Installing OS 9 for Classic.

I have recently inherited an iMac G3 350MHz Slot Loading (which I believe was introduces in October 1999). It shipped with OS 9.03 which was systematically over the years updated to OS 9.1.0, 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 respectively. A retail copy of OS X 10.3.4 was installed some time thereafter.
I have since acquiring the machine, formatted the hard drive and reinstalled OS X 10.3.4 (updated to 10.3.9). What I did not realise however was that you actually have to have OS 9 installed in order to run Classic.
Ok great, how do I do this?
I do not appear to be able to install OS 9 on the OS X volume after the OS X installation, using either the Mac OS 9 Installation CD or Mac OS 9-based Software Restore CD which came with your computer.
Can this be done? Do I have to reformat install OS 9 and then install OS X?
Unless I’m missing the point it does not appear that Apple have a guide to installing OS 9 for classic when;
(1) Your computer came with OS 9.03
(2) You purchased a retail copy of OS 10.3x to be installed “on top of” OS 9
(3) You have now formatted the drive (1 partition) reinstalled OS 10.3x and now wish to install OS 9 for classic.
Literature available on the Apple support pages assume that using either a retail Mac OS 9 Installation CD or Mac OS 9-based Software Restore CD which came with your computer. I have neither or do I misunderstand?
The Mac OS X Bible says that it is possible as follows;
(a) Install OS X and reboot
(b) Boot with OS 9 install disc
(c) Create new folder on HD and copy OS X applications into this folder
(d) Install OS 9
(e) Copy back the OS X applications
(f) Reboot.
This works for me until step (d). I get an error saying that the install cannot modify the system folder already installed. Is this because the OS 9 that is trying to install is only 9.0.3?

If you had the checkbox Install Mac OS 9 Drivers checked you can either copy by dragging the OS 9 Applications and System Folders. If you don't have it backed up you have to install from disk. Here are directions for installation in case you need to do it from scratch.
1. Boot from OS X Installer Disk holding down the C key.
2. Once booted, go to Installer Menu (in Panther) or Utilities Menu (in TIger)
3. Open Disk Utilities.
4. Select Drive to be formatted in left Panel and Erase in Main Panel. (If you want to partition and need help please post back). Be sure to Choose Mac OS Extended is selected in the pull-down menu, and the Install Mac OS 9 Drivers box is checked.
5. Click Option in bottom left of Main Panel.
6. Choose Zero all Data, click OK then Erase.
7. Quit Disk Utility and open Installer.
8. You can choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers.
9. Complete installation Process.
10. Computer restarts after installation. Go to Applications>Disk Utility>Repair Permissions.
11. Log on to internet and Update Software.
If you want to do this from your OS 9 disk:
Clean Panther installation
1. Boot from your OS 9 install CD holding down C key.
2. Go to Drive Setup and reformat your drive as Mac OS Extended (HFS+)
2. Reinstall OS 9
3. Update to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
4. Upgrade your firmware: Mac OS X: Chart of Available Firmware Updates
5. Boot from the 10.3.x install CD 1
6. Go to Installer Menu and open Disk Utility
7. Repair Permissions!
8. Install Mac OS X 10.3.x
9. Restart and Repair permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!
10. Download and apply the Mac OS X Update 10.3.9 (Combo)
11. Restart and Repair permissions!
12. Run Software Update and apply all updates available
Tiger from OS 9
1. Boot from your OS 9 install CD holding down C key.
2. Go to Drive Setup and reformat your drive as Mac OS Extended (HFS+)
2. Reinstall OS 9
3. Update to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
4. Upgrade your firmware
5. Boot from the 10.4.x install disk
6. Go to Utilities Menu and open Disk Utility
7. Repair Permissions!
8. Install Mac OS X 10.4.x
9. Restart and Repair permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!
10. Download and apply the Mac OS X Update 10.4.4 (Combo)
11. Restart and Repair permissions!
12. Run Software Update and apply all updates available

How do I install 9.1 for Classic Environment?

Hi, this question might sound dumb because I'm not familiar with OS X.
I have a 800 Mhz G4 Quicksilver running 10.1.3. What I want to do is install 9.1 onto the Mac so I can have the whole classic environment shebang.
I was told that you can partition the hard drive, but The Disk Utility says it can't partition a disk with the running system on it. <---my hard drive. I've tried holding down c at startup, that doesn't work, I selected the 9.1 disk as the start up disk, that resulted in the beloved blinking question mark over the system folder on startup. I have a good feeling it's a pretty simple process, I just have no idea how to go about it.

If you partition the hard drive you are then reformating it and will have to re-install OSX and all your files. Just insert a retail version of 9.1 and install from there. You can then update incrementally to 9.2.2.

Can you still install OS 9 (for classic mode) on Leopard?

I have Tiger running on one of my PPC G5 machines. My son has the They Might Be Giants "No" CD that has an interactive game. I believe I can install OS 9 so that it sees it when running the game in classic mode. We are thinking of upgrading that mac to Leopard. Once I do that, will classic mode still work. I realize with Intel, OS 9 is dead, but since we still have the old PPC mac, I would like to be able to use it. If there is a better spot to ask this question, please let me know.

