Installing Oracle 9i on Solaris 10 SPARC,  /etc/system vs. projects

Can anyone verify that the kernel tuning parameters that used to be set in /etc/system on Solaris 8 have any effect in Solaris 10? All the documentation I can find suggests that most (if not all) of these settings have been marked obsolete or removed in Solaris 10. It is my understanding that these settings (such as shared memory) need to be set by means of a project. If we are running with no project setup in Solaris 10 are we pretty much running "untuned" ? Thanks

We have carried over the following parameters from /etc/system on our old Solaris 8 DB servers. We just want to know if these settings are having any effect. We are currently seeing some performance issues on T5220's with 32GB RAM (old DB servers were SunFire 4800's).

Check also if the t-bit is set:
    [root@vtl1g121 ~]# ls -dl /tmp
    drwxrwxrwt 11 root root 4096 Apr 10 11:44 /tmp
This is needed to mark the filesystem/directory as temporary.

  • ORA-27102: out of memory. Faild to install oracle 10gR2 on Solaris 10

Hi, I want to install oracle on my solaris machine. I have 2.5G RAM and more than 5G swap file. But the ORA-27102: out of memory error occurred at installing the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant step(Copying database files Creating and starting Oracle instance).
    The only warnings bellow:
    Checking kernel parameters
Checking for BIT_SIZE=64; found BIT_SIZE=64. Passed
Checking for shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295; found no entry. Failed <<<<
Checking for shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=100; found no entry. Failed <<<<
Checking for semsys:seminfo_semmni=100; found no entry. Failed <<<<
Checking for semsys:seminfo_semmsl=256; found no entry. Failed <<<<
Check complete. The overall result of this check is: Failed <<<<
Problem: The kernel parameters do not meet the minimum requirements (see above).
What's the reason and how may I resolve it?
    Thanks!

I set some kernel parameters like: set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295 and so on. Restart the computer and run dbca+ and configure in advance mode. There's a stage require the size of flash_recover_segment of which the default size number is 2048M. WOW, out of memory on my pc of course.
So I think it's the parameter value during the installation progress bring on the ORA-27102 problem. However, during the first installation, there's no prompt for me to enter the parameter; or I didn't see.

  • Install oracle 10g on solaris 9 platform without setting noexec_user_stack

    Hi,
I'd like install oracle 10g software on solaris 2.9 platform without setting noexec_user_stack parameter to 1.
The problem is that i need install software before, for migrating product environment.
I can write /etc/system file but i can't reboot system until several days.
I will not start migration process until i reboot the system and parameter definitely set.
Do you know if we will can have any kind of problem???
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your answer FZheng. But i will just install software. I will not start any oracle 10g process until i reboot the machine.
I think that oracle software installacion should not be affected. Do you know if this parameter affect to compile softwere during OUI wizard progress???.
Before going on migration process and start database i will sure that this parameter is correctly fixed.
PD.: I couldn't read metalink reference that you've suggested becouse my metalink account have problem access in this momment. During all day i've been reeding metalinks docs without any problem until this momment, bad luck.
In test environment i've installed oracle without this parameter and i've never had any problem. But this installation is more important than others becouse i ask you in this specialist forum.
    Thanks again !!!

  • Installing Oracle on a solaris zone machine

    Hello
I assume this is a legitimate question now that Oracle bought Sun :)
I have a solaris zoned machine. On a normal Solaris machine, I edit several parametersd in /etc/system
what to do in case of zoned machine?
    thank you

Or you can check Oracle installation guide for Solaris
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b15690/pre_install.htm#sthref84
On Solaris 10, use the following procedure to view the current value specified for resource controls, and to change them if necessary:
    1.
To view the current values of the resource control, enter the following commands:
    # id -p // to verify the project id
    uid=0(root) gid=0(root) projid=1 (user.root)
    # prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project user.root
    # prctl -n project.max-sem-ids -i project user.root
    2.
If you must change any of the current values, then:
    1.
To modify the value of max-shm-memory to 6 GB:
    # prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -v 6gb -r -i project user.root
    2.
To modify the value of max-sem-ids to 256:
    # prctl -n project.max-sem-ids -v 256 -r -i project user.root

  • Installing Oracle 9i in Solaris 10

Can anyone help me in this matter.
    Thanks and Regards

    Thanks for your replies guys.
I successfully installed Oracle9i client in Solaris 10. Initially I had to set up the Kernel parameteres as Prajeevan has suggested. Later the installation was quite staright forward and same as for Linux server.
Thanks for giving your precious time for replying to my query.

Hi everybody, I got error messages below:
    ====================================================
    $ ./runInstaller

Checking operating system version: must be 5.6, 5.7, 5.8 or 5.9. Actual 5.10

Does that mean there is not Oracle 10g for Solairs 10 X86?
Where can I find Oracle 9i for Solairs x86?
    Thanks advance!

10g on Solaris 10 needs special handling:
    1. Execute runInstaller with the -ignoreSysPrereqs option.
    2. Select 'Do not create a starter database' when installing Oracle 10g.
    3. During installation, the warning message 'SUNWsprox package not installed' can be ignored. Press Continue to resume the installation.
    4. Download and install patch 4186426 from metalink.oracle.com after installing Oracle 10g software.
    5. If you have an End User Solaris 10 distribution, install the SUNWuiu8 package prior to installing the 10g client.

As a test, install the 32-bit JRE and run the FMw installer again. If it continues past this point - you've got the 32-bit installer and not the 64-bit installer. :)

  • Installing Oracle 9iDS on Solaris 8 with Oracle 9i DB already running

Current setup is some what like this. We have SunV440 Server and have Oracle 9i Database running on it. To install 9i DB we have created a user Oracle on OS Solaris8. Now we would like to install Oracle 9iDS (Developer Suite) and configure its Separate ORACLE_HOME directory, as 9iDS won't letus have it configured in the exisiting HOME. It is known that I have to stop all Oracle services and process, should I also stop listner that is running.
Please help me in detail steps involved and also if some OS files needs to be updated
    Thanks in anticipation for help

    Hello Chessplayer!
Before you attempt the Oracle install, make sure you have done the following as the Oracle CD does nothing but put down the Oracle binaries:
    1. Create /opt/app/oracle
    2. Put a .profile in /opt/app/oracle sourcing your Oracle_Home and Oracle_Sid.
    3. Create file systems (volumes) where database datafiles will go. If you are working
with a single disk, /vol01 is sufficient. However, you may want to create others to simulate
multiple disks and the concept of "spreading" your load ie. data from index.
    4. You may also want to create a /dumps file system for oracle dump files.
    Have fun.

  • Sd/ssd max throttle in solaris 10 etc/system

    Guru!
I need to add any of following lines to /etc/system file
for my new Hitachi storage (attached to the Soalris10 Box)
    setsd: sd_max_throttle = 16mm
    setssd:ssd_max_throttle =16
I want to know the difference between them and also how can I make sure that the parameter is added/active....?
    Owais Hyder.

    Hi.
    Be carefull when edit /etc/system
    Correct:
    set sd: sd_max_throttle = 16
    set ssd:ssd_max_throttle =16
    Reboot require for applay changes.
    For check current value:
    echo "sd_max_throttle /U" |mdb -k
    Docs:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26505_01/pdf/E37386.pdf
    ssd_max_throttle and sd_max_throttle parameters
define the maximum number of concurrent I/Os that the driver can send to the storage.
ssd - driver for FC disk
sd - driver for generic SCSI disk
