When i followed the same procedure in RHEL 3.0 it goes smooth till applying patch glibc2.1.3_stub.tgz but thereafter when i try to create db using dbassist it gives me error like :
ORA-12545 Connect failed because target host or object does not exist.
Even if i tried to run svrmgrl it gives me error

Could anyone help me in resolving that ? the same installation procedure works well for Redhat 8.0/9.0

DBCA calls svrmgrl.exe in order to make a startup nomount of the new database and svrmgrl.exe fails during the hostname resolution.
Try to give ipaddress rather than hostname in the tnsnames.ora file.

What version of gcc are you using?
Check out this link: http://www.redhat.com/archives/taroon-list/2004-June/msg00030.html
All 8i and 9i releases are built with 2.9x versions of gcc, so you might have to downgrade gcc in order to get 8i running.

OUI error installing Oracle 10g on RHEL 3 (Taroon update 2)

Hi. I trying to install Oracle 10.1.0.3 on RHEL 3 (Taroon update 2). I followed the guide http://www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle10g.shtml. Quick install guide too.
My server is Dell PowerEdge 2850. And i did all requirements, enviroments. RHEL 3 is fresh and updated via RHN.
But when i run ./runInstaller occurs following error:

Installing Oracle RAC10gR2 on RHEL 4

Hi All,
I have installed Oracle RAC 10gR2 on RHEL 4 using ASM. I had two documents with two difference procedures in configuring ASM. I have setup the RAC environment using both the methods.
Method 1:

In this method, they have performed the following:
1. Configured Oracle ASM
2. Configured OCFS2
3. Installed Oracle Clusterware
4. Installed Oracle Database
5. Created a new database using DBCA
Method 2:

In this method, they have performed the following:
1. Installed Oracle Clusterware
2. Installed Database software and created ASM Instance.

In Method 2, we are not configuring Oracle ASM and OCFS2. I'm really confused about which is the correct method to follow. Is it a must to configure OCFS2? What is the difference between both the methods? It would be greatly helpful if some one can help me out in this.

both methods will work, but are different in the goal you want to achieve. But since your are trying on VMware I would strongly suggest you try out 11.2, since a lot has changed there as well and 10gR2 is nearing its end of life, so if you want to educate yourself you better start with 11.2
Even more so, since the 11.2 installation guide has a very clear distinguation between "storage option" which probably explains the most of your questions:

Even though you may also want to look in the 10g documentation exactly this chapter was not so good as in 11.2
O.k now to your question:
Even though in RHEL 5 RAW is desupported (which is correct), it still does not mean the written installation itself is not usefull. Since 10.2.0.2 (and especially with 11g) you can directly install on the so called block device. Which would be a pretty similar installation, except for the steps to configure RAW.
So the real question remains, should someone install OCFS2 additionally or not?
Now this depends on the use case.
If you only want to run Oracle Real Application Cluster, I strongly recommend against using OCFS2, for the following reasons:
=> You will actually have 2 clusterwares installed (Oracle clusterware and the clustware part of OCFS2). That said, you have more overhead and there is the possibility that OCW decides to kick out node 1 and OCFS2 kicks out node 2 at the same time. O.k. there are steps to configure that correctly, however if you can avoid it, why care?
=> Performance: ASM is the recommended storage for all database files.
In which cases do you (or better did you) use OCFS2:
=> If you had other applications, which needed to be placed on a shared filesystem. Since ASM itself cannot be as easily handles as a normal filesystem.
=> If you had administrative restrictions, which needed to have the database on a filesystem.
However with 11.2 even these 2 restrictions have gone, since Oracle introduced the ASM cluster filesystem (ACFS). which sits on top of ASM.
Hope I could clarify that a bit.

Display Problem while installing Oracle 10g on RHEL 5

All,
I'm in the process of installing Oracle 10g R2 on RHEL4, when i'm trying to issue ./runInstaller i'm getting the below error.
I could get the xclock on the host, even then i'm getting below display error, could any one please help me to resolve this ?

Are you running from the same terminal or connecting remotely?
If connecting remotely, you need a Xserver running on the client machine.

Problem when installing oracle 10g on RHEL-4

greetings,
i have been trying to install oracle 10g on my linux machine for the past 10 days, everytimje i do all the steps and change the kernel parameters but when i start the runinstaller file. i get the folloeing error.
I don't know what this error is or why is it happening

Hi,
You got these errors because runInstaller can not start the GUI. There are 2 solutions, you can choose one:
1. logout Gnome/Kde, login as oracle user, and run runInstaller again.
2.open a new root terminal,
a) run "xhost +" as root.
b) run "su - oracle" switch to oracle
c) run "export DISPLAY=:0.0"
d) then run "./runInstaller" again.

Ora10g also cannot connect earily ora8, that's mean if I want upgrade to Ora10g I must drop the earily application which having connect other earily oradb such as 8.0.5, however not every company want upgrade, so they also force us using the earily oradb,unless rebuild the application mode.

Installing Oracle 9206 on RHEL 5 32 bit hangs

We are struck up Oracle 9.2.0.6 installtion on RHEL 5 (32 bit).
It struck up with 17 % while copying naeet.o file .. Installtion process hangs.
We cannot able to proceed further ..
Please advice . .
(We cannot go for Oracle 10g as the application Supports Oracle 9i series, )

It comes to my attention you have mentioned the 10.2.0.3.0 version, it doesn't exist as a full product installation media. It only exists this way for the windows Vista platform; so most probably you are talking about the 10.2.0.3.0 patchset, which cannot be installed alone, it must be installed on top of an existing 10.2.0.X.0 oracle home.
You can see it at the OTN download area, the only complete media is 10.2.0.1.0 for Linux-x86/x64 and Itanium.

Need Oracle 10gR2 on RHEL 5 on zLinux (s390x) software

I want to install Oracle 10gR2 on RHEL 5 on zLinux (s390x)
I could get only one for zlinux (10202_zlinux_database.zip ) in oracle site.
However, this is only for redhat linux -3 , -4
when i try to run runInstaller. it thrown the below error

Installing Oracle 11g R2 on RHEL 5.9 server

Hi,
    I've been trying to install Oracle 11g R2 on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.9 server but have not succeeded thus far. The server meets all the software and hardware requirements for Oracle 11g Release 2 and when it also has all the prerequisite packages/ RPM's on it, when checked manually. I have set up the various kernel, semaphore and local port range parameters in accordance with the Oracle guides for installing Oracle on RHEL 5. I also followed the online guides to create the "oracle" user and set up the groups (oinstall, dba, oper and asm).
    However, when I run the installer, it shows "Failed" for all the prerequisite checks. I tried to ignore this and install Oracle but it failed at 37% and gave multiple errors, related to invoking target 'XYZ' of different files including makefile and gcc.
     I suspect that either the installer is unable to detect these packages as they already exist on our server or it is something to do around permissions to the groups. I read on these forums that it might be because of a "cvu" folder created inside /tmp that requires '777' permission but am not sure if that's what's causing our installation to fail.
     Please let me know how to proceed with the installation and guide me through this.

Hi, its Oracle 11g R2 - 2.0.3.6 .
The O.S is Linux x86_64
server: RHEL 5.9 (Takinga) with kernel: 2.6.18
I've been working on this all day today and have managed to overcome the errors regarding the missing/ failed packages. I've also verified that my kernel parameters are correct; I had missed the kernel shmmni parameter yesterday.
The installer now detects all the packages & runs till 86% when it gives the error: "error invoking target client_sharedlib of makefile".
Kindly let me know how to proceed. Thanks in advance !
