Installing Panther on G3

I have a G3 blue and white that I've been trying for days to reinstall system software. I'm giving it away and wanted to wipe out all my stuff and start fresh. Keep in mind I did have Panther on it before. Here are my steps....
I installed the original Power Mac G3 system software 8.5.1
Installed OS 9 (from my original purchase of 10.0)
Installed upgrades to 9.2.2
Then I tried to install OS X 10.0 (the blue X on the CD)...wouldn't work.
Tried to update firmware....says it's not needed.
Tried to jump to install Panther 10.3...won't work.
I get this error (Startup disk unable to install CD as startup disk(-2).
Ran Disk Warrior, and tried again and got the same message.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I wanted to install the latest OSX that I can, and still have access to classic. What can I do? Now I can't even get any OSX to install. OS 9.2.2 does work ok. Any advice??

You cannot use OS 8.x.x with OS X. If you use both you must use OS 9.1 or higher.
Yes, you can erase and start over. Here's basically what to do:
1a (If this is the startup drive.) Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu if using Tiger.) Be sure to use the installer disk for the version of OS X you intend to install.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Once the formatting is complete quit Disk Utility and return to the installer. Then proceed to complete the OS X installation. Once you have OS X installed and working properly you can reinstall OS 9.

  • I keep getting Kernel Panic when I try to install Panther

    Hello!
I bought a used iMac from eBay. It's a 500mhz Indigo model with CDRW. It has Jaguar and OS9 installed on it and I want to install Panther. When I try to do the install the computer reboots and I get the Kernel Panic. I just want to wipe out whatever is there and start fresh with Panther but the Kernel keeps getting Panicky. Can anyone help?
BTW I'm not installing Tiger because I don't have it yet.
    Thanks!

    Hi Again KeepItSimple!
As I asked in your Other Topic, does the Full Retail Version of Panther, have CDs that look like THESE?
It isn't necessary to start a new topic for the same issue. It's preferable to keep all the information in the same thread. Then users attempting to assist you have all the pertinent data in one place.

  • IMac DV/400 will not read CD's since I installed Panther

    Hi,
A customer's iMac DV/400 with 384 MB RAM was running OS 9.2.2. We decided to upgrade his OS to 10.3 (firmware was already up to date 4.19) After the first CD finished and it restarted and asked for disk 2, it would no longer read ANY CD's. In fact I had to cancel the rest of the install, because it wouldn't even recognize disk 2. What can be done to fix this? nothing has changed except the OS. I made the Mac boot from the old 9.2.2 again and the CD's read fine.
    HELP!

If the DV ROM works with OS 9.2.2 then there is nothing wrong with it. Try installing Panther again. What is the size of the hard drive? Does it have enough free space?

  • Can't install panther 10.3 on iMac G3

first of all, sorry for my bad english, and lack of capitals : i am using an old version of internet explorer version 5 i guess, which does not recognise the french characters, accents, capitals and the rest...
now my main problem : i am trying to install panther ( mac os10.3 ) on my imac 406 g3, running on mac os 9.2.2 with upgraded firmware.
when trying to run the first installation disk, the system replies :
    an error occured
startup disk was unable to select the install cd as the startup disk. ( -2)
i am also unable to start from the disk by pressing the c key, and also unable to select the disk in the through the " demarrage " in " tableau de bord " menu

From what I gather in your reply, I believe you're saying it is a 4 GB hard drive. Yes, OS X will run on your iMac, but you need a larger hard drive just to do that. OS X takes up gigabytes of space, requires even more gigabytes just to be able to run properly, and OS X applications take up much more disk space than anything before them.
Your iMac also shipped with 128 MB of RAM, but you'll need at least 512 MB to make it run with any sort of speed. If you can, get two 512 MB RAM modules for your system and have your Apple Authorized Service Provider install one (or both) of them for you. The module it came with is soldered in place, so you can't access it easily to replace it. You can put up to 1 GB of RAM in your machine (two 512 MB PC66 144 pin SO-DIMM modules).
At the same time, get yourself a good 60 to 80 GB hard drive (Seagate, IBM, Maxtor are all good brands, and make sure it has at least a 3 year warranty) and have your service provider install that for you at the same time as the RAM.

  • Installed Panther on Older iMac and Mail Doesn't Work Correctly

I installed panther on my son's iMac recently. I created a subaccount for him from my verizon dsl account. I made sure all the info was the same on my mail preferences as in his but we can't send or received anything. I keep getting a message to put in the password for the account and I do and it doesn't let me in, just the same message comes up again. I put his account into my mac's Mail program and it works fine, but on his it doesn't. All the info is the same - I've checked and checked his password and it doesn't work. I even put my account info onto his computer and I have the same password problems. Anybody?

    thank you now everything works

  • Display problems when installing Panther

I purchased a G3 blue/white from work with 9.2.2 and the panther install disks (3 of them). The monitor was fine in 9.2.2. Upon inserting the panther disks, the display went grayscale and was next to unreadable. However, the install continued through disks one and two (never asked for 3?). Rebooting does not help, but I can tell it is running os x. Did the display drivers crash? I do not have the original 9.2.2 disks. Any advice?
I can tell you it has 192 ram and is a 300 mhz. I can't recall the size of the hard drive. However, when I opened the drive icon after installing panther, it listed about 40 mg as available.

