Installing QuickTime Standalone error  aaargh!

I just got a Ipod Nano, but I can't use it because I can't get ITunes to work. I've been reading up on this board for a couple of hours and trying the suggestions but I haven't gotten anything to work. Basically at the beginning I got teh -3 error alot of other posters have been getting. But after screwing around with my computer I might've accidentally made things worse.
I think the base of the problem, like many other users, is getting quicktime to install properly. After I played around with the computer now I get two different messages that pop up during the installation process for the Quicktime standalone installation. The first is " Error 1402.Could not open key: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Quicktime. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact you support personnel."
The second error message is "Error:-1603 Fatal Error during installation."
I also tried using the windows install cleanup, but I cant because QuickTime isn't listed on the add/remove program list in the control program.
I would really appreciate any help at all. Thank you.

  • Problems installing QT standalone (errors 1721/1603)

Yeah, the title pretty much sums it up. I try to install QT standalone 7.0.3.50 and as it nears the end of the install it gives me:
"Error 1721: There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
    followed by
"Error 1603: Fatal error during installation. Consult Windows Installer Help (msi.chm)or MSDN for more information."
I've tried just about everything. Does anyone have any suggestions? Alternatively, does anyone know where I could dl an earlier version of QT, pehaps QT 6, which I had installed (and working just fine) on my computer prior to foolishly pursuing an update.

Error 1721 is a generic Windows Installer problem.
There's two ways to fix this, one of which should work. First, try the steps listed here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;891985
If that doesn't help, use the program here to remove anything related to quicktime from the installer system: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301

  • How to install Quicktime after error -3

If you’re trying to install iTunes on Windows and it dies during the Quicktime installation with a “-3″ error, the way to fix it is to:
    1. Open regedit
    2. Navigate to HKEYCLASSESROOT –> Installer and select Products
    3. Use the Find menu to find quicktime inside that part of the key
    4. Delete the part of the tree (key) that you find
    5. You should now be able to install Quicktime and iTunes without incident

I also stumbled across this fix for the error -3 msg which works using Windows 2000 SP4.

let's try enlisting some additional technical help with this one.
let's try getting a installer log to someone who can interpret installer logs.
Start menu -> Run... In the text field of the dialog that comes up, type in "cmd" and hit return.
In the command prompt dialog that comes up, find the iTunes installer on your desktop and drag it to this window. Then on the same line type in a space and then the following:
    /Verbose"c:\log.txt" /V"ENABLE_QTLOGGING=TRUE"
There is no space between the e in Verbose and the double quote ("). There is no space between the V"Enable...
    Hit return.
The installer will create two log files:
    C:\log.txt and C:\qt.log
Find those files and send them to this email address Put the URL to this discussion thread into the email, so that the person who gets it has some context. Let them know the version of itunes you’re trying to install, too … in general, give as much info as you can.

  • Error message I receive when trying to install Quicktime 7.3...

I keep receiving this error message when trying to install Quicktime 7.3. I have removed anything Apple or QuickTime from Add/Remove, but at the end of the installation I keep getting this error mesage:
"The older version of QuickTime could not be removed. Contact your technical support group".
I have no clue what to do to resolve the issue and the software is paid for and has been useless for months due to this error. I'm completely out of ideas. Can someone please help me? I have called tech support but after about 7 hours of help and escalations and everything elser, Apple can't even fix it. The unit is clean, COMPLETELY!
Thank you in advance for any help I am given.
    Cheers

+BTW, while on the phone with tech support, I used the MS tool "Windows Install Cleanup", which I'm sure deals with the MSI stuff.+
Yeah, that's usually most helpful (immediately) when you get your message in conjunction with a missing QuickTime.msi message. The "standalone" version of your message tends to be a bit trickier to deal with.
Lets head back into Windows CleanUp one more time, to check on a possibility.
Launch CleanUp ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). Are there any mysterious blank lines (or lines containing just a version number, but not mentioning a name of any program) showing up in the list of programs in CleanUp?

  • Can't Uninstall/Install Quicktime error number: 0x80040707

I am also having probelms with quicktime. I went to uninstall/reinstall it and have had no luck. When I run the uninstall shield, it starts and then before it goes farther than half way loaded it disappears.

Also, I tried to install the standalone 7.0.4, it installs and then before it completes, when I click finish is comes up with this error:

    Setup will now terminate
I can't do anything with quicktime: run updates or use the plugins: nothing comes up or it restarts my firefox. What do I do? Really appreciate any help, I'm useless technologically. Thanks

  • Error when installing Quicktime 7.1.3

I'm having trouble updating my iTunes/QuickTime to the newest version. The error I get is:
    Could not open key:
HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel. I should have access to anything, there are two local admin accounts and I have a domain admin account on the domain that the computer belongs to.
I have since successfully uninstalled iTunes. I uninstalled QuickTime and got the same error, with a few others registry related, but it continued and said it finished uninstalling successfully.
Now I try to install the standalone QuickTime 7.1.3 and get the same error and it rolls back the installation. I found a bunch of QuickTime related keys in HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes but if I even click on them I get an error: Cannot open "whatever key": Error while opening key.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, or should I just re-install the OS?

