Installing OS X 10.4.4 on my ibook g4

I hope someone can help.... I bought a refurbished ibook g4 12'' 1Ghz with the following..
a. airport extreme
b. 512 Mb of ram
c. 8x combo drive
d. OS X 10.3.9
Now that being said, i was given this dvd with OS X 10.4.4 on it. The problem is when I try to install the system, after the mac restarts, it says that this program can not be installed on this computer. What gives?!
Thanks

The DVD you have is intended for a newer model of iBook G4; it does not contain the necessary resources to create a working Mac OS X system on your computer. As previously stated, you need to use a retail package.

  • Has anyone ever installed a G4 logic board into a G3 iBook?

I was just wondering if it was at all possible to install a G4 logic board in a G3 iBook. To be specific, I have an iBook G3 900MHz with a faulty logic board. I could have it replaced under the Apple Logic Board Replacement Program, but I'd hate to replace a bad part with a part that will most likely go bad in the future. Also, trying to find an affordable (in the $100 range) replacement logic board on eBay or anywhere else is proving impossible.
So, could I buy a 1GHz or similar G4 logic board and swap it into the G3 iBook? I'm sure someone out there has tried something like this, right?
    I'm intrigued by the possability.

I doubt it. They don't even take the same kind of RAM.
What makes you think a replacement "will most likely go bad in the future"? Some have had to go back more than once; many haven't. (And many have not gone in at all.) There are many iBook users out there, happily iBooking away without any knowledge of the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program because they've never had a problem.
Get it replaced, free, NOW, and worry about the future when it gets here.

You people sure like to make things difficult.

    trevbeats,
I had the same problem. It turned out the issue for me was that I had Automatic downloads turned off on my devices!
see below how to turn it on.
Tap Settings > iTunes & App Stores on your device.
Tap Sign In if you're not already signed in to the iTunes Store.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
Tap On/Off switch to enable or disable Automatic Downloads for each content type.

  • Install old iLife from 10.3 disks onto iBook w/ a clean install of Tiger?

My ibook originally came with Panther 10.3. iLife was included on the install disks.
A few months ago, I did a clean install of Tiger. I then tried to reinstall iLife from the Panther 10.3 disks. However, only Garageband and iDVD show up ---iPhoto and iMovie don't show up at all. I've searched for these programs, but they are not installed.
I spoke to an apple rep and he said that I should NEVER install old programs from a Panther disk onto a clean install of Tiger. However, the guy did not seem confident in what he told me. He said my mac should be very unstable and that I shouldn't even be able to use Garageband....but I have had no problems with my mac or using Garageband for the past 4 months.
Is he correct? And if so, should I do a clean install of Panther, and then upgrade to Tiger? I wonder if this will correctly install the whole iLife suite?

  • Is it feasible to install a 6 GB hard drive in my iBook?

I'll 'fess up to not being the the sharpest pencil in the box, and I probably made a fatal financial mistake.
I'm poor, and just spent my tax refund on an iBook with an AirPort card & 160 MB of memory. I do some freelance writing, & planned to use the public library's wireless internet network to email manuscripts to magazine editors. I need word processing software that can be read by PCs (I have AppleWorks 6) but I don't have enough memory to install modern software packages.
I called up the Apple Store, and then an authorized Apple repair shop. I was told that at one time Apple had 6 GB hard drives for iBooks. If I obtained this hard drive from a 3rd party I could have it installed for $60 or $70.
My gut instinct is that if I can find someone willing to part with an iBook 6 GB hard drive it will be expensive and/or at the end of it's life span. But maybe I'm wrong. I don't know about computers, I only know I can't spend hundreds of dollars unless I'm sure I'll end up with a laptop that will allow me to email manuscripts.
Should I cut my losses now, or try and find a 6 GB hard drive for my iBook?

    Karen:
The average life of a laptop HDD is 3 to 5 years. Because of the architecture of the drive it begins failing with age, and performance degrades. 6 GB is too small, 10 GB is too small. The minimum HDD I would install is 20 GB, but I think you should aim for something closer to 100 GB. You seem to have the earliest iBook introduced in July 1999 and has the 300 MHz processor. It will support a drive up to 120 GB. Here is a 120 GB HDD that will serve you well for a long time.
I realize that you are anxious to get going with your project. However, I suggest that you take time to research well or you may find yourself making costly mistakes.
    Good luck.

  • What happened? I installed 10.4 on my G4 1.33 iBook 10.4too old- problems!

