Installing programs across user accounts.

I have recently installed a whole load of new programs on my user account, but my girlfriend can't access any of these on her user account. Is there any way of doing this, without installing the same software again on the 2nd account, as surely it's on the computer somewhere already?!?

Hi and a warm welcome to the forums!
Was your account an Admin account?
Did it ever ask install for all users?
There are several Applicationd folders, one at Root for everyone, and one in each User's folder too.
Not certain if this'd work, maybe Permissions changes needed for her to access, but you might try dragging them from your Applications folder to the one at Root, but many will have stuff in the User's Library needed elsewhere, so you really may need to re-install them all anyway.

  • Best way to manage media (photos/music/videos) across user accounts in Lion?

Yesterday I clean installed Lion. I copied only that what I need from my TimeMachine backup. The apps were reinstalled as well. Now, I've set up iPhoto to link to my library in the Users>shared folder so that its available across all user accounts shared with my family members. Same is the case with iTunes library. But with integration with iCloud and @me.com or @mac.com accounts, I'm not sure how each one of us can have out own accounts configured in these libraries while they are shared. Keeping this in mind, what is the best way to share music, videos and photos across user accounts and yet have the apps... iTunes, iPhoto, etc, know our individual settings in out respective user accounts?
For iTunes should I just create a referenced library? Will that let me sync my photos and videos to my iPhone 4? If so, how?
For iPhoto I guess i''ll have to create separate libraries for each user account and then have one common for our shared photos. But thats just plain complicated for users who aren't tech savvy in my family.
Please advice before I create a mess with my media again!

Thanks for the idea, but that strategy introduces problems of its own. Now I have two iPods (a 5G and a touch) that sync with one library and an iPhone that syncs with another. This makes my life workable on the road, but at home, it means I have to change iTunes libraries when I sync different devices. It also means that, when I download new content, if I want to take it with me on my MBP, I have to synchronize it between two libraries. That sounds like an ugly situation.

  • Software always installs to Domain Admin account on connected PC-cant install to Domain User account

I have completed the following steps:
Set up Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials successfully
Successfully connected a Windows 8.1 Pro PC to the network by running the Essentials Connector software
The PC has the following users: Original local account created when I installed Windows 8, Domain Admin account created when I ran the Essentials Connector account, Domain User created after PC was connected to the network.
Everything seems to be working fine. I have installed MS Office 365 Pro, Skype, various other applications while logged in as the Domain User. Every one of these installs triggered a UAC prompt, which was expected, and after entering the Domain Admin
credentials the install proceeded successfully. After install, the software was available to the Domain User, shortcuts appeared in the Start Menu or Desktop, appropriate directories were created in the Documents folder.
All except for 3 applications - upon being prompted for permission to install, I enter the Domain Admin credentials, installation proceeds, but the software is installed to the Domain Admin account-not the Domain User account. Shortcuts appear on the Domain
Admin desktop-Not the Domain User account, etc. I've tried:
Downloading a new copy of the software to the Domain User desktop & running it from there
    Right-click file, Install as Admin
click file, Install as a different user
Right clicking file, Properties>Compatibility & changing compatibility settings
Right clicking file, Properties>Compatibility>Run as Administrator
None of these options have changed the result, the software is still installed to the Domian Admin account as opposed to the Domain User account. Any idea why these 3 software wont install correctly but everything else has? Any suggestions as to how to install
the software to the profile that doesn't involve making the Domain User an Administrator? Thanks for any help!

    Hi voltron5,
Many programs may provide options: "install for everyone" or "just for current user", when you install them.
Please check if there are such options during the installation process.
If those three programs are all third-party applications. I suggest you should contact with the corresponding
    support and confirm this.
If those three programs are Microsoft applications, would you please let me know specific information of those
three applications? Such as their names and so on. Meanwhile, when complete the installation, please check the software path was added in administrator environment variables or system environment variables.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,

  • Share a mounted AFP volume across user accounts on the same computer

    Hi all,
I have a Mac Mini with several attached disks (HFS+). I'm using it as a file server, to share these disks over my home network. I'm mounting these as AFP server volumes on a second computer (MacBook Pro). This all works fine. Both are running MacOS 10.6.2.
The problem is that my MacBook Pro has two user accounts, and when I mount AFP volumes under one user, the other user can't access them. It seems that mounted AFP volumes are assigned read/write permissions for only the user that mounted them.
Ideally, I'd like to mount a volume once, and have it accessible from both user accounts. I've tried changing permissions in the AFP volume's Get Info window, but the changes don't take effect.
Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks!!

