Installing PowerPC Pro Apps on an Intel-based computer

I just installed the PowerPC version of Compressor 2 on a MacBook Pro and it works. I also installed Logic Pro 7 on the same and it works. How is this possible? I thought Pro Apps didn't run on the new platform? Or have I just killed my new machine?

I understand that and meant I haven't seen an increase in speed because I am still running PPC apps over Rosetta. It still seems odd to me that Pro Apps can run on Rosetta after all Apple said to the contrary. I'm still using Aperture 1.0.1 on my MacBook Pro and it behaves no differently (as far as I can see) than an Intel app like Final Cut Pro 5.1

can i install an entire Xp in my intel based mac mini?
    no boot camp.
how to do that if impossible?

    Hi Matthew!
Boot Camp will be the closest you'll come to your goal. A Mac is afterall intended to run Mac OS software first and foremost and Windows is only a secondary OS. But it is possible to boot into Windows after using Boot Camp to get it installed and then delete the Mac partition. You can always reinstall the Mac OS later.
Or you can still use Boot Camp to get Windows installed and just never boot back into Mac OS X (leaving it on its own partition). But why have Apple hardware just to do that? You'd be better off selling your Mac Mini and purchasing an Intel machine that will run Windows natively.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • LOGIC PRO APPLICATIONS UPDATE 4.0.2 ERROR JAVA SCRIPT on install of PRO APP

I have recently installed Logic 8.. Upon opening Logic 8 after installing . I get an error that says I need to install a pro application support version 4.0.2 in order to run Logic 8. I then download the App Supp. update version 4.0.2 and attempt to install it. Upon installation it scans my volumes and startup disk . Then it flags an error. (red exclamation point) stating while evaluating the volumes it has found an error in my java script.. I have already inserted my OSX disc. and went to disk utilities and repaired all permissions as well as booted up in safe mode (hold down shift on boot up) and repaired all permissions in disk utilities again.. Still having the same error.. I cant have one with out the other and have exhausted a week trying to figure this problem out.... I have seen a similar post about this problem but there were issues with the "postee" about not having the OSX install disk so there was never any closure with that one....
PLEASE HELP... I would love to celebrate a successful install of Logic 8

Good news, thanks for the report!
I was drawing a blank in that other thread, but while mulling it then seeing your new post... BINGO!

  • All apps crash on Intel based mac, when I try to print. Suggestions?

I just setup a New, Intel-based mac. I used the migration assistant, to transfer all account information, settings, and docs to the new machine, and everything went flawlessly. But,,,,,,,
When I try to print something, anything, from any application, the application crashes immediately.
    Should I:
Repair permissions (not a cure all, but probably doesn't hurt.)
Reset printing system in printer setup utility, or,,
    Take another course of action.
Doesn't seem to matter which printer is selected as default.

For interested parties: Resetting the printing system solved the problem, cleanly and neatly.
I have been advised to use this feature with discretion however, as it truly does indeed reset the entire printing system.

  • Problem with PowerPC app on an Intel-based Mac

I have an application called NetWorker that's PowerPC based. This is a client-server based application that allows Macs to be backed up via a network.
NetWorker comes with a process that starts up via a shell script when the Mac reboots. The problem is that the process crashes as soon as it starts.
Unfortunately, the developer has not put out a Universal binary of NetWorker. I think the process crashes because its trying to run a PowerPC software in Intel mode. I think that if I can get the software to start in PowerPC mode, it might actually work; but I have no idea how to modify the shell script to force the process to start in PowerPC mode. If anyone knows how to force a piece of software to start up via PowerPC mode, please let me know.

You cannot "force" a PPC application to open in Rosetta. It does so automatically. Only universal binary applications can be "forced" to open in Rosetta.
The problem you're having is more likely due to an inherent incompatibility of the software to run correctly on an Intel Mac and Intel version of OS X. This cannot be fixed without the developer updating the software. I don't think this will happen very soon given the EMC hasn't been putting much effort into updating Retrospect in a timely fashion. Were I you I would look for an alternative to NetWorker that is compatible with Intel Macs.
Unfortunately, I don't have any specific suggestions for the same type of software. Retrospect is available in server-client versions but it is a PPC only application. It does, however, work on Intel Macs.

  • How do I install Windows on my iMac (intel based) computer

Hi, I have all the software, Windows xp, and the parallels supporting software. The question is how do I load it onto my computer?

