Installing Panther On A Recent Computer

I know this is an odd question but I am wondering if it is possible to install Panther on a partition separate from my Leopard partition or even into Fusion on the same partition? My computer is an early 2008 MBP.
I have one piece of graphics software that does not work on 10.4, 5, or 6. I want to use it from time to time and I have the discs with 10.3 from my eMac which died a couple of years ago. I also have the install disc for 10.2 and for 10.1 (from an old iBook) any of which would be compatible with this software.
The software is the old Kai Power Tools plug ins for Photoshop and Painter.
If the earlier OS X is a problem can anyone suggest modern software equivalents of KPT ink dropper etc

Tony:
Are the PATA HDD easy to get?
Not at all. The iBook G3 has a limitation with regards to the size (capacity) of the HDD because the BootROM will only see 128 GB, but that is a lot more than 10 GB or whatever the original was. Here are a few I think would do fine for you:
Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST9120822A 120GB Hard Drive
Fujitsu MHV2120AT 100GB Hard Drive
There are others, of course, but I couldn't get the long links to work. I recommend 100 or 120 GB. If you choose to go for something smaller here are a couple:
Seagate Momentus 5400.2 80GB Hard drive
Hitachi HTS541060G9AT00 60GB Hard Drive
Look over these and post back with questions.
You will find step by step directions at iFixit. Here are few tips you may find helpful:
• Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
• Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx screw driver is critical. For a spudge I use the handle of an old toothbrush (choose one made of hard plastic), cut off the brush and bevelled the handle end like a flat blade screw driver). For some spudge jobs a credit card will do the trick.
• Picking up on one user’s suggestion, I clicked on the pages of each step which involved removing screws to enlarge, then printed out the pages. I poked holes in the paper where the screws were removed, poked the screws in the holes and stacked the pages in order in which there were removed. Reassembling was a lot easier. No cups to tip over and spill. No guessing. Each screw was exactly in the right place. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. I previously used small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nested them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
• Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
• Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
• Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.

It is possible that you downloaded the Creative Cloud trial of Lightroom. The perpetual license key will not work. Uninstall the version on the second computer, this will not interfere with your catalog, preferences and personal files.
Download the appropriate version from the link below and install, your license key will be accepted and everything will be fine.

Hello everyone, I recently installed Windows XP in my computer but now it does not start my Ipod classic information even I just have installed Itunes. What should I do if I do not have my CD to get it from there?

Try using Firefox. Flash usually works on Firefox when it won't on Safari. I noticed that the Safari does not show the same version as Firefox does. Iwonder if that could be the problem. Safari on the left shows 10.1, Firefox show 10.3

  • Installed Panther on Older iMac and Mail Doesn't Work Correctly

I installed panther on my son's iMac recently. I created a subaccount for him from my verizon dsl account. I made sure all the info was the same on my mail preferences as in his but we can't send or received anything. I keep getting a message to put in the password for the account and I do and it doesn't let me in, just the same message comes up again. I put his account into my mac's Mail program and it works fine, but on his it doesn't. All the info is the same - I've checked and checked his password and it doesn't work. I even put my account info onto his computer and I have the same password problems. Anybody?

    thank you now everything works

  • Display problems when installing Panther

I purchased a G3 blue/white from work with 9.2.2 and the panther install disks (3 of them). The monitor was fine in 9.2.2. Upon inserting the panther disks, the display went grayscale and was next to unreadable. However, the install continued through disks one and two (never asked for 3?). Rebooting does not help, but I can tell it is running os x. Did the display drivers crash? I do not have the original 9.2.2 disks. Any advice?
I can tell you it has 192 ram and is a 300 mhz. I can't recall the size of the hard drive. However, when I opened the drive icon after installing panther, it listed about 40 mg as available.

For your machine to be upgraded from 9.2.2 to OS X, the firmware needs to be upgraded first. If you have not upgraded the firmware, I suggest that you go to Apple's firmware site and follow the instructions there to download and install the firmware.
I recently went through the process of updating the firmware on a iMac G3 and found the process to be a little tricky. This is what I learned:
After downloading the software, there was a folder called iMac Firmware Update on my desktop. That had 3 files in it, including an "About iMac Firmware Update". It is crucial to read that and to follow the directions. Rougly, you have to:
    - double click the iMac Firmware Updater
    - shut down the computer when prompted
-hold in the programmer's button (location shown in the instructions) with the tip of a pen and restart while holding the button
    - keep holding the button until a long tone is heard
    - after that, the update runs by itself and the computer will reboot. After it rebooted, I received a message that the update had been completed successfully.
The details might vary slightly for your machine, but I expect the general method is the same.
    I hope this helps.

