Installing OS X 10.5 on a PowerMac mirror-front tower

Hello
My friend asked if I could please help him resurrect his old mirror-front PowerMac. It's the silver rounded one with dual optical drives and the mirror drive bays in front. A dual 1.2GHz (or something close to that).
Will 10.5 install on this? I had one install left on my old family pack for my 10.5 disc, and the disc is telling me that there's a BSD error of some sort.
How can I install 10.5 on this thing?
Thanks,
-----------S

The only 10.5 that will install on that machine is the retail 10.5. The disc must look like * and not say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM. Before upgrading the machine to 10.5, realize that Classic will be gone. If you have a model with no Firewire 800, you will still be able to boot into Mac OS 9. There is no Boot Camp support for that machine at all. If your desire is to run Windows, see my FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
You do have other options for Classic here:
http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#CLASSIC
Make sure all your software supports 10.5 before upgrading:

  • G4 PowerMac Mirror Door Upgrade of ATI 9000 Pro to a 9600?

I am considering upgrading my G4 PowerMac Mirror Door mac. Specifically the graphics card in hopes of better performance. I was considering the ATI Radeon 9600 XT or Pro. However, I have noticed that some cards work only in the G5. Anyone have any idea what card, if any, is the fastest, best performing card I can place into this machine? I should mention that currently, I have the stock ATI Radeon 9000 Pro, that came with the machine. The procs are twin 1.25 Ghz Power PC, 1 MB L3 Cache per Proc. 2 GB DDR SDRAM. Thanks in advance for any help on this topic!

    Hello.
I am running a nearly identical MDD as yours and would highly recommend the 9800 Pro. It supports all there is to offer with Tiger, and is the best card you can buy for your current model.
I've read some problems with the 9600, and the 9800 is considerably faster, of course at a price, but if your looking for the best, there really is no other option.

  • Need help installing classic/OS X (10.4) on PowerMac G4

I'm hoping someone can help me, my brother bought himself a new computer and gave me his Powermac G4 http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G4_Quicksilver2002.html the M8666LL/A model. Now this computer is a mess so I want to completely reformat the drive and install what I need.
Here's my problem, he cannot find his original disk that came with the computer. I want to install OS X and also have Classic run, I need classic for all the games my kids have that only run with OS 9.
Where should I start, I would like to have 10.4 on, can I install 10.4 and classic with retail copies. This is what I have:
Mac OS X v10.1 Retail (Mac OS 9.2 CD included)
    Mac OS X v10.2 Retail
    Mac OS X v10.3 Retail
    Mac OS X v10.4 Retail
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, got real busy with work I have not had the chance to follow up. I will be trying this over the weekend, so lets see if I got this right.
Boot from the 10.4 Retail disc, reformat the drive, install 10.4 and then I assume I have to boot from the 9.2 disc to install OS 9 and after when I reboot into 10.4 classicc should work?

  • Can't install OS X Server 10.4 on Powermac G4

When I try to install Server on my Powermac G4, with Mac OS X 10.4 using the installation in the other installations folder, so without rebooting from the disc... I get a message I can't install it because the upgrade is only for intel, while it is actually Universal...
Can someone help me? I installed it before and found a way around it somewhere on the internet, but I don't know how I did it anymore.

    Hi
Presumably you have 10.4.x client already installed? What version of the client is it? What version of the OSX Installer DVD are you trying to install? Ideally they should be the same. Currently the latest verison of OSX Universal Installer is 10.4.7, ideally the client should be at least that or better still 10.4.8.

  • Need help installing Ubuntu Studio on my PPC G5 Powermac

I want to set a new partition and want to install Ubuntu Studio as my great love is recording and I'm dying to run Ubuntu as a new toy! What's the BEST build of Ubuntu Studio that will run on a PPC chip? How do I install it - will it boot from the DVD or CD? Also will it give me a dual-boot menu to choose what OS I want to use? Any help would be great as I'm a novice to Linux although I tried out a live CD on my Windows 7 laptop and was liking the new "drug"

    Updating
Certain steps appear to minimize the risk of an update producing problems.
Number one is to make sure you have a bootable clone backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again. This is the only guaranteed way of not having to worry about the results of an update.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk. Permissions repair can, and is probably best, done when booted from your internal drive.