For your machine to be upgraded from 9.2.2 to OS X, the firmware needs to be upgraded first. If you have not upgraded the firmware, I suggest that you go to Apple's firmware site and follow the instructions there to download and install the firmware.
I recently went through the process of updating the firmware on a iMac G3 and found the process to be a little tricky. This is what I learned:
After downloading the software, there was a folder called iMac Firmware Update on my desktop. That had 3 files in it, including an "About iMac Firmware Update". It is crucial to read that and to follow the directions. Rougly, you have to:
    - double click the iMac Firmware Updater
    - shut down the computer when prompted
-hold in the programmer's button (location shown in the instructions) with the tip of a pen and restart while holding the button
    - keep holding the button until a long tone is heard
    - after that, the update runs by itself and the computer will reboot. After it rebooted, I received a message that the update had been completed successfully.
The details might vary slightly for your machine, but I expect the general method is the same.
    I hope this helps.

  • Stuck: can't re-install Panther, only OS 10.0.3

OK, I've posted this also on OS 10.3 and earlier.
    Here's a short story:
Panther ran beautifully fore quite a while, then started to have kernel panics due to faulty RAM.
I just replaced the 2 128 Mb sticks that were faulty with a brand new 512 from Crucial.
But still could'nt start-up in Panther. Got freezes during installation always on the first CD. Also got panics (cpu 0) or "can't find PowerMac drive".
Ran DiskWarrior and there was a whole bunch of stuff wrong and repaired.
    Still same symptoms.
Everything was backed-up and I zeroe'd the HD
Then re-installed OS 9.1, updated with OS 9.2.1 with CD. All was well, then I could'nt install Panther. Same symptoms.
I got fed-up, changed the HD, brand new Western Digital 80 GB.
Started over again and same results: OS9 OK, no-go on Panther...
I can install OS 10.0.3 that came with the beast but can't upgrade to 10.1 with the CD that also came with the iMAc. Say's that the installer unexpectadely quit (error 0)...
Panther disks are retail, could they be faulty ???
    Any ideas anyone
    Thanks

    Hi Ron,
This is what I have on Open Firmware:
    Apple Powermac4, 1 4.1.9f1 BootROM built on 09/14/01 at 13:18:04
Yesterday and last night I ran the Hardware Test in loop mode and got twice an error concerning the modem. It is not and was not in use recently and normally I use the Ethernet connection for WWW.
    The error code was: modm/2/8
First time on loop 13, second time on loop 45
On restart, I had the pleasure of having the question mark, so I tried booting with Panther CDs and only got panics.
On the first time there was only the dark window asking to restart. On the second try, I got the usual: (CPU 0) Unable to find driver... and lower: no debugger configured...
So I booted with the OS 9 CD, repaired the disk and got:
    Invalid catalog record type,4,1499
    SOS can not repair disk
I repaired a second and third time and both were then OK.
Because I have nothing of consequence on the HD and a bit out of frustation, I reformatted (extended) and reinstalled OS 9 and all went OK.
This is were I'm at now, had to leave for work.
This modem error, could it be the culprit?
    Is it repairable?
I'm still not convinced about the Panther CDs, I'll try to find another set.
I'll post this also on my other thread in OS X 10.3 and earlier to keep Gulliver informed.
    Ciao

  • Install CD's and/or re-installing 'Panther' without them?

    Hi,
I can't find my Install CD's and my iBook doesn't start up anymore. I get the 'loading-screen', but after that the screen just stays blue. Now I've tried everything they advise you to do in Support, nothing works though. So of course the next step would be to use my Install CD's, which I can't find anymore. I've recently purchased a SmartDisk and I've been able to save the files I don't want to loose through Target Disk Mode and a friend's iBook. He said I could borrow his Install CD's, but he's got a 14" and I think it's 'younger' than mine. This would mean it wouldn't work, right? Besides, it might even be illegal, or not? What I was wondering is whether I can still use Disk Utility via those CD's or will that fail as well?
And if so, can I make a CD with my iBook that enables me to install Panther without my original Install CD's? And if so (these are a lot of 'ifs', I know), how can I save, for instance, the iLife that was on those original CD's, can I just copy the application to my external hard drive and then put them back afterwards?
I've given Apple a call to ask how much it would cost to buy a new Install CD and it was €95 (about $115)! So if anyone can help, I'd be very much obliged!
    Thanks!
    Kevin
    iBook 12 inch   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

