Installing Oracle 8i 8.1.5 on RedHat 5.1

Hello,
1) All I should need to do to start the Installer is:
a) Download JRE 1.1.6 v5 from blackdown
b) Create a link to jre/bin/jre as /usr/local/jre
c) Run the installer ./runInstaller
2) Nothing happens after doing the above, do I need to have jdk
1.1.6 installed?
3) Can someone please list the exact steps they followed?
4) Does this release of Oracle run on Redhat 6.0?
regards and thanks,
Ahbaid.

I tried the same thing and had no end of problems. I took the
following steps:
1) Use Redhat 6.0
2) Install the glibc patches (upgrades the compiler to version
2.95.1 I think)
3) If you are using Enlightenment as your graphical environment,
you need to install the patch for Enlightenment (download it
from the Redhat site)
4) Install Oracle - when you execute runInstaller, you have to
be in an X environment as the installer is graphical.
5) If this works OK, then you need to install the Oracle patches
if there are any to install.
Hope this helps.

  • Unable to install Oracle 9.0.1 on Linux RedHat

    Hi,
I am unable to install Oracle 9.0.1 on Linux RedHat, tried many times. While installing i get following errors-
"Error in invoking target install of makefile
    /usr/oracle/9.0.1/plsql/lib/ins-plsql.mk"
"error in invoking target ioracle of makefile
    /usr/oracle/9.0.1/rdbms/lib/ins-rdbms.mk"
"Error loading native library : libnjni.so"
Installation halts while configuring Net Confugration Assistant....
    Any workaround ???
    Thanks in advance.

There are many versions of RedHat. Your post indicates you are using one of them, but your post really does not give a hint as to which one. Funny thing is - different versions have different install requirements.
I really don't understand why operating system version is such a big secret. Especially since it is logically so critical to installation issue. Even when installing on Windows, the first questions is 'which Windows'.
You have, of course, followed the suggestions at http://www.puschitz.com and noted the errors and workarounds, have you not.
Especially about things like packages and versions.

  • The problem of installing oracle database 9.2.0 on Redhat 7.2

    Hi, there,
I meet an error when I want to run runInstaller to install oracle database 9.2.0 on Redhat 7.2 at the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant step:
    ORA-03113:end-of-file on communication channel.
the installer report every other things are installed successfully except Database Configuration Assistant. but after I try to connect to database using sqlplus:
    sqlplus /nolog
    connect / as sysdba
after a very long responding time, there is an interior error. I don't know how to fix it. do I need reinstall the oracle or mannully configure the database? how to do that? my machine is P2 266 with 128M memory. the harddisk is 30GB. I don't know if this problem is caused by memory limitation?
besides, who knows any other forums or website about oracle database installed on linux? I found there is very limit resource about this content on oarcle website.
any hint will be great appreciated!

It could be because of the memory. Oracle 9.x requires 512 MB minimum on Linux. Also the only Red Hat Oracle is now supporting is Advanced Server. But there are workarounds.
There is an excellent web site for installing Oracle on Linux, but it has been down for the last week or two. But try it maybe next week:

Oracle is NOT certified on RedHat 9, only on RedHat AS 2.1. It is possible to make it work though. Refer to the following web site which has a very good list of problems and work arounds for installing Oracle on RedHat:

  • Installing Oracle 8.1.7 on Linux RedHat 7.1

I am trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 on a Linux RedHat 7.1 machine with P4 1.7GHz. I 've tryed all the papers I found on the net for setting the user accounts and groups, linking with the old gcc libraries, etc. The problem is that after starting the OUI and when a window pops-up that spans the products list available, the whole operation finishes too quicly without reaching the 100%. At the next screen when I am trying to give the Instalation Unix group - should be oinstall/dba - I press next and get the message "Unable to setup Inventory. You may not have proper permisions". The machine has 256MBs Ram and 520MB Swap file on a 20GB HDD.Has anyone else seen this before? I couldn't find anything on the net. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance...

    Hi,
In the user where you are trying to install Oracle, give the following command at the prompt.
    $ umask
The result should be "022". If it is not, connect as root and change the umask-settings of the user.
    $ umask 022 <user-name>
and connect as the user, where you are trying to install and run the Installer.
    Hope this will work,
    Murali.

