Installing Printer from terminal in MAC OS 10.6

Hello everyone!
I have 30 Imacs and 1 Xerox DocuPrint N2125. The Imacs are bound to Active and Open directory. The printer has a reservation on a windows print server running server 2003. I manage the Imacs from a Mac OS X server (10.6.4) in conjunction with ARD (v3.3.2). I would like to know if there is a way to send a UNIX command such that the command installs the printer on the client computer. I want to avoid touching each Imac and opt for the mass printer deployment with one click option. Does anyone know how to do this? After I figure out how to install the printer via the terminal, all I have to do is setup a task in ARD which executes that command to the managed machines. Thank you in advance,
-Andres

Thank you for the information,
I looked at CUPS a few years ago and later forgot all about it. I searched the site and found the PPD file associated to the printer listed above. I'll keep you updated as to my progress.

  • Installing packages in terminal in mac os x 10.6.2

    **** all =),
I am sorry if I put this topic in a wrong group but I am here first time. I feel a bit overwhelmed here.
I found that there are some applications which can be installed only from terminal because for os x 10.6.2 there's no binaries yet. Can someone please give me a link or explain how to install those applications in terminal. I have already install Xcode package.
    thanks in advance

In that case, you just need to be asking in the right place, which isn't here, but you're close. There are a couple developer forums, found under Mac OS X Technologies on the main discussions page. Here's a direct link:

Of course, I still think that "straight from the horse's mouth" is the best bet.

  • I'm running Adobe 9 pro on snow leopard and when I save or print from word for mac 14 the bottom gets cuts off

I'm running Adobe 9 pro on snow leopard and when I save or print from word for mac 14 the bottom gets cuts off. Can someone help?

Ah! You're creating a PDF out of Word through Acrobat. The cutoff is most likely being affected by the printer chosen.
When you call up the print dialogue in Word, check to see what printer is being used. If it's a typical inkjet printer, Acrobat is using the print margins of that printer as the cutoff area. Since most such printers can't print to the last inch and half or so of the paper, that's where it would be cut off.
Near the bottom, under the preview of the document, click on the Page Setup button. It doesn't really matter which printer you select here. Under Paper Size, choose Manage Custom Sizes. Under the Non-Printable Area heading, choose the same printer and set the paper size you're using.
Note that the unprintable margins for that printer will be filled in automatically. That's what's being cut off. Click the + button to create a modified version. The default will be "Untitled". Give it a new name if you want. Then set all of the margins to zero. Click OK. Now you'll have that as a choice under Paper Size. Doesn't matter that the actual printer can't use this setting since you're going to a PDF. Click OK to get back to the main Word print dialogue.
Now choose Save as Adobe PDF. It should give you an exact duplicate of what's on screen in Word since as far as Acrobat is concerned, your "printer" has no unprintable margins.

  • Trying to add a network printer. I downloaded and installed driver from manufacturer, but mac still reporting error

I need to install a printer on my Macbook Pro. I downloaded and installed the driver from the manufacturer, Brother MFC 7820N. Then clicked the plus on add printer from System Preferences. I selected the printer I want to add as a nearby printer and the name and location populated.
The printer widget tells me it is looking for software to install. I already installed the software. Then I get an error saying it can't find software on the apple support server. When I try to select software to install, the dialog box is empty, so I can't select the software I downloaded.

  • Can't print from Windows to Mac

I've always had trouble printing to a printer attached to my Mac from Windows. Bonjour used to see the printer, but I could only occasionally actually print. For a while everything but PDFs worked, then even text stopped. As a last resort I tried the "reset printing system" option in System Preferences and then re-added the printer, but now Bonjour doesn't see it at all. I can browse to it via SMB at \\macname\printername, but all I can do is print a test page as Administrator. Regular print jobs and non-admin test pages just disappear - not in the queue on either client or server. Setting it up as an IPP printer instead didn't help.
I'm at the end of my rope here, and any troubleshooting tips are welcome. I'm an IT guy, so technical details are very welcome: TCP ports to check for listeners on, services to look for, registry settings on the Windows end, anything.
    Details:
    Server:
    Mac OS X 10.6.2
HP Photosmart D7560 printer connected via USB using HP Photosmart driver
    Clients:
Windows XP, Windows Vista (32-bit), Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
All on the same LAN (wireless), no trouble with TCP/IP connectivity (can ssh into the Mac from the Windows boxes, etc). Both Windows Firewall and UAC are turned off on the Vista/7 boxes, guest access is enabled on the Mac in Sharing preferences...
    Any help welcome.
    Thanks!