If your friend's iBook is a "Late 2005" and yours is an "Early 2004", then his iBook would have come with Mac OS X 10.4. This copy of 10.4 will not install on any other kind of computer. However, you could buy a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.4. This would not get you the AppleWorks or iLife that originally came with your iBook, however. You could also buy a retail copy of iLife, but with the two purchases together, it would be cheaper to pay Apple for copies of your correct disks...
Although I'm not sure how I can find the processor speed without my iBook working.
If you open the keyboard, there will be a sticker inside that has some information about your iBook. It should say something like "1.2GHz G4/512/40/AP/BT". That would be a 1.2GHz G4 with 512MB of RAM (built-in), a 40GB hard drive, an AirPort card, and Bluetooth.

  • Having problems with Startup Disk Installing Panther

I'm having problems installing Panther, I currently have a 9.2 OS. I get a message that the startup disk could not select the new os as the start up disk. Has anyone had this problem before? I've done all my updates, firmware included. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Julie

I bought the disc on ebay, its for an emac.
That disk isn't compatible with your computer; it will only work on a specific eMac model. You need a retail Mac OS X installation package, which is available here.

  • Can I install Panther on an extra internal drive to swap into another G5?

Bear with me on this long explanation...
I have a G5 that won't boot (lock on grey apple screen and then the fans blow wildly). I can't get the optical drive door to open unless it's in target disk mode with my powerbook -- where the drive door opens fine...but not when trying to boot the G5 on it's own. Unfortunately - this is preventing me from booting from the G5 Panther install discs.
I used Disk Utility while in target disk mode to verify/repair the disk and the report says the drive is fine (which I know doesn't mean it is free from corruption)...but if I then try to boot the G5 on it's own --- grey screen and I'm stuck. Seems like the G5 startup disk has died.
Also tried to boot from a FW drive with a cloned copy on it. Holding down option on restart --- I get the icon for an OSX volume (which is the FW drive)... click on the icon to select it (doesn't seem to do anything) but if I then hit the right arrow icon -- it goes back to the frozen grey screen.
OK -- here is the question:
Can I use my wife's G5 that runs Tiger to install Panther from my G5's install discs onto an extra internal drive that I can drop into the empty drive bay on the Tiger G5 --- and then install that extra internal drive (hopefully with panther now installed) into my G5 as a brand new start up disk?
If so -- are there any things that I need to do other than the procedure above?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

When installing Panther on the extra internal drive using the G5 running Tiger --- can I just insert the install discs into the Tiger G5 optical drive while it is already running and perform the install onto the extra drive
No. You have to boot from the installer disc to install any OS.
or would I need to restart the Tiger G5 with the install disc inside the optical drive and hold down c on restart to reboot from the Panther install discs and select the extra drive as the install destination?
    Yes.

  • Problems installing Panther on G3 ibook

I recently bought panther off ebay to install on my 3 year old ibook G3 [700mhz, 640 RAM, 30g HD]. I am currently running 10.2.8 without problems.
During the installation process I got the message 'An error has occured during installation' 'Please try to reinstall' I've tried to install, in various ways, 5-7 times at this point with no luck.
I've tried upgrading, I've tried erasing the HD and installing, I've tried only installing/upgrading the necessary componets to run the system, all of which have ended in the same error message. The error occurs during the 'Preparing Base System Part 2' part of the installation process [somewhere around 4 minutes remaining].
I thought it was the discs I purchased, but I was able to install Panther on my external and boot the computer from there, so it seems the discs are good.
In my latest attempt I erased my HD and reinstalled 10.2 from my original disks, upgraded to the most current versions of everything through Software Update and tried the upgrade ... still getting the same error ...
Any suggestions of what might help?

    ibook G3   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Hi Again SloMocean!
Unfortunately, those CDs will not work on your iBook.
They are CDs that were designated to be shipped with a specific iBook model.
Although you have an iBook, it may not be exactly the same as the model that those CDs were intended for.
More info here Tip: Mac OS X Install CDs/Use On Multiple Macs.
You need a Full Retail Version of the Panther Install CDs, which can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, etc.
They are no longer available directly from the "Apple Store", as "Tiger 10.4.x" is the most up to date OS.
You may find one on this eBay Search Results Page, but CAVEAT EMPTOR, as you have discovered!
If you do an expanded search on eBay, or Amazon, you will probably find more.
Once again, make sure the CDs that you purchase, look like THESE.
Once 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update.
Shop Carefully, Read All Documentation, and Good Luck!

