Installing Powerpivot for Sharepoint 2013 with SQL Server 2008 R2

Hi,
We are currently setting up a Sharepoint 2013 Enterprise farm with the backend database server being SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 - my question is can you install  Powerpivot for Sharepoint 2013 in this configuration and if so what are the steps?
Thanks in advance!

Here is Microsoft's documentation to Configure Power Pivot for SharePoint 2013

  • Can we install PowerPivot for SharePoint on a SQL cluster?

We are going to deploy SharePoint 2013 with PowerPivot for SharePoint (installed from SQL Server media). According to what I've read out there for a small or medium farm, the recommendation is to install PowerPivot for SharePoint on
every SharePoint application server in the farm. However, accoding to the licensing doc I've pasted below, PowerPivot can be run outside the SharePoint farm. We are going with SQL Server 2012 Enterprise edition. PowerPivot requires a SQL
Server license for each server. To save money on licenisng, can we install PowerPivot for SharePoint on the 2 SQL Server cluster nodes (as a separate instance of course)?

    Hi Vincent,
PowerPivot for SharePoint is an Analysis Services instance in tabular mode. This
whitepaper mentions that clustering Analysis Services in SharePoint-integrated mode is not supported (page 8 under SSAS Server Modes.) You can, however, install it as a standalone
instance on the nodes of the cluster and let SharePoint handle the load balancing.
My apologies for the confusion on installing the SharePoint binaries on the PowerPivot instance. You don't need to install the SharePoint binaries if it is outside of the SharePoint farm. I was looking at my build documentation where I have both Reporting
Services and PowerPivot on the same machine with the same reason - reduce licensing cost - and similar to the 3-tier topology but with all of the service application and content databases on the database tier.

Do we need to install Analysis service on sharepoint server box or not? if yes, then what are steps to follow it?

  • Installing SharePoint 2013 with SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition

    Hi,
Can we use SQL Server 2012 Developer edition with SharePoint 2013?  One thing that came to my mind was setting max degree of parallelism, is that supported in Developer edition?  Looking forward to your assistance here.
    Thanks,
    kashif

    I'm slightly incorrect. See http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/4/A/64A1EC8F-F575-41E1-9D34-821FA9F98F8E/SQL_Server_2012_Licensing_Reference_Guide.pdf.
Licensing SQL Server for Non-production Use
The SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition is a full-function version of the SQL Server software—with all the
features and capabilities of the Enterprise edition—licensed under the Developer Tools model, which is a “per
user” model. One license is required for each person that accesses or uses the software.
When using SQL Server software for development, test or demonstration purposes, only the users are licensed
and there is no need for a corresponding license for the actual server systems running SQL Server software in
    this case.
As long as only licensed users have access to the software, customers can install as many copies of the software
on any number of servers that are used exclusively for development, test or demonstration purposes. This
is significant, because it allows customers to run the software on multiple devices (for testing purposes, for
example) without having to license each non-production server system.
But no, as you can see above, you'll have no issues with the software (Developer Edition is Enterprise Edition with licensing restrictions, but no functionality restrictions).

  • PowerPivot for SharePoint 2013 experience

    Hi,
Does anybody have practical experience with PowerPivot for SharePoint (especially SharePoint 2013) to implement a self-service BI scenario in an on premise environment?  Some questions that I’m particular interested in:
    • What major problems did you experience during the actual implementation?
    • Experience in connection to existing SQL Server Data Warehouses as a PowerPivot data source?
    • Authentication of “SSAS server in SharePoint mode” to existing SharePoint 2013 farm
    • Resource Load on existing SharePoint application and SQL Server, for example does it make sense to create a dedicated application server for the Excel /PowerPivot service application, for performance / future scalability reasons?
    • Hardware suggestion for a dedicated “SSAS server in SharePoint mode” for a total of 1000 PowerPivot users
    Thanks

    Hi Ibmkahm2,
According to your description, you need to implement business intelligence in SharePoint Server 2013, right?
The business intelligence tools for SharePoint Server 2013 include Power View for SharePoint, SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services for SharePoint, Power Pivot for SharePoint, Excel Services, PerformancePoint Services, and Visio Services. Here are some
    useful links for you reference.

  • SharePoint 2003 and SQL Server 2008

Can the SharePoint 2003 SQL Server 2000 database (backend) be migrated to SQL Server 2008?  In other words, we want to use SharePoint 2003 with SQL Server 2008.
    Thank you.

    Hi there
I can confirm that SharePoint 2003 SQL Server 2000 Databases can be backed up and restored to SQL 2008 R2.
Stop all services and web on your SharePoint server before the move.
Backup all your SQL 2000 databases.
Restore them on your new SQL 2008/R2 database server
Setup a SQL Alias (make sure you DONT set the alias to 'Dynamic Port' or you may get the error below) on the SharePoint servers and after restarting SharePoint everything worked 100%.
    Kind regards
    Riccardo
Error if using Dynamic port on Alias .
If you move the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 databases to another computer
that is running SQL Server 2000, you may receive an error message that is
similar to the following when you try to access the portal site:
    Array cannot be null.
    Parameter name: Source
For example, you receive this error message when you click the link that is
displayed on the Web Parts Maintenance page. This error message may not be
caused by a Web Part issue. You may receive this error message in situations
when the TCP port that SQL Server 2000 uses is different from the TCP port
that SQL Server 2000 used on the original computer. Use Client Network
Utility to verify that the port that SQL Server 2000 uses is correct.
PS. Please remember to mark your question as answered if you got good advice.

  • SharePoint 2013 and SQL Server 2014

Does SharePoint 2013 supports SQL Server 2014 for Reporting Services, PowerPivot

Yes it does (or rather, SSRS 2014/PowerPivot 2014 support SharePoint 2013). They also support SharePoint 2010.

My question is can I use this alias to setup SharePoint  or I need to configure the HA AlwaysOn group for SgharePoint  as suggested in the article below:

    BalaiP

You do not want to use a SQL Alias with an AG Listener. Just point SharePoint straight at the AG Listener. You will need to manually add any accounts to non-primary instances. You do not need to add them to individual databases, of course. You will also
need to manually set MAXDOP to 1 on non-primary instances.

  • Using BizTalk Enterprise Edition 2009/2013 with SQL Server Standard Edition vs Enterprise Edition

    Hi All,
I would like to know what are the Drawbacks of using BizTalk Server Enterprise Edition 2009/2013 with SQL Server Standard Edition vs Enterprise Edition.
We are currently using Enterprise Edition.
    1) Are there any adverse performance constraints? Microsoft mentions to use SQL Server Enterprise Edition for "Optimal Performance" but does not expand on the topic.
    2) Any features missing?
    2) Is there a supported way to downgrade SQL Enterprise to Standard for an exisiting BTS Environment?
    Thanks!

    1) SQL Standard is limited to 4 CPU's and 64GB of memory while Enterprise is 8 CPU and 2TB or memory.
    2) The only BizTalk feature dependency on a SQL Enterprise feature is BAM Real-Time Aggrigations which requires Analysis Services RTA.
    3) Yes, but it's not a SQL downgrade really, you would move the BizTalk databases:
