Installing OS on 2nd internal HD

Hi. I have a second internal hard drive that has data on it. Currently, there is no OS on this drive. I would like to install OS X 10.4 on it so that I can boot to it if needed (repair on 1st hard drive, etc). Is it possible to use my OS X install DVD to install on the 2nd Hard Drive without wiping out all the data that currently resides on that drive or will installation erase all my data? I'd like to avoid having to back up the data and then copy it back to the 2nd hard drive if I can. Thanks!
Apple G5 1.8 ghz, LaCie 321, internal 80GB & internal 250GB drives, FW800 external HD   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   4 external USB2 drives, 2 external FW400 drives

Collect all the data on the 2nd HD into one unique folder and name it something like DonTouch. Launch Disk Utility, repair that HD, and ensure that it's formatted HFS+. Then, use something such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to clone your current installation onto the 2nd HD. Neither will touch the unique folder DonTouch. You might also be able to use the Tiger install disk to do that, but then you'd have to reset all of your preferences or use the migration assistant to transfer everything over. That takes about twice as long as making the bootable clone.

  • How do I install Bootcamp on 2nd internal iMac drive?

Have a new iMac with a 1TB internal HD in addition to the SSD startup drive.
Can I, and if so how do I, install Bootcamp on the 1TB internal HD? Will the Bootcamp Assistant point out the 2nd internal drive and proper location during the install process?
I purchased this iMac w/wireless keyboard, mouse, and trackpad...is that going to be a problem during the Windows install?
    Thanks,
    David

Bootcamp actually gave me an option to install on the 2nd internal iMac drive and it's working like a champ!
Thinking I was relegated to a Bootcamp partition on my SSD startup drive, I went ahead and delved into the Bootcamp install, only to find an option to install on either my SSD startup drive or my 2nd internal iMac drive. I simply chose the 2nd drive and lo, and behold, as I hold the Option button down on startup, both of my operating systems (OS X and Windows) available for selection.
Thanks for all the help, but it looks as though the latest edition of Bootcamp has addressed this issue, I am quite pleased.

Ignore the MacKeeper ad no matter what else you decide.
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Just sits there occupying very little space & never interfering, unless you need to invoke it in Single User Mode.

  • Installing LR4 and PS6 on a 2nd internal SSD

I'm installing a second (2nd) internal SSD in my new computer and want to load LR4 and CS6 on the second internal SSD which will be dive letter "J". Will LR4 and PS6 launch and work properly from my second internal SSD drive? Windows 8 operating system will stay on the "C" drive.

It should work fine.  Please keep in mind that there will still be shared components installed on the C: drive.

  • How do I setup the scratch disk on a 2nd internal drive?

I am having difficulty setuping up a scratch disk on a 2nd internal hard drive for final cut pro X. When I go to file/import the second drive is not visible. Any ideas....
    Thanks!

I had the same issue with my iMac and 2 internal disks: system & applications on 256GB SSD, another 2TB internal hard disk that was meant to store media, and Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 just wouldn't see my 2TB internal disk. Only the SSD would appear in the Event Browser.
I solved it by checking read/write permissions on the hard disk. I have 2 users: one with admin rights which I used to initially set up the iMac and install software (including FCP X), and another user with standard rights for everyday use (including FCP X production).
My 2nd user only had read permissions on the 2nd internal hard disk. I selected the disk, Command-I, changed permissions to read/write, and when I launched FCP X again, both volumes would show up now. Issue solved!
    Hope this helps.

  • Hard Drive In 2nd Internal Bay Sometimes won't mount

I recently installed a second internal drive in my computer. My main problem is sometimes the drive won't mount. If I turn off the computer for a while it will finally mount but that's not good enough. One day it may not mount at all. What I want to know is; does anybody else have this problem and if so, how did you fix it?
Or better yet, is there a command I can use in Terminal to mount the drive?
G5 Dual 2.5 GHz; 4.5 Gig Ram; Logic Pro 7.1.1   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   2nd internal 160 gig hard drive installed

Barry, make sure all of your connections are seated properly. I had this same problem with a SP 1.8 PowerMac, and the problem was that the cable was not seated well which disrupts the signals from getting to the drive. This caused the drive to mount sometimes, and not mount others. Check connections at the drive and motherboard.

  • I have Lion on an external hard-drive and I want to install it on the internal disk

I have Lion on an external hard-drive and I want to install it on the internal disk. How can I proceed?

I recently completed a clean install of Lion on an internal SSD. After wiping it clean, I used a thumb drive with SL on it to boot and then another thumb drive with Lion on it. It worked just fine. The only thing to be aware of is that if you use the thumb to install Lion from... it will not install a recovery partition and you'll have to use the thumb in the future.
That's what I wanted anyway so it's working out just fine. Good luck.
I should add... I used the SL thumb to actually boot from and used Disk Utlities to wipe the internal SSD. It does work and there are Apple posts that can guide you through the thumb drive process. I used copycat to create both the SL boot and Lion.

A single user license allows for having activated installations on two machines. An Elements license allows for either platform in many cases (recently not the case from what I've seen).  If you have the disc, see if it contains the Mac installation files... if it does then you should be able to install them via a download as well.  I cannot answer with certainty for the last question since it relies on the previous question.  Personally, I would not let an inexpensive piece of software dictate an expensive hardware purchase decision.