I'm no expert in this department, but I believe that your question was the reason Apple started the 'Group' calendar. Check this page out:

    Perhaps your answer lies within.

  • Sharing music libraries across user accounts

We've got 1 Mac and 4 users with iPods. I'd like us to share music, but use our own accounts to manage our music and iPods. I've seen these articles but am still a little perplexed:
    Multiple iPods:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432
    Multiple Accounts:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195
The Multiple Accounts article starts off with a Tip indicating you don't need to use any of the further instructions if you have the latest iTunes and OS:
"Tip: With iTunes 4.5 or later and Mac OS X 10.3 or later, it's easy to use the Fast User Switching feature in Mac OS X with the Music Sharing feature in iTunes to share your songs with other users on the same computer."
But if you follow the link to Music Sharing it has nothing to do with Multiple Accounts and is really about Multiple Computers. Also the music sharing only allows you to listen to other users music; not copy it onto your iPod. Also the music sharing requires you to perpetually leave iTunes running on any account you want to view the library from. None of these address the main issue.
    Anyone have some simple instructions?
We want to all be able to copy some of the same music onto our iPods from our own user accounts.

  • Why can't I share my music across user accounts on my home  PC?

    Hi
I'm having a frustrating time trying to get Itunes to share music files with my wife's user account on my computer. We both use Itunes, but we have our music stored individually in our 'My documents' folders, leading to duplicate songs on the hard drive.
I have tried various methods to allow my wife to use my music files. First I set my music to 'shared' and her's to 'look for shared music' with no success. Then I tried moving all the music to the shared documents folder. Now I can use her music but she can't use mine. My filenames are in green and her's are in black. I know that has something to do with encrypted files but surely in the shared folder she should be able to access them. I moved these files from My documents, which is not accessable to her. Is that why?

Sorry. I have realised that i need to decrypt the files for them to work.

  • Not finding library from shared folder across user accounts

Hello all knowledgeable people. Hopefully one of you will tell me what I am doing wrong.
I recently moved my iTunes Media Folder to a Time Capsule. In iTunes (10.0.1) on the user account where the collection was and subsequently moved, I can see, listen & watch all iTunes media. However when I added two other user accounts to my iMac (OS X 10.6.4) I can not get either user account to attach themselves to the iTunes library. I have changed the prefs and to tell it the collection is on the Time Capsule, and yes it is connecting with the username and password saved.
Any ideas on remedying this will be very welcome
    Many Thanks

  • Sharing media across user accounts on the same iMac

My partner and use the same iMac but we have to different user logins. We are often at the same events and like to use the clips, photos or footage taken by the other in our iMovie projects. Is there an easy way to access those media files while working in iMovie?
We both set our movie and photo folders to allow sharing but this doesn't seem to allow access when we try to import footage from one of those folders.
Of course we could always drag and drop files to the Public folder but that seems like a way to loose files or become very unorganized.

    Hello everyone
I would be interested in doing the same thing: let iMovie 8 store its media in the shared drive. Like that my wife and I (with two different logins) would have access to the same media and events.
As iMovie 8 doesn't let me chose where to store my media, I have copied the folder iMovie Events and iMove Project into the shared folder, then making aliases which I put in the account's place where the original folders were. Doesn't seem to work.
    Any other suggestions?

  • ITunes does not launch with new User Account (Vista)

One of my limited user accounts on Windows Vista because corrupt, so I created a new limited User Account and copied ALL of the files from the old to new.
Now, when I try to launch itunes on the new user account, it will not open at all. Itunes works on my administrative account, with no problem.
Can someone tell me the most pain-free way to resolve this issue. And, whatever solution, will I be at risk of losing my itunes libraries?
    Thank you in advance.

Hiya. Delayed again. Browsers being cranky. (I blame the aftershocks.)
It's actually plausible that it was installed in there (by doing a run as administrator on the installer itunes64setup.exe, perhaps). Because that suggests a possible cause for these continual permissions-related problems.
A lot of what you're seeing is consistent with damaged ACLs (access control lists) on files, folders and registry keys. Although it's a lot rarer than it used to be, one of the ways you could get borked ACLs was if a program (like iTunes or QuickTime) was installed in one user account, and then the user account it had been installed in was deleted (or otherwise rendered unusable).
We don't know which particular permissions are stuffed up here. But there's a shotgun approach to fixing them which used to work okay, although it's a bit fiddlier to do on a 64-bit system than a 32-bit system.
I'd strongly recommend setting up a system restore point prior to doing this, so you can revert if things turn to custard.
The basic technique you follow is from the following blog entry *with one important modification.*
[Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to repair file and registry permissions|http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/solving-setup-e rrors-by-using-the-subinacl-tool-to-repair-file-and-registry-permissions.aspx]
The modification is that when you're editing the file to replace YOURUSERNAME with the name of the account, edit the first line so that %ProgramFiles% instead says %ProgramFiles(x86)% and after the line that reads:
    *subinacl /subdirectories %programfiles%\ /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f /grant=users=e >> %temp%\subinacl_output.txt*
    ... add another line saying:
    *subinacl /subdirectories %programfiles(x86)%\ /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f /grant=users=e >> %temp%\subinacl_output.txt*
(The first is to make sure the commands see the subinacl, because it installs in \Program Files (x86)\ on 64-bit systems, and the second alteration is to make sure that the permissions for the 32-bit program files are fixed too.
After doing that (it'll take a while to run), can itunes launch normally in the new account?

