Installing S10 on Armade M700
I am attempting to install Solaris 10 on an old Compaq Armada M700, prior to trying for 'real' on an IBM I am hunting for on eBay.
It only has 192M of RAM, but running the graphical installer is okay. However, I soon get the following msg:
/sbin/install-setup: fork failed - too many processes
Requesting System Maintanance Mode
(see /lib/svc/share/README for more information.)
Console login service(s) cannot run
Directly executing sulogin
then a # prompt...
Just wondering if this is a result of the small amount of RAM, or some other problem.
Thanks,
Hello pargoo,
I have also an old M700 with 192MB memory and an 700MHz processor. My problem is, that the notebook boots from the self-made CDs, but it stops when Solaris search the configuration. Maybe you have an hint for me?
Best regards
Africanjoe

Compaq Armada M700 & ATI Rage Mobility
Hi. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could help. I installed Solaris 8 on my Compaq Armada M700 notebook and have had endless trouble getting the display drivers to work.
Does anyone know of any available driver for the ATI RAGE Mobility-P AGP ? I have had to resort to using RedHat Linux which does have drivers for the time being ...You can go to www.xig.com ,as far as i knew , solaris doesn't support
ATI Rage Mobility-P , I have a same problem like yours , but I am using ATI Rage 128 Mobility (M3) , for more information you can go to

Hi
I have installed Solaris 8 x86 on my Compaq Armada M700 laptop. Everything works fine including video which I installed XFree86 for, except that Solaris does not see my PCMCIA controller.
Does anyone have any sugegstions ?
Best Regards / GarethDoes PCMCIA come with a Solaris driver ? I believe it needs a driver
which can recognize the pcmcia card when inserted or to talk to it.
You can look through these sites to find the hardware compatibility
list for your pcmcia card, and there are other driver related
information on these sites, which may help.

S10 will not install on FreeBSD and Linux friendly hardware
I have been utterly unable to successfully install S10 on hardware that FreeBSD and many linux flavors work on. Can someone please point me to informational resources that might help me understand what I need to do to get it working?
I posted a query last week, but the support volunteers apparently don't think my problem is worthy of attention or something.
Thanks in advance.Thanks for asking!
I can sucessfully configure and install disk1. After that, the system wants to boot from the hard drive to complete the installation.
When the HD boot is attempted, a long pause then:
Timeout on target 0 lun 0. Initiating recovery.
I have reviewed every piece of documentation that I could find regarding what could be causing this and what I could do for corrective action. My guess is that my SCSI hardware is not supported in some way, but there's woefully little information on Solaris 10 x86 hardware compatibility.
I went through all the "device adding" kludge at boot time, no affect. My system can only boot Solaris 10 from the CD media.
I sincerely appreciate your attention. I'm usually really good at self help in an open source environment. But I have no source code, so it's REALLY hard to troubleshoot this without source code. -
Cannot Install OS 8.1 on new hard drive, 233 G3 Powerbook
Ok, so here's the deal.
I have an old Powerbook G3 Wallstreet. 233 Mhz 13" screen.
I recently ran into a problem where I booted up, and the hard drive (original 2GB) was erased. Completely reinstalled, and as soon as it rebooted after the install, the hard drive was empty again. Weird.
So, I decide to reinstall OS8 on a new hard drive. I have an older 20 GB drive from a compaq Armada M700, which I had replaced with a newer 120 GB drive, so I used that in the Powerbook.
Anyway, I've tried lots of things. Fully empty nonpartitioned drive, single 8GB partition by using MacDisk in windows, multiple 8GB partions, what have you. Disk Setup does not see any hard drive I place in the powerbook. I tried both the 120 and the 20 GB.
Any suggestions? I only have a Windows machine to work with, as the G3 is my only Mac. (Well, I have a graphite iMac, but it's suffering from the screen shrinking/power down problem common to those units, so I can't really do anything with it.)ShatteredOne,
When you have installed the OS and restarted, did you get the blinking '?' alternating with a folder? If so, try resetting the PRAM to possibly correct this issue.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Will the Wallstreet boot to the MacOS 8.1 CD? If so, try Drive Setup on the 8.1 CD again after resetting the PRAM.
The original Wallstreet shipped with a special OS 8.1 CD (green label) since the retail MacOS 8.1 CD will not have the necessary Powerbook G3 enabler file.
You do not have to partition the HD, but just make sure you are have formatted as HFS Extended although HFS Standard will work. However, on a large drive like the 120GB, you will have a lot of wasted space due to the block size.
If still having problems, install the original 2GB HD > boot to the 8.1 CD > open the utilities folder on the CD > Drive Setup and select 'zero all data' when you initialize; now run the Test Disk test and see if it passes. If it fails, zero/test one more time. -
Installing Oracle 9i (version 9.0.1) on RedHat Linux 7.2
Hi All,
I've been trying to install Oracle 9i version 9.0.1 on RedHat
Linux 7.2 with kernel 2.4.7-10. This RH 7.2 is running on my
Compaq Armada M700 laptop that has 800MHz CPU and 256MB of RAM.
I have 10GB of diskspace on this laptop.
Someone in this group posted a howto on how to install Oracle 9i
on RedHat Linux 7.2 but for some reasons, Oracle Universal Installer
still hangs at 74% of the installation. Here is what I did:
1) Install RH 7.2 on the laptop. I also make sure that make, ar,
ld, nm and C for unix got installed when I installed RH 7.2.
I also verify by using the command "which make", "which ar",
"which ld" and "which nm" and they are also in the /usr/bin
directory. I also make the /tmp partition to be 800MB and
the swap file to be 500MB,
2) Modify the /etc/hosts file. This part is easy. I can ping
both the hostname, FQDN and the IP address of the laptop from
both locally and remotely (tested with SSH connection),
3) Go to blackdown.org and download jdk118_v3
4) Uncompress and put it in the /usr/local/jdk118_v3 directory,
5) Make a softlink ln -s /usr/local/jdk118_v3 /usr/local/java
6) Download and install package:
rpm -Uvh force nodeps binutils-2.10.0.18-1.i386.rpm
7) In /proc/sys/kernel/sem file, I modify the third column from 32 to 128,
8) Download and install package:
rpm -Uvh force nodeps binutils-2.11.90.0.8-9.i386.rpm
9) Download Linux9i_Disk1.cpio, Linux9i_Disk2.cpio and Linux9i_Disk1.cpio
to my laptop hard-drive,
10)Run cpio -idmv < Linux9i_Disk1.cpio (for 2 and 3 well),
11)Create a user account "oracle". This "oracle" account belongs to
group "oracle". Furthermore, I also create a directory /oracle
and change the owner and group permission to account "oracle"
12)Start the installer ( as Oracle User ) by typing ./runinstaller
13)The installer will ask you to run a started script as root ,
you may open a shell and type su then open Nautilus (
if using Gnome or File manager as super user if using KDE )
and drag the noted file to the shell screen and press enter,
after it is ended continue with the installer (done),
14)It asked to supply JDK home directory then it is /usr/local/java (done)
15)Unix group Name ( to update Oracle software ) : (I leave blank here)
16)Oracle home is : /oracle/9.0.1
/oracle/orainventory
From what the poster said, it should work; however, it did NOT work
for me. I've tried and tried but no avail. I have plenty of disk
space so I don't think space is an issue here.
Please help.

Solaris 10 8/07 Install hangs awaiting keyboard input
I have a W2100z Java Workstation that I am trying to install S10 8/07 on. When it first powers up, I get the standard bios prompts and can hit F2/F8 to customize things as I wish.
However, when I start the Solaris install from CD, after the OS installer is loaded, it first prompts for 1, 2, 3, 4, ... choices (1 being an interactive install). No amount of keyboard punching seemed to get it to make a choice. So after about 30 seconds or so, it times out and presumes interactive install.
After a bit, it loads a text-based window to let me choose a language. Just move the cursor around, select a language, and then hit F2 to continue. Unfortunately, it does not recognize any keyboard input and just sits there comatose for as long as I choose to wait.
So, perhaps I have a keyboard issue, so I swapped out a Kensington for a Dell keyboard. That didn't work so I acquired a Sun keyboard. That doesn't work either. I've also plugged the keyboard into every USB slot I could find (two on the front and 3 on the back), all to no avail.
Now, Solaris 11 from the SXDE has no problem booting and installing on this computer with all of those keyboards. Unfortunately, that is academic in that I need to run S10.
So what is the magic to getting the W2100z to boot/install Solaris 10?After much gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair, I found an BIOS upgrade for the W2100z. The keyboard now is recognized and the bits are installing.

S10 installation hang after video-selection
Hi,
when the installation probes my system, it doesn't really detect the right stuff. So, I correct the settings in kdmconfig and try them out with F2 with the result that the system 'hangs' ie, nothing happens. Reboot but this time, after setting up the video stuff I press 'F4' as for save'n'exit. Then the installation stops at 'Detecting additional network ....'
I choose 'XFree-VESA' as video driver instead of 'XFree-VESA Ati unknown board' with no luck, I've tried them both....
No matter what I say regarding my monitor, kdmconfig always say its max is 1024*768 at 56Hz interlaced :-(
What I would like to know is if it should be possible to install S10 on my machine?
Motherboard: ASUS P5AD2 Premium (i925X based)
Graphics: ABIT RadeonX700 Pro PCI-Express
Net: Marvell Yukon GBit * 2 + WiFi lan
Controller: Adaptec 29160 PCI + Serial ata drive, the adaptec drives are set as #1 & #2, the SATA as #3
I've read that APCI (?) should be disabled in the BIOS (some kind of power saving stuff), and I've tried both with it enabled and disabled. After installing, I needed to get into single user mode then run the Xfree86 configuration utility to properly detect and use the video card. I can't remember the exact command line, but it's something like /usr/X11/bin/xfconfig or something similar. After that, the video worked fine.

