Installing SATA with 3 gb/s interface in G5

I have a question regarding SATA HDs that have a 3 gb/s interface. I just bought a Samsung HD501LJ 500gb/7200 rpm/16 mb drive. I intended to install in my G5 Dual 2 ghz (PPC 970) which has a failing boot drive. I noticed when I unpacked it that it is marked as a 3 gb/s drive. Isn't the G5 equipped with a 1.5 gbps serial-ATA bus?
I have a feeling that the replacement drive MAY not be compatible with my computer. Can anyone confirm this? Is the drive backward compatible? Suggestions?

Took the plunge this afternoon. Stuck it into the B bay and rebooted. It showed up in the DistUtilities window. By all appearances I've got a good drive in the 500 gb Samsung.
There is not provision with the Samsung Spinpoint T 500 to set the jumper to 1.5 gbps mode as is provided on some other brands.
October issue of Mac/Life magazine on page 12 details problems that Western Digital in having with compatibility issues with the G5. People upgrading their G5s should take note. This is a list of six and seven drives that suffer from interface lockup the if installed in a Mac G5. Thanks for your ANSWER...I appreciate it.

  • Z77A GD-65: Windows 7 not installing/running with Intel SATA controller.

I've been having some weird issues with the Intel SATA controllers on-board. They won't let me install Windows at all. I'm using a Crucial m4 with the 0309 firmware.
When I was trying to install Windows with the SSD connected to the Intel SATA controller, installation would always fail sometime around the "Completing Installation" segment. I tried ACHI mode, IDE mode, nothing worked.
So I decided to try hooking up my SSD to the ASMedia controller instead, despite that being advised against. Windows was able to install and run fine on that connection. After that, I installed all of Intel's chipset drivers and all the updates available for Windows, hoping it would resolve the problem.
Then, I connected the SSD to the Intel port again. Now I get a BSOD every time I try to start windows, even though it has drivers for the chipset available.
I'm really upset by this... it seems like I'm going to have to settle for inferior SATA 6 performance just so I can run Windows. :(

Quote from: Warner on 24-May-12, 03:58:56
You can't install OS with ASMEDIA port, and then switch to Intel port.
So basically, if I can't get it to install on the Intel port, I'm stuck using the other one... well, the performance isn't optimal, but I guess it's acceptable as a failsafe. Better than nothing.

Try doing a new installation based on the Intel port, load Intel driver on HDD screen, and proceed.
What Intel driver do I need, and how do I load it during Windows installation?

  • Audio problems with an USB interface

Hi everyone, this is my first post and glad to finally do it.
I am so pleased with arch linux, it's just simply amazing. I have learnt a lot following the wikis, it's pretty simple and effective.
I managed to install and configure ssh server, samba server (surprisingly easy), usb samsung laser printer, nvidia drivers, KDE desktop (so fast in arch), fonts, cpu scaling and I'm so happy with the results and perfomance.
The only problem I ran into is about audio, I think the wiki on audio is pretty  incomplete (don't get me wrong I enjoy your work).
The problem is with an USB interface line 6 toneport gx (http://line6.com/toneportgx/), I know the device is meant to be an usb guitar interface but since I don't longer play guitar I use it as soundcard. As complementary information it works with no problem on Ubuntu 10.04 (which is the distro I came from).
The interface works and it's unmuted since I dmix does not work when I try to play sounds from different sources I had to install pulseaudio. Pulseaudio works partially, the sound was improved and finally I am able to play different sources. The big problem is when high cpu load ocurrs the the audio dies and does not come back even when the cpu loads decrease.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

You may want to debug pulseaudio (check their wiki to see how, involves running pulseaudio in verbose mode) to see what happens.

  • Solaris 10 u11 : Is it possible to mix IPMP with vertual network interface

    Hi
I have a system with 4 Ethernet interfaces , I'd like to try to have virtual network interface on two of them . then configure IPMP between each two.
    - Is it possible to mix IPMP and VNIC ?
    - online , I found posts about having vnic on solaris by creating additional interface file (ex, /etc/hostname.bge0:1 ) and also the IPMP create such interface?
    - How can I know which IPMP version installed on the system ? and how to know I'm reading the right configuration guide?
    - on what basis should i choose the type of IPMP for my system (Link-based or Probe-based)
    Thanks in advance
    HEBA

    Hi.
    IPMP can coexist with VNIC.
IPMP - part of Solaris. So you not need check version of IPMP. Just read Docs for Solaris.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23823_01/html/816-4554/ipmptm-1.html#scrolltoc
It's not clear what Vnic you plan use. Is it VLAN or just additional IP on interface ?
For test address of IPMP you should configure interface like bge0:1 with additional options.
    Regards.

