Installing OSX and XP on new Mac Pro

Hi,
Just buying a new Mac Pro. I will getting it with one 750GB HD supplied direct from Apple on purchase, plus a 150GB WD Raptor, purchased seperately as a boot drive.
Question... when the hardware arrives, what is the procedure for setting up a new boot drive with Mac OSX and Windows XP (under boot camp). Do I put OSX and Windows XP both on the WD Raptor...? Any suggestions for how I should partition that drive...?
What is the physical procedure...? How do I change the boot drive from the 750GB drive on arrival to the 150GB WD Raptor that I fit....? How do I 'uninstall' Mac OSX from the Apple supplied 750GB HD...?
And any other releveant advice.
Much appreciated.

Hi Robbie_DB,
You can install OS X first on your 150GB wd raptor.
restart your mac pro with the installer disk inside the optical and press C to force to start up using installer disk.
Choose language > go to utilities > disk utilities > format the WD drive, and after you finish, go back to installer by quiting disk utility and install your mac os x and select WD drive as destination.
Sometimes it require another restart before mac os can be installed to a new formatted HD.
After you fnished install OS X, go to boot camp page, and follow instruction there.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
It is a good thing if you update your os x software and hardware firmware to the latest and repair permission after that before going to install boot camp.
And to select which HD you want to start from, open system preference from the Docks, click start up disk, and choose your WD drive, and restart.
As soon as everything run smoothly, you can start from WD drive, open application > utilities > disk utility, and erase / format the original HD supplied by apple f you really want to.
ps: back up any important data first, if any.
Good Luck.

  • Installing CS5.5 on my new mac pro - what to do?

Over the years I've purchased CS3 (boxed), CS 5 Design Premium (boxed), and CS 5.5 Design Premium (downloaded upgrade). I am ready to install 5.5 on my new mac pro. Questions:
I had once copied some CS 5.5 dmg files to my backup drive but they appear to be only pdfs about installing, etc., not applications...so,
Do I need to install my boxed CS5 first or is my 5.5 the complete set even though purchased as an 'upgrade'? (I see there are complete, separate CS5 and CS5.5 folders on my old mac)
With the above info in mind, I have to re-download CS5.5 from Adobe, right? Thanks!

Simply install CS5.5 right away and it will ask for the previous serials for verification.

  • How to  install OS X Tiger on new Mac Pro

Does anyone why you can´t install OS X Tiger on the new Mac Pro? I bought it recently and it came with Leopard of course but I really need to run Tiger because of many of my plug-ins for Protools costs a fourtune to upgrade...
Is it possible to do it? Workaround anybody..?

Is the hardware in the mac pro all that different than to the one shipped with Tiger???
I don't know all the differences, but iirc, the Graphics card is a big diff.
I have Tiger discs for a mac mini shipped just before 2008, would that work you think?
Can only guess, but no, I don't think it would, all Tiger disks for IntelMacs are Machine specific.
Sorry, can't help with the links, I've just read about attempts & the difficulties.

  • Should I install old software in my new Mac Pro, then upgrade?

I'm trying to transfer documents and apps from my PowerBook G4 to my new Mac Pro. I used Migration Assistant but it transferred only some files, no applications, no settings, even though I checked all those boxes. I've given up on MA. But here's the question: I have Office 2004, which I'd like to install so I can have Word on my Mac Pro, and then I would upgrade after installation. I've heard that pre-intel software can really slow down your intel computer. But what about starting with that software and then upgrading, so I don't have to pay for an entirely new MS Office? Same with Final Cut Studio. Any ideas about this would be appreciated!

MS Office 2008 is an upgrade, not an update. It does not replace Office 2004. It is a separate installation. It is like upgrading from Tiger to Leopard except 2008 does not replace 2004 as Leopard replaces Tiger. You purchase the entire 2008 installation like purchasing the Leopard upgrade, but can have 2004 and 2008 running on the same machine without partitioning. I have both installed on my iMac.