  • Install CD's and/or re-installing 'Panther' without them?

    Hi,
I can't find my Install CD's and my iBook doesn't start up anymore. I get the 'loading-screen', but after that the screen just stays blue. Now I've tried everything they advise you to do in Support, nothing works though. So of course the next step would be to use my Install CD's, which I can't find anymore. I've recently purchased a SmartDisk and I've been able to save the files I don't want to loose through Target Disk Mode and a friend's iBook. He said I could borrow his Install CD's, but he's got a 14" and I think it's 'younger' than mine. This would mean it wouldn't work, right? Besides, it might even be illegal, or not? What I was wondering is whether I can still use Disk Utility via those CD's or will that fail as well?
And if so, can I make a CD with my iBook that enables me to install Panther without my original Install CD's? And if so (these are a lot of 'ifs', I know), how can I save, for instance, the iLife that was on those original CD's, can I just copy the application to my external hard drive and then put them back afterwards?
I've given Apple a call to ask how much it would cost to buy a new Install CD and it was €95 (about $115)! So if anyone can help, I'd be very much obliged!
    Thanks!
    Kevin
    iBook 12 inch   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

If your friend's iBook is a "Late 2005" and yours is an "Early 2004", then his iBook would have come with Mac OS X 10.4. This copy of 10.4 will not install on any other kind of computer. However, you could buy a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.4. This would not get you the AppleWorks or iLife that originally came with your iBook, however. You could also buy a retail copy of iLife, but with the two purchases together, it would be cheaper to pay Apple for copies of your correct disks...
Although I'm not sure how I can find the processor speed without my iBook working.
If you open the keyboard, there will be a sticker inside that has some information about your iBook. It should say something like "1.2GHz G4/512/40/AP/BT". That would be a 1.2GHz G4 with 512MB of RAM (built-in), a 40GB hard drive, an AirPort card, and Bluetooth.

  • Problems installing Panther on G3 ibook

I recently bought panther off ebay to install on my 3 year old ibook G3 [700mhz, 640 RAM, 30g HD]. I am currently running 10.2.8 without problems.
During the installation process I got the message 'An error has occured during installation' 'Please try to reinstall' I've tried to install, in various ways, 5-7 times at this point with no luck.
I've tried upgrading, I've tried erasing the HD and installing, I've tried only installing/upgrading the necessary componets to run the system, all of which have ended in the same error message. The error occurs during the 'Preparing Base System Part 2' part of the installation process [somewhere around 4 minutes remaining].
I thought it was the discs I purchased, but I was able to install Panther on my external and boot the computer from there, so it seems the discs are good.
In my latest attempt I erased my HD and reinstalled 10.2 from my original disks, upgraded to the most current versions of everything through Software Update and tried the upgrade ... still getting the same error ...
Any suggestions of what might help?

    ibook G3   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Hi Again SloMocean!
Unfortunately, those CDs will not work on your iBook.
They are CDs that were designated to be shipped with a specific iBook model.
Although you have an iBook, it may not be exactly the same as the model that those CDs were intended for.
More info here Tip: Mac OS X Install CDs/Use On Multiple Macs.
You need a Full Retail Version of the Panther Install CDs, which can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, etc.
They are no longer available directly from the "Apple Store", as "Tiger 10.4.x" is the most up to date OS.
You may find one on this eBay Search Results Page, but CAVEAT EMPTOR, as you have discovered!
If you do an expanded search on eBay, or Amazon, you will probably find more.
Once again, make sure the CDs that you purchase, look like THESE.
Once 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update.
Shop Carefully, Read All Documentation, and Good Luck!

