Installing OS X on G3 iMac

I have an old G3 iMac that is running OS 9.2. I'd like to upgrade to OS X.
Hardware info: G3 @ 333MHz, 196MB Ram, Tray CD-ROM Drive, USB 1.1 ports (no firewire).
I'm running a LAN and can connect to this machine from my MacBook Pro.
As I understand it, OS 10.3.9 is the most advanced version I can install on my iMac. However, almost all of the Panther software for sale on Ebay is on DVD.
Is there a way to use a DVD install disc with my iMac? Disc copy on CDs? Boot the iMac from the OS 9 CD and drag a disc image of the panther DVD over the LAN? Anything.
Thanks.

First, your computer will require a firmware update: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60384. The update can only be installed while booted directly into OS 9.1 - 9.2.2.
You will need more RAM. You will not have satisfactory performance with less than 384 MBs of RAM. You will need at least 8 GBs of free space to install OS X.
Installing on a PowerBook G3 Series, an original Power Macintosh G3, or an iMac
If you see a message when you select the destination disk that you need to install Mac OS X on a partition completely within the first 8 GB of disk space, choose Open Disk Utility from the Installer menu, then click Partition to see the partitions of your disk. The first partition is the top one. Select it and make sure it is 8 GB or less in size. If the first partition is larger than 8 GB or your hard disk only has one partition that is larger than 8 GB, you need to partition your disk again. Partitioning the disk erases the entire hard disk, so be sure to back up your files first.
Panther is distributed on CDs not DVDs. You must boot the iMac directly from the Panther Installer Disc using the iMac's internal optical drive. You can purchase a Panther installer package on eBay or from www.applerescue.com. Panther comes on three CDs that have black labels with a large gray "X". Do not purchase anything offered on a single DVD or discs that have gray labels or discs that have the word "Upgrade" on the label. None of these will work.
Do not expect superior performance on your hardware. The iMac you have was designed long before OS X was ever released. It has neither the CPU nor video horsepower for OS X, and OS X will run slower than OS 9.
You may need to replace the internal PRAM backup battery if it's never been replaced. If the battery is weak or dead (likely after this much time) you may have considerable trouble trying to install OS X.

Without a bootable backup/clone or a Time Machine backup of your previous Snow Leopard installation or a saved copy of Lion's install app, you'll have to upgrade your Leopard volume to Snow Leopard (10.6.6+) so you can waste another hour or more DLing the Lion thing again.

    Thanks,

    You require Windows 7.
Windows 7 is the same and will run the same as it would on a Windows computer. All programs that run on a windows computer will run on your Windows once installed. You will need anti virus software for your Windows partition. Microsoft Security Essentials is free and it works well.
Read the help files before installing http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/.

  • I just installed iLife on my new Imac version 10.8.2 and now I can't open my iPhoto app.  It says that I Photo is damaged or incomplete.  What do I do to restore my iPhoto and pictures!

I just installed iLife on my new iMac 10.8.2 version and now I can't open my iPhoto app.  It says it is damaged or incomplete.  What can I do to get it back along with all of my picutures?  I was told by an Apple employee at my one to one training that it was OK to install iLife to get the iDVD that I wanted. Help!

I have installed iLife a few times and because of photostream, the version on the disc must be updated.  Software update usually takes care of it.  It sounds like you installed an old version over a new version.  I've not tried that.
You have a late 2012 machine, if you open the Mac app store from the dock, you should be able to go to the purchased tab and download/install the right version of iphoto.  Honestly, you should not have used that disc on this new of mac or at least only installed iDVD & iWeb but not garageband, iphoto, and iMovie.
If the Mac App Store shows iphoto as installed already, drag the app from your applications folder to the trash and reinstall it again from the Mac App Store.  That is the version you need.  You may find garageband and imovie have similar problems.
    good luck.
PS.  your photos are in your photo folder in your home folder.  don't touch those, I'm talking about the app "iphoto" in the applications folder.

  • Have installed 10.10 on my iMac (mid 2007) 2.4 GHz 2Gb memory which has slowed to a crawl

have installed 10.10 on my iMac (mid 2007) 2.4 GHz me 2 GB which has slowed to a crawl

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I just installed Mountain Lion on my iMac that was previously running Snow Leopard. Bugt I found that some key applications no longer work, so I would like to go back to snow Leopard. I can't use time machine backups for this. what can I do?

