Installing OS X Yosemite Taking So Long

I am trying to install OS X Yosemite in my macbook pro but it is showing about 123 hours and 8 minutes remaining to download additional components. Is there any way I make this faster? Why is it taking so long?

It's been a few days since the original post.  If you use Software Update again now, do you still have this problem?
Also, what is the name and version number of the update?  If you can't get Software Update to do it for some reason, you can search for that update on Apple Support, then download and install it manually.
Before you do that, run Disk Utility (which is on Applications/Utilities).  Select "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar and go to the First Aid tab.  Click Verify Disk.  This will check to make sure there is nothing is wrong with your startup disk.  If there is a problem reported, that may be causing the problem with Software Update.

  • IPhoto import (Yosemite) taking a long time; seems to be stuck in "Finishing import-"

I recently did a nuke & pave of my MacBook Pro (late 2013) and am importing and installing software. I had probably close to 200,000 photos (if not more) that were just imported, and I've been at "Finishing Import…" for an hour or more. As I recall, that's normal, but I could use some reassurance that I should just let it continue as-is. (I will come back & update/change this if it finishes anytime soon).

1 - you should never import that many photos at once
2 - not sure what a "nuke and pave" is but in any case you never want to import an old library - you simply move it to the pictures folder and open it- no importing involved
3 - what version of iPhoto and of the OS do you have
4 - exactly what have you done?

After installing the new Yosemite OS on my iMac I can no longer send email. I can receive email, but not send. I use gmail and can send email on the gmail (google) site, but not on "mail" on my iMac. Any others with this problem? What should we do?

My gmail, which is correctly configured for Mail with gmail SMTP and Google IMAP, works for awhile on Mail, which I leave open while working on other applications. But several times a day I get msg from Google: "We recently blocked a sign-in attempt to your Google Account" . . . and requiring me to verify my account details, re-enter passwords, confirm security settings (or change them from "disable" to "enable less secure methods" and so on). In Mail I also have tried "taking all accounts online", and re-entering my gmail password inside Mail account settings. These steps successfully re-set comms between gmail and Mail ... for awhile, then it happens again. Enough occurrences over a work day that I just quit Mail and revert to accessing gmail directly. Apple Care advisor and an Apple knowledge base article say that Apple can't deal with this, as gmail is third-party app, and they refer me to gmail, and so far I've found nothing helpful there.
From today I also have several instances of a window saying "Mail has unexpectedly closed" and asking me to Re-open it.
I also use Yahoo mail, which stops working with Mac Mail at the same time as gmail, but I do not receive notices to re-verify from Yahoo.
I recently upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite. The Mail problem happened occasionally with Mavericks but is far more frequent with Yosemite.

After installing Yosemite iWork09 no longer works.  Do I need to purchase an upgrade?

All of the iWork 09 apps work for me with Yosemite.  Try the following:
1 - delete all files with iWork in the file name from your User/Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete all files with iWork in the file name from your User/Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost folder.
3 - delete all items (files or folders) with iWork in the name from your User/Home/Library/Caches folder.
4 - reboot and try the iWork apps again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder. This will also work for Mavericks and Yosemite.
For  Mavericks and Yosemite  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring up this window:

  • Downloaded and installed os x yosemite and now mac book pro will not restart? How long should this take? Is there something wrong? Please helpthanks in advance

MAc book pro. I have downloaded and installed os x yosemite now mac book pro will not start? How long should it take? Is there something wrong?

The 2 computers here took about 45 minutes to an hour each.
The best thing to do is give it more time. If it gets too ridiculous, shutdown using the power button and then restart. Check  menu/About This Mac to see if it is installed.

  • Tried to install a new game but got error message "You can't open the application "XIII Install" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."  I have since read that Yosemite doesn't have the program. What can I do?

Tried to install a new game that I bought (Xiii) for my MBP. All system req have been met and exceeded, however when trying to install it I get an error message saying "You can’t open the application “XIII Install” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
I have since read online that the operating software Yosemite has got rid of PowerPC applications, meaning I can't install my new game.
Is there anything simple that I can do to get this game to work. I'll be gutted if not as I have opened the game therefore the shop will not give a full refund, I'm sure .
    Regards
    Simon

A lot longer ago than that. PowerPC apps haven't been supported since Lion, 10.7.x.
You may have just purchased the game, but the developers obviously haven't kept up to date with the requirements for newer versions of the Mac OS.
You have three options, depending on how old your Mac is.
    1) If it were ever able to boot directly to Snow Leopard, you could create a separate partition and install SL onto that partition. Make sure to turn on the option during the installation to install Rosetta. That is OS X's PPC emulator.
    2) If your Mac is too new to install Snow Leopard, then you can purchase and install Snow Leopard Server within a VM, such as Parallels, VirtualBox, or Vmware.
    3) Use a separate older Mac for running outdated software.

    Hi Thr,
Its a java version problem, 11.1.2 is now using java 1.6 and in earlier version supports 1.5.
Open control panel then java, click the java tab and view the jnlp, it is most likley tht you have a 1.6 version enabled, simply just untick the 1.6 and enable 1.5, if not then download 1.5 JRE from sun.
    Cheers...!!!

  • Pages is taking annoyingly long to download and install. Any of you faced similar problems while installing it?

ages is taking annoyingly long to download and install. Any of you faced similar problems while installing it?

Who knows what "ages" means to you, or what speed Internet connection you have, or what else is happening on your computer or network.
Pages/iWork are not small so it can take a while. Sometimes heavy demand at the Apple end can slow their server as well.

  • Update is taking too long to install

I'm in the process of installing an update to iTunes (11.0.4) and what I think is a security update on my MBP. However, the installation process is taking too long. First, it was stuck for about 2 hours on "registering updated components", and now (for the last hour) I'm seeing a blue screen with the spinning gear. Should I just keep waiting? Has anyone had a similar experience?

    zornie,
Try going to safari>preferences, general tab, and setting the "save downloaded files to your desktop (if desktop is not in the drop down menu, click other then select desktop from the left side bar). This will download the update to your dektop as a stand alone installer. Also if for some reason the download is interupted you can click the download icon on the desktop and it will resume where it left off. When the download is complete double click the icon/installer package and follow the prompts. Do them one at a time. (Thsi is not using software update, which can some times get corrupted during DL, especially if your are doing it wireless)
    Security update:

    iTunes:

    Hope this helps

  • It is taking too long to login after i installed kaspersky

MY macbook air was working fine but after i installed kaspersky internet security and restarted it is it taking too long to login.. What do i do?

Try restarting in Safe Mode: Starting up in Safe Mode
Try disabling your Login Items: If you think you have incompatible login items
Both are temporary measures. Either one may allow you to log in so that you can uninstall Kaspersky. If you are unable to log in write back for additional instructions.
To reboot normally restart your Mac and log in without holding any keys.