As far as I know, there is no discounted upgrade price from Office 2004 to 2008. I could not find it on their website anyway. I think to get Office 2008 you need to buy the Office 2008 installation disk.
I think (might be just me) Office 2004 running in Rosetta is slightly faster than the 2008 version. All the applications in 2004 launch faster. In Excel 2008, entries into cells are delayed by a fraction of a second but 2004 has instantaneous entry (perhaps MS in their infinite wisdom thinks the delay is a feature).
I am gradually changing over to 2008 only because it needs to be compatible with other computers in my office. If it weren’t for that, I would have stayed with Office 2004. Anyway, if you are going to buy Office 2008, you can install it and run it side by side with 2004 to see for yourself.
I’ve also seen posts here about MS Office 2008 having problems with the Spaces application of Leopard. If you use the Office Toolbox (formatting palette) it has bizarre behavior when using Spaces.

  • Installing Airport Extreme Card in new Mac Pro 2008?

Hello, I bought the upgrade kit for the airport wireless n up at the apple store and I am trying to install it in my new Mac Pro 2.8 octo.
I found where to install it and I did install it but Im not getting any connect at all, though it says airport is on. I installed the software on from the CD it came with also. I am using a D-Link Xtreme Router model 655.
I read on another forum post that you might have to install a wire for the antenna on top of the card. I didn't see any wire when I installed so maybe that applied to the older mac pros..
    any help would be appreciated.
These cards are compatible with my router right? I know my macbook pro n wireless connects fine.
    Thanks!

    hi kevin.
I also bought air mac card at apple store of japan.
And I installed that card at my new macpro by myself.
Apple store's genius people said to me, its installment takes 30min,so
I tried intalled airmac card and working normally in now.
But this is not customer install part.I think. They did not gave any install
    manual for this part.
So I installed this part at mac but it was not working at that time.
After googling,I found some miss at my work. That is not connecting cables at network card.
You have to connect cable at your network card for using.
Also you can find your conneting cable at your new mac.
Please find connecting cable and connect to your network card.

  • Cannot install Final Cut Studio on new Mac Pro

When I go to install Final Cut Studio on my new Mac Pro, it tells me that "Final Cut Studio Installer requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme capable video card."
I have the ATI 5870 and, just a wild guess here, I'm betting it does support Quartz Extreme.
A software update doesn't help me here because I cannot get the software installed the first place to be able to update it. What should I do?

FCS 1...Final Cut Pro 5.0? Won't work on an Intel. PowerPC only. You need at least 5.1...which wasn't a free upgrade, so updating won't work. You need FCP 5.1, FCP 6 or the most recent FCP 7. Those are the only versions that will work on the newer macs.

  • Force install 10.4.x on new Mac Pro

I just got a new Mac Pro for our design department, and we're all still on 10.4.
So I insert the 10.4 installer (retail) disc, and the the new mac is saying 10.4 cannot be installed on this machine.
Is there a way around this?
Can I just swap hard drives, or is it a firmware issue?
    Thanks

Is there a way around this?
    No.
Can I just swap hard drives, or is it a firmware issue?
Mac OS X 10.4 doesn't contain the necessary drivers. If you swap hard drives, it either won't be recognized as bootable or will cause a kernel panic at the beginning.

  • Installing windows 8.1 on new mac pro (late 2013)

    Greetings,
First time poster so forgive me if I mess up protocol.
I'm trying to install Window 8.1 on my new late 2013 Mac Pro via bootcamp.
I have followed all the steps in bootcamp and the installation fails saying "cannot update boot configuration".
I tried using a few methods I saw people on here had success with creating their own partitions with disk utility, but I still have not had success.
My system is the 6 core version, 16gb RAM, 512gb flash storage, D500 graphics cards
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem with my brand new MacPro (6-Core, D700, 1tb SSD)
I have called Apple support to report this issue, in the mean time I've done the following tests:
    Windows 7/8 tests NO Joy...
I have also tried tricking the windows 8 installer by doing the following.
1)Boot of Windows 8 installation (USB)
2)At the setup screen it will ask you to format your boot camp created drive to NTFS so that windows can be installed.
After the formatting is done and windows is ready to install i swap the Windows 8 USB stick for a Windows 7 USB stick then I click on next.
3)Windows starts copying the files just like it did on the Windows 8 installation and I get the same error.
    "Can't update boot configuration"
I guess it has nothing to do with the Windows USB Stick since I've tried installing Win 7/8 and 8.1 with the exact same error.
I have not received any news from Apple support on this issue.
Any other ideas or suggestions ?
    Thanks!