I followed the instructions at http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3012.html and am having the same issue. Whether setting up manually or using Bonjour, it seems that you have to select an Apple Driver. The problem is that the Windows 7 does not provide Apple drivers. Luckily, I have an old XP installation CD so I can access the printer drivers I need, but because I already installed the printer drivers from my printers CD Windows will automatically install with that driver, not giving me the "have disk" option.
So I tried to install with Bonjour again, which allowed me to pull up the drivers from teh XP installation disk, but then gave me an error that I didn't have permissions to install the selected printer.
So I deleted the Canon driver for my printer from Windows 7 and went through the process described at http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3012.html again. This time I was able to select the Apple Color Laserwriter printer from the XP installation CD, but I got an error message saying that Windows was unable to find an appropriate driver.
At this point, after a couple hours trying to do a simple file share, which should only take 30 seconds, I'm giving up being able to print to a printer connected to a mac from my Windows 7 laptop. Now I have to open files on the mac from the network file share to print.
Mixed having both Macs and Windows machines on the same network is a recipe for a headache.

  • Someone tell me why is it so difficult to print from my Intel Mac Mini

I'm so frusrated at this Intel Mac Mini of mine. I wish honest to God that I never bought this evil little machine.
    I have the following printers:
    HP Photosmart 7550
    HP Laserjet 1012
    Canon MP830
I can't get anything to print! It so **** frustrating. I switched my wife from her WinXP to a Intel Mac Mini (10.4.6). She hates the Mac Mini because she can't print anything.
Why is it so difficult? Please someone enlighten me.
After months (not kidding) of searching on the web I was able to get the Photosmart 7550 to print using one of the gimp drivers, but I couldn't get it to change the paper type or quality. So that tells me I can't print any photos from my Mac. Need to use the WinXP box.
Then I was able to get the 1012 printing by selecting "open using rosetta" for the Printer Setup Utility, and selecting the "HP LaserJet 4 series - Gimp-Print v5.0.0-beta2". So now I could at least print BW docs. Great the Mac Mini is not a total waste. Then I updated software, which include the Mac mini SMC Firmware Update. I don't know what did it, but now I can't print to the 1012 anymore. ARGHH!
I tried deleting the Library/Printer/HP directory, Reseting the Printing System, Restarting the CUPs, Installing PDDs, Installing the gimp drivers. What the ****! Why do I need to do any of this? I thought the Mac was suppose to be so easy. With all those **** commercials talking about how the Mac can do anything a PC can do, you would think one of those things is being able to print.
Those people making those commericals should try using the "Printer Setup Utility" program. That will change their tune. First you have to search for your printer, then pick the Printer Model, and then pick the specific model. And God forbid you click to fast, oops you've now picked a generic printer, needs to start all over again. There's no back button. You've already committed to the generic printer type. Now you have to open the Printer Setup Utility again and delete the generic printer and go search for your printer again. Lame.
Don't get me started with the Canon MP 830. I thought, ok maybe its because the 1012 and 7550 are older printers. I'll go buy a new printer - they must have current drivers for that. Canon tells me that the MP 830 is only a single OS machine, meaning you can only connect it to a windows machine and only other windows machines can print from it, or connect it to a Mac, and only other Macs can use it - Again, Lame.
Really I wanted to love the Mac OS. When I first got it, I was loving it. But what good is it if I can't print. I searched the web and it seems I'm not the only person having issues with printing.
I hate this Intel Mac Mini with every fiber of my being. Ok, maybe my printing woes are only because it's a Intel chip, and the PPC macs are golden. But come on, if you can't print from a computer, what good is it?
Please, someone help me. Otherwise, anybody want to buy a Intel dual core Mac Mini?
mac mini duo core Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You have two different issues: HP and Canon.
I don't know if I believe the Canon people. Windows XP has lots of different print options. Try installing Bonjour on Windows and then setting up a networked, Color Apple Laserwriter PS printer using "http://macmini.local:631" (assuming macmini is the name of your Mac). I have done this before (though not on a Canon). I am sure Canon will only support a standard configuration and this is not quite standard. Give it a try. It doesn't sound like it can hurt anything in your current setup.
For the HP, you might have to just wait for an updated driver from HP. HP has always had this problem. They are a huge printer company and I'm sure they get Apple hardware and OS versions before anybody else in the world. And yet, it seems as if they don't even begin working on their drivers until Apple officially releases a new OS. HP drivers are always the last to show up for a new OS and the first to break. If you get it working under MacOS 10.4.6, and then upgrade to 10.4.7, it is very likely that the HP drivers will stop working.
Unlike some of the other big companies, HP seems to have made the transition from Classic MacOS to MacOS X seamlessly. Their printer driver software works just as well on MacOS X as it did under MacOS.