Well, it is mind bogling cause:
    1) OS 9.2.1 is installed and bootable
    2) OS X ver 0.3 is installed and bootable
    Both OS run fine.
I tried again this morning by booting with the Panther CD's:
    - still no possibility to repair OS 9
    - still offers only an Archive and Install, that failed.
I went to look in the Receipts file but there's only packages concerning OS 10.0, nothing on 10.3
I couldn't start in Single User to fiddle around with it maybe I could try stuff in Terminal
I had to leave for work,(yes even on Easter...) so I started the Apple Hardware Test in loop mode and I'll see around midnite if something shows up.
There's nothing important on the HD so I could erase everything and start over but I don't feel it will work since I've just did that.
    I think it's something else,
    - Bad CD (it's 10.3.0
    - Bad RAM (even though it's brand new, I'll have to check it with Memtest if I can run it)
    - Bad wiring somewhere inside
    - Bad luck...
If there's any other ideas, there welcome of course...
    Happy Easter all

  • Installing Panther without a password

    Hi!
I'd like to install Panther again, but I'd like to do it so that I no longer have a 'major password' let's say... Whenever I install something, I have to enter a password, so I was wondering if it's possible to install it without that password somehow. I mean, when I create my account, it just adds my existing password again.
    Thanx,
    polar
P.S. I thought i just might click the 'Erase & Install' option during installation... Or?

    polar:
You can do an erase and install, and set up your computer any way you want, although it is not advisable to set up without a password. Mac OS X security is linked to a password. Being able to install software without a password is a convenience of dubious advantage because then anyone can install on your computer including those who want to install malware, adware, spyware or viruses while you are online.
    Good luck.

  • Installing Panther on Grape iMac 333

    Hi
A friend bought a cheap 333 iMac and I'm trying to install Panther on it.
After much effort and upgrading the firmware I finally managed to upgrade it to 9.1.
I load the Panther disk and click the install. It tells me to restart to I click the restart button only for it to load back into OS 9.1 again.
I've tried holding C when starting to boot from the CD but it's not having that either.
The machine only has 64MB RAM so I'm not expecting it to be fast but it should at least instal or give me some feedback surely?
    Help appreciated.

    Roger Holden...
64MB will not run Panther, period. You need at least 128MB to boot.

  • Install Panther on second hard drive (Leopard on first)?

My G4 desktop has two internal hard drives. I work on the first and use the second only for storage. I recently installed Leopard on the first drive, and all went well. After that installation, I decided to install Panther (10.3.9) on the second drive, using the original install disks. Could't do it; my machine wouldn't boot up from the installation disk.
On the advice of phone tech support, I took these steps:
disconnected everything from the G4, including keyboard, monitor, power cord
reset power management (held down power key for 15 seconds)
reconnected only power cord, keyboard, and monitor
    reset PRAM on start up
put Panther install disk in CD drive
    restarted, holding down "c" key
Same result: the Apple logo appears on a pale gray screen but nothing else happens.
What should I try next? I'm assuming it's possible for me to use the original Panther installation disk as the start-up disk and to install Panther on my second internal hard drive, while Leopard is on the first. But maybe that's not a correct assumption?
    Will appreciate help.

Still can't get my G4 to recognize the original install Panther disks when I insert them into my CD drive and restart holding down the "C" key. I want to install Panther on my second internal hard drive; Leopard is installed on the main internal drive.
    I have tried the following:
    1) Reset Power Management (with everything unplugged)
    2) Plugged power, keyboard, and monitor back in
    3) Reset PRAM
    4) Restarted and held down "C" key. Still could not get CD to recognize the CD. (Screen was pale gray with darker gray Apple logo; stopped there.)
    5) Reset Power Management again (everything unplugged)
    6) Plugged power, keyboard, monitor back in
    7) Reset PRAM
    8) Restarted and held down Option key. Chose "CD" when given that option. Still could not get CD to recognize the CD. (Screen was pale gray with darker gray Apple logo; stopped there.)
Any other actions I should try? One forum respondent suggested I take out the Leopard-based hard drive and install Panther on the remaining drive. Would rather not do that if I don't have to.
    Help will be appreciated!

  • Re-installing Panther, keeping my settings

Hi, i need to re-install to panther because i bought it from a friend and want to change the short name and stuff like that...but how would i re-install panther and keep all my settings and files and programs on the laptop now?? Is that possible at all? thanks

If all you want to do is to change account names, you could just add a new account with the names the way you want them. Use System Preferences > Accounts. Then, click on the lock to make it open. You will need to have an administrator password for that. Then, click on the plus sign in order to add a new account. Here is where you can choose the names that you want. Since this will be your account, you should also make it an admin account.
If you really want to re-install, there is something called an Archive and Install which does most of what you want. If you select the correct option, it will keep your settings. However, some of your third party apps might not be kept. The Archive and Install does make a Previous System folder on your desktop and you can probably drag out additional items that you need.
