Installing RAM fixed my *very* slow Mountain Lion

I recognize this isn't really a practical "fix" for many people but I just wanted to share my experience.
Bought a new Mid-2012 15" MBP (2.3 GHz i7 with 4GB RAM) with Mountain Lion installed direct from Apple, set it up by migrating my accounts, data, etc. from an older MBP running Lion. I was very disappointed with how appallingly slow everything was, particularly when logging in, switching user accounts, and Safari. It was all just crawling crawling along. My plan all along was to upgrade the RAM anyway so I installed 8GB and now.........
My cold boot went from 80 seconds down to 48, and my user account login from the main screen went from 35 seconds down to 8! Switching accounts also is now almost instant, 1-2 seconds as opposed to a grey screen as it transitioned for anywhere from 15-20 seconds previously.Safari is also now zipping along.
I don't know if something else resets or updates when you add RAM, or if all the difference can just be attributed to the additional RAM, but the difference has been HUGE! Much much more than I was expecting. I also don't know how much of my problem was related to migrating my data with all its possible conflicts and left over bits and pieces from 3+ years of use.

I'm using a 2.97GHz i7 with 8GB RAM and the problem still exists. Its a shame really, I've been using windows via bootcamp for months and was just starting to like OSX again....

Hard drive packed up, but had Time Machine backup. I installed new ssd and upgraded to Mountain Lion, but I can't find iPhoto library and photos or iTunes songs? Is there an answer to this?  A backup run did not install either photos or songs. Graham

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select

How can I fix a VERY slow App Store on My iMac 10.9.3 ?

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
If possible, connect to your router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

  • Macbook Pro 2011 running slow - mountain lion

    Hi,
Since updating to mountain lion my mbp is running very slow,
Have repaired disk permissions and ran clean my mac but no improvements.
The hard disk is less than half full and no login items up on start up.
    What more can I do?

So it's the 13" (early 2011), MC700LL/A (2.3 GHz)? You can install up to 16GB of RAM in that machine, although Apple only 'officially' endorses 8GB. I run 16GB and find that I actually use up to 13+GB at one time - but I'm able to run many memory-hungry apps concurrently with no swaps, etc.
If I were you, I'd install at least 8GB - take a look at the Crucial site and click the System Scanner. You'll be offered the recommended upgrades.
As to a clean installation of the OS - I wouldn't really worry about that at this time. It doesn't sound as if you've an OS/software problem... there's no telling why your friend's MBP (the same as yours?) seems faster.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Slow mountain lion

I got lured into making the move to Mac and purchased a MBA (250 GB; 1.8 GHZ; Core i7; 4 GB RAM) recently and upgraded it to Mountain Lion instantly.
    Result:
    Blew my savings.
    Problems:
It is dead slow as a snail. My windows 7 was a zillion times faster and never crashed. This is how slow my mac is: it takes about 2 seconds to copy and 10 seconds to paste in word. my word would just shut down claiming insufficient memory, while i would see about a half a GB just claimed by inactive memory also does not save my autor-recover files. dont know why ? tried changing the save location. I have enough memory (160 GB)
Mountain Lion takes up 800 MB - 1.25 GB of memory. it is disgusting and unjustifiable to how apple charges for all these things.
    Tried:
purged my  memory a gazillion times. it would still do the same thing.
intsalled CCleaner to make sure i do not have any trash accumulating.
I even deleted all my apps that i am not using. even garage band; messages; which were taking up a lot of space.
Turned off Dashboard - still no use.
I am currently using only 90 GB of my 250 GB hard disk and still have about half a GB of free memory. - Mac is still outrageiously slow.
ive read all i could to see where i could improve. And I do not have anymore time to sit and try to improve this stupid OS that is taking up all my memory. unworthy of my time. Apple better put some fix to this problem, otherwise their end will be sooner than they think it is, faster than microsoft's for sure.
You cant even go back to Lion / snowleopard, cuz icloud wont work in there. Plus you dont get support.
Anybody knows : how to make the MBA faster / make mountain lion consume less memory ?
My question to Apple - Why would you sell such a device, that you cant even upgrade if you knew that the OS was going to take about half your memory and another 1.8 GB for just keeping the essential Mail and Calendar Active; leaving a paltry 200 MB to do all my work for which I paid 1400.00 something ? Sometimes even when I have about 1-2 GB of free memory i would have my apps crash and burn. why would you do this ?
    <Edited By Host>