S10 X86 installation hangs on Toshiba Tecra M2 Laptop
Hello,
I am trying to install s10_X86 on toshiba tecra M2 laptop. But it hangs at secondary boot loader. Checked the HCl too from the bigadmin and it supports s10 3/05. I have the same media. Can any body help me install the os the laptop.
Thanks in Advance,
Regards,
RaghuI too installed s10 on a Tecra M2, and have disabled legacy USB FDD support. This enabled me to get past installation problem, but at first reboot, the system hangs at checking ufs file systems. It hangs at:
" [sytem/filesystem/autofs:default failed repeatedly (see 'svcs -x' for details) ] "
This is a dual boot system, with XP on first part of disk, and s10 installed on last 17gb of disk
Thanks...Kier -
Can't install emacs/xemacs
I apologize for appearing dense, but I can't find out hos to install S10 software that doesn't seem
to in pkg format. I have downloaded emacs and xemacs and have two directories called
SFWemacs and SFW xemacs. How do I install these?
I have not been able to find a single word of instruction dealing with anything other than the standard pkgadd command.
There are subdirectories like install and files like pkginfo and pkgmap, but no instructions and I can't get pkgadd to work because - I am forced to assume - these aren't normal packages(?) I just get error messages. I would
have thought that there might have been some installation advice in the 'install'
directory, but no such luck. What the hell am I supposed to do when I can't find simple instructions and
have spent fruitless days scouring the web for what I assume must be the most routine of operations!Don't worry about it. I figured it out.
I'd like to tell you it was a concise, helpful reply on a Sun forum, or plain and simple brain power, but
it was neither of those things. I GUESSED.
I saw posts about pkgadd and there was this mysterious '.' in some of the commands. I thought
I'd look it up in the pkgadd man page. I have years of experience with linux and unix, and was absolutely
amazed that there was nothing there explaining what the '.' was(!) Not a word.
I noticed in passing a comment about 'directory-packages' on some guy's site, but nothing approaching
an explanation about what that meant. The only time I had seen printed words talking about it it was
accompanied by a phrase like "don't use this!" in normal installation, plus something about it providing a list of all
available packages - whatever THAT meant - plus a vague hint that it had something to do with
directories.
So I reluctantly put 2 and 2 together and typed: # pkgadd -d . SFWemacs
...and viola!
Whaddya know.
Maybe Sun could be approached to place a bit of information about this on their site to save people like me
wasting hours pointlessly looking it up... -
Error: Timeout for content (ias1.0.2.2 on W2000)
I have recently installed iAS 1.0.2.2 (standard edition)
Database is 8.1.7.1.1
OS is Windows 2000
Machine is Compaq Armada M700 with 512Mb memory
The install seemed to go fine, but some of the Portal administrative portlets are displaying the message "Error: Timeout for content" (e.g. instead of the "Services" portlet). Different portlets timeout each time I refresh the page. The machine appears to be healthy. iAS and the database are the only Oracle software installed. The 81711 patch was applied after the original iAS installation in the hope of fixing the problem. Portal proxy configuration has not been changed.
I've tried a couple of changes in the zone.properties file without success e.g.
servlet.page.initArgs=stall=30
servlet.page.initArgs=requesttime=1000
Jserv.log has errors like this:

Has anyone encountered similar, or can anyone suggest a solution?
Regards, Mark
nullFuther to previous thread, I've just tried reinstalling on a clean database 8.1.7.1.1 EE (no invalid objects) as per release notes, and I'm still suffering the same "Timeout for content" in random portlets. Could it be a Windows 2000 issue (I'm running SP 1 as per release notes)? Or maybe something to do with the fact that the hostname has uppercase letters in it?
Jason suggested a proxy issue, but I haven't made any changes there - not even gone into that portlet.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
As an alternative, when will Linux 1.0.2.2 be available?

Live! Cam Voice + Windows 2000 - No video input
Hi all,
Since purchasing my Live! Cam Voice, I've always used it with a Windows XP Home machine. Recently, though, I tried to use it with a laptop running Windows 2000 Professional. The installation process encounters no problems and applications like MSN Messenger detect the cam without any difficulty. However, when *any* application attempts to view video from the camera, nothing is returned but darkness (I have lights on :-P) - it's as though it's simply not been switched on. Anyone got any ideas for dealing with this?
Mike
If anyone's interested, the laptop's spec is . . .
Model - Compaq Armada M700 (USB2 connectivity provided via PCMCIA card)
CPU - Intel P3 650Mhz
Memory - 92MB
HD - 6GB
Not sure about anymore details of the spec (graphics accelerator, etc) - I guess Googling for the model would give more details.I am having the same problem. I am using windows Vista and have tried?recording sound in other applications and it works fine, just not when trying to record in LIVE! cam. I jbought this cam 2 months ago and just now find out it does not work when I need it the most. I am due to give a video presentation in two weeks and will probably have to buy a new cam, what a dissapointment!

Hello,
could you share your experience with Solaris 8 on Compaq laptops.
I am going to buy Armada M700 - is there any problems with Solaris on it ?
What network card do you recommend to use ?
Thanks,