  • Itunes COM SDK: cannot register function with iTunes Outgoing Interface

I am doing benchmarks and I want to time the encoding of a Music CD. In order to stop the "clock" and compute the time I am trying to bind a function with the _IITConvertOperationStatusEvents::OnConvertOperationCompleteEvent()
I am writing a AutoIt script and I can create the iTunes application object but when I use the ObjEvent function to register my function with the event above it causes a COM exception to be raised and the ObjEvent completes with an error. The exception code I get is 80040200 which seems to be a generic error.
    $objApp=ObjCreate("iTunes.Application")
    $SinkObject=ObjEvent($objApp, "ITEvent", "_IITConvertOperationStatusEvents")
    <<exception 80040200>>
Browsing the iTunes COM TypeLib the _IITConvertOperationStatus does not seem to be a child in the iTunes object hierarchy so I think this is way the exception is being raised. I have tried to register another function with another outgoing interface and this works just perfectly: _IiTunesEvents::OnQuitting()
Do I need to create another object which gets passed as the first parameter to the ObjEvent function?
    *Here is the entire script:*
    $ITSourceKindAudioCD = 3
    $begin = 0
    Global $trackName, $progressValue, $maxProgressValue, $SinkObject
    $oMyError = ObjEvent("AutoIt.Error","MyErrFunc") ; Install a custom error handler
    $objApp = ObjCreate("iTunes.Application")
    If @error Then
MsgBox(0, "ObjCreate", "Create Object Failed", 3)
    Exit
    EndIf
    $event = ObjEvent($objApp, "ITEvent1_", "_IiTunesEvents")
    If @error Then
MsgBox(0, "Failed", "IiTunesEvent binding failed", 5)
    Exit
    EndIf
$SinkObject = ObjEvent($objApp, "ITEvent_", "_IITConvertOperationStatusEvents") ; Assign events to UDFs starting with IEEvent_
    If @error Then
MsgBox(0, "ObjEvent binding", "ObjEvent failed!", 10)
    $objApp.Quit()
    Exit
    EndIf
    $colSources = $objApp.Sources
    $begin = TimerInit()
    For $objSource in $colSources
    If $objSource.Kind = $ITSourceKindAudioCD Then
    $strName = $objSource.Name
    $colPlaylists = $objSource.Playlists
    $objPlaylist = $colPlaylists.ItemByName($strName)
    $colTracks = $objPlaylist.Tracks
    $objApp.ConvertTracks2($colTracks)
    EndIf
    Next
    Do
; Wait around for the ripping to complete
    Until False
; This is my custom error handler
    Func MyErrFunc()
    $HexNumber = hex($oMyError.number,8)
    Msgbox(0,"","We intercepted a COM Error !" & @CRLF & _
    "Number is: " & $HexNumber & @CRLF & _
    "Windescription is: " & $oMyError.windescription )
    EndFunc
    Func ITEvent1_OnQuittingEvent()
    MsgBox(0, "Bye", "Bye-Bye", 10)
    EndFunc
    func ITEvent_OnConvertOperationCompleteEvent()
    $dif = TimerDiff($begin)
    MsgBox(0,"Time Difference",$dif)
    $objApp.Quit()
    EndFunc

much of this is speculation because I can't remember how many previous versions of iTunes were on these machines...but this is what we're seeing:
extra entries in two registry keys... when it didn't work these two registry entries contained "AppID" values:
    HKEYCLASSESROOT\CLSID\{B9E1D2CB-CCFF-4AA6-9579-D7A4754030EF}\Implemented
    Categories
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B9E1D2CB-CCFF-4AA6-9579-D7A4754030EF}
with the APpID set to the same iTunes CLSID string:
    {B9E1D2CB-CCFF-4AA6-9579-D7A4754030EF}
and when it did work the AppIDs entries were gone. this is only on XP.
on vista there never was any AppID entry.
but, again, i wonder if that was added by previous versions of iTunes which we didn't install on the vista machines...
Also, worthy of noting is this post from Apple:

  • Error BSOD when installing SATA drive on 1 & 2 (RAID 0 on 3/4 AOK)

    Hi,
I have successfully installed Win XP Pro on 3 & 4, & wanted to install a Maxtor 120GB SATA drive on 1 or 2.  When I do this, & enable bios on 1 & 2, windows loads then prompts for a reboot due to the install of new hardware.  After posting & whilst Win is starting, it BSOD with IRQ_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS etc.  I shut down computer, remove SATA drive, alter settings back to before in Bios & select last successful settings & computer reboots AOK.  This happens on both SATA 1 & 2.
Is there a way of having the SATA storage disk on 1 or 2.  Is it best to hot install it with the O/S up, after having changed BIOS settings to enable SATA 1 & 2?

To answer my own question, while computer is turned off, (after taking anti-static precautions) plug power to sata drive.
Connect sata data cable to M/board, do not connect sata data cable to drive.
Enable sata 1 & 2 in bios, boot to windows.
    Drivers are installed for device.
Then carefully plug sata data cable into sata drive.
    Windows detects new hardware.
Enter Disk Management & partition/format to your hearts content.
Thanks to those who had a look at my post.  Hope this helps someone else.

  • CS2 Scanning Problem - error with acquisition module interface

    Hi there,
I have an Epson Perfection 4180 scanner which has worked for years. I moved, plug everything back in, the scanner works one time, and from then on, I get this error: "Could not complete the Import command because of an error with acquisition module interface."
I've searched around, and seen others with this problem, but, no real solution. From what I've read, it's a Photoshop issue. I've downloaded the TWAIN drivers and re-installed the scanner, and deleted Photoshop's preferences file. The scanner does work through the Windows Scanner Wizard. I've turned off the Windows Image Acquisition thing in the control panel, and then turned it back on.
ARGH, I am really pulling my hair out. Please help!
    Thanks so much!

I'd try to avoid the hassle of messing with the PS installation if possible.
One other thing I have seen is to temporarily disable the Twain plug-in, with a ~ in front of the name, in
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins\Import-Export

  • Zone with multiple logical interfaces

    Hi,
How can multiple logical network interfaces be added to a running zone?
I have configured and installed a whole root zone with one shared-ip network interface.
Now, I need to add more logical interfaces to the same zone.
On a physical server with a bge interface, I would create a /etc/hostname file for each logical interface such as
    $ ls /etc | grep host
    hostname.bge0
    hostname.bge0:1
    hostname.bge0:2
    hostname.bge0:3
    hostname.bge0:4
    hostname.bge1
    hostname.bge1:1
    hostname.bge1:2
    hostname.bge1:3
    hostname.bge3
    hosts
$How can the above be done for a zone?

    Hi
This requires 2 steps. Firstly update your zone configuration to add the logical interface and its associated IP address.
Assuming from below you want the logical interface to be added to bge0 then do the following replacing the zonename and ip address for whatever is appropriate for you.
    # zonecfg -z itchyzone
    zonecfg:itchyzone1> add net
    zonecfg:itchyzone1:net> set address=192.168.1.21
    zonecfg:itchyzone1:net> set physical=bge0
    zonecfg:itchyzone1:net> end
zonecfg:itchyzone1> exitYou can do the above as many times as you like to create multiple logical interfaces for the zone.
After doing the above you will need to reboot the zone to get the new logical interface.
However if you cant reboot the zone you can plumb a logical interface into the zone by running something similar to the following (change for your zonename, IP etc) from the global zone:
    # ifconfig bge0 addif 192.168.1.21 netmask + broadcast + zone itchyzone1 upyou will now have an extra interface in the zone (in this case called itchyzone1). To verify, login to the zone and run ifconfig -a and you will see your new interface.
    # zlogin itchyzone1

    Hi RJ12,
    Thank you for the info!
If this problem is holding you up you should give our Applications Engineering department a call at 866-275-6964 to discuss it. The 9076 can have some compilation compatibility issues with our motion modules so it's certainly possible you could be seeing such an error.
Feel free to get in touch with us if we can help out in any way, or consider starting a new thread with more details on the compilation error if you'd like to see if a corrective action report (CAR) already exists.

  • Should I install SSD with clone copy or fresh OS X?