  • Having problem with printing from xp to mac shared printer (HP LJ M1005).

    I have 2 printers - HP LaserJet M1005 MFP, HP DeskJet 3845.
Both are connected via USB to MacPro and shared.
I have 3 laptops - MacBookPro, IBM ThinkPad T42 (winxp) and HP Compaq nw8000 (winxp).
All these computers are connected via router.
I'm able to print from MacBookPro on both printers.
On IBM and HP I installed Bonjour service and added both printers.
Printing to HP DeskJet 3845 works fine, but HP LaserJet M1005 MFP doesn't.
What happens - When I print from IBM or HP, the job shows up in MacPro, but after 1sec status is changed to "Stopped".
I really don't understand where is problem...
I tried different drivers - Generic driver, HP LaserJet m1005 driver, some other LaserJet drivers. Nothing works...
When I connect HP LaserJet M1005 MFP directly to PC and install drivers, it works fine.

    Two possible solutions.

  • Problems printing from PC to MAC on wireless network

I've just spent 3 hours trying to get my 3 Vista PCs to print to the printer that is connected to my iMAC.
The iMAC is running Snow Leopard. The printer is a HP Deskjet F300 series and is connected to the iMAC via USB. The MAC and the printer work fine this way. The iMAC is connected to my wireless router for my home network.
The Vista PCs have BONJOUR for Windows installed. They all see the Deskjet printer via the iMAC (I have allowed printer and file sharing), and I have set this printer as the default printer. However, when I attempt to print on any of the PCs, nothing happens on the iMAC or Deskjet printer. So obviously the print info is not being received on the iMAC.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I was able to get my HP DeskJet printer running using Windows XP in Parallels, by doing the following:
Select 'Add a new printer' in Windows
Select 'Local Printer' in the dialog box (auto detect and install should be off), click next.
Choose 'Create a new port' and "Standard TCP/IP Port'. Click next.
For the printer IP address, enter the address of the base station ie. 10.0.1.1. The port name will be filled automatically. Click next.
For the device type, choose 'Hewlet Packard Jet Direct', then click Finish.
Choose your printer from the list and follow the rest of the prompts to install and configure the driver.

  • IPP Printing from Linux or Mac to Windows server

I have windows server 2003 R2 ent with ipp printing installed. All windows clients are ale to connect, install and print to a shared printer via ipp. When connecting via a linux or mac machine, I am not able to print. I am asked for the creditionals to print but it does nothing.
The ipp server is set to accept authentication via Intergrated Windows Authentication. I had read this is compatible with firefox and other browsers.
Is there any particular settings I am missing on this one?
The goal is to require only domain users access to the printers.

    Hi,
    Thank you for posting here.
Since we can print from Windows clients properly, it indicates Windows Printing Server is working OK. Base on my research, we may have to setup a CUPS server so that Linux client communicate with CUPS Server and CUPS communicate with Windows Printer Server using IPP. For your reference:

  • How to print from linux to Mac printer using cups - password?

