Installing OSX on imac 333
How do I install a retail version of Panther on imac 333? How much RAM and hardrive space is needed? Thanks.
Hannah Groce...
You need the minimum 128MB to boot Mac OS 10 more is needed depending on how you intend to use it. AppleWorks probably will work fine but surfing the net may be a challange. I would say the max - 512MB is expected to do much of anything.
HD space... The more the better, however you are limited to around 7.8GB in your bootable partition, should a larger than 8GB drive be installed.
In my opinion I would not spend the money on a limited machine. When we add things up, we can be half to three quarters of the way, to a new machine with better specs.

Can't install OSX on iMac DV 400
I have a Blueberry iMac DV 400 with 512MB/10GB and a clean install of 9.1. The hard drive was formatted journaled with Disk Utility from the 10.3 install CD.
I've tried installing 10.3, 10.3.5, and 10.2 with no luck. When trying to install 10.3, I get to the part of the install where it's reading packages and the screen goes blue with the black spinning dial gauge. When I tried to install 10.2, I got the spinning beach ball and then a black screen that said the install could not continue and I needed to restart.
The computer runs fine under 9.1. My niece had been using it for years until she upgraded to an iMac G5
Anyone have any ideas what is causing this? Thanks. I think I have plenty of hard drive space as it's a 10GB drive and with only OS9 on it, there's about 8GB free space.
However, that article "Mac OS X: Troubleshooting installation and software updates" lead me to this one:
"Troubleshooting Mac OS X installation from CD or DVD"
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106693
As suggested in this article, I will try copying all the files on the CD to the hard drive to check the optical drive. If that works OK, then I'll pull the RAM one DIMM at a time to check that. -
How to re install osx on iMac 27 late 2012
Hi
I have just purchased a late 2012 iMac 27 in with a fusion drive as the machine didn't come with a copy of the os how do you re install the os if required?
Thanks in advance
ColinThere are three ways:
A. Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
B. Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
C. Internet Recovery
A third way is when you replace a drive or must re-partition your drive. Then you will restart the computer using COMMAND-OPTION-R to invoke a net-based Recovery HD with which you can re-partition and format a new drive then do a fresh install of Mountain Lion.

Problem installing osx 10.1 on my imac g3 lime 400mhz
Hey guys i got mac os 9.1 on my imac when i try to upgrade it to 9.2.1 it fails and says it cant be installed but then when i try to install osx 10.1 that wont go no further than select a destination as the hard drive icon is grayed out any ideas? Thanks jason
Hey Jason,
Wasn't this originally a 233 tray? Which should be a 333 Lime tray? If so:
"If you have a hard drive over 8 GB in size, you must partition it, and the partition containing OS X must be completely within the first 8 GB of space or you will not be able to run OS X. (If you are creating the partition within OS X, it must be 7.45 GB or smaller as reported by Disk Utility, because sometimes a GB is billion bytes and sometimes it's 1,073,741,824 bytes.)"