I'm having the same problem, but so far, none of the solutions I've seen on other threads have worked. I've made sure that I have permissions on everything, but the registry still won't give me access. I'm starting to think that my registry (or at least any keys associated to QuickTime*) might be corrupted.
By the way BDude004, in any earlier versions of iTunes, did you have any errors pop up, talking about errors changing filetypes? that happened to me often, and I'm wondering if it was a precursor to this registry problem.
    * I say this because I get the same "Cannot open QuickTime.[some QT associated filetype]: Error while opening key." message whenever I click on that key in the registry editor.

  • Error Installing Quicktime

I had quicktime on my computer, then I had to use it one time, so I tried opening it, but nothing happened, as though I didn't click it. So I completely uninstalled it and tried reinstalling iTunes+Quicktime but I get, right at the end of installing Quicktime, QuickTime installation failed: Error Code: -1
And then it promptly closes. I also cannot use my iTunes since I don't have quicktime installed.

    hi Elpram!
i don't much like the sound of the "error-less" launch failure that you got with Quicktime initially. what we're going to do is first try to treat the -1. our initial objective is to get itunes and quicktime to the stage (at least) that they fail to launch, but don't give you an error message. once we've got things to that stage, we'll start addressing the error-less launch failures.
the -1 (like the -3) indicates an underlying problem with the QT component of the itunes installer bundle. so first we're going to try a "semi-diagnostic" careful standalone QT install. (even if you get an error message on this install, the additional information will be helpful when it comes to trying to address the underlying problem.)
download and save a copy of the standalone QT 7.0.3 installer to your hard-drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than on line.) switch off any antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.0.3 Standalone Installer
if you get an error message during that install, let us know what it says. (include error message numbers if you're getting any.)
if the install goes through, let us know if (at least) you've gotten things to the stage where itunes and quicktime don't give you an error message when you try to launch them.
    love, b

  • Error message when trying to install Quicktime 7.2

When I try to install Quicktime 7.2 on my MacBook Pro, I get a message saying that there was an error and I need to try again. When I have tried via Software Update, it says it has moved the download to the trash. I am running OS 10.4.10. If it is an additional clue, I also tried downloading and installing Onyx and ran into a similar problem.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You are trying to update to OS X 10.8.2 using the conventional update package for other Macs.
You have a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, and it needs a special 10.8.2 version. To install it, open  > Software Update and install all the available updates

I recieve the following error message when trying to install Quicktime for Windows "Error writing to file C:/Program Files/QuickTime/QTSystems/QuickTimeCheck.ocx. Verify that you have access to that directory."  I just trying to get the latest version of iTunes.  Thanks

"Error writing to file C:/Program Files/QuickTime/QTSystems/QuickTimeCheck.ocx. Verify that you have access to that directory."
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • Error 46 when installing QuickTime

Every time I try to install Quicktime I get error 46 cannot find or load Quicktime ActiveX control. I have tried every variation of relaoding iTunes and Quicktime, Stand alone version together nothing seems to work. My iTunes loads fine and I can play all my music on my PC but it won't recognize my new iPod Nano. I followed instructions for troubleshooting the message about not finding my iPod service and nothing works. been at this for 2 days now PLEASE HELP ME

I am guessing this is a Windows Installer error, you can look up the number here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa372835%28VS.85%29.aspx
I don't think it is much help though.
If you don't mind removing your old Quicktime - and therefore not having Quicktime at all if this doesn't work, try the following.
Download the version of Quicktime that does not include iTunes from here:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program. The installer doesn't give any message to confirm the installation.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
(To run the program – All Programs>>Windows Install)
Now use the following method to remove Quicktime:
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
I know that the uninstall won't work, but delete the files and folders as directed in the method.
Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)
Remove any references you find to Quicktime.
If you don’t see an entry for Quicktime, look out for blank entries or numeric entries that look like version numbers i.e. 7.x for Quicktime.
    restart your PC
Install the stand alone Quicktime and cross fingers..

I have manually edited the Regedit permissions to include all, restarted the computer, and tried again... get the same Error message. I have also uninstalled both iTunes and QuickTime first, and used a Windows Cleanup utility.

If you go to Start>Settings>Control Panel and open the User Accounts control panel. Does the account name that is being used to log onto the computer, appear in there as a Computer administrator? Also if you right click on CLSID go to Permissions>Advanced>Owner, is this account name showing up in there?

  • Error installing Quicktime (Code: -3)

Any and every time I try to reinstall Quicktime/iTunes I receive an error pop-up during installation (Quicktime installation failed: Error Code: -3).
I never had these issues until I upgraded iTunes from 4.9 to 5, and uninstallation and restalling has done nothing.
