Installing pogoplug onto home network - any tips?

Hi all. I was keen to add a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive to my BT Infinity home network and decided to try something a little radical: The Pogoplug (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pogoplug-File-Media-Sharing-Device/dp/B003FZB6C8). However, the network doesn't seem to be picking it up. The troubleshooting guide indicates one of the following could be the reason:
Is your Pogoplug enabled device connected to Power? (YES)
Is the ethernet cable connected to your Pogoplug enabled device and to your router? (YES)
Does your router give out IP addresses to computers on your network (DHCP)? (NOT SURE...)
Do you have a firewall installed that blocks UDP, or is UDP disabled on your router? (NOT SURE...)
Anyone else got one of these and managed to install successfully?

I use a different make of NAS (Zyxel) and it works fine.
Answers to your questions.
Does your router give out IP addresses to computers on your network (DHCP)? YES (assuming home hub)
Do you have a firewall installed that blocks UDP, or is UDP disabled on your router? NO, not normally
That last question is not relevant if you are sharing on your local network only.
If you were sharing files over the Internet, then you would have to open up the correct ports, to allow incoming connections.

(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page). Here's a screenshot showing the particular links on the page that you should be clicking:
After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
(2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
(5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

Internet Slow---Last Resort---Install fresh copy of Tiger---Any tips?

I have an open topic about my situation where my internet is very slow using safari and firefox. I've done most of the suggestions in that post and now am considering reloading a fresh copy of Tiger.
When logging into a new, second account, the system seems to be faster than when I log into my usual account, thus this decision.
I currently have 6mbps download with 640kbps upload speeds and did a test just now and got 5.12mbps and 630kbps. Eventhough this looks very good, the system is slow when using my account.
I used CCC to backup all my files and would appreciate any tips if I should do anything else prior to installing a clean copy.

Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:

(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)

How do I get a new replacement computer to recognize my itunes media folder already installed on a home network drive?

My computer crashed and I have replaced it. But I haven't been able to get itunes on the new computer to recognize the itunes media folder that holds all my music on a home networked drive. How do I link them back together?

Was the library database stored or backed up to the networked drive? If so you can hold down shift as you start iTunes to reconnect to the database, otherwise you'll have to rebuild the library with the content.

I think i deleted itunes completely from my pc and tried to reinstall using remove/restore and have tried repeatedly for a week to download/install itunes to no avail - any tips on how to either retrieve or download new itunes as i have lost my music?

I tried to reinstall everything but I get an error because 1) the older version of bonjour cannot be removed and 2) an older version of quicktime cannot be removed which then says that itunes can not be installed without quick time.
Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour and QuickTime entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

File sharing home network doesn't work

I have tried to activate sharing and ticked file sharing, but cannot access my imac from other macs in my home. Any tips?

Please carefully read Apple's advice letter on File sharing. It works perfectly assuming you set it up correctly, if you still hvae trouble figuring it out call AppleCare or visit your local Apple Store and speak to a Genius.

Now restart the iPad.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

If you have an Intel Mac and have recently upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion; here is a post I made in another similar thread:
I do not have any experience with Final Cut, but if you have existing projects that you MUST access; then you are in need of a solution on your new iMac in Mountain Lion!
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta. Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion). While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
Workarounds:
1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
2. If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between Final Cut Pro or Lion/Mt. Lion;
3. Purchase a used Mac that will run Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta installed) and continue to run FCE on that Mac (you can actually use Screen Sharing with a "headless" used Snow Leopard Mac Mini and use the screen from your other Mac to view and work FCP in the Mac Mini environment);
2. Upgrade to an Intel compatible version of FCP (such as FCP X) and hope it converts your existing projects to its newer format correctly. There is much debate that the newer version of Final Cut are eliminating many needed features; for example Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 6 -- many users are staying with version 6;
3. Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and then install FCE in the Snow Leopard environment:

I have a Personal Video Recorder (Humax HDR-1010S), which supports DLNA, connected to my home network via Wi-Fi.
I want to play music from iTunes and view photos from iPhoto from my MacBook (which is also connected to the home network) via the PVR / TV / Home Cinema sound system. I understand that my MacBook (running OS X Mavericks) doesn't support DLNA server.
Is there any 3rd party software that I can install on my MacBook to provide DLNA server?

