INSTALLING ORACLE 9i - RELEASE 2 (9.2.0.1.0) --- WRONG CD-KEYS

Hi, I have purchased this book(Database Systems, Design, Implementation & Management) from "Thompson Course Technology" by Peter Rob and Carlos Coronel. It contains a set of three (3) CDs all of which are Oracle Database - client & server for Microsoft windows. I inserted the FIRST Cd into my cd drive, which booted automatically but requested for a regisgistration key. I followed the links to oracle-dot-com where I obtained these keys (orcl9iwdws) and was told it's the key for the dvd rom in my cd drive. But when I entered the keys nothing seemed to be working. What else should I do?

I would contact Thompson, the manufacturer.
You don't need keys to install Oracle 9i... honestly, I would be learning on 10g. 9i will be sunset in June.
If you really want 9i, goto otn.oracle.com and click on downloads, scroll all the way down to the bottom and you will find it.

    There are a lot of cases where people have tried and failed to install on XP Home. Also a few successes.
    Also, how is your firewall and anti-virus software configured. Those may be blocking your install process.

  • Problem installing Oracle Linux Release 5 Update 2 from Oracle e-Delivery

    Hello
    I have been trying to install Oracle Linux Release 5 Update 2 from Oracle e-Delivery so that I can install Oracle 11g express edition beta.
    Here are the steps that I took and the problem that I am having:
    1. I downloaded the file, unzipped the file twice, which gave me 3,042 files and 13 folders with the total size = 3.07 GB.
    2. I put in the DVD and restarted my PC hoping that my PC will boot from the DVD, but instead Window started.
    I reported this issue to tech support from e-Delivery, but they referred me to contact you. Please assist.

    3,042 files and 13 folders with the total size = 3.07 GBWhich download .zip did you choose from edelivery? Under linux-x64 I peeked "Oracle Linux Release 5 Update 2 for x86_64 (64 Bit) - DVD" file V15099-01.zip downloaded, it has just the one .iso file. You'll need to burn that to DVD, but with burn s/w that handles ISO files.
    Also keep in mind you'll need 64 bit hardware (amd/intel 64? itanium? those are different), the only *nix platform I've got handy to try it out is -x86 :(

    I have another problem log in the SQL PLUS. When I open the SQL PLUS window, it asked for Username and after I typed "sys" or "system" and hit Enter; it was prompted for password, however, it did not let me type in any word; and after I hit Enter again, the error message " ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error" appeared
    Any hints would be apprecieted, thanks.
    SamIt wasn't preventing you from typing a password, it just wasn't echoing your keystrokes back to the screen. This is a security security feature common to most software, not just oracle. Either when asking for a password, either echo back a 'masking' character like '*' or don't echo anything. It's so common, I'm surprised you seem to have never seen it before.
    So after entering your password ... the 12560 probably comes from
    1- the fact you didn't have the environment variable ORACLE_SID set, so sqlplus didn' know the name of the instance/process you wanted to connect to, or
    2 - the windows service for the database was not started.
    Those two possibilities account for 99.99999 pct of ora-12560 on Windows installations.

    Hello Guys,
    I want to install Oracle® Database 10g Release 2 (10.2) for Linux x86-64 in RHEL 5

    My Machine is having 12GB RAM and it's 64bit machine.
    So please provide me steps that only relate to my oracle installation. I just want to do simple installation without database and my machine not have graphical interface also.

