Installing Oracle 8.1.7 on Linux RedHat 7.1

I am trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 on a Linux RedHat 7.1 machine with P4 1.7GHz. I 've tryed all the papers I found on the net for setting the user accounts and groups, linking with the old gcc libraries, etc. The problem is that after starting the OUI and when a window pops-up that spans the products list available, the whole operation finishes too quicly without reaching the 100%. At the next screen when I am trying to give the Instalation Unix group - should be oinstall/dba - I press next and get the message "Unable to setup Inventory. You may not have proper permisions". The machine has 256MBs Ram and 520MB Swap file on a 20GB HDD.Has anyone else seen this before? I couldn't find anything on the net. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance...

Hi,
In the user where you are trying to install Oracle, give the following command at the prompt.
$ umask
The result should be "022". If it is not, connect as root and change the umask-settings of the user.
$ umask 022 <user-name>
and connect as the user, where you are trying to install and run the Installer.
Hope this will work,
Murali.

Installation halts while configuring Net Confugration Assistant....
    Any workaround ???
    Thanks in advance.

There are many versions of RedHat. Your post indicates you are using one of them, but your post really does not give a hint as to which one. Funny thing is - different versions have different install requirements.
I really don't understand why operating system version is such a big secret. Especially since it is logically so critical to installation issue. Even when installing on Windows, the first questions is 'which Windows'.
You have, of course, followed the suggestions at http://www.puschitz.com and noted the errors and workarounds, have you not.

  • The problem of installing oracle database 9.2.0 on Redhat 7.2

    Hi, there,
I meet an error when I want to run runInstaller to install oracle database 9.2.0 on Redhat 7.2 at the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant step:
    ORA-03113:end-of-file on communication channel.
the installer report every other things are installed successfully except Database Configuration Assistant. but after I try to connect to database using sqlplus:
    sqlplus /nolog
    connect / as sysdba
after a very long responding time, there is an interior error. I don't know how to fix it. do I need reinstall the oracle or mannully configure the database? how to do that? my machine is P2 266 with 128M memory. the harddisk is 30GB. I don't know if this problem is caused by memory limitation?
besides, who knows any other forums or website about oracle database installed on linux? I found there is very limit resource about this content on oarcle website.
any hint will be great appreciated!

It could be because of the memory. Oracle 9.x requires 512 MB minimum on Linux. Also the only Red Hat Oracle is now supporting is Advanced Server. But there are workarounds.
There is an excellent web site for installing Oracle on Linux, but it has been down for the last week or two. But try it maybe next week:

  • Install oracle 8.1.7 on linux 9.0

I want to install oracle 8.1.7 on linux 9.0,but where I run ./Disk1/runInstaller,show a error like 'symbol errno, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 where link time reference (libzip.so)
Unable to initialize threads:cannot find class java/lang/Thread
    Could not create Java VM'
use rpm ,I discover my glibc's version is:glibc-2.3.2-11.9
    Who can help me?
    thank you.

    I have seen this before.
    Quick Fix:
The problem with files still named xxxxxO is caused by the install. Sometimes it
works to just copy the file in this case:
    $cp lsnrctlO lsnrctl
There are probably other files that were not renamed by the install:
Finally, the listener can run! yipee.. :)
It failed to run because there're some file 'missing'.
I told u before, lsnrctl didn't exist in my box. Well, I found that not only lnsrctl.
There're three more files needed to be renamed. So, total in the list are
    dbsnmp, lsnrctl, tnslsnr, and oratclsh.
All of them still have their odd xxxxO name (I should have known it from
    the start).
Once I copied all the file to their 'proper' name, the listener can start
successfully. (Though i think the listener need only lsnrctl and tnslsnr,
    i still renamed them all).
But I wonder, why does the installer not rename those files?
I found that those file were created normally during installation, until
    i run setup_stubs.sh.
Is there any bug on setup_stubs.sh? Why you didn't experience it as I did?
However, the most important things is, the database running well :)

Oracle is NOT certified on RedHat 9, only on RedHat AS 2.1. It is possible to make it work though. Refer to the following web site which has a very good list of problems and work arounds for installing Oracle on RedHat:

  • Oracle Forms (Support & Certification) on Linux RedHat AS 4.0 (Intel 32bit)

    Hello,
Does anybody know for sure if Oracle is certifying Forms (part of Application Server 10.1.2.2) on Linux RedHat AS 4.0 (Intel 32 bit). We are trying to move from v3.0 to v.4.0, however without Oracle support, that might not happen.
Any help or guidance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Kunal Bansal

I did search in Metalink indeed. This document is really the latest certification they have. But funny thing is that the rda.sh script Oracle released checks for RH4 in addition to RH3. I have my test iAS server (10.1.2.0.2) and iDS (same version) installed on RH 3 (just in case) but I have installed iAS server in 2 different places (for deployment) on RH 4 - both went just fine. I know there is a document on Metalink, explaining how to install on RH 4 - basically, they released a small patch set for those who wants to install on RH 4. I did apply that patchset (it is for OUI not for the forms). My quick solution to implement this patchset was to create a staging directory (disk1, ...) and then replace couple of files located under disk1 staging directory with the files that comes with the patchset (unzipped into a separate place), then start the installation of 10.1.2.0.2 on RH 4. Everything then went just perfect on RH 4. No problems reported so far (2 separate installations on 2 separate sites on RH 4). I don't know if this helps but just wanted to provide some feedback.

  • How can i install Oracle 9i Enterprise version on Linux 7.2

    Hi friends,
I m not able to install the oracle 9i enterprise DBA on RedHat linux 7.2. Can anybody guide me how to do it in correct way. Cuz i feel that i m not doing in right way and there is someother way of doing it ?
    Thanks in advance
    Manmeet Sidhu

I know this isn't a RedHat admin forum...but one of the most important things is an up2date set of system packages. It is my opinion that the RedHat Network Updater (up2date) should always be used to keep your kernel, bin-utils, glibc, gcc, etc files up2date...they fix issues all the time that help in relinking (making) files, as well as fixing security problems and increasing platform security.
That said, the version of bin-utils, glibc, kernel and gcc that I have installed Oracle 9i release 1 on RedHat 7.2 is:
    kernel-2.4.9-31
    binutils-2.11.90.0.8-12
    glibc-2.2.4-24
    gcc-2.96-98
Here is the documentation I followed:
    http://www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle9i.html
and here is a good discussion thread on an installation:
    http://www.orafaq.com/msgboard/unix/messages/821.htm
I did not (and do not) recommend downgrading the bin-utils ... just update the $ORACLE_HOME/bin/genclntsh file and relink...
Also, if installing Oracle 9i Release 2 on RedHat 7.3, see this thread concerning the ins_ctx.mk error

  • Installing oracle 10g xe edition on linux

    Hi,
I am trying to install oracle 10g xe edition on redhat linux. By default the oracle database rpm package uses /usr/lib partition for installation files. Is it possible to install the oracle database files in /export partition instead of default location /usr/lib?
    Thanks
    Kapil

There are a few differrent 'RedHat Linuxes' ... could you be a bit more specific.
But ... the default answer is 'no'. Several of us have used various workarounds, including creating a special link from /usr/lib/oracle to /export/oracle and the like.
I installed in /usr/lib and after successful installation I created a special link, copied everything to the new target, and have had no problems at all.
Others have used other techniques with success. INcluding the one by cd - tweak the install script.