  • Error in installing oracle 8i(8.1.5) on Redhat 7.0

when I run ./runInstaller from cdrom
    I give this messages :
Initializing Java Virtual Machine from /usr/local/jre/bin/jre.Please wait ...
    Error in CreateOUIProcess ():-1
    : Bad Address

I have tried all the fixes in the newsgroup..
ie,manually copying $ORACLE_HOME\bin files, compat fix from

Can somebody please writeup a "detailed HOWTO" to do

I'm almost on the verge of switching over to NT because

  • Oracle 8.0.5.1 on Redhat 7.2

I installed Oracle 8.0.5.1 on RedHat 7.2. To make it work I forced the installation of compat-glibc 5.2, compat-libs 5.2, and compat-egcs 5.2. So far everything is working normally. I tried to recompile these packages, but with no success. What would be be the worst thing that could happen to my system with this kind of an installation ?
Is there a proper way to install Oracle 8.0.5.1 on RedHat 7.2 ?

Do you think running an upgrade from RH5.1 to RH6.0 will require
any modifications to the existing Oracle installation?

    : Well. Good new !

    : 1. Install Oracle 8 on a machine with redhat 5 and glibc 2.0.7
: 2. copy everything in the same directory on the other machine

  • NumberFormatException error on dbassist when installing oracle 8.1.6

I'm trying to install oracle 8.1.6 on a RedHat 6.1 machine. The installation finishes without any problems. Then I try to create a new database using the dbassist program. It all goes well until the end: I select "Save information to a text script" and click Finish. Then I give the program the file name where I want to save the script to and I get the following error:
    Exception occurred during event dispatching:
    java.lang.NumberFormatException: 32%
    at java.lang.Long.parseLong(Compiled Code)
I double-checked every field I entered on the program and there was no "32%" anywhere, so I think the problem could be somewhere else.
Has anyone ran into this problem? Any ideas on how to solve it?
    Thanks.

The best documentation of an install (although it entails using the the custom database defined) is from ArsDigita. If you go to http://www.arsdigita.com/ad-training/acs-install/oracle and follow those instructions (exempting the custom database if desired) you will have Oracle auto start shutdown, back itself up, etc. etc. It is a very professional doc and I ran through it without any errors. Good luck

  • HELP! Can not install Oracle 8.1.5 w/ RedHat 6.1!

I can not get Oracle 8.1.5 to install onto Linux RedHat 6.1. The
Oracle installation script generates several errors. I have
tried several attempts, using different options, but they all
    generate errors.
Please help. The Oracle Installation scripts appear to be very
buggy... or perhaps they are incompatible with the standard
RedHat 6.1 release. Either way, it is very frustrating.
I have documented one of my (failed) installation attempts below.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom?
I am installing Oracle onto a Dell Latitude CPi PC w/ 128MB RAM,
a 366MHz Pentium II, and RedHat 6.1 (using the standard Linux
2.2.12-2 kernel). RedHat was installed using the standard "Gnome
    Workstation" configuration.
    The Oralce CD is labeled:
    "Oralce 8i Enterprise Edition
    Release 8.1.5
    for Linux
    (c) Oracle Corporation 1999"
I got this CD about one week ago at Oracle OpenWorld '99 in Los
Angeles... it should be their "latest & greatest" version so far.
    1. Pre-Installation and ./runInstall
I created an "oracle" Unix account w/ groups "oinstall" (the
primary group) and "dba" (a secondary group).
I created directories /u01 through /u04, belonging to oracle.
I setup .cshrc and sourced it, containing:
    umask 022
    setenv DISPLAY `hostname`:0
    xhost +
    setenv ORACLE_BASE /u01/app/oracle
    setenv ORACLE_HOME ${ORACLE_BASE}/product/8.1.5
    setenv ORACLE_SID cprtest
    setenv PATH ${ORACLE_HOME}/bin:${PATH}
    setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH ${ORACLE_HOME}/lib
    setenv NLS_LANG US7ASCII
    I downloaded jre116_v5 and installed to /usr/local/jre.
Finally, I executed (from the "oracle" Unix account):
    cd /mnt/cdrom
    ./runInstall
Problem: I got the error (from ./runInstall):
Initializing Java Virtual Machine from /usr/local/jre/bin/jre.
    Please wait...
    Error in CreateOUIProcess(): -1
    : Bad address
Workaround: Executed the following commands instead:
    cd /mnt/cdrom/install/linux
    ./runIns.sh
    3. runIns.sh and root.sh
I selected the following options (from ./runIns.sh):
    Source: /mnt/cdrom/stage/products.jar
    Destination: /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5
    Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition 8.1.5.0.0
    Typical (585MB)
Installable Components: Oralce Intelligent Agent 8.1.5.0.0
    Global Database Name: cprtest.parkrussell.com
    SID: cprtest
    Directory for Database Files: /u02
Then (when instructed by ./runIns.sh), I attempted to execute
    (from the
    "root" Unix account):
    cd /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5
    ./root.sh
    Problem: I got the error:
    "bash: ./root.sh: Permission denied"
The execute bit was not set.
    Workaround: I executed:
    chmod a+x root.sh
    ./root.sh
    5. Configuration Tools
The Oracle Installer (./runIns.sh) attempted to execute:
    A. Net8 Configuration Agent
    B. Oracle Database Configuration Agent
Problem: The "Oracle Database Configuration Agent" failed with
    the following error message:
"One or more tools have failed. It is recommended but not
required that these tools succeed for this installation.
You can now select these tools, read its details to examine
why they have failed, fix those problems, and retry them.
Or, you can click "Next" to continue."
When I selected the "Oracle Database Configuration Agent" for
more info, I got the following additional details (as the cause
    of the error):
"A required command line argument is missing."
    The log file
    "/u01/app/oracle/oraInventory/logs/installActions.log" recorded:
"Command which is being spawned is /usr/local/jre/bin/jre
    -Duser.dir=/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/assistants/dbca/jlib