  • Re-installing Panther

I was recently given a stripped-down G3 iBook. I tried to look at System Profiler to see what its capabilities were, only to discover that the previous owners had deleted System Profiler. Everything is gone from the apps folder - even System Preferences and Disk Utility!
Needless to say, this thing will be hard to use without reinstalling some of that stuff, but I have no disk to work with. Is there any way I can create or get hold of a Panther install disk? Failing that, is there a way to reinstall system software without reinstalling the OS?
All I know about the laptop: G3 iBook, 10 GB hard drive, 500mHz processor w/ 320mb ram, running OSX 10.3.9

If you can use that computer's System Profiler to see what the
hardware and other information says about the machine, it may
be helpful to know in advance if the computer's optical drive is
more than the base-level standard CD read-only drive. Of course
the missing link is the System Profiler; but the serial number lookup
could tell you the basic as-shipped hardware. Then use Mactracker.
Some of the earliest White iBook G3 models were limited in that
they shipped with a base model plus upper models better equipped.
You could probably identify your computer through a 'serial number
look-up' web site, and also through use of the databases of Every
Mac.com and the free download of mactracker: http://mactracker.ca
If you can find the serial number, and run that through a site such as:
    http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html then that info
can narrow the field by telling you the model build date of manufacture
so giving you further info to use MacTracker and others, to their fullest.
There is a fair possibility that the iBook's internal hard disk drive would
need to be upgraded to a larger capacity and perhaps one with a larger
cache or buffer; maybe even a slightly faster spin-rate (an ATA/PATA HD.)
The question of the optical drive, being more (or less) than a Combo or
SuperDrive, brings into focus the further need to get OS X discs for the
existing optical drive version; should it be the base-model CD-ROM, & not
the more desirable Combo (CD read/write + DVD read) or higher grade.
Panther shipped on CD media, Tiger shipped on DVD media (with very
limited numbers of specially available - in their day - sets of Tiger on CD)
so this optical drive issue is second to the hard disk drive, in supporting
an OS X version. Plus, to get and install the most RAM the computer can
support is not just recommended, it's a matter of having the thing work OK.
A small processor vintage may hobble the experience, along with the lack
of system bus speeds, small/slow hard drive spin rate, lack of RAM, and
other details of an aged design; so you may find a later model better suited.
The bootable OS X install disc set best suited for the hardware status of
the computer you have, would be needed to rectify the situation where
    someone did not include any discs to support the OS X they put into there;
and that is a no-no. And to be able to erase (secure erase) everything on
the hard drive and start over. The booted Disk Utility on the Installer can
perform tasks such as one-pass over-writing of the hard drive; this is the
least secure level of zeroing the hard drive (writes zeros over content.)
Ideally, you'd need at least a 40GB ATA HDD for Tiger 10.4.x; and that
would be about the oldest capable system you may find browsers and
some support for; a limited situation due to the non-upgradable parts in
the iBook series (like other portables) that can't be replaced.
The fine OEM 10GB hard disk drive was fantastic with OS 9.2.2, in it's day.
It could even do fairly OK with Panther 10.3.9 a few years ago; but slow.
    My iBook G3 500MHz (may 2001) with 10GB HDD, CD-ROM, 12" LCD,
56k dialup modem, original AirPort card, 576MB RAM, & OS9.2.2~X10.3.9
did fairly well. After some repairs were made, I sold it & bought a mid-2005
iBook G4 whilst muddling through a troublesome iMac G4 AppleCare repair.
If you can more accurately determine the exact machine-build you have there,
finding the most suitable path to upgrade the unit to make it work, and also to
make it more resalable should you decide to get something newer, at least
you could make it better than you found it, and include OS install discs for the
next potential owner to start out with. Always get an OS install disc set with a
computer, and even an old Mac should have the original discs plus anything
newer it has running on the machine at the time of sale. (Per license, etc.)
    Anyway, however that works out...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Crash when attempting to install panther and jaguar