Installing OSX 10.4(Tiger) over OS 9.2.2 on iMac g3
Hi,
I have an old iMac G3, it had a hdd problem and I then replaced it. Then I tried to install OSX on it using my MacBook Pro's install CDs(or dvd, I don't know) but of course they don't contain the proper drivers. So I installed 9.0 then update through until 9.2.2 and updates to the latest firmware. Then I bought a genuine copy of someone I know. Now to the problem:
When I insert the disc for OSX 10.4 and try to install it hangs at various points during installation, sometimes at 'Preparing Installation', or 'agree' on the licence agreement, or during the selection of the install location. Also, I tried to start the Disk Utility. But, then again, it hangs.
I noticed that(since you can hear it quite well, no it's not broken), you hear the disc spinning and just before it hangs it slows, and stops. like when opening the disk utility or advancing too far into the process.
Please help...
P.s. Sorry for my English, I'm DutchHi KoudeToaster, en een warm welkom op de forums!
What size is the Hard Drive now?
Not much you can do if you can't get to Disk Utility.
Did you make sure the Jumpers were set correc tly on the Drive?
Did you see if it needs a firmware update...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
Also, much RAM that was good enough for OS9 was broken, (not good enough), for/by OSX, and 10.2 broke more, same with 10.3 & 10.4 -
Hi,
I got this iMac G3 with OS 9.1 installed on the hdd. I first updated the firmware and then swapped the hdd for an empty one (with was once used on a windows system)
I try to install OSX 10.4.7 (original grey cd's for iMac) on my iMac G3
Short after reading the cd I get the following screen: grey with a black window witch says: "you need to restart your computer .Hold down the Powerbutton for several seconds or press the restart button" in several languages.
shown over this screen I see multiple lines with several panic and kernel messages.
the first line says: panic (cpu 0 caller 0x002E49D0): unable to find driver for this platform: "Powermac2,1".
I pressume that the last line mentions the problem witch causes the hanging?
Last line says:
Kernel version:
Darwin Kernel Version 8.7.3: Tue Aug 8 18:13:19 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.11.2obj~1/RELEASE_PPC
panic: We are hanging here...
I strolled off the internet using this last message to find an answer for this "panic" but no results.
Pressing d or c while starting up doesn't matter, I instantly get the screen as discribed.
I did reset-nvram and then reset-all, still the same screen shown.
And yes, I'm new to the "appleworld", I've had it with windows, so hopefully i'm only making newbie errors
Anybody here who can help me out?
PS: i made a picture of the screen, but don't know how to upload it here (might not be possible anyway)HI Eppie (gek hoor)
I upgrade a lot of G3 from OS9 to Tiger. As we speak/type I'm doing a G3 500 MHz. I created a Tiger clone on a Hard disk so I can do the upgrade also on G3s without a DVD player.
The process USED to work smooth until a few minutes ago:
-- I upgraded my clone to 10.4.11 first: the clone disk was connected to a already long ago upgraded G3: went well
-- I upgraded the OS9 G3 on the firmware level
-- Tried to boot the G3 from the clone disk>>>BANG crash
-- Fortunately I had also a 10.4.4 clone on the same disk (other partition) and the target booted very well from that partition.
Conclusion (until now)
iMac G3 with OS9 on the HDD and upgraded firmware won't leap to recent versions of tiger (I don't know where the break point is it's between 10.4.4 and 10.4.11
I'm right now transfering 10.4.4 and for the sake of the experiment I will look after the the target G3 is running 10.4.4. if I can boot from the external HDD partition with 10.4.11. If it works I'll transfer that one and having a clean 10.4.11 on a 7 old imac
Hope this helps

This computer used to boot up in about 30 seconds, now it's minutes, programs are starting to freeze, or take a long time to boot. I suspect it's bits and fragments from programs that I have used and deleted over the years, but are still floating around inside my iMac. I really don't want to re-format and re-install OSX but the lack of performance is finally starting to irritate me. (Haveing switched from windows in 2009, I can tell you, I used to reformat and re-install windows about every 3 months because I liked that fresh fast boot up feel.) Any advice is welcome. Here's a printout from a program that lists everything using my system.
Thanks.