Just a friendly suggestion: update your sig - it is confusing to see the G5 iMac listed there while you are asking a question about the Intel iMac.
In your Utility Folder there's a BootCamp Assistant program. Start it up and make sure your printer has a nice stack of paper - about 25 pages if I recall properly. At the first screen once the program is running you'll have to options: Print Instructions & Proceed with the Installation. Select print and if your printer is slow, go get a cup of coffee.
The highlights: make sure you have a valid copy of XP (at least SP2) or Vista and have your Mac OS installation disk handy, it has files you'll need once Windows has finished installing. The first step is to partition the drive - unless your computer is brand new, I recommend that before partitioning you start up with your Mac installer disk, run Disk Utilities, and repair the drive. When BootCamp Assistant partitions your drive you have to decide how much space to give it - 20GB to 40GB should be plenty unless you are going to use Windows for lots of games. Once the partitioning is finished, pop in the Windows installer and click on the install Windows button that BootCamp Assistant gives you. Now you are in Windows land and after you have entered your Windows Account name and gotten to the Windows desktop, eject the Windows disc, pop in the Mac installer, and let it install the BootCamp drivers. And finally, while running Windows, visit the Apple Support site and download the BootCamp 2.1 upgrade. There are several different versions depending on which version of Windows you are running.

  • Question: Installing 10.5 on a non-intel based mac...possible?

Can someone clarify whether or not Leopard(10.5) can run properly on a PowerPC G5?
    Thanks!

Not only can it run, it runs perfectly well. If you do install it, make sure to download the [10.5.2|http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1052comboupdate.html] update immediately after you install it.
Leopard is quite different in many respects from Tiger, and has a lot of new features that will take a bit of practice getting used to, but it will be worth it.

  • Will iMac Intel based computer see Sony DCR-HC96?

Anyone out there had experience downloading image data from the Sony DCR-HC series camcorder to iMovie? I under that a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire connection via Sony's Handycam station is required. Optimally, iMovie should open automatically. I've read some conflicting reports in these forums. Any information would be appreciated. THANKS.
iMac Intel Core Duo.   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Richard Raub,
When you say "image data" are you talking about Photos or Movies.
For photos I imagine a USB connect would be required to transfer the photos.
For video a firewire connection is required.
iMovie should recognize the camcorder connected by firewire and allow you to import the mini DV tape to computer/iMovie.
This is a SD camcorder that shoots 4:3 and has a 16:9 shooting mode(not true widescreen)
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=833479&tstart=0
I've never experienced iMovie opening automatically when any type of device was connected to the computer thru any type interface. Maybe other members know of this feature
Are you having problems or is the question just for informational purposes.

  • Mac OS server 10.4 working on intel based ?

I just bought (a few weeks ago) the MAC OS server 10.4 M9768Z/A, at the moment this is installed on a mac mini G4. I would like to make sure it is going to work on a intel based MAC. it sounds like X server 10.4.7 does but I think the CD I have received are 10.4.6.
Could someone confirm that I am not going to have any problem to install my xserver package to a intel based machine once my testing are completed on my minimac ?
    Thanks

Have you actually asked Apple what to do about it, rather than just complaining about what you don't know is a problem?
Since every system comes with up-and-running support I would think your first course of action would be to contact their support department for advice. I'll take a guess that they'll mail out the latest version for a nominal shipping charge.

  • Nudge function after Pro App update 4.0.1

Can anyone using one of the new MacBook Pros (2.2 or 2.4GHz) verify that the nudge command (Apple key + Arrow) is or is not working after installing the Pro Apps update 4.0.1?
Mine is not, and I'm trying to find out is it's the update or part of the ongoing MCP/Motion problem or something specific to my system.

Thanks Bert for confirming this for me.
Txiquim, I believe you have the MBP software update 1.0 installed - yes? That is probably why yours is working - of course you're crashing all the time though because of this (per your posts). Also, you're probably using a different keyboard layout (other then USA, Mexico perhaps?), which is why your nudge command isn't Command+Arrow.

  • Uninstall an OSX or Pro Apps Update

    Hi,
I would like to be able to reverse an update after installing it because sometimes that update creates a confilct with other applications running, such as in my current case.
I installed a pro apps update and now postgresql will not start...
Is there any way, without using time machine, to back out of an update?
I usually use time machine, but I'm waiting for a thunderbolt to e-sata adapter.
    Please let me know.
The errors I am receiving are:
could not connect to server: No such file or directory (PG::Error)
Is the server running locally and accepting
connections on Unix domain socket "/var/pgsql_socket/.s.PGSQL.5432"?
    And
Could not start on port 5432
    Thanks in adavance.
    Brian McDonough

    That's a great idea.
I usually have backups to revert to, similar to the solution you're talking about, but, for once, I am working on the "razor's edge" to convert my external drive system to thunderbolt from esata.
I don't think it's possible to back out of software updates, now handeled through the App Store in Mountain Lion and I think you are confirning that with your answer, but is there some way to make that a feature request?
I have another laptop running an older version I can use in the meantime, but how easy would it be to back out of the software update I just executed if it were a feature of the App Store?
Do you know how to make feature requests?
As it stands, I will probably have to wait for a patch from postgresql in order to continue to use my new laptop as a programming environment.
