
O/S files. Then if you need to reinstall the O/S, your RDBMS setup does not
get erased. If this is just a learning setup, you are not likely to do
this, so you can make a separate partition if you want to, but either way is
fine for this situation.
3) In general, keep the defaults. That way your setup matches the
documentation :) Unless you have a good reason that you cannot, keep the
defaults. It is simpler.
4) Using a SAN for the RDBMS files is a common technique.
5) What matters most in performance is how your server connects to the SAN. If
you use iSCSI, you'll want to use multiple Ethernet NIC's in a bonded
configuration. If you use a host-bus adapter (HBA), then you get what you
pay for, if you get anything at all.
6) After you have Linux installed, get the oracle-validated RPM package.
That will make sure you have the prerequisite packages to install the RDBMS.
In addition, it makes the common tuning adjustments for you.
Hope this helps. Cheers!

Error while installing Oracle 10G on Oracle Enterprise Linux 4.8 32 bit
Our machine is a x86_64 machine with 32 GB of RAM available. I have installed OEL 4.8 32 bit on this machine (configured swap space of 32 GB) and OEL by default boots with the Hugemem kernel.
I am trying to install Oracle 10G enterprise edition on this. All required kernel parameters, shell limits etc. have been verified and configured. The preinstallation checks succeed on all the tests and installation proceeds smoothly. However in the last step of configuring the database using dbca following two errors are thrown:
1. ORA-27102 - out of memory
2. ORA-01034 - ORACLE not found
Most places where I am reading are telling to configure kernel parameters. However that doesn't seem to be the problem in this case.
Please Help.Hi;
What is exact db version? What installation log says?
Please see and confirm you have all pre-req settings

Plz find some solution for the above problem.Hi
Here's the resolution that can work for you:
Disable the "Print Spooler" service before running the installer.
1.Open Control Panel: Start --> Settings --> Control Panel
2.Double-click "Services"
3.On the list of NT Services, right-click "Print Spooler"
4.Select "Stop"
5.Select "Properties"
6.Under Startup Type, select "manual" or "disabled"
7.Reboot your NT Server
8.After rebooting, verify that the Print Spooler is still "stopped".
9.Delete Program Files\Common Files\Installshield\Engine folder
10.Re-run the installer.
11.After installation, re-set the Print Spooler service to Startup type "Automatic" and start the service.
Also, have a look at the installshield page: http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108167

Error message when installing Oracle 10g on Windows XP Professional
Hello,
I need help installing oracle 10g database. When I attempt to run the installation from the setup.exe icon, I get a message that says
"Error in writing to directory C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\OraInstall2007-04-29_01-19-29PM. Please ensure this directory is writable and has atleast 45Mb of disk space. Installation cannot continue."
When I try to open the installation from the Autorun icon, it points to an innability to find setup.exe and when I go back to Setup.exe, it gives me the above error. Everytime I try to run the installation and it fails, the installation leaves a folder in my Temp folder with the above format. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.I do have administrative privilege on my computer and I have plenty of space. I have 80gb of free space. What do I do to successfully install the software without incurring those messages I displayed in my first thread?

Repeated ORA-12547 Messages after installing Oracle 10g
Hi,
I installed Oracle 10g on a Redhat ES 3 box, and the install went okay, but when I try and interact with the server I get the message:
ORA-12547: TNS: lost contact
For example, if I use the Database Configuration Assistant to attempt to create a database, I will see the above message when it begins the database creation process, or if I try to interact with the Oracle server using sqlplus I will see the above message after each command entered.
I had recently tried to install Oracle 8.1.7 on the same box, but abandoned that after deciding that the effort required to link Oracle 8 on RHES3 just wasn't worth it. I have been told that this previous partial installation may be the cause of the problem, and have been advised to uninstall Oracle 8, uninstall Oracle 10g, and reinstall Oracle 10g. I find it hard to believe that it would require such an action to solve this problem. Is there any configuration changes I can make to resolve it? Also, what does this message actually mean?
I am new to Oracle, so thanks for any help with this problem.
Colm.My last message asking for a grater degree of specificity was not overly specific, hence I am posting the kernel parms that I have set with the hopes that you will spot one that I set improperly or one that I neglected to set.

How can i install oracle 10g on linux cluster
Dear all:
please advice How can i install oracle 10g on linux cluster service ..
thanks ,,Without RAC, you can only have one instance manage the database. One instance = one set of processes communicating via IPC.
Unless you know of a way to have processes use memory-based IPC across nodes, you need to pick a node and install & run the database software on that node. -

Installing Oracle 10g release 2 on RHEL4
I am new with Linux and Oracle, and I have been assigned to install Oracle 10g Rel 2 in RHEL4 OS.
I have checked and installed missing RPM's and created group users, passwd, configered Kernel, set Shell limits and finally created directories on root as so,
mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle
chown -R oracle:oinstall/u01/app/oracle
chmod -R 775 /u01/app/oracle
After, I mount the CD on root
mount /media/cdrom
After mounting is complete i enter into oracle user and do the following
su - oracle
cd /media/cdrom
./runInstaller
However, I receive the following message : Olite installation requires ORACLE_HOME to be set. PLease set it and retry again.
So I set the following like so,
export ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle
export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle
export ORACLE_SID= demo1
./runInstaller
I than get the following message.
Olite installation requires JAVA13_HOME to be set. PLease set it JDK 1.4.1 install area and rety again.
I am not sure what JAVA13_HOME is but I am wondering if it is related to some Mobile sync. Also, could somebody help me and advise if I am going in the right direction here?
Many thanks in advance.
AlexHi Alex
Can you please control that ?
JAVA13_HOME will be the location for your JAVA home. You can check the path for your java installtion, either 1.3 or 1.4 and set the path accordingly. Usually in Linux the path will be some thing like /local/java/jdk1.4.2.
TNS_ADMIN should point to $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
Please read that also http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28928_01/doc/server.103/b28924/preinstall.htm
Let us know if it helps you.