macjack, please dont take this personal... who in here is talking about apple losing my business and how that will make a difference to you ? clearly you are not reading properly or you are one of the blind bandwagoner for Apple...
To clarify, i was not talking about losing my business... (which is water under the bridge, cuz i should be crazy to waste my time on finding solutions, while the Apple support does jack... ) I was talking about  my experience with apple.. so other folks out there who are thinking about making the jump from windows are better informed...
and yeah, thanks for your useless comment, cuz Lion as you say is worse off than ML... and all you have is, clean install it ? my answer to you: been there done that... no use, whats your point ? and if you think i am one of those noobs, i have used the Lion for a year at office before making this jump... The only good thing that got me in is the portability and display... i did not think ML would consume upto 1 GB of memory... i have also tried repairing my disk and repairing disk permissions... Still slow...
so please macjack read well and dont judge.. Btw, could you enlighten us, as to how much is your Wired memory currently ? hat would enlighten me and others about how sluggish this OS can get.. actually, nevermind... pointless to ask a neutral opinion from a bandwagoner...

  • How much RAM is recommended to run mountain lion?

    i have a 15in MBP (2008), 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, OS 10.8.4, 791GB free space.
i'm getting a lot of beach balls, particularly in chrome and photoshop, forcing a lot of quitting/restarting. i see a lot of people at 8GB, but wanted to check first to make sure i'm not throwing money away. the economic reality of my life is that a new MBP will likely never happen.

I don't see a 2008 MBP with 2.2 Ghz, (only 2.4 Ghz or better) the Late 2007 meets your spec's of 2.2GHz, so perhaps you have a MacBook Pro 3,1 instead of a MacBook Pro 4,1.
The MacBook Pro 3,1 (Late 2007) was sold into Febuary 2008, so perhaps you didn't purchase what you expected.
You can find out, do a Apple menu > About This Mac > More information for a model identifier.
People recommend 4GB for the Lions, despite the 2GB Apple says it minimal needs.
However if your running bloatedware Chrome and Photoshop, you certainly could use more RAM.
The Late 2007 (3,1) it's possible to swtich out one of the 2GB's and put a 4GB module in, so you have 6GB total, same with the 4,1 and the Late 2008 (5,1) can hold 8GB. (2 x 4GB)
Until I know your model identifier I won't know for sure what to recommend.
Your problem isn't 100% RAM amount but it's slow speed, your older Intel Core 2 Duo + Mountain Lion bloatness + newer program bloatness.
It also could be you have been moving the computer around while the hard drive is spining, this causes the platters to become damaged and the sectors harder to read from which causes the beachballing to occur as well.
This can be fixed, but it will require you copying off all your data to a external storage drive (do not use TimeMachine or clones to restore here), the booting into RecoveryHD and using Disk Utiltiy to 3x overwrite erase your MacintoshHD parttition (takes a long time to finish) then reinstalling OS X, your programs from original sources and then finally your files from backup.
    Reset your Mac
If you had any software issues, those obviously would be resolved also, unless you installed programs that were not ideal or compatible, like third party anti-virus (unneded) or the trashware called Mackeeper (avoid!)
If you go this route, take your time installing software until you see a performance issue, then that's likely a problem.
Chrome is bloatware attempting to use the browser to do everything, spawning a zillion seperate processes for each tab and eating memory like candy, avoid it and use the much faster Firefox instead.
Photoshop you can't help, but what you can do is allow it to have as much RAM as possible by not running other programs at the same time. The ability of the Lions to restart programs/windows from the last session should be avoided.
    Why is my computer slow?

  • I'm struggling to install Logic Pro 9 upgrade on Mountain Lion

Way back we bought one of the last pre-Intel G5 in order to do music processing. We also bought Logic Studio v6 or 7. Then we upgraded to Logic Studio 8 and later decided to use a macbook pro instead of the G5. So far so good. We then upgraded to Logic Pro 9 and can run this on Lion on the Macbook Pro.
My partner is now working away and takes his Macbook with him, so we want to set-up Logic 9 on my macbook pro which is running Mountain Lion 10.8.4. Once this is done we will take it off his machine, so not pirating in any way.
I have managed (at great length) to install Logic Studio 8 on my machine using Pacifist, and I can open it and create projects etc... I now want to install Logic Pro 9 on this machine but I get a message saying that a qualifying copy of Logic or MainStage was not found on the disk. To complicate matters, we can't find either the logic pro 9 disk or an image copy, so I downloaded from the following link:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2972851/logic-downloads-fixed.html
which I found in this thread:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4948612
I have already spent many many hours fiddling with this, does anyone know how I can get around this problem?