You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.

I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
    Repair permissions again afterward.
It helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
The more cautious even like to unplug third party peripherals (see [comment by BDaqua|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9040746#9040746]).
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned as to necessity because probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe.

Widgets are located in the folder, users/"user name"/library/widgets/
Whilst holding down the option key in finder, and selecting the library under the "go" menu, you can access your library within Lion.
If you have a working Time Machine backup, you can restore those missing files back to the widgets folder. If you don't, and your widgets folder is empty, then they are indeed gone (unless they are still in the trash). You would then have to re-download them from where they came.
If everything is there, then just click the "+" symbol at the lower left corner of the dashboard screen to add them back to the window.

  • Installing Panther 10.5 from a dual quad 3.2 tower on Macbook Pro 2.16

Sorry for my ignorance, but I don't want to take a chance of creating issues with my laptop.
I have been doing on location editing with my Macbook Pro 2.16 (with the Intel Chip), that is running on Tiger 10.4, Final Cut Studio 1.
I recently purchased a 3.2 dual Quad tower which shipped with Leopard 10.5, and have upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2.
I want to get the laptop on the same OS and FC Studio version so I can move projects between computers on external hard drives. The tower and laptop are not linked via a network and never will be.
Can I just install the Leopard 10.5 Disk that shipped with the new tower on the Macbook Pro 2.16?
I have heard that the install disk's that come with the computers are specific to that computer.
Can I then install the new upgrade of FC Studio 2 on the MacBook Pro 2.16?
Or will I experience complications that would have been avoided if I had just purchased another copy of the Panther 10.5 OS?
Thanks for any help in trying to avoid issues in the future...
    Bob

To (slightly) expand on what David told you in the other thread ...
    1. The OSX install disks shipped as OEM with computers are not compatible with another model.
    2. One OSX license, one computer.
    3. As David already noted, a laptop and a desktop can share a FCP license as long as you do not use them simultaneously.
    Cheers,

    Hi all,
My G4 won't boot up. The power light goes on then off when pressed but no chime or screen on display. I hear & feel the fan running only. I reset PMU and also changed the battery but no luck. Any ideas of what it can be? Thanks for your help
    Web dude

Thanks for the ideas MyrkridianRhapsody, but no go. It isn't booting at all.
I found a few apples sites with the following possible solutions that I will try, but my gut is telling me I fried the mother board again. I don't have the money for a new pro-mac, so I hope there is a low-cost mother-board replacement available for my 6 year old mac (any comments?).
Again, if there is someone who has successfully fixed this problem without replacing the motherboard, let me know.
As always, any additional comments/suggestions are welcome.
Will let you know my final solution.
    thank you,