Invalid Exit Code. The following result code will be used for

    failed"
Workaround: There is obviously nothing I can do to fix this
problem. It appears to be an internal bug in ./runIns.sh.
Therefore, I selected "Next" and executed "dbassist" directly.
    6. dbassist
    I executed:
    dbassist
Problem: I got the following error:
    "JNLS Execution:oracle.ntpg.jnls.JNLSException
Unable to find any National Character Sets. Please
    check your Oracle installation."
Workaround: Press "OK" and ignore the error.
    7. dbassist (cont.)
    I selected the following options:
    Create database
    Typical
Copy existing database files from the CD
    Global Database Name: cprtest.parkrussell.com
    SID: cprtest
Problem: I got the following error:
"CD-ROM drive not detected on this system.
    Database not created."
(Note: I've been running the installation scripts from the
CDROM drive this entire time. "df" shows the CDROM drive
mounted on /mnt/cdrom. "ls /mnt/cdrom" works too.)
Workaround: Abort (which generated the additional error: "Unable
to create database. DBCA-00003: No CD-ROM drive detected.") and
run dbassist again, this time using different parameters.
    8. dbassist, again
I executed "dbassist" again and selected the following options:
    Create database
    Typical
    Create new database files
    Hybrid
    Concurrently connected users: 5
Options: Oralce interMedia, Oralce JServer, and iM demos
    Global Database Name: cprtest2.parkrussell.com
    SID: cprtest2
    Create database now
Problem: I got the following error:
    "ORA-01012: not logged on"
    Workaround: Try, try again.
    9. dbassist, one last time
Executed "dbassist" once more and selected the following options:
    Create database
    Typical
    Create new database files
    Hybrid
    Concurrently connected users: 5
Options: Oralce interMedia, Oralce JServer, and interMedia
    demos
    Global Database Name: cprtest3.parkrussell.com
    SID: cprtest3
    Output creation script
Then, I executed (from the "oracle" Unix account):
    cd /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/install
    setenv ORACLE_SID cprtest3
    ./sqlcprtest3.sh
Problem: I got the following output:
"Oracle Server Manager Release 3.1.5.0.0 - Production

    SVRMGR> Disconnected."
    Workaround: Beats me.
    10. sqlplus
I attempted to execute sqlplus, but got the following error
    message:
    "/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/bin/sqlplus: Permission denied."
The execute bit was not set.
    Workaround: I executed:
    chmod a+x /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/bin/sqlplus
    sqlplus
I gave up for now... there were just too many things wrong with
this installation, starting with the very first command I was
    supposed to execute (./runInstaller).
I can't fathom why Oracle's installation script has so many bugs.
Am I just doing something terribly wrong?
    Please help.

I'm using enlightenment version 0.15.5-41, which is more recent
than the 0.15.5-37 version (containing the Oracle installer
patch) that you recommended. Unfortunately, it fails when using
    this version.
I also tried installing Oracle using twm, with enlightenment
    disabled. This didn't help either.
Furthermore, the errors that I'm encountering in the OUI are
not just toward the end of the installation. They happen from
the very beginning, right after I enter "./runInstall", and
continue every step of the way.
