Installing OS9 on a new ibook with OS 10.4.6

Hi there,
I just purchased a brand new ibook and want to be able to run OS9 on it to access some older programs of mine. It works just fine on the G4 computer I have as well as the imac G5 that I have at work. I am running various versions of OSX on the IMAC G5, G4, and the iBook. All I did was copy the system folder of OS9 onto my portable hard drive and onto the imac G5 and it worked great. It registered in the system preferences and started up just fine
For some reason I cannot do the same thing with my iBook in order to run OS9. There is no additional software disc, only the os10 install discs.
Is there any way I can instal my OS9 system folder so that it shows up in my system preferences like it does on the other two computers I have? Is there something I am missing when copying the folder over?

There is a 3rd party app (not supported by Apple) called SheepShaver, that allows you to run MacOS 7.5.2 thru MacOS 9.0.4 in it's own window, in a similar set up to VPC & Parallels Desktop

Install 10.3 on an iBook with no DVD

Hi,
for some reason, I upgraded my 300MHz iBook from 3 Gb to a 100Gb. This may sound crazy, but I wanted to continue using this really cool computer, and its new HDD may serve as a backup disk. The problem now is to get 10.3 on it.
I've been surfing through the posts, so I know my iBook won't boot from my external LaCie DVD drive. What are my options?
If the only solution is to install a DVD drive instead of the CD-ROM drive, is that possible? What kind of drives will fit? Is there a less costly way?

Hello Thomas here. When it comes to Clamshells there is not much i have not done. I have an Indigo with a Slot loading superdrive, 60gb drive, LCD from a new ibook and 10.4.7
I just sold a Graphite 366 with a slot loading combo drive. Although it can't play DVD's it can read from them.
As an experiment I took a drive with 10.4 on it and slotted it into an old blueberry. Suprise it booted. Even though it did not have Firewire.
You can fit all types of optical drives into these machines. The only difference is the location of the ribbon. As long as you have the old optical drive from the Clamshell and the new slot loader you can take the ribbon from the clamshell drive with a hairdryer.
You can't put to much pressure on the top of the new slot loader though or the cd will jam. It all fits perfectly with no butchering.

How can I install iWork '09 on new MacBook with Lion?

I have an install DVD for iWork '09 (9.0.3), and I've been running iWork on my iMac for several years without a problem, even after upgrading to Lion. Now I have a new MacBook Air with Lion preloaded and am trying to install iWork on the new machine. I was able to install from the DVD using drive sharing, but when I try to open Pages, Numbers or Keynote, I get a message that says "Pages cannot be opened because of a problem" -- presumably because I need to update iWork for Lion. After downloading the iWork 9.1 update, I tried to open it but get an error message that says "A newer version of Keynote has already been installed."
This doesn't make sense to me, since the version I installed from the DVD is definitely older. How can I update iWork to run on my new machine?
By the way, I tried just copying the programs from my iMac with AirDrop, and I get the first error message I mentioned above.

I don't know why the Drive Sharing idea didn't work. I can think of reasons that copying with AirDrop wouldn't work.
At some point you may just want to give up and purchase Pages using the Mac App Store. It's ridiculously cheap and easy.
I worry that you have so much inoperable iWork stuff on this computer that it needs a good clean-up, whichever way you decide to go.
Yvan Koenig has a script to do the purging of old copies of iWork files that you can run before you make any more attempts at installing iWork or any of its components. It the last item on this page as of this writing...

Used to be the case but no longer. Adobe's process is now much simpler.
All software versions (whether full or upgrades) include the full program code. The serial number you enter tells the installer if it's an upgrade or a full version.
Download the Lightroom 4.4.1 trial from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5599
Install it then enter your LR 4 serial number. The installer will then ask for an earlier version serial. Enter your LR3 serial and the install will complete.

Installing CS2Premium upgrade onto new laptop with Windows 8

I am trying to install a Creative Suite 2 Premium upgrade onto a new laptop with Windows 8. The upgrade is from Photoshop 5.0, which I also have the original discs for, but is not installed on this new laptop. Therefore, the upgrade is not being recognized. I tried putting the 5.0 disc in and having the installation search for it as verification, but that wasn't working. I realize both of these programs are ancient, but they are what I have. So be it. :-) Can someone help me figure out how to get my CS2 upgrade to install?

Installing desktop software on new laptop with Vista

I had a laptop with XP and everything worked fine. Got a new one with Vista and now the software will not install. It did install properly (at least I thought) once, but then would not sync with the device. I tried 4.2 and I tried 4.7, both from the Blackberry site. I keep getting the error message "windows is shutting down the desktop software installation and will notify you of a solution". This is after 20-45 minutes of downloading. My device is a Verizon Curve. Any thoughts?