I just installed Mountain Lion on my iMac. But In was dismayed to find that my Canon scanner software (Canoscan LIDE500F)no longer works. Nor do any of my MS offce applications. I tried to use time machine to reinstall Snow Leopard (my previous operating system), but unfortunately my time machine backups did not include system software. Also, the original system install disk that came with my iMac would not allow me to install Snow Leopard in place of Mountain Lion. I would appreciate it if somebody could tell me how to solve this problem.

The reason your Office doesn't work is because it is PowerPC code. If you will upgrade the 2004 Office to 2011 Office then that will work.
I don't understand how you managed to get your Time Machine backup to not backup the system.
Now if you still what to downgrade you will have to erase the disk and reinstall Snow Leopard. Most likely all of your application and then restore your data from Time Machine.
To me it sounds like it would be easier to upgrade your software and stay with Mountain Lion instead.

  • I have installed Airport Extreme on my iMac, but want to extend the wireless network with Airport Express. Everything is fine until I try to select Extend the wireless network.  I select Extend Wireless network but have no success. Ideas?

I have installed Airport Extreme on my iMac, but want to extend the wireless to rooms with a weak signal.  The internet connection is fine with the basic setup. As soon as I go into Airport Utility to select Extend Wireless Network and fill in what I believe is proper information, I get an error message that Airport Extreme no longer has an IP address, the internet connection is broken, and under Wireless, that there is a wireless network in existence that can't be found. Rebooting the modem only brings the Airport Extreme back to the starting gate so that the internet is once again available.  I assumed (naively) that with the All Mac All-the-Time context, adding Airport Express would truly be Plug and Play.   I got the plug, but no play.  I asked a Comcast technical specialist about it and he said that I needed to reset the Airport Express settings back to their default, factory status.  I looked that process up online and found out that the way to do that was to hold down the reset button, then plug Airport Express into the socket and wait for the green light to flash four times.  Then wait 45 seconds and the default settings will return.  I did all that, only to find out that after the initial flash of green, green never appeared again.  I got a fast flashing yellow light, followed by the light going off.  Apparently this didn't reset it properly.  So, after hours trying to get this system to work, I appeal to someone who can see through this mess and provide the key to success!

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
    Correct?
    See this Apple document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
The wireless unit on the right of the diagram can be either of the newer Apple base stations.
    Extreme, Express, Time Capsule

  • I have read various threads on installing Win XP on my iMac

    Hi All
I have read various threads on installing Win XP on my iMac, i have tried on 2 seperate ocations to install win XP Pro on the partition created by bootcamp but in each instance the install failed. I get to the part of the installation where you select the partition to install win xp and when i select that partition i get partition not recognised please click enter to go back and choose a different partition.
To get the install to accept the partition i need to reformat it, and after doing this when the computer reboots it says please choose any key to boot from cd but in doing so the install starts all over again, or if i don't press a key and let the installation continue as i would on a normal pc the computer just freezes and the installation fails.
The couple of times i have tried this i have ended up reinstalling my mac os again, i don't want to go through all this again so if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

If this is your issue, search these forums (all dates) for "Slipstreaming" to learn how to convert your CD plus a blank CD into a Win XP SP2 disk.
I tried slipstreaming following the instructions I found on this forum, with no luck. It didn't recognize it as any kind of Windows install disk.

  • How do I install Photoshop Express on my iMac? (Can I install it on my iMac?)

I'm a writer working on a book, and I need Photoshop Express (if it's possible) to view the size/resolution of image files that I plan to use in the book.
I have a contractual deadline of this coming Monday, February 9, to get these photos to my editor in the high-resolution form that they specify.
Can I do this with Photoshop Express?
Also, can I install Photoshop Express on my iMac (running OS X version 10.6.8....yeah, I know it's an old OS, but I don't want to do an OS upgrade while I have a pook project in the works.)
Please let me know ASAP...I'd like to get these images sorted out and ready to send to my editors no later than this coming Friday, February 6.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Photoshop Express is an iOS app, not an OSX program. And no, you can't create print-ready imagery with it. You are looking completely in the wrong place. Find someone to take care of your images or send the raw files to your publisher so they can have their own pre-press team working on them.