  • Installing Lion Server on brand new Mac Pro Server

So we received a Mac Pro Server with 3x1TB drives and a raid card last friday.
Unpacked it today and booted it up from the recovery partition and launched raid utitlity, as usual its 3 seperate drives (no raid).
So I deleted the second and third volumes leaving only the preinstalled lion server and recovery hd on the first volume.
Called Enterprise Support and got a few knowledge base articles about installing. One of them being about "internet install" which states if you replace the drive with recovery hd on it you can still boot your machine via internet by holding down Cmd+R.
Doing so leaves me with a Folder and a question mark, so it can't find anywhere to boot from.
Doing the same thing with any new mac delivered with normal lion on it will succeed in booting on the same network from apples internet install.
So how do I go about deleting the primary volume (with lion and recovery hd preinstalled) and creating a raid5 over these three drives?
No USB drive with Lion server delivered. It's not needed, of course not...
No DVD with Snow Leopard server delivered.

  • HDMI and MDP on new Mac Pro

I had a 27" NEC monitor (2560x1440) hooked up via MDP and a HD production monitor hooked up via HDMI and all was well. I added a second NEC to my last free Thunderbolt port and that works fine, but now the video monitor is gone. I have the two NEC monitors on the two bottom Thunderbolt ports. Does that matter? Does the HDMI port require an empty thunderbolt port, or should it work with all ports full?

Mac Pro (Late 2013): Using multiple displays
The built-in HDMI counts as one "Legacy" display. You get up to two "Legacy" displays free (as you have seen).  If you want the the next one to light up, it costs you an ACTIVE adapter.
DVI to HDMI is a free conversion because it is merely a re-wire -- the levels and timings are compatible so nothing is actually converted.
There are several ACTIVE adapters to Single-Link DVI (1920 or less wide), that can then be coupled with a DVI-to-HDMI cable. Some even offer ACTIVE Mini DisplayPort to HDMI.
Makers Accell, StarTech, and MonoPrice (currently out-of-stock) all offer these sorts of ACTIVE Adapters. Prices should be under US$30.
Screens wider than 1920 require much-more-expensive ACTIVE Dual-Link DVI adapters. Prices about US$100.

  • New Mac Pro and Old G4 Speakers

Well, I go out and buy a new mac pro(not the laptop but the desktop). I try to hook up my old G4 screen and it doesn't work. I bought a new screen becasue the guys at the store told me there was no way to adapt the screen for the new computer. Well, I go to hook up my old (old being 2 years) clear plastic round speakers and they don't fit in the hole. It is so frustrating that it seems I have to buy ALL new stuff. Does anyone know of an adapter I could use so I can hook up these speakers so I don't have to go out and spend another $100 on something I already have?

  • Will a FCP 3.0.4 upgrade from FCP 1 load onto a new Mac Pro

Will a FCP 3.0.4 upgrade from FCP 1 load onto a new Mac Pro. I have tried loading in onto a mac book with no luck. I think its because my original FCP 1 loades using OS9 and because the new Mac Pro does not have an old operating system on it I cant load my original FCP.

You should upgrade to FCP 5.1 or 6 as Jerry says.
However, if you are desperate you could try this :-
Install just your FCP 3 upgrade and also put in your FCP 1 serial number when asked.
Whenever you try to open FCP you will probably get an error message. Click the "esc" key and FCP should open.