    Hello,
Few days ago I suffered a nasty crash (kernel panic I think) from using Windows Media Player 9 and a partially downloaded movie. After that the computer was unable to restart. Blue screen after showing the starting up window and nothing more. (I asked about that in this thread "what are my chances of full/partial recovery?" http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1008280&tstart=0 ).
Managed to get all my personal files off the crashed Powerbook via another machine using firewire disk target mode. Having managed to successfully do that I thought it was going to be plain sailing from then on. I used Disk Utility to reformat the drive including overwriting with zeros, and the Powerbook drive appeared on the other machine's desktop completely empty and looking fine.
Having disconnected it from the other machine, using Panther install CD 1 to install Panther I got a kernel panic, the message in multiple languages including Japanese saying restart computer, soon after clicking the Install button.
I tried starting from the Jaguar install disk 1, choosing Disk Utilities to reformat the drive again (without zeroing it this time) and tried to install Jaguar instead. Soon after clicking Install the screen went entirely black with a bit of white text in the top left: The installer has quit due to an unexpected error (exit code 0). Please restart your computer.
What's going on? The computer was working fine before the Windows Media Player crash (which occured when viewing movie in full screen mode). I've wiped and reformated the disk and now can't install Panther or Jaguar. What could the problem be? Firmware? I'm guessing without knowing anything. I'm v. surprised the problem is continuing after reformatting the drive. That indicates that the crash effected something other than the contents of the drive?! which I thought was impossible.
Any suggestions would be much apprecaited.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    Thanks for the replies/info.
Yes the Panther and Jaguar install disks are retail versions, not specific machine versions. And the Jaguar ones worked for the Powerbook before.
The Powerbook I have is the Firewire 500mhz one, Pismo I think it's called. The hard drive is a 60GB one. I didn't have to partition it before.
Reviewing all the above, it would appear that the problem is me not being able to use an internal, built in CD/DVD drive to install from this time? The only other thing it could be I think is the crash I recently had has had some bad effect -- but that's unlikely right? So, I need to get a new DVD drive? Or is there any other way to get the OS onto the Powerbook without getting another internal DVD/CD drive? Is there anyway to install onto the PB from another machine maybe?
Does that sound right?: not being able to use internal DVD/CD drive is the source of my current problem?
    Thanks.

  • Just installed Panther, Safari crashs constantly... ideas? (inc. crash log)

Hey guys, so while my regular computer is being worked on, I'm using this old PowerMac G4 (400 Ghz, I know, it's old). I actually just had to Archive & (Re)install Panther--a friend from the Geek Squad had worked on/looked at it recently regarding removing an older drive that had failed, when I got it back for whatever reason it had reverted to OS9 so I had to upgrade, but THAT'S another story--and first tried using Safari, but it's been crashing constantly... like, 3 times within 10 minutes. I don't even have to be using it, and it'll just crash behind whatever program--Finder, etc.--I'm running; I'm currently using Firefox even to browse online and post this.
Any ideas?? Normally I NEVER have any problems with Safari crashing--in fact, I've had more trouble with Firefox doing so--so I don't know why this is. The ONLY thing I can think is that I wasn't able to fully install the 2nd disc of Panther--it said there were "errors" while I was doing so--so maybe I can/should try again. But for the time being, here's one of the crash logs I've been getting, in case it would help you guys to troubleshoot....

Yeah, it's the 2nd disc... I put it in when it was asked for, it ran its course but it said "There Were Errors" afterwards... which is another thing I REALLY can't figure out, because I've used these discs to install Panther a few times without any problems or warnings (I had a boot drive crash about a year ago and had to use them to reinstall everything; this Archive & Install's like the 3rd time, though I STILL can't figure out why/what this Geek Squad guy must've done to cause my OS to downgrade like that...).
Firefox SEEMS to be working fine (knock wood), but I'd really like to figure this out, get Safari working too.
So what are you guessing? Anything I need to try changing in the settings?? Or adjusting with Flash?? I WOULD delete it and use Firefox to download it/try reinstalling it, but I'm really not sure if that's going to work...

  • Can't install Panther- or kinda did?

I hope someone can help- I've spent days futzing with my computer and combing the discussions and support articles and am still stumped.
I recently received a used white iBook G3 from a friend with OS 9.1 on it. I want to upgrade it to Panther. I read in these forums that I needed to upgrade the startup disk to 9.2 in order to be able to start up from the Panther cds so I did that. I still could not get the computer to start up from the cd in order to install OS 10.3. I tried choosing in startup, pressing c as i restarted, pressing option as I restarted, no luck. Then I tried as I read somewhere here, pressing X as I restarted- and joyful day, I got the music and the OS X welcome. I got through the next couple pages asking me to set up internet, mail and to register (which I couldn't complete bc I wasn't hooked up to the internet) and then I was at an OS X desktop without actually having installed, didn't get to customize, choose archive and install or anything. Turns out I'm now in 10.0.3 and don't seem to be able to install Panther or install anything from the 2nd or 3rd cd! Was anything installed? I don't have iPhoto or many other things. Did a half install take place? Restarting from cd 1 does nothing. And I can't install anything off of cd 2 or 3. Please help!
What actually happened? And how can I complete this attempted installation?

