Installing (ripping) iPhoto from Tiger

Is it possible to install iPhoto from the Tiger Upgrade DVD? I removed iPhoto and now I need to re-install it. I don't want to waster $79.00 for iLife programs I won't use.

John,
Just to clarify the other reply you got to your question.....
iLife applications are shipped from Apple in one of two ways: (1) Pre-loaded on certain new computers, and (2) Purchased for $79 from Apple
iLife applications are not part of any operating system, such as Tiger. Therefore, you won't find them on your Tiger upgrade disk.
It appears to me you have one of two choices if you truly need iPhoto again:
(1) Run the software restore program as directed by the other reply. Note: This option will load whatever version of iPhoto that shipped with your computer; if your computer shipped with iPhoto 4, that's what will be installed. iPhoto 4 cannot be updated to iPhoto 5.
(2) Pony up the $79 for iLife 05. You may want to wait until after Apple announces new products on January 10th.
I hope the above helps.
Mike

It is possible. Install the bundled appplications but select the Custom install and untick everything but iPhoto. I would suggest you double-check before pressing "Continue".

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3 freezing from Archive Install of Leopard from Tiger

Just archived and installed Leopard from Tiger 10.4.10 and on all our Macs, but our only PPC system is having serious issues. The system boots up fine, faster than before, however the Finder and desktop freeze when booting into any of the two user accounts. Applications run from the dock, but the Menu Bar isn't loading fully (airport, bluetooth, clock, etc don't load). I have run Activity Monitor from the Dock and systemuiserver and finder both freeze. I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM, and in the one instance I was able to get into the files I deleted the systemuiserver and powermanagement plist's.
Upon many hours of research with Apple and at home, nothing seems to be the solution. If I can't resolve this I may have to install a copy of Tiger (or Leopard) on an external HDD, boot and attempt data recovery from the main HDD (if nothing is locked) as a lot of Quicken 2007 files are needed and perform a clean install. If any one is able to give any help I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
Also, the Power Mac G5 is Dual 2.3 late 2005 model (specs: http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G5_Late2005.html ), with 1 GB RAM, ViewSonic VGA monitor, NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, Airport + Bluetooth, and wired keyboard and mouse. Thanks again!

So, would you recommend to people having this same system (as I do) to wait for installing Leopard or maybe to take some precautions?
    I would either:
    A) Wait until 10.5.1 has been released (which may address such issues)
    B) Take serious precautions. Back everything you need onto a separate HD and perform a clean install (which formats your HD), then move everything copied back into the system to ensure no data is lost and nothing corruptible is carried over into Leopard.
Performing the clean install seemed to take care of any conflicts and issues, but means more time will be spent manually backing up and reloading all personal data.
Hope this helps and good luck.

  • Best practice for preparation of install of Leopard from Tiger

Hi all, I am about to upgrade my iMac with an Archive and Install of Leopard 10.5 from Tiger 10.4.11.
I've done this dozens of times on other machines, but I never really thought about the best way to prepare for an install, I have already backed up this machine using Carbon Copy Cloner, is there anything else I should do before hitting the button?

Run the Disk Utility Repair function (or at least Verify), and also the Repair Permissions, which takes many minutes. This will help assure Integrity of your directory before you begin.
I am not sure why you are choosing to Archive and Install. An Upgrade install will be offered, and is thought to be just as effective, and can be a little more convenient in that your non-Apple Applications are not moved into the "Previous System" folder.
The absolute BEST practice would be (after you make TWO backups) to erase your Hard Drive with the Write Zeroes/Zero All Data Option. This will take many hours, but will force the drive to substitute spares blocks for any found to be defective after the Zeroing. But I must say that in the absence of error messages indicating disk trouble developing, this is incredible overkill. You asked, so I am answering the question as you asked it.

  • Installing iLife '08 from Tiger Install disk onto Lion?

One of my iMacs (Intel) originally came with Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger), and iLife '08 pre-installed.  Since then, I have upgraded to Snow Leopard, and then to Lion.  The problem I have is that when the upgrade to Snow Leopard was done I did a clean installation - the result was that I lost the use of iLife '08.  It didn't really bother me because it isn't our primary computer anymore.
Tonight I tried to install iPhoto and iMovie from the Original Mac OSX Install Disc 2, but when I click on "Installing Mac OS X and Applications" I get an error message that says "You can't open the application installing Mac OS X and Applications because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.  I have also tried right-clicking and selecting "Show Package Contents" but I haven't had any luck.
Is there any work around for this?  I'd rather not go into the App Store and pay for iLife and iMovie '11 considering I already have them as part of our newest iMac.

Unfortunately, there is no way around it; the older versions were PPC - up to and including Snow Leopard, they were supported by something called Rosetta. Apple has decided to drop support for the older architecture.
You can buy a new retail disk (not through the app store) which will include iDVD and iWeb (no longer included in the OS). I bought it because it was worth it to me to get a possibility to install and reinstall because I use iDVD a lot. The retail iLife 11 is available at the Apple store, online resellers, or ebay.

  • Installing iLife '08 from Tiger discs on a fresh install of Snow Leopard

I just had a brand new hard drive installed on my imac. I am currently installing Snow Leopard as I type this post. I purchased the $35 SL disc as I have iLife '08 on my Tiger (10.4) discs. Before I install iLife I would like to know if I have to put disc 1 before disc 2 or just disc 2? Will I be able to just do a software update check and install to bring iLife '08 up to date with the SL? I realize that it won't be iLife '09 but I am concerned about '08 being compatible with a fresh install of SL.