My recollection is that the iPhoto library has some fairly robust protections to prevent inadvertent or even deliberate changes being made that might have unwanted consequences. I'll take alook at my setup and let you know if I can see anything that might help you. Even if you get Serviio to "see" the iPhoto library, it almost ceratinly won't show the album structure and names. What I did is to export each iPhoto album to a standard folder with the appropriate folder name. These I keep on an external backup disc and Serviio can see these without trouble.

HT2305 I am using an Iomega Home Network Media Server Cloud Edition. I need to know to how to install Bonjour to the Iomega so that it will run my TiVo Desktop Program to transfer media files to/from the TiVo units to/from the Home Network Drive. Help ?

TiVo support has already advised me that Bonjour Browser is needed so that the TiVo can communicate with the Iomega. The Iomega already has installed Apples' AFP protocol.
The only way that I can currently transfer or access any files on the Iomega Home Network Cloud Drive with TiVo is if the folder on the Iomega Drive is listed in the TiVo Desktop Plus software that runs the TiVo server. This means that my laptop has to be continually running non-stop for files to transfer or for me to access them.
I am looking for a way where TiVo will recognize the Iomega Home Network Server just as it recognizes the other TiVo unit on my home network. TiVo menus have a place for adding an app that is TiVo compatiable; however, I have not been able to find any.
Can someone please help? TiVo has advised me that there 3rd Party software out in tech world that is capable of running the Tivo Desktop Server better than the TiVo Desktop Server Plus program itself but I have been unable to locate it..

IPad can't find ANY wifi networks or personal hotspot each time I return to my home network

I have an iPad 2 as well as iPad 4, iPhone 4 and Macbook Pro. Each of these connect fine to my home network, however my iPad 2 suddenly couldn't find any networks or my iPhone 4 personal hotspot, bluetooth or wifi.
I went to Singapore and hey presto, it could find and connect to wifi networks with ease.
Then I came home to Australia, couldn't find any networks or personal hotspots again. Went to work, same issue, couldn't find the network at work. So took it to the Apple Genius Bar and it worked automatically again without changing any settings. Reset to factory settings just incase this somehow helped getting it home.
Took it home, worked fine. Recovered from a previous backup and still worked fine.
Brought my ipad into work yesterday, couldn't find my personal hotspot or wifi networks. Took it home, can't find any networks. Reset my modem and it still can't find any networks (or my personal hotspot) even though all other devices automatically connect.
Any suggestions? I suspect when I take it to Japan next week it will probably work fine, then I'll come home and it probably won't. Is it some sort of software issue? Why would it stop working every time I take it out of my home network and bring it back?
I have all the latest updates.

Does the ipad have any management software put on by your workplace ? If so this my be somehow disabling your wifi. The other thing it may be is the wifi channel your wifi is broadcast on but as it happening to you with a lot of access points it prob isn't this it may be a hardware issue, you could take it To an apple store and if it works there try connecting it to your phone. You could also try this, go to general > one of the last options (between VPN and reset) is profiles (This only shows up if u have profiles installed) if you have profiles go into it and delete the profiles then restart. this may help. If you just did upgrade Lion, give it some time. I recall having similar problems and some articles mention heavy background work after install - such as re-indexing for Spotlight etc. I couldn't even copy from folder to folder or e.g. iphoto to folder on the same disk. Went away after a day or two though.
I do however still have a problem with AFP access to one of the lion machines - kills it's network adaptors rather quickly. No luck solving this so far :|

After installing Yosemite on both my Macs, all home network operations between the apple devices has gone south. Browsing folder on remote computer, transferring files between the computers - either via finder or through shared libraries on iTunes - everything is now crawling or simply stuck.
I thought my router may be the problem, but the Windows machine is working just fine when copying files to and from a Mac device.
Any solutions out there please?

If you see a lock icon in the upper right corner of the screen - then the screen orientation is locked.
Try the side switch above the volume rocker first and see if that unlocks the screen. If that didn't work, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to the control center and the lock icon is in the row of icons at the top all the way to the right.
If the screen is unlocked but still will not rotate, reset the iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the button
