Installing OS X on Mac without no current operating system?.
I recently received a 27" iMac, however the hard drive was completely wiped before I got it. When I turn it on, all I see is a flashing grey folder with a question mark. Based on research, I guess I need to install a operating system on this iMac. How do I go about this? I'm having trouble understanding how to get an OS and install it. I also cannot find a serial number underneath the computer and cannot access it on the computer since it will not start up
The earliest 27" iMacs created began in 2009, so i'm assuming its from around then if that helps

You may have to contact Apple (main support or applecare) to see if there was any software on DVD media for that model, if there is no optical drive slot, then it likely shipped with Lion 10.7 installed, but may have had backup media discs. Those would be available by serial number and product model number descriptions; so if you do call or contact Apple, have those indentifiers handy. These may be on the foot of the iMac, bottom of the stand.
Also, it may not be legit. Find serial numbers - other than logic board:

The hard disk drive may be accessed by another Mac, if the computer has a Thunderbolt port and if you have a Thunderbolt to FireWire cable (or thunderbolt-thunderbolt?) so as to use another Mac to go into the iMac and check the HDD formatting, etc. Target Disk Mode. And perhaps be able to go to the Mac Apps Store to get a suitable OS X download. Usually those require a base system, so that is a hitch, so whatever the computer had on the hard disk drive in Recovery partition (if totally erased) would be needed. Online Recovery may work.
Since my antiques do not use Recovery, you may have to read up on that option.

So first how did you originally purchase Aperture? App Store, DVD or Unlocked Trial version.
If you purchased it from the App store if you log into the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to purchase Aperture then you will be able to install it on other systems besides the one you originally installed it on. Even though the button says Purchase you will not be charged again as lolongnd as this is the same Apple ID you used the first time.

Mavericks is no longer available from Apple — unless you purchase an older refurb unit from Apple that still has it installed. Yosemite 10.10.0 (now 10.10.2) superseded it. Mavericks came with my May 2014 MacBook Air, and I had no issues with Mavericks, or applications on it. I subsequently upgraded to Yosemite, because I prefer to stay current — and have had no issues with Yosemite either.

You first must upgrade to Snow Leopard. In order to upgrade to Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks you first must upgrade to Snow Leopard. Your model should be able to run Mavericks which you can download for free.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
Snow Leopard General Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
2. 1GB of memory
3. 5GB of available disk space
4. DVD drive for installation
5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;

Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

Remember to do the following before starting the upgrade process:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Restart the computer from the Apple menu.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. -

Okay I use iPhoto 6 on an older mac and don't want to upgrade past 10.4.11. Can I upgrade iPhoto without the newer operating system? For the life of me I can't get iPhoto to recognize my camera reliably - although it does sometimes. Any advice, help?
The latest version of iPhoto which can operation with OS X 10.4.11 is iPhoto 7 which is part of iLife 08. You might be able to find a copy of iLIfe 08 on Amazon.com or Ebay.com.

After using "migration assistant" from my old iMac to my new iMac, some tools stick while using Photoshop CS 6 Extended. My current operation system is 10.10 Yosemite. I was wondering if UN installing then RE installing CS 6 might solve the problem. If this is recommended, I would need complete instructions on doing this. I have there serial number for the product.
using migration assistant is problematic.
at this point yes, you should uninstall everything migrated, clean and then reinstall properly using the installation files.

I've contacted the seller said the store did not provide for the apple os. Actually, Mavericks is the current version of OS X replacing Mountain Lion. Mavericks will be replaced later this year by Yosemite. The upgrade to Mavericks is free. You can download the installer from the App Store.

Does anyone know if there is a way to share files between Mavericks and Mac OS 9.1 operating system? When I try to connect from my iMac I get a window that says "The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported." Is there a work-around to this problem or is it just not possible? It would be largly appriciated for a solutin beings my business is a small town newspaper, and we have some important files on the older computer that need to be acessed daily.

Or since both OS 9 and OS X can do SMB Windows sharing you could use that protocol to share files from one to the other.
Doesn't really matter what OS you are using. Mac OS/OS X shar files with Windows computers of all types and versions of Windows so the same applies for the different versions of Mac OS/OS X.
Each Operating System takes care of reading and writing files to there respective file formats of the hard drives so that does not have to be the same. They both just have to be able to do Ethernet with the same files sharing protocol. -

You cannot get Mavericks because it has been replaced by Yosemite. Your machine will work just fine with Yosemite, but you don't have to upgrade if you prefer not to.
You should always maintain a backup. Hard drives fail, data are lost. A backup is a security blanket for your data.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
3. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least double the
capacity of the drive(s) it backs up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup

You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;

All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver. -