This may be rather complicated, but here it goes:
A few years ago I installed Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro (early 2011) which had Snow Leopard previously.  The result was my quick and nimble Snow Leopard turned into a dog slow, crash and freeze up prone Mountain Lion.  I took my machine to the Apple store 3 times, no hardware problems were identified and no remedies given.
I limped along until Mavericks came along.  Mavericks gave me no improvement.
In my last visit to an Apple store, they suggested a clean install of OS X.  I have now purchased an SSD drive.  If I install the SSD with a clone copy of my SATA drive, I may have faster performance but still have the inherent problem due to the file structure/OS X installation on my SATA, which I think only gets fixed with a clean OS X install.  That would mean manually re-installing all applications and copying all files back.  I am concerned with the risk involved in doing so; if I mistakenly omit a file it could be a disaster.
So here are my options as I understand them:
    - Install the SSD with a clone copy of the SATA drive, which may gives some better performance but still suffer from the inherent file and software installation problems of my SATA drive
    - Install the SSD with a clean install of Mavericks and carefully/tediously re-install all applications and manually copy files
    Any recommendations out there?

Thank you for the response.  I think I found a much easier way to do this:
    1. Connect the SDD via USB.  It will prompt you to Initialize, which calls up Use Disk Utility to erase and name the new SDD drive
    2. Download Mavericks installer from the Apple Store, which is somewhat non-intuitive but you have to select Continue to get it to download
    3. When it is done downloading it automatically asks to install Mavericks, say yes and proceed to where you can select the option to show all drives.  Select your new SDD drive.  It will reboot and then proceed with installing Mavericks on the new SDD, takes about 24 minutes
    4. After installing Mavericks it reboots and then asks to transfer files from a Mac.  Say yes and proceed to copy everything from the SATA in the machine to the SDD connected by USB.  I did encounter a transient error along the way which does appear to be significant.  Also, it may prompt to setup a new Mac account, which I did erroneously.  However, the previous account is preserved.
    5. When all this is done I replaced the internal SATA with the SDD and booted up.  Everything works great (so far).  All files, settings are preserved, it is much faster.
I think this is a much easier, faster, less intimidating, and fool proof way to replace a SATA with an SSD while installing a fresh OS X
By the way, the recommended procedure I have seen for enabling TRIM are the following commands:
    sudo cp /System/Library/Extensions/IOAHCIFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOAHCIBlockStorag e.kext/Contents/MacOS/IOAHCIBlockStorage /System/Library/Extensions/IOAHCIFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOAHCIBlockStorag e.kext/Contents/MacOS/IOAHCIBlockStorage.original
    sudo perl -pi -e 's|(\x52\x6F\x74\x61\x74\x69\x6F\x6E\x61\x6C\x00{1,20})[^\x00]{9}(\x00{1,20}\x5 4)|$1\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00$2|sg' /System/Library/Extensions/IOAHCIFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOAHCIBlockStorag e.kext/Contents/MacOS/IOAHCIBlockStorage
    sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions/

Yes, you can install a SATA drive in but you must do the following settings:
    ATA On Chip Config: Native
    ATA Mode: SATA Only
    PATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    PATA Channel Selection: No
    Set SATA as RAID: No
    The rest at defaults.
Next, you can't copy and paste windows from drive to drive as there'll be alot of i386 and winnt/system32 files being locked, thus unable to be copied over.
not looking to copy &paste but will use software that comes with sata drive or some other program to copy win xp to sata drive. will that work?

  • Need help install SATA-NCQ HD on 865PENEO2

Ive got a MSI 865PENEO2 MOBO and as far as i can see, ive got 2 IDEports and 2 SATA ports.
My IDE HD busted a week ago so i got myself a new SATA DRIVE. Now i dont know what to do. Ive got a WINDOWS XP install cd with intergrated SP2. And ive pluged SATA cable+power cable in. I want to install XP on my new SATA drive. I have never delt with SATA so i dont know what i am doing.
Do i need to install drivers? WIll i get that error of windows limiting how much HD space i can see? (my HD is a Seagate 300GIG SATA NCQ).
Do i need to BIOS FLASH so it can reconsie my 300GIG SATA HD?
Also after installing the SATA drive, my friend comes ouver sometimes with his IDE drive, can i just plug the IDE drive into ide port and will it show up as slave drive after the sata?
    thankyou people.

Without RAID you probably won't need the F6 driver install, just make sure in your HDD priority that the SATA drive is the first HDD.