Im using LPX and have found it to work well.... and no less stable than LP9 in terms of general stability. There are some bugs but given we are still in the early stages of development, that is not surprising and is no different to how it was with LP8 and 9 in their early days. I should add I haven't come across any "showstopper" bugs that affect my own personalo workflow and method of using Logic... just a few niggles and minor annoyances... that for the most part can be worked around if they haven't already been fixed in the 3 updates that have come out since initial release.
I have had no real issues with importing LP9 projects into LPX other than of course, the lack of 32bit Plugin support in LPX which means LP9 projects that contain 32bit plugins.. will not fully import into LPX. The midi/audio data imports ok.. the 32bit plugins will be missing however... if you don't have equivilant 64bit versions installed. For me, this issue has been very minimal simply because almsot all the plugins i use, have already been updated to 64bit versions over the last few years.
There has also been an issue with certain parameters in the track/region Inspector after import into LPX, containing weird values.. I have only had this issue once out of maybe 40+ LP9 Projects and in this one case i simply reset the values and all was well. Other users have reported different levels of how often this occurs.
Note: Once a project has been opened and then resaved in LPX the LPX version cannot be opened in LP9 as project compatibility is only backwards and not forwards.
If you cannot find your disk and serial..(which you will also need)  Contact Apple as they may be able to provide you with replacements disks if they have any left. Bear in mind if, as it appears, your LP9 is an upgrade from LP8 you will also need your previous LP8 serial as well as your upgrade LP9 serial to properly install Logic on a new Mac. Once installed you can and in fact must... then update LP9 to 9.1.8 via software updates in LIon or Mountain LIon... for Logic to under those OS versions.

  • Applications Opening Slow - Mountain Lion

    Hi,
I recently upgraded my "27 iMac to Mountain Lion, and ever since, the applications have been opening up very slowly. It takes almost 15 seconds to open up Safari and such.
    Help?
    Thanks.

Hey, I went from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion the other day.  At first, I was noticing a lot of slowing performance (opening apps, Safari, start-up time, etc).  However, after using it for a few days, I'm noticing that it's picking up speed back to normal.  I also have a 27" iMac, mid-2010 version (3.2GHz i3).  Hopefully it does the same for you. I read somewhere that it takes the system time to get acclaimated to the new software. Also, I noticed there was a software update after I installed.  Was pretty fast download/install, and like I said, things seem to be running a lot smoother now. Good luck!

  • Very Slow Internet Lion (This one is for the "Apple Network Team")

    hello,
    i'm joão from Portugal, Europe.
a couple of weekends ago i've updated three macs to Lion.
    2009 MacMini, 2007 White Macbook, 2010 iMac 21".
    problems? only with the iMac.
no connection drops but slow slow slow very slow internet. wired, speedtest marked 15Mbps download. wireless? 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 3Mbps, very unstable.
with Snow Leopard everything was ok.
tried every solution from every site and finally got it working flawlessly.
tried clean install instead of update.
    tried new dns servers.
    tried disabling ipv6.
tried remove wifi interface then add it again.
    tried service order.
tried PRAM, NVRAM, SMC, you name it, reset.
    tried removing preferences folder.
tried different browsers -> same symptoms.
    tried disable/enable airport.
    tried 10.7.1, 10.7.2, combo, delta.
    tried router's firmware update.
tried putting the computer closer to the router.
tried resetting the router, factory defaults.
    tried changing router's channel.
    tried disabling router's firewall.
tried watch router's event log, nothing suspicious.
    tried disabling router's wep password.
tried pinging a site for a couple of minutes, 2% packet loss.
tried hundreds of pages and forums...
during this attempts, macmini and macbook showed very good wireless internet speed.
iMac? slow, slow, slow, slow, slow, like seeing gmail's loading screen for more than one minute...
    again and again speedtest 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 1Mbps, 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 3Mbps.
discovered the pingtest utility in the same site and iMac's ping was grade C, grade F, grade D, with big values...mac mini and macbook were alwas grade B, with low pings (imagine 25ms on them vs. 138ms on the iMac).
i was fed up with the situation, every week tried and failed. iMac's owner was wanting to get his Lion money back and stick to Snow Leopard again. imagine recent Windows switchers thinking they went back to the same situations....
but then i found this website. and then realised macbook and macmini's wi-fi were both powered by a broadcom chipset. iMac's was powered by an Atheros chipset! did what the guy says on that site (replaced Lion's Atheros kernel driver by the one on Slow Leopard), and now everything is perfect, like on Snow Leopard. very good speed.
what a relief. thank you sir.
    hope it can help you.
hope it reachs apple's network developers...this is not good, you can't fail on something so simple and essential as decent wifi quality...