    So please people help me out... i am really thankful to you guys .....
    Thanks ,

    That also good idea man. thanks for your valuable advice.
    I have confusion here ...
    3. Changes to be made to Kernel parameters
    After installing above mentioned packages, we need to change some Kernel parameters and make them match to Oracle requirements. Parameters which should be changed are shown below
    shmmax     2147483648
    shmmni     4096
    shmall     2097152
    shmmin     1
    semmsl     250
    semmns     32000
    semopm     100
    semmni     128
    file-max     65536
    ip_local_port_range     1024 65000
    rmem_default     1048576
    rmem_max     1048576
    wmem_default     262144
    wmem_max     262144
    We do all these changes in the /etc/sysctl.conf file by adding these lines to that file:
    kernel.shmmax = 2147483648
    kernel.shmall = 2097152
    kernel.shmmni=4096
    kernel.sem=250 32000 100 128
    fs.file-max=65536
    net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range=1024 65000
    net.core.rmem_default=1048576
    net.core.rmem_max=1048576
    net.core.wmem_default=262144
    net.core.wmem_max=262144
    Question: What will be my value for this as my system is 64bit so this all parameter is ok if i put all straight ?
    ----> Setting Shell limits for the Oracle UserTo improve the performance of the software on Linux systems, you must increase the following shell limits for the oracle user:
    1. Add the following lines to /etc/security/limits.conf file
    oracle soft nproc 2047
    oracle hard nproc 16384
    oracle soft nofile 1024
    oracle hard nofile 65536
    2. Add the following lines to /etc/pam.d/login file
    session required /lib/security/pam_limits.so
    session required pam_limits.so
    3. In order to use Oracle Software, we need to make a change in “oracle” user’s buffer size and number of opened file descriptors. In order to do it, we add below lines to /etc/profile file
    if [ $USER = "oracle" ]; then
    if [ $SHELL = "/bin/ksh" ]; then
    ulimit -p 16384
    ulimit -n 65536
    else
    ulimit -u 16384 -n 65536
    fi

    Question: this things also i need to change ?

    Again ... did you EVER have any other Oracle product installed on the machine before you attempted this install?
    (If so, and you did, or attempted to, deinstall, you probably need to go through the registry by hand to remove the references. Be careful, though, as you could damage your machine.)

    Space aint an issue and dont know how to over come this error!
    Should ai just install the db using scripts and run the neccessary .sql scripts instead of going through dbca?
    junior DBA in distress.

    This appears to be because of low semaphores setting. Did you reboot your server after making the /etc/system parameter changes ?

  • Installing Oracle 10g release 2 on RHEL4

    I am new with Linux and Oracle, and I have been assigned to install Oracle 10g Rel 2 in RHEL4 OS.
    I have checked and installed missing RPM's and created group users, passwd, configered Kernel, set Shell limits and finally created directories on root as so,
    mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle
    chown -R oracle:oinstall/u01/app/oracle
    chmod -R 775 /u01/app/oracle
    After, I mount the CD on root
    mount /media/cdrom
    After mounting is complete i enter into oracle user and do the following
    su - oracle
    cd /media/cdrom
    ./runInstaller
    However, I receive the following message : Olite installation requires ORACLE_HOME to be set. PLease set it and retry again.
    So I set the following like so,
    export ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle
    export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle
    export ORACLE_SID= demo1
    ./runInstaller
    I than get the following message.
    Olite installation requires JAVA13_HOME to be set. PLease set it JDK 1.4.1 install area and rety again.
    I am not sure what JAVA13_HOME is but I am wondering if it is related to some Mobile sync. Also, could somebody help me and advise if I am going in the right direction here?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Alex

    Hi Alex
    Can you please control that ?
    JAVA13_HOME will be the location for your JAVA home. You can check the path for your java installtion, either 1.3 or 1.4 and set the path accordingly. Usually in Linux the path will be some thing like /local/java/jdk1.4.2.
    TNS_ADMIN should point to $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
    Please read that also http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28928_01/doc/server.103/b28924/preinstall.htm
    Let us know if it helps you.

    It appears that the installer is saying that RedHat 3, SuSE 8 or 9, and UnitedLinux 1 are supported. That would imply that RedHat 4 is not (you can validate this on Metalink).
    You could try telling Oracle to ignore the system prerequisites with the -ignoreSysPrereqs parameter, but that's not a great idea if you are expecting support.