  • Can't get a downloaded menu bar to show up in a Window's user account instance of Firefox other than the administrator account

In Windowx XP, one can create seperate user accounts or "profiles" so that different people can use a computer and have their files and profiles kept seperate or secured from others. The main account is the Administrator account.
My problem is I have non-Firefox toolbars that I have downloaded and installed on the Administrators account Firefox toolbar, but I can not get these to show up in any of the seperate user accounts that I have created.
Is there a way to make these show up? If so, what do I need to do?
    Thank you,
    Blaine Thompson

Toolbar extensions are installed to the user account / Profile, they're not installed globally. You need to install them separately to each user account / Profile.
If you know your way around in the Windows Explorer file system, you can drop an extension into the program files Firefox\extensions\ folder and the extension will be installed globally - as each Profile is launched. Right-click the installation button for extensions an use Save Link As... to save the extension to local disk.

  • My wife and I have separate user accounts but want to share our Photos libraries or merge them as one.  How do I do this?

My wife and I just bought an MBP (mid-2014 version) with Retina display and have separate user accounts with Admin. privileges.
We want to share our Photos libraries or merge them as one.  How do we do this?  IS it better to just have one account instead?

iTunes- How to share music between different user accounts on a single computer
You cannot merge two separate libraries across user accounts. Photos does not have the function of merging different Photos.library files. If you have Aperture then you can merge the two before migrating over to Photos.

  • What exactly happens to my apps and settings when i create a new user account, and delete all the other user accounts?

Such apps and settings that apply to icloud, appstore, and itunes. I know the apps will still be in the new account and any other purchased apps will be in the appstore for re-download. But what will happen I delete user accounts and choose not to save any folders or files of the soon to be deleted user accound? I don't have a disk to do a clean install and I'm trying to give my super old macbook pro to a friend and I want to make sure the laptop is his and everything of mine is gone. Will erasing free space do that trick?

If it is not installed in HD>Applications folder and installed in a user account then it's gone with the user account. It's that simple.

  • Installing a new user in OS 10.5.8

I have a G5 running OS10.5.8 that im trying to install a new user account on. I have done this in the past. I am an administrator and have the only account the machine. I do not want to erase and start over by re-installing everything again. Everytime I set up a new user account, either as an administror, regular or as managed I get the same thing when going into iTunes. I do not have privlages to access that folder. Hence everytime I set up the new user and go to iTunes it askes for where the iTunes folder is and will not let me start it because I do not have access privaledges.
I have been a Mac user for many, many years and have never seen this. I do not want to re-install my operation system to sovle this. What is the work around to getting a new user on the mac with regular access? HELP!!!

OK, so after testing it out I can change the user account to what I want, however, everytime that I log in and then go to iTunes it's as if I'm opening it for the first time. Sounds like more of the sharing restrictions but where do I start to solve this?

  • Movie wont play in another user account

Hi ... why would a movie play fine in my account but not in my wifes ...message "Cannot open this file" or something ... any thoughts please .... best Roger

Thanks quicktimekirk ... well yes it makes sense but ... so i download a QT movie ... do I then need to find out what codec was used ... and how do i do that please ... and then i guess if it plays in my account I can assume that my account has the codec ... then I have to find that codec and copy it into every other user account ... so to take it to an extreme if there are several dozen possible codecs and several dozen different user accounts I could spend my life copying and pasting codecs ... this seems nonsense .... why isn't it possible for the fundamental bits be installed in all user accounts by default and if that's NOT what you want tick a box to exclude some users ... but if that's the way it is something must be wrong. It can't be that difficult. I'm in the broadcast design business and I downloaded someones "Showreel" ... another account can't watch this movie ?.... wierd ! Thanks as ever for your time though .... regards Roger