    Yes, check here...

Also, will the software updates (if I check and run a software update) happen for iLife '08?
    Yes, they should.

  • I can't install iOS4.1 from Tiger...

What a screw up on Apple's part... I have iTunes 9.0.2 and you need at least 9.2 to install iOS4. iTunes 9.2 requires Leopard (I'm running Tiger). And of course iTunes 10 requires Leopard as well. So people with Tiger are SOL I guess. How stupid is that?

    DCGOO wrote:
Actually, I don't think that is true.
I beg to differ. I have an iPhone 3g running 3.1.2 and I only have a mac running OSX 10.4.11. I never upgraded to 3.1.3, and that's a problem for me now because a lot of the newer apps (Netflix) only runs on 3.1.3 or greater. All this works fine on Tiger. Now that I want to upgrade to 4.1, I can't because it requires I run OSX 10.5.x. This means I need to pay $130+ for Leopard just to upgrade my stupid phone. Instead, if I upgrade to a new iPhone 4, which I was planning to do soon, I also need Leopard. What's next, only Intel macs? There are lots of people out there using PPCs and Tiger. Since it worked so far, what's so special about Leopard? The phone is the DEVICE, not the computer syncing to it. I probably will upgrade my computer, but it just makes me mad...

  • Installing apps ONLY from Tiger disc onto Leopard system

Hi- I recently installed leopard. For the sake of brevity Ill just say I didnt do an exemplory job copying my apps beforehand. That said; I was under the impression I could custom install certain apps that were on my old Tiger install disc that are not on the new Leopard disc. Is this untrue? I popped the disc in and held down C. now I seem to be trapped in Tiger install mode, and can't seem to be able to restart the computer as normal. I tried quitting the install, but then have to select a startup disc; either Tiger, or I believe 'network startup'. I tried the latter and got a blinking globe and then back to Tiger install.
    So
A: Is it possible to do the installs I mentioned? (IE, ilife type apps)
    and
B: How do I get out of the installer and back to normalcy without installing the old OS?
    Thanks for any help.

ok..I put the leopard disk back in and ran a disk repair and permissions repair with it. After that it said everything appears to be ok. I still could not get back to my computer so out of frustration I decided to just do an erase and install of leopard once again. Maybe this is a dumb thing to do? Because I did this...the install finished, the computer restarted, and then stayed stuck on the grey screen with apple logo and spinning icon for a long time, after which it went to a sort of grey blue, and after that black. No darwin, just black. What is going on? Should I just go back and do an erase and install with the Tiger that originally came with my computer? Im scared it's a hardware issue.
    Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
all caps are considered yelling and are hard to read
I assume you are talking about installing only iPhoto from the iLife disks - neither iPhoto nor iLife are available as downloads
I'm not sure if the installer offers installing only iPhoto or not, but if you can install only iPhoto you would do it using the custom install button during the install process

  • Install old iLife from 10.3 disks onto iBook w/ a clean install of Tiger?

My ibook originally came with Panther 10.3. iLife was included on the install disks.
A few months ago, I did a clean install of Tiger. I then tried to reinstall iLife from the Panther 10.3 disks. However, only Garageband and iDVD show up ---iPhoto and iMovie don't show up at all. I've searched for these programs, but they are not installed.
I spoke to an apple rep and he said that I should NEVER install old programs from a Panther disk onto a clean install of Tiger. However, the guy did not seem confident in what he told me. He said my mac should be very unstable and that I shouldn't even be able to use Garageband....but I have had no problems with my mac or using Garageband for the past 4 months.
Is he correct? And if so, should I do a clean install of Panther, and then upgrade to Tiger? I wonder if this will correctly install the whole iLife suite?

  • Best way to re set-up iPhoto on Snow Leopard from Tiger

Currently have Tiger OS and iPhoto. My iPhoto Library is on an external HDD. Also I have separate folders on the external HDD containing some .jpegs which should be in iPhoto and all my movies .avi which could be in iPhoto. I am about to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard.
What I am wondering is how I can consolidate my all my photos/movies into the new (Snow Leopard version) of iPhoto when I install. For example, in the iPhoto Library folder 2006, various .jpeg and .avi files from that year are not there - they are in a seperate folder "2006" (because I moved them using Finder when I was a Mac newbie).
Would it be better to copy all the .jpegs in the iPhoto Library into a single folder, then add all the stray photos from elsewhere in the filing system to that folder, then ask the new iPhoto to import photos from there? Or should I manually copy stray photos (eg. those from 2006) into the relevant iPhoto Library folder prior to the new installation.
Final note. I have around 50,000 photos and on my current system iPhoto is very slow to initially load up - is there a filing configuration which would make the app work more efficiently or does the SL version do that already?
    Thanks.

I am unable to open iPhoto on my Macbook Pro (OSX 10.9.3)  after installing ilife 11 from a disc.  The message I get is "you can't open the application iPhoto because it may be damaged or incomplete.  What can I do?!  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Reinstall it.This time delete the receipts first.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
    Important:
As you're on 10.9.3 you'll need to update iPhoto to v9.5 before opening it. Use Software update.