    humm...
i've clean installed one macbook (late 2008?) and one mac mini (early 2009) both with broadcom adapters and both of them were ok, after the install.
so, speedtest and pingtest are websites (speedtest.net and pingtest.net), both test your internet connection with the help of a 'local' server. it's useful, for instance, if you want see if two different computers connected to the same router have the same connection quality.
so if you can connect to some routers nicely and you have problems with your router, to me, it seems like you have some problems with the connection between your computer and the router.
an old router might bring you problems (there are some advices on the internet to change router's channel and so...), i would recommend to see if motorola has some sort of firmware update to your router. if you don't have complex router configurations, you might try to reset to factory defaults (search the manual). that, once, fixed a problem with a smc router and two macbooks (one, older, could connect easily, the other wouldn't connect to the router).
if that atheros driver trick, resolved your issue, that's strange
make sure broadcom isn't your ethernet adapter and not your wireless adapter
did you resetted your pram and smc? do you  have Mac OS 10.7.2?
i hope you can figure that out.

  • Aperture 3 very slow on lion

running on my macbook pro 2.66 ghz core 2 duo with 4 MB of ram, aperture 3 was lightning-fast in snow leopard, now is mud-slow in lion. as in *unbelievably* slow. is a fix coming?
    f

I had taken the route, over time, of installing Lipn, ontop of SL, ontop of Leopard -- after the upgrade to Lion, Aperture became painfully sluggish. After scouring user forums and a lot of Google searching, I found the one suggestion where you delete cache from a couple directores and a .plist from Aperture. No real difference.
Finally, after, what I would assume to be frustration and morbid curiosity, I used Onyx's automation clean up tools (checked everything but reindex Spotlight), and went the route of trashing my preferences. Full contents.
Long story short, Aperture is in the process of importing and processing about 59k photos and remaining much much more responsive. Instead of taking 36 hrs to complete like before, it's on track to complete everything in about 6.
Lion, as a whole, also seems snappier.
We'll see what happens when Aperture completes processing, but I am a lot more optimistic. I suppose should THAT fail, i'll go the clean-install route.
But, yeah, installing OS ontop of OS ontop of OS is never a good idea, no matter what anyone says -- you wind up with some cross tangled schmutz...
    13" MBP, 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, summer 2010.

  • Fixed Assets Very Slow

    Hi All,
Our client is running SBO 2007A and has Fixed Assets installed.
I can connect remotely to the server and the speed is absolutely fine for Fixed Assets.  This is using the administrator network logon and the SBO manager logon.
When the customer logs on locally on the server (using the administrator and manager logons for the test) the speed for Fixed Assets is very slow.
When the customer logs on to their local pc and their own network and SBO logons the speed is also very slow for Fixed Assets.
I have already uninstalled and reinstalled Fixed Assets, deleting AddOnsLocalRegistration.sbo at the same time.
Can anybody offer any suggestions why a remote connection would be fine while a local connection is so slow?
    Thanks and regards,
    Julie

    Hi.
Thanks for the links, but I don't feel like I'm any further forward on this one.
I've already reinstalled Fixed Assets but still have the problem.  The Event Viewer doesn't seem to be reporting anything relating to FA.
Why would the speed be okay when I am remotely connected, but terrible when the users connect directly to the server (or from their own pc)?
    Thanks,
    Julie
