Installing OSX 10.4 from scratch??

Hi All,
Recently I bought a new hard drive, and have copied all my files i want to keep onto DVD's. I would like to start from scratch again with the new hard drive, does anyone have any tips/instructions on how to install OSX 10.4? I have the 2 startup disks that came with my MacBook. Is it just these 2 i need to install the whole system? Do I need to partition the drive or anything?
Any help would be great.
Many thanks.

Hi all, thanks for the responses.
although I am having a bit of trouble with this:
'3. Click the Erase tab.
*4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.*
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.'
I can't see the disclosure tab? What is it you mean by that??
The way I have understood doing this installation so far, is this. Is this right?:
1. on inserting the disc, and selecting the language, i go onto disk utility.
(according to http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html , i don't need to go onto the erase tab, as 'If you are going to partition your new drive you can skip down to the Partition section below, as when you partition your hard drive, you will reformat the drive during the partition process.' Is this right?)
2. i go onto partitioning, select my one partition i want to make, select it from the big box to the left, click to format as mac os extended (journaled)
3. click the partition button, and wait for this to finish.
4. carry on installing tiger as i've finished formatting/partiting.
does this sound right? if not, where have i got it wrong, and what do i need to change?

  • Problem installing OSX 10.4 from Firewire DVD drive

Hi, I'd be very grateful if anyone can help... I've been trying to install OSX 10.4 from DVD loaded in an external Firewire Lacie DVD drive and haven't been successful yet. I have tried instructing startup from the DVD in System Preferences, holding Option on startup and selecting the DVD and also holding 't' on startup, which I was informed forced startup from an external Firewire device (this resulted in a large Firewire logo floating round the screen but after 10 minutes or so hadn't progressed into full startup). Having read some bits of info found on Apple support I can see there is some issue about installing OSX 10.4 from a DVD drive other than an internal Apple drive (although I can't see any explanation why). Could someone please let me know if there is another way of doing this? – I mainly want to get 10.4 installed because I want to get a new ipod which requires 10.4 rather than 10.3. Thanks very much, Sam

Some external DVD drives support startup. Some do not.
Holding down the T key at startup makes the Mac go into FireWire Target Disk Mode. It will not help you start up from the DVD drive.
If you have another Mac with FireWire and a DVD drive, you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to mount your Mac's hard drive on the other Mac's desktop. Then, you can use that other Mac to startup from the DVD and run the installer, pointing to your Mac's hard drive for the installation.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
I don't know of any other way, if the external DVD drive does not support start up.

  • Didnt used check disk utility on install & want to reinstall from scratch

Things are buggy so figured a reinstall this time using the Check disk utlity thingy - anyone know what I need to do?

OK, I think we can narrow this down.
My first inclination is to think that you might have some directory corruption that's interfering with how your Mac is running. The comment above to back up your data is right on. Do that first.
Once that's done, try booting to your install disk, selecting Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, and then select your hard drive. Pick "Verify disk," and if it needs repair, choose "Repair disk" - this may resolve the issue.
Look and see if you have any third party addons that need updating, or applications that run at login (you can find them in System Preferences, Accounts, login items) and disable them. See if that helps.
If worse comes to worst, you may need to erase your drive and reinstall from scratch, and then restore from your backup, but let's see how the other steps go first.
The "Check Install Disk" is verifying the DVD, not your hard drive, so that's not likely to help at all in this situation.
Post back after running Disk Utility and let us know the results.

  • HELP Installing osx 10.4 from retail disk onto Powerbook G4

My powerbook G4 is giving me trouble.
I am using a retail Tiger OSX 10.4 disk. I have used it before on a powerbook and I know it works. It's a retail disk.
The installation goes great, starts up fine, gets through the installer, verifies the disk is a good disk, and goes almost 100 percent through the installation until...  it just says, "the installation was not successful" and tha's it! it gives me one option to "retry" and that's all.
So I retry. and that same thing happens (after 45 mins of acting like it's gonna work, right before completion it wimps out)
    HELP!!!
    what do i do?
The powerbook was given to me by a friend who said "someone's newphew's cousin's friend deleted everything and now it don't work, here ya go!"
    Please Help

Boot from the install disk and find utilities in the menubar. Then run First Aid/ Verify Disk and then Repair disk if necessary. You can also do a safe boot which will do essentially the same check. It is likely you have a hard drive that is failing which is not fixable.

