Installing Quicktime without iTunes

Is there any way to install Quicktime without iTunes. I have an older laptop and I just don't need iTunes there as it's on my desktop.
There is a link on the Apple site which points to a 20 MB dowload (information below) but the download link still takes me to the "norman" QuickTime and iTunes download page.
Very frustrating - would appreciate any help I can get.
Thanks,
ed

  • How to install Quicktime WITHOUT iTunes?

It seems that there isn't a Quicktime installation kit, just an "iTunes with Quicktime" kit. That can't be right. I don't want to install Apple bloatware that I'm never going to use and would just uninstall right away just to get a simple video player.
Seriously, iTunes includes DRM (Digital Restrictions Software) of the sort that you often can never get off of your system without crippling it in some way.
All I want to do is watch movie previews. I shouldn't have to install 35 MB of software (compressed) just to watch movie previews.
So please, tell me how to install just Quicktime, or tell me about a Quicktime 7 compatible media player I can use as an alternative.
    Tony
P.S. Why are so many movie previews available only in Quicktime format? Does Apple pay the studios to get a monopoly in this area or what? You can usually can get around this by going to Canadian sites, for example the US site for Imagine Me and You has only a Quicktime format preview, but you can go to a Canadian site, http://www.icinema.ca/movie.php?movieID=51628, and they have the preview in Windows Media and Real formats ONLY (Quicktime isn’t even available). But that's an inconvenience. Why can’t we get to choose our media format in the US?

Thanks for the link. That's exactly what I was looking for.
I went back to the "Quicktime Download" tab and I still can't see a link to the /standalone page. It must be hidden somewhere, but Real does the same sort of bait-and-switch thing, except they are trying to trick you into paying for their product, which is even worse.
Also I apologize for the attitude. Just kind of frustrated, having spent too much time trying to solve this very minor problem.

  • Quicktime without iTunes?

How do I install QuickTime WITHOUT the iTunes crap?

    hi beckfield!
it's possible to give feedback like that directly to the Apple folks (we're a user to user troubleshooting forum). these would probably be the best forms to use for a suggestion like that:

  • Startup Problems after Installing QuickTime and ITunes 7.5 Update

I went to Software Update today and Installed the new ITunes 7.5 and Quicktime update and after it finished, it asked me to restart the computer. After I restarted:
-All Desktop icons keep flashing at the same time every 3 seconds
-The top white bar with the apple logo in the left corner keeps disappearing and reappearing at the same time as the icons do.
-Every program I open closes within 5 seconds of me opening it, i am only able to open them in the first place because my dock is the only thing that does not disappear.
-Finder and System Preferences are not accessible.
I do not have the System Restore/Tiger backup CD's with me, If these are needed, is there any way possible to use the ones that come with an Intel MacBook, just to maybe repair the hard drive or whatever may be needed to be done?

    Hello,
If you mean ... is it ok to use system restore disks that came with an Intel MacBook on an iBook G4, no, that's not possible. Your iBookG4 is a PowerPC... the MacBook has an Intel based chip.
If you installed software such as iTunes and QT updates and these problems just started as a result it may be that your iBook drive hasn't enough available space. If you can, open any Finder window. The amount of free drive space is displayed there. 15% or less is bad. If this is indeed the case, then try to move important files off that drive.
If you can run Disk Utility.. it's in your Applications/Utilities folder. Launch Disk Utility. In the panel on the left, select MacintoshHD 10.4.x, make sure the First Aid tab is highlighted, then click Repair Disk Permissions... that might help. I'd suggest you Verify the disk for errors but you can't do that without the iBook system restore disks.
One other suggestion is to purchase either DiskWarrior available here: www.alsoft.com
or TechToolPro available here: www.micromat.com (I've used DiskWarrior successfully 3 times on my iBookG4!
I hope something I've suggested helps...

  • Getting QuickTime without iTunes?