Help with installing OSX Lion on iMac with broken display
Hi,
Having some trouble installing OSX Lion on my 5 year old iMac which has a broken display.
The display has been dead for a couple of years now and I've been using an external monitor without any problems. Today I decided to upgrade to Lion - I downloaded the installer from the App Store and started the install which rebooted the machine. After reboot I'm presented with a grey 'thatched' background image on the external display and nothing else, no menu bar, installation menu etc.
I presume the internal display is showing the menu I need but I can't see it as that screen is broken. Is there a way to turn on mirroring during the install process so I can use my external display? I've tried various shortcuts held down during startup - OPTION-F14, CMD-F1, CMD-F2 - but none have worked.
If this isn't possible, is there a way to abort the Lion install process and go back to using my Snow Leopard install? Whenever I boot the machine I am taken to the OS X Lion installer and don't know how to get back to my Snow Leopard install. I tried holding down OPTION key on startup to choose the list of available OS installs, but again, the internal display is being used so I can't see what to do.
Thanks in advance for any help.Genius idea, thank you. Was able to step through the install procedure using voiceover and the screenshots on this page http://www.macstories.net/mac/os-x-lion-installation-guide-boot-discs-and-qa/
Definitely a first for me, installing an OS with voice only -
IMac DV SE refuses to install OSX
hello all --
i have an old G3 iMac with a DVD drive, 60 GB HD and 512MB ram running at 500Mhz. I have been trying to install OSX (10.3 or 10.4) on it without success. The machine either locks up during the install process or during the install set up screens. I can wipe the HD starting up from the Install disc and then install OS 9.2 without any trouble.
Here is some more info:
- firmware has been updated to 4.1.9 or whatever the most recent version is
- OS X install discs are purchased retail versions
- iMac passes all hardware tests, memory is OK, HD is fine
- i have wiped the HD and written zeroes to it several times
- install discs work on other machines
The only thing i have not yet done is replaced the internal battery, but i don't know why that would cause an OSX install to fail but not an OS 9.
Any help would be much appreciated. This is driving me crazy.the RAM is factory installed
It came from Apple with 512 MB? or from a retailer?
...what would your next step be?
Disconnect/remove all 3rd party devices. Replace RAM with RAM known to be agreeable with OS X. -
I had a 'dead' iMac repaired and it needed a new HDD and graphics card, the repairer installed OSX 10.6.8 and i now need to install other software but I am being asked for 'User' password so I may do this, I have no idea what this will be. can anybody help please?

Installing OSX on 24" iMac with broken Display
Hi,
I have a 24" iMac but the Screen is broken. It still worked with a external Display connected via MiniDVI but now i would like to install OSX 10.6. The problem is that I can't get the Installation to show on the external Display and I can't see what I'm (supposed to be) doing on the iMac's screen. With the DVD inserted it boots up like this (I can't even get the DVD out now):
Is there a working Shortcut (I tried cmd+F7 and cmd+F1) or other way to install without the main screen or is there at least a way to retrieve the DVD?If you had another Mac you could do a remote install to the iMac 24".

Elements 13 seemed to install ok on iMac OSX 10.9.5. Restarted iMac. Tried to open Elements. Opened but start-up screen did not open. Only gave 1st menu "Photoshop Elements" no other drop downs appeared
If you go into the applications folder, can you open Adobe Elements 13 Organizer, or the editor directly? The editor is well-hidden. It's inside the support files folder in the Adobe Photoshop Elements 13 folder:

I installed OSX 10.6.8 on iMac and now I have two icons for time machine in my dock. When I try to access either one the wheel goes round and round. I seem to have lost all back ups that were on Time Capsule. Not sure how to check or what to do. Thanks.
See what happens if you select the TM icon in your menubar, and select Enter Time Machine there.
If that doesn't help, try the things in #E4 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting -
Unable to re install osx after erasing HD on iMac
Hi
I have a 2007 iMac 4,1 Intel core duo 2ghz that refused to boot after crashing.
After much searching of support articles i have tried all suggestions.
It would not accept the original [tiger] install discs[superdrive spits them out] so i used my macbookpro to erase the hd and then install disc 1 via target mode.
The iMac now gets as far as select destination, in the installer, but the hard drive does not appear [waited more than 1 hour].
I have the leopard upgrade dvd also.
I ran disk utility verify and its says vol 1 iMac appears ok
1 HFS volume checked
volume passed verification
but verify disk permissions says first aid failed- no valid packages
Does anyone have any solutions that will solve this, as i am no expert on these matters and really need step by step help.
Many thanks in advance
PI am confused!
You said.
Please confirm:
You want to erase the drive on the iMac after booting from the Macbook Pro, with the iMac in TDM. Is that correct?
YES I did that so as to install osx install disk 1.
When you boot in TDM and run DU off the MBP hard drive, does it recognize the iMac hard drive?
YES i erased the iMac HD and installed osx disk 1.
Note that you cannot erase / reformat the drive from which the computer is booted.
BUT u said this previously!
Try this:
Repeat this first part, then reformat the drive on the iMac, using Disk Utility on the installer disk. Select Mac OS extended, GUID partition.
Then run the installer in the usual way.

I have a late 2009 iMac. I installed OSX 10.8.4 and want to go back to Snow Leopard. I have a 3TB external HD. Are there any issues I need to know about or tips I need to know before doing this? Thanks.
Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART
info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files.