Power Mac G4: Screen is Black, No Startup Tone, Drive Does Not Operate
The Power Mac G4 computer screen is black. The boot tone is not present, the drive does not operate, but the fan is running, and LED is lit.
This article covers repair procedures for authorized service providers on selected Apple products, but we have published them in the Knowledge Base for the general public for educational purposes. At this time, there are a limited number of repairs that a customer can perform and these are covered under the customer installable parts program http://www.info.apple.com/installparts. If you have not been authorized to perform these procedures, please contact Apple (800-APL-CARE in the USA) or your local authorized service provider to schedule a repair.
    Symptom
The Power Mac G4 computer screen is black. The boot tone is not present, the drive does not operate, the fan is running, and LED is lit.
    Affected Products
    o Power Mac G4
    o Macintosh Server G4
o Macintosh Server G4 with Mac OS X Server
    Solution
DANGER! This procedure exposes you to high voltages that can result in death or serious injury. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS PROCEDURE IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN CERTIFIED AS AN APPLE-AUTHORIZED TECHNICIAN.
    1. Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics): Check jumper block at J25. Make sure jumper is correct color for processor type, includes all required inner metal clips, and is installed in correct direction. See "Processor Module" in Service Source Take Apart for more information.
    2. Check video cable/card connections.
    3. Reset the Cuda chip. Refer to article 95065: "Power Macintosh G4 (PCI Graphics): Resetting the Cuda Chip"
    Solution
Press the Cuda reset button on the logic board to reset the Cuda chip. The Cuda reset button is located to the right of the battery. Note: If the computer still fails to power up, refer to article 95066: "Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics): Resetting the Logic Board".
    4. Reset the logic board. Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics): Refer to resetting the PMU in article 95037: "Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics/Gigabit Ethernet): Resetting the PMU on the Logic Board ". If you have a Power Macintosh G4 (PCI Graphics): Refer to article 95066: "Power Macintosh G4 (PCI Graphics): Resetting the Logic Board".
    Procedure
    1. Unplug the computer.
    2. Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
    3. Open the side access panel.
    4. Remove the battery from the logic board.
    5. Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
    6. Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/- direction.
    7. Reassemble the computer and test the unit.
Note: This procedure resets the computer's PRAM. Be sure to check the computer's time/date and other system parameter settings afterwards.
    5. Reseat video card.
    6. Reseat SDRAM DIMMs. Make sure DIMMs are PC-100 DIMMs.
    7. Reseat the processor module.
    8. Remove all SDRAM DIMMs and try replacing them one at a time to test. Replace any bad DIMMs.
    Resetting the PMU Chip Procedure
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95037
    a. Disconnect the power cord and check the battery in the battery holder (BT1). The battery should read 3.3 V to 3.7 V. If the battery is bad, replace the battery, wait ten seconds, and then reset the PMU (refer to the next step). If the battery is good, go to the next step.
    b. Press the PMU reset switch (S1) once on the logic board. Do not press the PMU reset switch a second time because it could stop the PMU chip from responding.
    c. Wait ten seconds before connecting the power cord and turning the computer on. If the computer turns on, go to the next step. If the computer does not turn on, there is something else wrong with the computer.
    d. Run MacTest Pro and return the computer to the customer.
Note: This entire procedure resets the computer's PRAM. Be sure to reset the computer's time, date, and other system parameter settings before returning the computer to the customer.
    9. Replace video card.
    10. Replace processor module.
    11. Replace logic board.
    12. Replace the power supply.
It is always worth resetting the pram
as well by holding down alt-apple-p-r at the same time immediately after
    booting the machine up.

  • Kernel Panic on Ancient G4 Tower

Kernel Panic on Ancient G4 Mirror Front Tower (PowerMac I believe). I'm trying to wipe my old G4 to sell, but moved some files I shouldn't have and restarted and now I'm stuck in a kernel panic. I've copied all my files over already so I'm okay with erasing the drive. I have no startup CD, but I do have a Snow Leopard CD that I bought for my iMac. I think I'm in an earlier version of OSX though (10.3 or earlier). I just want to be able to tell someone the drive is functional. Any ideas? Thanks!

The 10.6 installer disk is too new for any PowerMac.
Unfortunately kernel panics can be due to bad RAM, or bad peripherals, bad directory, or the wrong system installed.
Your best bet is to bring the machine into a Mac usergroup and ask if anyone has the installation disks for it.
The 10.4.6 retail installer if you can find it should help.

  • Trying to reinstall OS 9.2 with Tiger

I recently reinstalled Tiger on my Mirror door G4. When I booted into Classic, it was missing many Control Panels and Apple Menu Items, like Mouse and Network Browser, and god knows what else. I'd like to boot into a complete version of OS 9 because I want to network to my old faithful G3 beige tower which is running OS 8.6. When I tried to reinstall OS9 using the disks that came with the Mirror Door, it said installation was complete after only 1 of the 4 disks and still missed critical components. Annoyingly, these disks do say that OS 10.2 needs to be on the hard disk running the installation disks. (Was the design of these original install disks really so short sighted?)
G4 mirror door tower   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   1.25 gHz Dual Processor, Dual Boot

It turns out, according to Apple documentation, that you have to reinstall OS10.2 in order to install the OS9.2 on the original installation disks, and then reinstall Tiger. This sounds disastrous. Instead, I swapped out a system folder from a backup from before the last time I did a clean installation (which was in June). This seemed risky and potentially stupid, but not as stupid as reinstalling OS10.2. It turns out so far it's worked ok, although I did spend some time in Disk First Aid.