Your post is quite confusing as you say you want to install Panther but somehow installed 10.0.3. ("Turns out I'm now in 10.0.3 and don't seem to be able to install Panther or install anything from the 2nd or 3rd cd!") First, unless you installed many of the extras all of Panther will install from one or two CDs.
Second, you don't need OS 9 at all. If you plan to run OS 9 applications and use Classic while running OS X, then you need to install OS 9.1 or higher, but OS 9 is not required in any way for OS X.
Because you've provided no useful information on the actual model and configuration of your Mac, it's pretty difficult to go much further. Installing Panther requires a minimum of 128 MBs of installed RAM and at least an 8 GB hard drive. For any practical use you really need about 512 MBs of installed RAM and a 20 GB hard drive.
I suggest you might try all over and do the following:
Insert the Panther Installer Disc One into the optical drive and restart the computer. Immediately after you hear the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Don't release the key until you see a spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu. After DU loads select the hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the left side list, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window, set the number of partitions to one (1) and the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the respective drop down menus. Click on the Partition button. After partitioning has completed quit DU and return to the installer.
Proceed with the installation until you reach the point where you select a destination drive. Click on the drive then click on the Options button. Be sure to select the Erase and Install option then click on OK. Continue with the installation. In the next dialog you should see a Customize button. Click on it to customize your installation. Continue and finish the installation. If files are needed from a second disc you will be prompted after the computer restarts.

  • I keep getting Kernel Panic when I try to install Panther

    Hello!
I bought a used iMac from eBay. It's a 500mhz Indigo model with CDRW. It has Jaguar and OS9 installed on it and I want to install Panther. When I try to do the install the computer reboots and I get the Kernel Panic. I just want to wipe out whatever is there and start fresh with Panther but the Kernel keeps getting Panicky. Can anyone help?
BTW I'm not installing Tiger because I don't have it yet.
    Thanks!

    Hi Again KeepItSimple!
As I asked in your Other Topic, does the Full Retail Version of Panther, have CDs that look like THESE?
It isn't necessary to start a new topic for the same issue. It's preferable to keep all the information in the same thread. Then users attempting to assist you have all the pertinent data in one place.

  • Stuck: can't re-install Panther, only OS 10.0.3

OK, I've posted this also on OS 10.3 and earlier.
    Here's a short story:
Panther ran beautifully fore quite a while, then started to have kernel panics due to faulty RAM.
I just replaced the 2 128 Mb sticks that were faulty with a brand new 512 from Crucial.
But still could'nt start-up in Panther. Got freezes during installation always on the first CD. Also got panics (cpu 0) or "can't find PowerMac drive".
Ran DiskWarrior and there was a whole bunch of stuff wrong and repaired.
    Still same symptoms.
Everything was backed-up and I zeroe'd the HD
Then re-installed OS 9.1, updated with OS 9.2.1 with CD. All was well, then I could'nt install Panther. Same symptoms.
I got fed-up, changed the HD, brand new Western Digital 80 GB.
Started over again and same results: OS9 OK, no-go on Panther...
I can install OS 10.0.3 that came with the beast but can't upgrade to 10.1 with the CD that also came with the iMAc. Say's that the installer unexpectadely quit (error 0)...
Panther disks are retail, could they be faulty ???
    Any ideas anyone
    Thanks

    Hi Ron,
This is what I have on Open Firmware:
    Apple Powermac4, 1 4.1.9f1 BootROM built on 09/14/01 at 13:18:04
Yesterday and last night I ran the Hardware Test in loop mode and got twice an error concerning the modem. It is not and was not in use recently and normally I use the Ethernet connection for WWW.
    The error code was: modm/2/8
First time on loop 13, second time on loop 45
On restart, I had the pleasure of having the question mark, so I tried booting with Panther CDs and only got panics.
On the first time there was only the dark window asking to restart. On the second try, I got the usual: (CPU 0) Unable to find driver... and lower: no debugger configured...
So I booted with the OS 9 CD, repaired the disk and got:
    Invalid catalog record type,4,1499
    SOS can not repair disk
I repaired a second and third time and both were then OK.
Because I have nothing of consequence on the HD and a bit out of frustation, I reformatted (extended) and reinstalled OS 9 and all went OK.
This is were I'm at now, had to leave for work.
This modem error, could it be the culprit?
    Is it repairable?
I'm still not convinced about the Panther CDs, I'll try to find another set.
I'll post this also on my other thread in OS X 10.3 and earlier to keep Gulliver informed.
    Ciao