I think that I have done the correct things to share my printer from my OS X 10.4 Mac mini (my MacBook is happy to print on the Mac mini printer), and my Ubuntu Linux computer seems to be ready to print using cups. Linux can see the printer on Mac mini, but when I try to send a print job the Mac refuses access. I assume the problem is that the Linux computer needs to send the Mac a password, but I don't know how to do that -- where in the sequence of information coming from the Linux computer the password should be, what format, how to get the Linux computer to send the info through lpadmin or the GUI. All that.
Can anyone help? Preferably with step-by-step instructions for the complete idiot. I have seen FAQs on printing, but there is no information about passwords. And most are focussed on smb rather than cups.

I use linux and print through the Mac - but I don't have the trouble you are describing.
There are 2 places to enable print sharing on Mac - have you done both of those?
What protocol are you using - the easiest for CUPS is IPP (port 631). I have an Ubuntu computer at home - describe exactly how you add the printer and I'll be able to follow through.

we have like 5 mac computers in the building and about 20 pcs.
all the pcs and all the 32 bit macs work fine.
the 2 64 bit macs will not print in landscape only from photoshop cs4
i can print from indesign in landscape and illustrator in landscape.
somewhere i read that i could remove the preferences file and that would maybe fix it.
    that did nothing.
i have tried a variety of different files and sizes.
my design artists are specialized in photoshop and it was working up to about 2 weeks ago.
nothing has changed in this time.
so i am wondering what could cause this.
    please help.

What is a 64 bit Mac? It might be easier to describe the kitty version of these Macs and if all have been fully patched in system software and in programs.

  • How can page margins be changed when printing from Firefox for Mac OS X? (This is easy to do on the Windows version.)

Page margins can be adjusted from the page setup menu in the Windows version of Firefox, but there does not appear to be an equivalent menu in the Mac version.

    Hi onlyhuman2-
I'm not familiar with the printing options using Windows. I've found this article on editing print options for a Mac: [[Printing a web page]]
That shows you how to shrink the page, and to edit page headers and footers. I'm hoping that covers the margins you were hoping to change.
    Good luck!

  • MX890 only prints from rear tray/Mac

My MX890 printer always wants to print from the rear tray.  I have set the option in the printer window to print from the cassette.  I even change the "automatic feed" in the print dialogue window that comes up on my computer to "cassette," and it still gives me the msg that there is no paper in the rear tray.  It used to work if I did this, but now has stopped working.  How the heck to I fix this?  I'm using a MacBook Pro running Yosemite.  I have updated all the recommended software/drivers from the Canon website.  Thanks
    Ellen

    Hi ellenann9424,
The machine will automatically feed paper from the rear tray when media types other than plain paper (such as photo paper) are selected in the printer driver, or on the printer itself when printing.  If you have already verified that the cassette is selected as the paper source in the printer driver and on the printer itself, please ensure that the paper type selected in both locations is set to plain paper, as all other media types will attempt to feed from the rear tray, even if the cassette is selected as the paper source.
    Hope this helps!

  • Why can't I print from CS5? Mac and Snow Leopard

I can't print from CS5. I have a Canon Pro 9000 MKII, and all drivers are up to date. Whenever I need to print I have to close the image and reopen it in CS4. I have an iMac running Snow Leopard and can print from all other programs.
When I do try to print from CS5, I get a dialog box (see attached). If I click the "Cancel" button (the only option) the print command in the menu is grayed out until I restart CS5. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

One other thing to try is changing the name of the printer queue, which may convince Photoshop and the system that it's a different printer, so old print settings will not be used.
Open your System Preferences, select "Print & Fax", and then select your printer.
Click the "Open Print Queue..." button. When that opens, select the "Printer Setup" icon (it should be rightmost in the top row), and then change the name of the printer. and OK.

  • Why do I get faint horizontal lines when I print from elements 12 mac

why do I get faint horizontal lines when I print from elements 12 mac

    Hi Ben,
I can't reproduce that behavior.  The only two things I can think of at the moment are (1) you accidentally added a shortcut as a panel shortcut instead of a diagram shortcut or (2) the name of the object you specified isn't for the "Multiply" node, but for some other node (you said "Multiplication" in your initial post) that can only be dropped in certain places (i.e. maybe it's a node that is only valid in Simulation diagrams).  Can you post the following lines from your LabVIEW INI file so I can look into it further:
    QuickDropDiagramShortcuts
    QuickDropPanelShortcuts
    Let me know,

    Edit:  Yeah, what he said.