    Hello,
Recently I purchased a 1.33 iBook on ebay for my wife. Upon receiving it I swapped out the 40GB with a Seagate 100GB. I then installed OS 10.4 (not the iBook grey discs, but the retail version which was 10.4.2)
Well this caused problems, no mouse trackpad use, and more.
Now, the iBook install discs aren't recognized. Either they don't mount, or the computer says that it's blank or does not recognize it.
Oh, I did Erase the 100 with OS Journaled.
Now, I've never owned a computer so new that the OS retail version was older than the computer's needs.
What do I do now? I'm real close to reinstalling the 40. But if anyone can tell me how to fix this problem I'd appreciate it.
I've tried everything from target disc installing (with a 10.4.6) to external DVD drive istall.
I've done pram reset, PMU reset... basically it's like there's a firmware not present to communicate with the optical drive.
If no one has a resolution... can someone atleast tell me what I've done?
    Thanks,
    Dzve

Putting an older OS on a unit that required 10.4.2 was the problem. Drivers did not install and caused it to behave poorly.
Most of it regarded the disc drive. I now wonder if I could have installed patch burn once one of the OS installs worked. That might have cured it. Nonetheless, I sold the computer with full disclosure on the problem and purchased a different one for my wife.

  • Installing GB 1.0 or 2.0 on ibook 600MHz

My school has 5 iBooks without DVD drives. They are the 600 MHz models with 2 USB/1firewire (2.5 - 3 yrs. old). They will be upgraded to 384 megs ram and are running 10.2.8 (I think?).
Can I install ANY version of GB onto these?
Is there a multi-CD install avail. for GB 1.0?
Can I use an ext. DVD drive to install either version?
Is there any way at all to get ANY version on these iBooks?
Thanks for any and all help.
    Bob

384 MB RAM is not really sufficient to run GarageBand. These iBooks must have come stock with 128 MB and you are proposing to add a 256MB chip to bring them up to 384.
RAM is dirt-cheap right now. I would lobby to have these iBooks packed with as much RAM as they can hold.
For instance, 512MB for the newest iBook G4 can be had for $55, and that's for a genuine Samsung chip, the best quality. I know because I just bought one. So you can add 512 to your existing 128 and get 640. This is probably the most practical option.
But if your model iBook (and you didn't specify exactly which model you have) can handle it, you can get a 1GB chip for a total of 1152MB. I don't know if this is possible or practical with your model; you'll have to check.
I run GarageBand 2 on a Mac mini with a 1.33GHz G4 chip, and 1GB RAM. Around here we consider this to be the slowest, least powerful system generally suitable for GarageBand.
I encourage you to see what you can get out of your existing systems. But if your notebooks don't have a DVD drive, I honestly don't know how you can install GarageBand, since iLife '05 comes on a DVD. Perhaps it is possible to special-order iLife '05 on a set of CDs rather than one DVD. Contact Apple Education on the phone and ask them.

  • Instal Tiger and Leo on separate partitions of iBook G4 HD?

Hi. Is it safe to instal OSX Tiger & OSX Leopard on two separate partitions of the same harddrive of an iBook G4 1.33Ghz 1.5RAM 12" Combo , and boot up using whichever OS is desired by selecting the "start up disc" in the preference pane? I just have a few apps which don't run on Leo, but I'd like to use Leo for my daily stuff like email, browsing, ical and others. I bought the Leo upgrade, but haven't upgraded yet. I just don't want to jeopardize hardware and/or OSs by using both, although only either or, but still on the same hard drive. No clue if there could be any kind of interference.
    Thanks a lot!!!
    M

Honestly, I haven't found a definite general statement how Leopard runs on the latest G4 iBooks. Some say it's smooth, others say it's not good.
I wouldn't expect anything else. If you ask about which OS, which email client, which browser, which editor, etc. you are going to have differing opinions. You just need to review those and make your own determination on the benefits and risks.

  • Can you install an 80gb 4200rpm powerbook g4 hd into iBook g4 800?

    Hi Michael,
I am guessing any warranties you may have had expired by now? If you replace you hard drive yourself, you will void any warranties you may have.
If you are going to install a hard drive into your iBook, you may want to look at iFixit: iBook G4 12" - Installing Hard Drive Replacement. It doesn't matter much between the 12" instructions and 14", but here they are iFixit: iBook G4 14" - Installing Hard Drive Replacement.

  • How can I install OSX Tiger from a DVD if my iBook G3 600mhz only has a CD?

I just purchased this iBook for my wife as a starter laptop for her as I love Macs and iBooks and I know she will be better off with one than the HP laptop she has. It is in pristine condition. The only problem is that the iBook is loaded with OS X 10.1.4 which is outdated and needs an upgrade. I found my old Tiger DVD and wanted to upgrade but the iBook only has a CD drive. I do not have an external DVD drive or such. What can I do? Can I copy the info off of the DVD onto a Pen Drive? Any suggestions? Please help. Thank you so much!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you want to run Mac OS X 10.4, you need to upgrade the iBook's RAM. Mac OS X 10.4 requires a minimum of 256 MB of RAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514?viewlocale=en_US
Although a 128 MB module would get the iBook up to the minimum required by Mac OS X 10.4, I strongly recommend that you maximize the RAM with a 512 MB RAM module. It takes a 144-pin, 3.3 V, PC100 or PC133 compliant, 1.25 inch SDRAM SO-DIMM.
Instructions for adding the RAM can be found in this Apple Knowledge Base article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111918
Once you get the RAM upgraded, you can attach the iBook G3 to your iBook G4 with a FireWire cable and use the iBook G4's optical drive to upgrade the iBook G3 with Mac OS X 10.4 (assuming that you have the full retail DVD, and not an upgrade DVD or one that came with another Mac).
Instructions for doing that can be found in these two articles:
    http://www.oreillynet.com/mac/blog/2005/05/thecats_mustachesinstalling.html
    http://lowendmac.com/misc/06/0710.html
    Good luck!