  • After installing 10.7.2 from scratch, permission errors remain

Hey, this is a summery of what have happened:
    1. upgraded to Lion from SL (via AppStore)
    2. have played with 'get info' > 'apply to all enclosed items'  :/
    3. things have gone messy, slow, permission errors. example:
(Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.)
    4. booted from DVD of Lion dmg.
then, formatted and performed a clean install.
(backed up to a new disk image with CCC, just in case)
    5. Notice that I did not copy anything or downloaded/installed a single file/application yet.
after the so called 'clean' install, I've ran the disk utility to verify permissions again (both from DVD and from cmd+R - recovery partition).
still I get the warning about ARDAgent, still verifying and repairing permission takes 2-3 minutes. with only the OS X installed on HDD.
    6. Got this advice from several boards:
Open Terminal as an admin user.
    type in the following:
    sudo chmod -RN ~
you will have to authenticate with a non-blank password.
then follow the steps of resetting the ACLs.
I have done this, and got: Failed to clear ACL on file ubiquity.socket: Invalid argument
Then, booted from DVD, in terminal typed: 'resetpassword' and chose the HDD and "user" and clicked on 'reset password and ACLs'.
    restarted, Spotlight did index againg.
    7. still permission errors, so I didn't copy anything back yet, waiting for help to get the right way or restoring to default/formatting again.
    My questions are:
    1. Did I do everything right? Is it possible to perform a clean install from the DVD that I made?
    2. If so, shouldn't it cancel all the ACLs problems and reset them to the default?
    3. Is there a way to make a real 100% clean install of 10.7.2, with erasing even the recovery partition (if it has to do with ACLs)?
    4. if and when this will be solved, I will need to copy back my files and folders from external FW800 WesternDigital,
will I need to reset their permissions too somehow? It could cause more problems with the ACLs.
    thank you very much.

    baltwo,
I have a lion clone. so I guess there is no reason to install lion upon it's own clone.
anyways, how is it possible that after the complete format, the ACL problem remains.
what about removing the recovery partition.
the reason I want it to be done is to get rid of the problems I had with the new installation, tham I'm afraid will not be fixed otherwise: crashing apple applications (safari quitted unexpectedly), slow performance, computer freezes, GUI lags (copying 138 items to another folder stucks and I have to relounch finder) and other animation bugs at almost everywhere on the system.
restoring lion clone and turning on the time machine sounds like the last option right now...
and I'll be happy to hear opinions about what to do with the backed up data on the external hdd permissions.

  • Install MSA 50 SP09 from scratch - a madness

    Hi all,
Has anyone try to install CRM 5.0 SP09 ?? After losing one day and a half I don't have any more ideas..
    The prerequisites are clear:
    <b>Windows XP SP2</b>
    <b>JSDK & JRE 1.4.2_XX</b> (I'm using 09 but tried with 05,07 and 15)
<b>SQL Server 2005 Express Edition</b> (with some additional services enabled)
<b>.NET 2.0</b> (uninstalling any previous version)
After selecting the solution (<b>Demo version</b> but not working with standard nor workgroup) a new screen appear where you choose the system type but I have no option to select as the text "<i>Some of the prerequisites are missing...Please consult the Install Guide</i>"
Of course I try everything except reinstall the operating system.
Has Someone faced this problem ?? Any information will be very helpful, for sure
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi Juan,
The system on which you are trying to install Mobile Client seems to meet all the pre-requisites, however, I see there is a issue when you started installing the software. I believe when you started installing the software, you would have initially missed some pre-requisites and then you would have cancelled the installation, installed the pre-requisites and then started off with the installation again.
In this situation, there is some content already installed on the machine and the installer would read the same content again and again when you try installing again and again.
Now to resolve this issue, from the media (the path from where you are installing the software, right click on the <b>InstallationAssistant.msi</b> file and choose uninstall. This would uninstall the already installed chainer content. Now restart the machine and try to install the Mobile Client. This should resolve the issue.
(Or) try and clean up the content under sap/mobile/ root and try installing again.
    Regards,
    Ramesh.

  • Install MAC BOOK Pro from scratch

    Hi all,
I have Yosemite running on my MAC Pro. In parallel I am trying to get Yosemite running on my MAC Book Pro that was used by my son before. Unfortunately the Installation stucks at the end telling me " only one second to go" but nothing happens (to make the thing more clear, I was running "OS X Yosemite Installation.app" from stick, because the OS which was installed before, didn't work any more....
    Now my question(s):
    - where can I download an installation file for either OS X 10.6 (that was installed before)
    - or where can I download a working installation OS X Yosemite
Please keep in mind: the disk is formatted, so there's no OS any more on that disk . :-(... Trying of "cmd + R" has no result either.
    thx in advance
    Wilfred

Press the Power Button and hold it until the computer shuts down. Wait a minute then restart it. Does it work? Do you now have Yosemite installed and working? Do you have the original Snow Leopard DVDs that came with your computer? If not you will need to order replacements from Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes
    international calling numbers..
You cannot use Network Recovery on that model. Formatting the disk has removed the Recovery HD if there was one.