Is there any way at all to acquire QuickTime without having to install iTunes? With earlier versions I was not forced to install iTunes with QuickTime. Furthermore, I don't know of any third party media player that plays .mov files without QT being installed on the computer, if there is such a player, please enlighten me.
    Thanks.

I also purchased an Ipod (120) but can not intstall the new Itunes upgrade it requires.
Same error code w/vista and quick time.

  • TS3772 I've installed Quicktime but Itunes still says I need to install it, what should I do?

Yeah I've installed Quicktime onto my laptop but when i go onto Itunes and try to watch a video it says I need to install Quicktime what do I do?

First could you confirm your Windows version, XP, vista,or 7.
Could you confirm that your Quicktime works OK and that you have the latest version.
If so you may have a variation of an old error we used to see.
It is most common on laptops that are used at work and connect to a work network but it can occur in other situations.
If this is the problem you will need to edit the %Path% variable, but we need to know if this is necessary first.
In order to check this, type
    cmd
into your search box and click cmd under Programs.
For XP use the Run command to open cmd.
The black cmd window will open.
Next copy&paste the following into the cmd window and press return:
    echo %path% >documents\path.txt
I think for XP it will need to be
    echo %path% >"my documents\path.txt"
Unfortunately I don't have XP to check that this is correct.
If you can't get it to work, just type:
    echo %path%
And the path will appear on screen and you will have to work from that, but it is easer if you can do it the other way.
The first way will place the contents of the %path% variable in a text file called Path in (My) Documents.
You will need to check that each folder in the list actually exists.
In order to save time you can copy&paste each folder in the list into the address bar of Windows Explorer. You will get an error if the folder doesn't exist.
Make a note of any that don't exist and post back. Most commonly the thing you are looking for is a network location.
If you are having trouble with this you can paste the text file into your next post and I can take a look at it.

  • Error when installing QuickTime for iTunes 7

"The installlation of QuickTime did not complete successfully. iTunes requires QuickTime."
That's exactly how it appears, typo and all, when I attempt to install iTunes 7.
Here are a few errors from a log file:

    MessageType: INSTALLMESSAGE_INFO
Message: Action ended 16:41:27: ISStartup. Return value 3.
    Returning: 1L
I can post the rest if it would help. I've googled for this and can't turn up anything. Any help would be appreciated.
I've also checked the InstallDriver parameters in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dcomcnfg.exe are set to the launching user.

Ok...Here's what will solve your problem for sure. I know because it worked for me.
Step 1.) If you have itunes/quicktime on your computer, uninstall quicktime using the installer that came with it. You don't need to uninstall itunes.
Step 2.) Reboot your computer and terminate/disable all antivirus/spyware shields/protection.
Step 3.) Click start, run, type regedit, and navigate to the key that was mentioned when you first tried to install/upgrade itunes and quicktime. Delete the folder the key (value) resides in, which is something like: QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp (whatever is said from the installer).
Step 4.) Close the registry editor, and install the new itunes/quicktime. You might want to download it again to start with a fresh copy.
Note: If you did as I said, it will work and quicktime/windows will not be harmed because of the registry editing.
Hope this solves this problem once and for all. Have fun!

  • Unable to install Quicktime and itunes

    Hi,
I am getting beyond despair and desperate for help on this please (I have spent hours and hours and still no further forward).
I am running XP with service pack 3 installed. Windows updates are up to date.
When iTunes 9 first came out it wanted to update but returned an error: -
"The installation of QuickTime did not complete successfully. ITunes requires QuickTime"
I therefore took the advice posted on Apples support site to download and install QuickTime separately.
Attempting the Quicktime installation first, after installing the Apple Application Support and Apple Software Update elements (I can see these in the add/remove programmes utlility) the installation crashes with the error message-
"The installer encountered errors before the required operation for QuickTime could be completed. To retry these operations at a later time, please run the installer again".
I have since followed the advice here: -
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA44469
    and here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
    - this includes all items through to and including the Additional Troubleshooting.
In addition, I have searched for and deleted all the .msi files relating to iTunes, QuickTime etc.
One thing that I could not do is to attempt an install through Safe Mode. Windows would not allow it (even though I was logged on as administrator).
Where do I go from here?
Please help -life's too short to loose 2 days getting Itune to work!