You can't run Classic on Leopard even on a PPC Mac, but what you could do is create and maintain a bootable clone of your current Tiger system on a FireWire external drive. You could then boot the G5 from the Tiger clone when you wanted to run a Classic app.

Installing Office 2001 for Mac on new Mac Mini

I own a copy of Office for Mac 2001 that was used on my older iMac.
I thought I could install this on my new Mac mini with OS X. However, after attempting to install from my CD I get an error message saying it is not compatible on the system.
Does anyone out there know if you can infact use an older version of Office for mac on the new Mac mini's? Or, do I need to purchase the latest and greatest version of Office for my new system?
There's got to be a way... don't want t spend another $600 when I have the older version that works fine.

You need to install SheepShaver to use Classic and Classic applications such as Office 2001 on an Intel Mac. The current version of Office will run from Mac OS X, and all of its components except for Virtual PC run in Mac OS X on an Intel Mac.

Installing and Running in Classic Environment

When trying to install CorelDraw 8 for Mac, need to install Classic. I've read how to do this on my iMac 5. My question is, does this effect switching back and forth? After installing classic, can you walk me through do I just insert the Corel program and do an install? Is there a preference where to install or follow the defaults or choose applications? Than after Corel installed properly, a hard boot -is there a prompt to open in classic or does it automatically go to Corel in classic instead of desktop view? Than to exit the environment do you just turn off the computer or do you have to select to go back to regular running version? Is there some info available? I don't want to screw up my machine and this is my primary question, is this an OK thing to do for a newbie or is this advanced stuff? Thanks and if there is some place I can learn about classic, please direct me, Michael.

Once classic is on just install as normal in OS X, classic will load up in the background as and when required.

IMac G4 / "Downgrading" to Tiger from Leopard / Installing(?) OS 9/Classic

Hey guys, I have an old iMac G4 (1.0 GHz, 17") that I bought used - it's in great shape, but it has been upgraded to Leopard 10.5.8 and I don't have the original discs. I got the computer because I have several programs I'd like to run via OS 9 "Classic" mode (mostly for nostalgia's sake). I have the following questions:
1. Is it possible to somehow "downgrade" the computer to Tiger 10.4.11 using a full retail disc? I am perfectly willing to wipe the entire machine - there is nothing essential on it.
2. If that is possible, would I then need to find a full retail copy of OS 9 for Classic mode to run, or is this built-in/included in the full version of 10.4?
3. If none of the above are possible (or practical), are there legitimate, stable emulators(?) out there that I can download/purchase to run old applications that require OS 9 on the G4 and/or a more modern Intel-based iMac? If so, could you recommend some?

Just erase the HD & install Tiger using the retail installer. After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
If you just want to run classic mode while booted in Tiger, just copy the System Folder containing OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.1 from another Mac & transfer to your iMac. OS 9 is not included on the Tiger installer.

HT1349 Trying to install latest iTunes for Windows 7 64-bit. Keep getting this error message "Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

Initially iTunes would not run although it had been running quite well up until now. Suddenly received this error on PC start-up "The program can't start because MSVC80.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." Research on Net pointed me to iTunes as the issue. Tried to start iTunes and received that message again. Tried installing latest version of 64-bit iTunes and received the subject message part way through the install: Trying to install latest iTunes for Windows 7 64-bit. Keep getting this error message "Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."
iTunes has been running great on this PC for years. What's up?

The 3rd call - Although I had been told during the prior 2 calls that I was still covered under my warrenty I was now told that I needed to pay for the support call. It took a while to get that straighteded out and to give all my information again to
the call center but I finally worked with a 3rd tech for over 2 hrs. but had to terminate the call for a conference call I had with a client. The person I worked with said he would call me back between 7-8pmEST so he could continue helping me but I never
got a return call.
I have already invested over 10 hrs in the last few days regarding this issue and fear that if I call back in I will once again start over completely with no success which is why I am reaching out here. Is there anyone that has the knowledge of how to fix
the problem?

I've been having the same problem and today did some searching and found something that worked. Check that the download hasn't already been installed - look in the Installed Updates listing for an entry. If it exists there, uninstall it, and
then force a Check For Updates and retry the install. This worked for me and I hope it helps.

I have been trying to install the driver for a Wacom Bamboo Pad. There are several driver packages listed on the website (the device is supplied ready to run with Windows devices) and I have tried tried downloading all the available drivers which apply to my set-up. Some will not open at all and I get a 'Damaged' message on my screen. Of the ones which open, I can download the .dmg and expand it but when clicked it opens as a window with multiple choice of languages and an icon which instructs you to click to open.
If I do this some versions repeat the 'damaged' message but the later ones generate a window saying:-
'“Install Wacom Tablet.pkg" can't be opened because the Identity of the developer cannot be conﬁrmed.' - this is as far as I can get it to go; most frustrating!
I understand that Apple's security updates have recently included an alteration that causes this result, and that there is supposed to be a legal (i.e. Apple sanctioned) workaround to allow files like this to be opened. If this is so, can anyone enlighten me?

I have since uninstalled and reinstalled the app, but get the same error message.

Which version of OS X do you have? It's not clear from your post whether "installed an upgrade" means you just installed PSE 13 as an upgrade or you installed an update to PSE 13, like ACR 9 or 13.1. Please clarify.