  • Installing Mavericks from Scratch

I have just recently changed jobs and want to wipe my 2009 MacBook Pro 17' clean and install a Solid State Drive.
I don't have any of the old OS Install DVDs and would like to install Mavericks or Yosemite from Scratch.
How do I buy/obtain a copy of this that I can install on the new Solid State Drive?

You would have to install Snow Leopard (10.6) first. You can get SL for $20 from the Apple Store here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard..
Then Mavericks (or Yosemite, which is supposed to come out in a few days) would be a free download from the App Store.

  • How to do a clean install of Lion download from App store

How do you do a clean install of Lion downloaded from the App store.  I downloaded and it installed but never was there a time of the installation it gave me an option to do a clean install.  Thanks for any help.

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • How do I re-install my Mac OSX Server from scratch

    Hi,
I have purchased two MacMini Servers with 10.6 OSX Server software pre-installed.
I have changed the organization as our company name changed and run into license issues.
I want to re-install the Mac OSX Server software and start from scratch. How do I go about this. I tried yesterday for many hours to do so and the new installs are still running into duplicate license issues and other issues. What is the best approach to do re-install? I am willing to erase the internal Hard Disk and boot (with an external DVD optical drive) if that is the best way to go. What are the steps?
I have the original CDs or DVDs and have extra, external hard disks to do a Time Machine backup, etc.
    Thanks,
    Don

If you are looking to do a nuke and pave of the system, and you have an external optical drive, then yes, that is likely the most direct method. Connect the optical drive, insert the installation DVD, and reboot the system targeting the optical disk as the boot volume (you can do this by holding down the C key or the Option key during startup).
Now, if you do not have an optical drive, you can put the installation disk into another Mac running 10.6 and use the Remote Install Mac OS X application in your Utilities folder.
    Hope this helps

  • Does re-installing OSX from scratch make XP unbootable?

I'm considering upgrading to Leopard, and in doing so would like to wipe my Tiger installation and start from scratch. Will doing so wipe some boot sector stuff so that my Bootcamp XP partition will be unbootable? I hardly use OSX and use Windows 99% of the time, so preserving my existing XP installation is far more important than upgrading OSX.
    Any advice appreciated.

    Hi minimoog,
the 'boot'-informations are saved in the 200MB-EFI-partitions on the harddisk, which usually are invisible.
If you only erase the Tiger partition and in no way alter the partitions or repartition your HD, the the Windows partition will stay intact and bootable.
Personally I would suggest making a backup of your Windows partition before the Leopard installation, just in case.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Clean install OSX+S 10.9 then migrate data from 10.6 Server?

    Howdy All,
I've had OSX Server from the first release but stopped at Snow Leopard Server waiting for the "new server" to mature a bit.  I think it is time now to move to OSX Server 10.9 but also for a clean install to clear out the crud that has collected over all these years.
I have two main partitions: one for the OS with the Mail store and Wikis and another for user home directories and other files.  Again this is going from Snow Leopard Server 10.6.last to 10.9 Mavericks and then Mavericks Server
My question is:  If I clean install Maverick and then Mavericks server on another partition will I be able to migrate data and services over manually?
Of course, I will need to setup users and directory services again from scratch (but that is part of the plan to clean out the unused stuff that has collected over the years).  I don't mind setting up fileshares, Web sites, DNS, and similar again.
However, when this is done will I be able to copy the mail store (i.e. all users email) over and will it be detected, updated if needed, and work?  Similarly, when I copy over the wikis, will they be detected, updated if needed, and work?
Further, when I setup the symbolic links for home directories again (onto the other partition), will the home directories be updated (if needed) and work?  I'm not sure what could have changed with regards to home directories but you never know.
In summary, I guess my question is about what migration only happens when you update as opposed to what happens when an older version of a resource or service is detected after an update.  Hopefully there is more of the latter than the former.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.