    Hi.
I added a 2nd internal SCSI drive into my 7500/100. It does not show up on the desk top. I rebuild the desktop reset the cuda and ran SCSIProbe. The computer starts up on the newly added drive. No sign from the original drive. Please help.

there are jumpers on the drives that need to be properly set. Both drives are set with the terminating resistor on, one needs to be off. Carefully note nthe placement of the existing jumpers then remove the jumper from the drive in the middle connector.

  • Adding 2nd internal HD

I am considering adding a 2nd internal HD to my PowerMac G5 (June 2003 - single 1.8 processor) & was wondering what type HD is recommended. Will this machine use a SATA drive or only a PATA drive? Is it important to have a drive that supports S.M.A.R.T. or is that just hype?
I may also replace the original drive (160G) that came with the machine. My stratigy is to put a 500G-750G in slot 2, clone the new drive & make it the boot drive. Test it for a while until I know all is OK, then replace the 160G with a 500G-750G. Does anyone have experience with this? What drives are the best? I have several external LaCie drives, but I don't see LaCie's being used as internals. I don't even know if they make internal drives.
I do want a drive that has at least the same (or better) reliability & life cycle of the original that came with the machine, which BTW is working great.
    Thanks,
    Lee

    Hi LStacy-
You will need an SATA drive.
The drive does not have to support SMART. It is a tad of hype but sometimes can be helpful. Most internal units support SMART anyway.
I have done precisely as you describe with regards to cloning, upgrading and testing drives. Any SATA drive manufactured by any of the large vendors (Seagate, Maxtor, WD, Hitachi for example) will work.
External LaCie drives have actual physical hard drive mechanisms manufactured by drive manufacturers, so in other words a LaCie housing could contain a Maxtor or Seagate drive.
You can always take your current drive and place it in an external housing to use for backups and such.

  • Use restore disc to check 2nd internal HD for errors or....?

I am just wondering if I can use Disk Utility to check the condition of my 2nd internal drive from my main HD, or if I have to use the system restore disk.
Also wondering if I can partition the 2nd drive from the other drive as well. Getting ready to upgrade to Leopard on late 2005 G5.

You certainly can. When you run DU, the available drives appear on the left. Select the drive you want to deal with, and proceed. And yes, partitioning is also okay.

  • Please Help: problems with 2nd internal SATA drive on G5

    Hello everyone,
I was transferring and deleting very large files from my main drive, a 2nd 250GB SATA internal drive, and an external 250GB FW800 drive recently (about 50GB worth of data transfered), and decided to run disk warrior and repair my permissions/verify disk in disk utilities once completed.
Everything seemed fine until I verified my 2nd internal drive upon which I received the following error: "First Aid Failed" citing "Invalid node structure" and that the volume needs to be repaired. I attempted to Repair disk, though the process stops and I get the same error "Volume could not be repaired because of an error."
This 2nd SATA drive only holds data (I'm a musician so it only holds sample data for streaming in Logic) but it contains allot of information (185GB used of 233GB) which according to my math comes out to about 80% used. This should be acceptable amount, correct? The drive also has Journaling enabled, though I'm not sure if its relevant or not.
What should I do? The drive itself seems to be working fine, but why would disk utility have a problem reading/repairing it if its indeed fine. Should I be worried? The drive is probably no more than 2 years old, so it cant be drive failure yet, can it?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
Update: I tried to graph the problem drive again in diskwarrior, and this time an error occurred! This obviously did not happen the first time I used diskwarrior to graph and build a new directory, so something must have happened recently. What could have happened? What should I do?

    Yes, that's fine.

sure if its relevant or not.
Hmm, I think I once had a drive with a directory problem that couldn't be fixed with DiskWarrior without journaling being (temporarily) disabled. After disabling journaling, I used DiskWarrior to Rebuild the drive's directory, then I reenabled journaling.
What should I do? The drive itself seems to be

I'm afraid it could be, I've had drives fail at any time between half a year after purchase up to 3 or more years after. Though often one hears the drive "die", or notices very slow performance due to bad blocks being weeded out, and the S.M.A.R.T. status - visible in Disk Utility (only for internal drives) in the bottom right, when you select a drive (not volume) is an indicator of a harddisk's health as well (though not the most complete, see this hint, or S.M.A.R.T. Guard).
Update: I tried to graph the problem drive again in
diskwarrior, and this time an error occurred! This
obviously did not happen the first time I used
diskwarrior to graph and build a new directory, so
    something must have happened recently.
Did you try to repair anything with Disk Utility in the meantime?
    What could
have happened? What should I do?
So did the Repair with DiskWarrior not finish? What kind of error was it?
In my experience, DiskWarrior mostly fixed any directory trouble. For more serious cases, see this thread.

  • Time Machine Error - 2nd Internal HD got unmounted when TM doing backup

    Hi:
It has been going on for a couple months since and I had to turn TM off cause when TM starts to back up - it will unmount my 2nd internal 500G HD. If I exclude the 2nd HD then TM back up works fine.
My question is what should I change on the 2nd HD setting to prevent TM unmounting it - error "device removal!" will show up and then the 2nd HD disappear from desktop? I can't reformat the 2nd HD as there are tons of important files in it. Also TM would not let me backup the 2nd HD anyway.