    Great catch, Diane!
Following hard drive problem a few months ago, I had reinstalled XP onto a new primary drive, labeled F. A second drive is also installed on the machine, labeled C, which had come from another computer. This also has a copy of XP in it, although it does not boot from this drive. In this case however, the path for the msiexec service was pointing to the old C drive.
Crikey. I've seen documentation on that sort of thing as a possible cause of Invalid Drive installation error messages, but I don't think I've ever seen it reported before "in the flesh" (as it were). I don't think I'd have thought to check on that at all with your error messages.
Glad you got things working, Diane. Many thanks for letting us know about your resolution.

  • Installing QuickTime without installing iTunes

I would like to know why Apple doesn't make a separate install for QuickTime? I do not use iTunes because I cannot put the songs on a CD for my car. My car doesn't have iTunes software on it.
    My Own   Windows XP Pro

I don't think any car comes with iTunes software. Some do come with iPod connections but the software is on the iPod not the car.
iTunes also allows you to burn Audio CD's from nearly any audio file on your computer.
They will play just fine on any CD device including your car.

  • Can't install Quicktime or Itunes

I'm having a complete difficult time with this.
I've tried to install "iTunes + Quicktime" about 20 times now.
It says Quicktime installation messed up and iTunes can't work without Quicktime and quit.
So I get the stand alone version of Quicktime and try to install that.
I get "The installer encountered errors before the requested operations for QuiicktTime could be completed" Then it tells me to retry.
I've done everything I've read. I've tried Windows Install Clean Up, but iTunes nor Quicktime is in there, the only thing that is "Apple Application Support"
I've deleted all the apple and quicktime registry entries I found, I've deleted anything reffering to either apple or quicktime.
    I've reinstalled vbscript.
    I'm out of ideas.
I've spent hours googling this now and nothings worked.
The Operating System I'm installing it on is Windows XP.
    Someone please help.

    Excellent news!
Strange how sometimes the fixit works better than the manual methods, and sometimes the manual methods work better than the fixit. It differs from Microsoft fixit to Microsoft fixit too. (Unfortunately, because these "anomalous 2738s" are pretty rare as install errors go, I don't have a good feel yet for whether or not it's the fixit or the manual method that's more likely to work in iTunes/QuickTime installation contexts.)

  • Installing quicktime and itunes

I am a newbie to this forum. I searched the forum and couldn't find the answer I was looking for so here is my question. When I try to open either iTunes or the Quicktime player I get a error message that reads "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." (it is one of those 'send error report' messages. Anyone who has windows has probably seen them before) Since it is happening with both Quicktime player and iTunes I can only assume that this is a problem with Quicktime. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling many times. Every time I try to uninstall Quicktime it tells me "a fatal error has occurred during installation" and never uninstalls. The only way I can uninstall is to just remove all the program files. Has anyone ever experienced this before? I need help.
I have done everything you have suggested in your trouble shooting article HT1926, Nothing works.

I have a laptop Aspire4520. I have the installer for QT with iTunes...because when I tried to use the other QT installer withough iTunes I got the same error message.
I am running as admin since I am the only one that uses this machine. Yes all I finally got a pc laptop...lol
The installer goes all the way through until it tries to set updating (i assume) and the error I get will not let me go further..options are to cancel then it all goes to the beginning and I have to quit.
    error:
there is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact support personnel or package vendor.
what do I do? I have already gotten rid of the temp folder that was mentioned in the docs listed for troubleshooting/ restarted and still it won't install.
Being a pc and no other apple software installed, how am i to get the apple updater that it seems to need?