Out of your services (AFP/SMB, Mail, OD, SWU, and web), the one with the most potential for disaster and headache is clearly mail.  If you are using the same host device, cutting services over in pieces will not be possible.  However, here are some suggestions and potential points of concern.
AFP/SMB file services are cake.  The only thing you need to consider is the potential time to copy the data if you are moving it to new disks.  The other issue will be user's GUID values and the associated ACLs.  Let's take the following scenario based on what you've detailed.
    • You have data on /HDD/Shares/ and you are planning on moving them to the SSD.  Is the SSD drive large enough to accept this data?
    • If you had a share /HDD/Shares/Data and this contained an ACL allowing the design group to have access, the design group from the 10.6.8 OD may have a different GUID than the one you create on the 10.9.1 system.  If this is the case, you can purge all ACLs with a sudo chmod -R -N /path/to/data.  (Server.app should remove and then add but older versions resulted in merged messes so I go nuclear on the old settings)  Then you can apply your new ACLs and allow the permissions to propagate.
    • If you are leaving the data were it is, you will simply need to reset permissions.  However, note that if you are exporting and then importing users (via an OD backup or via standard record format) then you are maintaining GUID and should not need to touch any permissions.
Regarding SWU, I would suggest looking into Caching server.  If you are moving the entire environment to 10.9 and iOS 7, SWU is no longer needed.  Caching server is easy as pie, requires no client configuration, and is more economical on your internet connection and server storage requirements.
Web is pretty easy also.  But, this is dependant on what you are doing with web.  If html/php/perl then you pretty much just move your site folders and you are up and running.  If you were using MySQL, note that Apple replaced it with Postgres.  You can either perform a conversion from MySQL to Postgres or you can just install MySQL again manually.  The choice is yours.  If you are not doing database backed sites, the migration should be cake.
OD is one of those technologies that I always prefer to start clean.  In really large environments, this can be very tough due to passwords.  You can export an OD backup from 10.6 and attempt a restore in 10.9.1.  If you have a lot of MCX in 10.6.8, you may run into some trouble as Apple has deprecated MCX in 10.8 and above.  However, this ensures that you have everything, from password to GUID.  Test, test, and test some more if you go this route.  An alternate option, especially if you are embracing the move away from MCX and to Profiles, is to do a user and group export for 10.6's Workgroup Manager.  This will not provide passwords but it will provide editable text files of your account data.  You can strip out the MXC and other legacy values and then use the resulting file to import users into a clean 10.9.1 OD master.  Once again, you will not get passwords unless you add them to the import file.  You need to figure out how many accounts and how sensitive users are to password resets.
The final piece is mail.  This is the one area I have very little experience.  I've been burned by Apple's mails solutions from way back in the AppleShare IP days and now make it policy to use anything else but Apple's mail solution.  In a perfect world, moving the mail data store to the new OS and triggering Server.app should be enough.  But Apple + mail never seem to enter the realm of a perfect world.
And finally, make sure DNS is correct before you do anything.  Since you are dealing with mail, you should also shut firewall port forwards to prevent new mail from coming into the server while you work on the migration.  Nothing worse than stitching mail together after a blown migration attempt.

  • Installing OSX (SL) from a .dmg from an external HD / Flash Drive

    Hi... Please Help!!!
My copy of snow leopard is badly scratched so I made a .dmg of it onto an external HD.  Now I need to reinstall it onto my MacBookPro, and I cannot figure out how to do it.   I own a Mac Pro and am wondering if I can launch the Macbook Pro holding down the "T" key and (seeing it as a firewire device) and have the Mac Pro install the software.  Or do I need to make the external HD a bootable drive?
When I launch the .dmg it says that I need to burn a disk image to a DVD... but it is bigger than the 4.7 gigs....augh!
    Please help!
I found this on the web.... and now I am really stuck.... The MacBookPro appears to have Snow Leopard installed, but now it has a question mark flashing when I try to launch the MBP... It seems it cannot find the software I have just installed..... below is what I have done thus far from the internet....
Hook what ever Mac you need up via FW target disk mode.
    Open the dmg file
open terminal and type/cut and paste
    open "/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/"
this will open the installer package. Look for the file OSinstall.mpkg
double click it to open the installer, which will now run from the server mac and install onto whatever mac you have attached. Much faster than using a dvd and less prone to getting scratched.
Note the re are a couple of restricitions. You need to be running 10.5 to install 10.5, but 10.5 will install 10.4.
You need an intel mac to install onto an intel mac as it needs a GUID partition map
You need a PPC mac to install onto a PPC Mac
You can also install OSX onto an external FW drive plus the dmg files you need and then boot your mac from the external drive.