I installed it twice each time under program file as it wouldn't recognize the program file(x64) folder. I created an adobe folder under program file and installed there which when perfectly well including name, serial number until disc 3 of CS2 suite.
Interestingly when I opened photoshop it showed the correct name and serial number but the error statement I first commented showed.
Perhaps I am just going to have to spring for CS4

Installing os9 on a new disk.

hi guys, i hope someone can help with this.

atm, have three ata HDDs: the original os9 boot(quantum 30gb) that came with the machine.
a second seagate 30gb which has osx.4.8. on it and is my system drive.
a third seagate 120gb which has about six partitions including a second osx4.8. for mainentance. this is slaved to the cd rom bus and is housed up the top.
my problem: i want to replace the os9 original drive with another seagate 120gb HDD, and have a bootable os9 on it.
i have tested this by installing another os9 partition on the current third drive(120gb) above but it won't boot to it. the startup disc panel sees it(osx) but it stalls at the (wrong) osx start up screen after selecting and restarting.
also tried booting to the original os9 partition and installing from there but i get error messages and have to abort.
if i try from osx, it recognises the disk but want to start classic up.
atm, i can boot from all three as usual now, but what i want to do is simply replace the original quantum with the bigger seagate and have os9 independant and bootable like it is now.

Yes, you should be able to do that. That's what eww was referring to as a Finder copy - drag the System Folder from one drive to the other, let Finder copy it to the destination drive.
That's how I commonly do replications of OS 9 - it works with firewire drives as well as with internal drives. It's a good idea to also copy the Documents and the Applications (Mac OS 9) folders at the same time.
There is a bit of fixing to do afterwards - aliases in particular retain old pathnames (the pathnames are absolute, rather than relative). For example, the (common) alias to Sherlock in the Apple menu will still point to an original on the source drive, rather than to an original on the destination drive. Fortunately there's a button in the Get Info window for an alias to allow the selection of a new original for the alias. Other aliases that may be affected the same way can be found in the Application Support folder in the System Folder.
The reason I suggested booting to a CD, or to some OS 9, was to check whether OS 9 drivers had been installed on the partition in question - if OSX's Disk Utility had been used to format the drive, the option to install OS 9 drivers may not have been selected by default. In the absence of those drivers the volume can not be mounted by OS 9 - which means it will fail to boot to OS 9 on such a partition.

Have a new imac installed with Mavericks and iMovie 10.0.2. Prefer the 9 version on my older "white" imac. Can I use migration assistant to bring over version 9 but still keep 10 on? If yes, is new imac the source or target?

Installing studio UPGRADE on new imac with no Logic installed.

Been running Logic Pro (7) on an old mac and have now bought a lovely new imac and also purchased upgrade to Logic Studio.
Do I need to install old Logic Pro before using the Studio upgrade discs? Or can I go straight to the Studio installation and simply plug in the dongle/key into the usb at the appropriate time?
I'm assuming because the old Pro version is pre-intel etc it is a somewhat redundant exercise to load it. But I don't want the Studio installation to stall because it 'can't find' a valid version of Logic to upgrade from.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's even the same disk just labeled differently.
I'm almost positive it is. In other words, it's not the install disk that makes the package an upgrade or full version, it's the license which is tied to the serial number.
If, theoretically, you owned an upgrade disk with serial, and a full version disk with serial, and you installed from one disk, but typed in the serial number that came with the other disk, you'd end up with a perfectly good install that was tied to whatever serial you put in. I don't think it'd matter what disk you used.

Installed PSE 13 on new computer with PSE 11

I used Laplink PC Mover to move contents of my old computer to a new computer. That included PSE 11. When I tried to open PSE 11, it didn't open. Decided to "upgrade" to PSE 13. I bought and downloaded and installed PSE 13. Organizer in PSE 13 opens, but shows no photos, albums, people, tags, etc. All the pictures transferred. I can find them using explorer. They don't show up in Organizer, and I don't want to lose the tags, captions, etc.
It ought to be easier.

Why can't I install CS5 extended on new iMac with my serial number?

All I wanted to do was take the serial number from my CS5 extended and install PS 5 on my new iMac (they don't have disc drives anymore). My serial number however is 20 digits and it doesn't work?? It comes up shy of numbers. Can someone explain how this can be possible? I refuse to rent CS5 when I already have a lisc. Thanks.

You need to get the serial number from your Adobe account at the corporate web site, once there go to "My Products". You can get the s/n from there.
Adobe applications show you intentionally truncated serial numbers, with only 20 digits as you noted. The full s/n are 24-digits long. This is done on purpose, so as not to encourage software piracy.

Installing windows 7 on new SSD with no backup or disc

Hi,
My toshiba c660d-1c6 recently crashed big time!
Won't boot at all, hdd (320GB) seems to have died.
Just get a windows boot manager message saying that its encountered a problem, unexpected error etc.
Can't do a hdd recovery and it won't go into the repair menu (F8).
I am therefore looking at replacing it with a new ssd, but how easy will I be able to install windows 7 once I get this new ssd? Could I get a 120GB ssd and use it in my laptop?
I don't have any backups or discs to use, only my win 7 product key on the underside of the laptop.
Any suggestions?

If you failed to burn them, you can obtain recovery discs from Toshiba. You can use those to restore to any internal drive.

I bought the disk Photoshop CS6 extended how do I install it on an new comp with no disk drive?

I bought Adobe Photoshop CS6 and installed the disk on my old computer. How do I install the program onto my new computer since I do not have a disk drive to put the cd into? There is nothing on the website that I can find to help me....I really enjoy the program and didnt even realize I didnt have a disk drive in this computer....(I know its something I should have known before I bought the computer....but it slipped my mind till now when I actually need it.)