  • Installed Additional RAM - anything else?

I just installed an additional 512mb of RAM on my iBook, bringing the total RAM up to 1GB. The installation was pretty painless, but now I'm wondering: is there anything I should do to double-check the RAM to make sure it is working properly? On the 'About this Mac' page, it does show that my Mac now has 1GB of RAM, which is a good sign - but should I pursue anything else like a Hardware Test or the like just to be sure?

Usually, you'll be alright, but if things start acting odd, like your machine stops booting, etc. that's when you might start thinking there is something wrong with your RAM.
Until then, chill out and enjoy things.

  • What is the lastest version of iphoto that can be installed on MacBook3,1  Intel Core 2 Duo

    I have Iphoto '08 version 7.1.5 installed.
I am trying to make an ibook (to be printed)
I've done it before and since changing my harddrive, I cannot access any projects.
the error message is that there are no themes installed.
I cannot seem to find where themes are to download and install them.
I have upgraded, and installed the 7.1.5 update.
    my computer info:
    MacBook
      Model Identifier:    MacBook3,1
Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:    2.2 GHz
    OSX    10.6.8
any help as to how I can print another book from iphoto would be helpful.
I understand I may have to use another on demand printing service such as blurb, but I really don't want to.
    thanks.

Do you want to have the book printed by Apple? That is no longer possible using iPhoto '08. YOu need at least iPhoto '09,  see:  Product Line Details for Books, Cards, and Calendars
    I cannot access any projects.
the error message is that there are no themes installed.
    See Old Toad's answer here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6394288&#6394288
Themes are best restored by reinstalling iPhoto.
Or, if you have a backup of your system, look in your backup for the folder
    Your HD/Library/Application Support/iPhoto
and restore the themes to the corresponding folder.

  • Error when trying to start from install disk OS X 10.4

    Hi,
I have an iBook G4 with the 1.42 GHz model, 60 GB, 512 RAM. I am running OSX 10.4.11. I would like to get it to run better. I installed TenFourFox as my new browser, that seemed to help, but it's still pretty slow. So then I freed up some more space on the hard drive. Then I started it up in Safe Mode, then I ran the disk utility and repaired the disk permissions. I ran the disk verify and found errors, and I then ran fsck - y at the command line. That seemed to get rid of the errors, but I am thinking I should format the hard drive and do a clean install.
Will doing a clean install help the computer run better/ faster? How can I do it? I am running into errors...
I lost the install disks, but luckily a friend of mine had a copy.
I insert the disk, power down, and restart.
I get the a really long error message, below are snippets:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E0BF4): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook6,7"
Latest stack backtrace for cpu 0:
    Backtrace 0x00099EA4 0x0009A860 0x00027A28 0x002E)B4.....
No debugger configured - dumping debug information...
    panic: We are hanging here.
Is there something wrong with my computer? Or are the install disks not compatible? Maybe they were install disks for a powerbook and not an iBook (not sure if that matters).
I am also considering installing RAM. Will that help a lot with the speed (i.e. 50% faster?) or just a little?
Thanks a lot for any input!

Wrong install Disc, that one is machine specific, & doubtful a reinstall will help all that much.
More RAM will likely help, but not awfully likely it'll be 50%.
To tell, ehen it gets slow, Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, sort on CPU%, see if anything using too much CPU% when this happens, click on Memory tab, do you have many Pageouts?

  • The latest update for iTunes 11.1.3, iBooks 1.0.1, Mail 1.0 won't update/install properly.

I recently installed Mavericks. The latest update for iTunes, iBooks and Mail do not install properly. I have tried updating individually and the Appstore indicates that they're installed. However after every restart the Appstore shows that the same update is available. I checked the applications folder and clicked on the 3 apps to "Get Info" and they're all still the old versions. I've repeatedly tried to update and install and the Appstore history has shown that I've tried over and over again. Any solutions would be appreciated please!

I'm having this same issue, except Mail and iBooks are both installed, but showing as need to be updated (to same version already installed several days ago). iTunes was also doing this until I manually installed it, but the other two still won't be recognized as updated. I did a sudo softwareupdate -i -a and that failed as well. So I did a