As you need a bootable drive to mount a .dmg in the first place, it's not the best way to go usually. If at all possible, a bootable clone is far easier to use.
To burn the .dmg to disc you will need a dual-layer DVD: See this post from another thread.
"Make a Bootable Backup Snow Leopard Install Disc
    Posted by Walter on Dec 6, 2009 • Views: 38,830 views• Comments: 8
I always keep a copy of my Mac OS X install disc with me in case of emergency when I’m traveling. I noticed recently the lack of documentation on how to make a backup disc copy (other than several of forum posts that range from useful to useless).
Here’s how to make a bootable backup copy of your Mac OS X Snow Leopard install DVD in eight easy steps. All you’ll need is a dual-layer DVD burner and a blank dual-layer DVD.
Some SuperDrives are able to write to dual-layer DVDs. If you’re not sure about your Mac, open up the System Profiler and look for “-R DL” and/or “+R DL” under “Hardware: Disc Burning — DVD-Write”.
Difficulty level: Easy Requirements: a dual-layer DVD burner and a blank dual-layer DVD
        1.    Insert your Snow Leopard DVD.
        2.    Open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app.
        3.    In the left side of the window, select the “Mac OS X Install DVD”.
        4.    Click “New Image” from the Disk Utility toolbar and select where you want to save the temporary image. For “Image Format”, choose “DVD/CD master” and for “Encryption”, choose “none”.
        5.    The image extension in the “Save As” box will be .cdr (this is what you want) — click “Save”.
        6.    Once the temporary image is created, it will show up on the left side of the Disk Utility window. Select it.
        7.    Insert a blank dual-layer DVD (I prefer Verbatim DVD+R DL discs).
        8.    Click “Burn” from the Disk Utility toolbar.
Congratulations! You now have a bootable backup copy of your Snow Leopard install disc."
If your original disc is badly damaged though, you may find the result doesn't work (the same goes for the .dmg route)
Another point - to mount the .dmg on your external drive, the drive needs to be bootable; creating a bootable drive wipes the drive first, so no .dmg. Which is why you should clone backups - it's easier to boot from the clone and reverse clone to the internal.

  • My mid-2009 MacBook Pro's hard drive is near death. I want to install a new SSD and work from scratch. Please help.

Recently, my mid-2009 MacBook Pro has been crashing when I close the screen ("it's having a problem recognizing when the screen is closed/open and deciding what to do, error overload etc.").  It wasn't an SMC issue so I took it to an Apple Store, ran some tests, and decided my hard-drive is failing.
Not wanting to spend an insane amount of money on some "official apple hard-drive," I want to install a new 256GB SSD instead.  Hoping to squeeze as much life out of this computer as possible (in January I upgraded from 4 GB RAM to 8 GB), I would like to try and start from scratch, i.e. back-up important folders, music, photos etc. and only take that to the new hard-drive.  If someone could explain all the steps I need to take to safely complete this task (or point me in the direction of a guide) I'd appreciate it.
    Potentially Important info:
         Model:                mid-2009 13'' MacBook Pro
Processor:          2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
         Memory:             4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
         Software:            OS X 10.8.4
    Some additional questions I have...
Should I be concerned with making a fully bootable back-up (not sure what that is called) as well?  If so, what program should I use to create it?
How much more life should I try and push out of this computer?  I'm an engineering student and really only use it for web-surfing, music, and
word-processing.  The batter was replaced in March, the RAM was upgraded to 8 GB in January.  When the battery was swapped, the trackpad went           nuts so that's new too.  Only other issues are a slightly loose audio jack and the left side of the screen being slightly wobbly (hinge is worn I'm told).

Well there is no "official Apple HD / SSD" in any regard, no worries there.
If as you say youre only using same for surfing and word processing, why the need for a SSD? You would not notice any speed diff. in use on either of those,....in boot times yes, but in word or surfing, not.
You can push it likely a few more years, for mere surfing and word processing,...many many years.   Up TO the point that any major fixes become unrealistic relative to getting a new(ER) machine.
Concerned with a boot clone?  yes and no.  Its an ideal immediate recovery, since you cannot boot from Time Machine, ....in case of HD crash, recovery takes seconds from boot, or 20 mins or so from removing old and installing a clone. All the prosumers and pros have at least one updated clone of their prime machines.
You can do a "fresh install" if you choose, however if your current drive is FINE, why not merely clone it and save yourself some headache?...., but that is your prerogative of course.    Ideally 2 drives, one to backup your data (you need that regardless of installing a new drive for sake of a backup/archive,...ideally 2 actually, not merely one).
You could clone internal to NEW SSD/HD , ...then offload unnecessary files to an external to free up space and clutter and run off the clone, and this would only take a couple hours......the clone itself takes approx. 40+ mins.
    CLONE Apps :
Superduper does not clone the recovery partition, but that is NOT necessary if you keep the original HD as a “backup clone”. Most don’t bother with the recovery partition in a clone, however that is your prerogative.
